Surprise: California’s Cap And Trade Program Becomes A Slush Fund

Who could have possibly seen this coming? (via Watts Up With That?)

California lawmakers are turning cap-and-trade into the slush fund critics long feared

For years, critics of California’s cap-and-trade program have lambasted it as a government slush fund. They say that politicians are able to dip into it to fund their pet projects or raid it to fill the shortfall of the moment — as long as they can assert a mildly credible connection between the spending and the state’s ambitious goals to fight climate change.

Well, California lawmakers are about to prove those critics right.

As part of the budget negotiations, lawmakers shelved Gov. Gavin Newsom’s controversial “water tax” that would have raised $140 million a year to help low-income communities finally clean up their contaminated water systems.

Instead, lawmakers plan to fund the much-needed water cleanups with $100 million a year in cap-and-trade dollars — money that is paid to the state by polluters and which is legally required to be spent on projects to reduce the greenhouse gases responsible for global warming.

So how do leaders justify using cap-and-trade dollars for water cleanups? Newsom’s office said that communities with tainted water need bottled water delivered in trucks that pollute the air. If the water supply is cleaned, that will reduce vehicle emissions.

They could do so much more if the California government and all those who work for it gave up their fossil fueled vehicles. Heck, they could have a referendum that would force all government employees to give up their personal fossil fueled vehicles.

By that ludicrous logic, California could pay for expanded Medi-Cal benefits with cap-and-trade dollars too, because if people have preventive healthcare, they’ll get sick less and drive to the hospital less and produce fewer greenhouse gases.

Don’t give them ideas.

But cap-and-trade dollars are for projects that really reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as replacing dirty diesel engines or capturing methane pollution from dairies. Lawmakers undermine public trust in — and public support for — the state’s climate program when they divert that money to other needs.

They should require that all airports in California close. And those horrible hotels and vacations spots, because people come in fossil fueled vehicles, right?

Anyhow, no one should be surprised that Warmists would play games with the money.

Excitable Eric Swalwell Releases A Gun Grabbing Plan

Eric Swalwell might be the main Democrat running for president who’s primary focus is on firearms, but, what he believes is pretty much what the rest believe

How Rep. Eric Swalwell would tackle gun violence in America

Democratic presidential hopeful Eric Swalwell on Monday stood outside the National Rifle Association headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia, to unveil a gun-control plan that includes banning assault weapons, instituting a gun buyback program and requiring licenses for all gun owners.

The California congressman promised to “restore hope in America’s cities, so people don’t resort to the lowest form of communication: violence.”

The California Democrat, who named gun violence a “top-tier” issue and a “health care crisis,” called for banning “every single” assault weapon and buying back such weapons from those who already have them. Swalwell, a former prosecutor, last year proposed a ban on “possession of military-style semiautomatic assault weapons.”

Swalwell said he would hold weapon manufacturers responsible by “lifting the shield of liability that protects” them, and he said gun licensing procedures should include buying insurance. He said everyone who buys a firearm should go through a background check, but he did not detail what that process should entail.

He also said he would work on legislation to keep people with mental health issues from getting guns and vowed to create a national firearms database.

Virtually nothing in his plan touches on criminality, except for making law abiding gun owners criminals. Look at his “gun buyback”

  • Ban civilian possession of military-style semiautomatic assault weapons with an exception shooting ranges and hunting clubs.
  • Buy back military-style semiautomatic assault weapons from anyone who chooses to follow the law.
  • Criminally prosecute any person caught defying the law.

Eric also wants to legalize everyone who is in the U.S. illegally. He also wants to invest in our neighborhoods, noting that “We have neglected communities of color, and we have failed to invest in young Black men across the country.” Which is interesting, since most of these areas are in cities run for a long time by Democrats.

He’s also looking to “Create a federal licensing program for gun owners, requiring them to satisfactorily complete a training program with both written and practical exams, the same way most states do with cars and hunters.” Obviously, cars are not in the Constitution. Further, we know that the exams, training, and licensing would be so burdensome that few would be able to qualify, much like the programs D.C. was running that were killed off by Heller v D.C.

He would also “Limit ammunition sales for individual purchasers to 200 rounds per 30-day period.” I don’t know about you, but I blow off more than that every time I go to the range.

And lots more insanity, but, very little about going after those who use firearms criminally. Wouldn’t want to offend those who vote Democrat.

Oh, BTW, for all the hoopla about gun grabbing by Dems

New York Poised To Pass Their Own Economy Killing Green New Deal

It’s landmark, people, landmark! It’ll never achieve the main goal of reducing “carbon pollution”, just like the Kyoto Protocol failed and most are failing to abide by their commitments to the Paris Climate Agreement, but, really, the reduction of CO2 isn’t really the true point: the growth of Government and control of citizens is

New York State Reaches Landmark Deal On Green New Deal-Style Climate Bill

New York lawmakers reached a deal late Sunday night to pass one of the most ambitious climate bills in the nation, setting the Empire State on a course to shape what the Green New Deal could look like at a state level.

The agreement to pass the so-called Climate & Communities Protection Act calls for New York to eliminate 85% of its overall planet-warming emissions by 2050, while offsetting or capturing the other 15%. The deal mandates 35% of state energy funding go to low-income, polluted communities, but sets a goal of investing 40%. The final legislation requires all state-financed energy projects to pay union wages.

“I believe we have an agreement on the climate change bill,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), who initially opposed the bill, said on WAMC radio on Monday morning.

The breakthrough came just minutes before midnight on Sunday, stopping the bill from becoming ensnared in the procedural web of end-of-session negotiations, where activists said the legislation, widely touted as the country’s sharpest state-level climate proposal, risked being dulled.

Now lawmakers are expected to pass the bill, known by its acronym CCPA, in a vote Wednesday, when the three-day aging period between when legislators in Albany complete a deal and hold a formal vote ends. Once passed, the legislation would make New York the sixth state to adopt a 100% clean electricity target after Hawaii, California, New Mexico, Nevada and Washington. Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., set similar targets.

None of those other states will be able to achieve this, either. Well, for the energy parts, anyhow

But the CCPA, like the crisis it aims to address, uniquely touches on every aspect of the New York economy. In that sense, the bill’s scope is more ambitious than the 100% clean energy bill California passed last year. The Golden State’s legislation set a 100% zero-emissions electricity goal by 2045, and an executive order from the governor broadened the vision to include climate pollution from transportation, the biggest source by sector.

The CCPA goes further, requiring New York to generate 70% of its electricity from renewables by 2030, and completely eliminate utility emissions by 2040.

The CCPA, comrades, “uniquely touches on every aspect of the NY economy.” Which means every aspect of the lives of citizens. Which means their cost of energy, food, transportation, housing, etc and so on, will be touched on and go up up up. And their lives will be more and more controlled. Expect the exodus for New York to continue.

Trump Tweets That Mass Deportation Of Illegal Aliens To Begin Next Week

This has give the Washington Post and Democrats a big case of the sads

Trump vows mass migrant arrests starting next week

President Trump said in a tweet Monday night that U.S. immigration agents are planning to make mass arrests starting “next week,” an apparent reference to a plan in preparation for months that aims to round up thousands of migrant parents and children in a blitz operation across major U.S. cities.

“Next week ICE will begin the process of removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States,” Trump wrote, referring to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “They will be removed as fast as they come in.”(snip)

“Our next challenge is going to be interior enforcement,” Morgan told reporters June 4 in Washington. “We will be going after individuals who have gone through due process and who have received final orders of deportation.

“That will include families,” he said, adding that ICE agents will treat the parents and children they arrest “with compassion and humanity.”

This could potentially involved one million illegals, as the Fox News/Associated Press article shows

An administration official told the AP that the new effort would focus on the more than 1 million people who have been issued final deportation orders by federal judges but remain at large in the country. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to explain the president’s tweets.

It’s time to send them packing. As the saying goes “you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.” We have laws. Back to the original Washington Post

According to Homeland Security officials, nearly all unauthorized migrants who came to the United States in 2017 in family groups remain present in the country. Some of those families are awaiting adjudication of asylum claims, but administration officials say a growing number are skipping out on court hearings while hoping to live and work in the United States as long as possible.

They aren’t showing up for court hearings? Huh. Try not showing up for your court hearing on a minor issue, and the judge will issue a bench warrant, and you’ll be in big trouble.

We’re Saved: Artists, Activists Call For Action On Hotcoldwetdry

I wonder how many people took fossil fueled trips to attend the concert? I wonder how many of the artists travel around the nation using fossil fuels? The top picture in the article shows one performing in New Orleans

Artists, Activists Call for Action on Climate Change & Social Concerns at Pete Seeger’s Clearwater Festival

Two mighty musical women from two different generations of activism – Ani DiFranco and Mavis Staples — headlined the opening day of the Great Hudson River Revival Saturday (June 15) to benefit Pete Seeger’s environmental sloop Clearwater, which the late folk icon launched 50 years ago to save the river.

But at the event, aka the Clearwater Festival, a young woman from a third generation — 14-year-old climate activist Alexandria Villaseñor — briefly commanded the stage to urge the audience to join a worldwide global strike in September to save the planet.

“In December 2018, I began my weekly school strike in front of the United Nations headquarters demanding action [on climate change] from world leaders,” Villaseñor said told the crowd at Croton Point Park, on the shores of the Hudson, some 30 miles north of New York, as she credited the influence of Sweden’s Greta Thunberg, now 16, the leader of a global movement of student climate activists.

After months of demonstrations by students, Villaseñor told the crowd the movement’s young leaders last month called for “a general climate strike, adults and youth, on Sept. 20, which is the Friday before world leaders arrive in New York for the United Nations climate summit.”

Hmm, how’d Alexandria get from New York City to Croton on the Hudson, which is about 45 miles?

And, if you’re thinking “Isn’t Pete Seeger a communist?”, well, yes, yes he was. He should be appreciated for his commitment to making the Hudson clean, but, still, he was a communist while still alive.

Excitable Eric Swalwell To Pitch Gun Confiscation Near NRA Headquarters

Mr. Buy Back Your Guns That The Government Never Sold you as well as being protected himself by armed security has a Plan

Swalwell to pitch gun control plan near NRA headquarters

White House hopeful Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) says he will take the fight for gun control to the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) home turf.

The California Democrat announced Friday he will unveil a “comprehensive national framework for ending gun violence” at a news conference Monday near the NRA’s national headquarters in Fairfax, Va.

“We’re done letting the bullying, tweeting minority that leads the NRA dictate whether Americans live or die,” he said. “I’m taking the battle to the NRA’s doorstep with a new, broader package of commonsense reforms to end gun violence. We’re done relying on thoughts and prayers – it’s time to act.”

He’s done letting people exercise their Constitutional rights of Freedom of Speech, petitioning for redress of grievance, and ownership of firearms, among others.

Swalwell, who has made gun control the centerpiece of his long-shot Democratic presidential bid, has come out in support of measures like an assault weapons ban and a mandatory national buyback.

He’s made gun grabbing from law abiding citizens the centerpiece of his whole campaign, and he’s lucky if he gets 1% in the Dem presidential polls.

Apparently, he’s going to make using a firearm in the commission of a crime illegal, finally? Nah. But, he will be telling us at 130pm today.

Your Fault: New Zealand Town See Massive Plague Of Rats

Supposedly, they are big as cats, and CNN is on the case

Rat infestation plagues New Zealand town

A beachside New Zealand suburb known for roaming chickens and yoga has become infested with hordes of unwelcome guests: large, writhing rats.

The rodents — which have swarmed around shops and houses in the artsy west Auckland suburb of Titirangi — have made headlines in New Zealand recently, where local media have described them as “cat-sized” and “brazen.”

Local reporter Don Rowe said he saw 30 to 40 rats within a 20-minute period when he went out to the area last week.

“They were sort of writhing around in the brush and feasting on little bits of grain,” he told CNN. “They’ve never been as brazen or in as high a number. They were crawling over the roots and in and out of trees, just a tide of them … They were not afraid of people at all, not afraid of vehicles.”

Earlier this month, Titirangi Residents and Ratepayers Association posted on their Facebook, saying the rats were “running all over the village in broad daylight.”

Suburban Titirangi has long been home to a large population of wild chickens, and residents believe that the rats may have been fattening up on chicken feed left for the stray birds, said Greg Presland, the chairperson of the Waitakere Ranges Local Board which administers Titirangi.

Oh, so, there is a rational explanation for this. A lot of extra food sitting around, rats eat it, grow, having litters. Just like in many big cities around the world when trash is left out.

Titirangi is just the tip of the iceberg of a much bigger problem in New Zealand, said Kevin Hackwell, the chief conservation adviser at conservation organization Forest and Bird.

He said the rat influx was due to a so-called mega-mast, the country’s biggest in 40 years. In New Zealand, native plants don’t always seed every year. Every few years, all species of one tree will seed at once — something called a “mega-mast.”

Historically, New Zealand was a land of birds — the only native mammals are bats — and a mega-mast would have been good for native bird populations. But now, it’s rodents that feed off the additional seeds and fruits, meaning their populations soar into the millions. That in turn affects the native bird populations, as the huge rat populations feed on bird eggs, Hackwell said.

So, another good reason to add into the mix, right? Nope, sorry, Mate, that makes no sense in Warmist World

The reason for the huge mega-mast was simple: global warming, Hackwell said. As temperatures have got warmer, the frequency of major masting events has increased, he said.

“Climate change is already having a huge impact on our biodiversity,” he said. “In a mega-mast year, all hell breaks loose for our native wildlife.”

Republicans Need To Change Their Product In People’s Republik Of California Or Something

See, the problem isn’t that Modern Socialists, people Dependent on Government, SJWs, and virtue signalers dominate the more urban areas of California, many of them having been taught this stuff in the Democratic Party run schools, leading to control of California by Democrats. No, see, it’s that Republicans aren’t taking Democrat positions, per George Skelton at the LA Times

Republicans need to change their product. Californians aren’t buying it

Politics is like private enterprise. You either sell your product or perish.

California voters have not been buying Republican merchandise. So Democrats have monopolized the market.

It’s not the fault of consumers for not liking what the GOP has been peddling. Nor should the Democratic retailers be blamed.

The Republican Party is culpable for not adjusting to the changing California marketplace.(snip)

I called former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a centrist Republican who famously warned a GOP state convention in 2007 that “in movie terms, we are dying at the box office. We are not filling the seats.”

See, it’s the Republicans fault that they aren’t offering what California’s want

“What you need to do is to be competitive,” he said. “It’s like a business, right? The ones that offer the best service are the ones who get the most business. Same with the party. The party that has the most answers to problems, they’re getting the action, the votes.”

Schwarzenegger said voters particularly wanted answers to problems of healthcare, education and climate change, and Republicans aren’t providing them.

“They’re extremely important to women,” he added. (snip)

Last week I asked (Assemblyman Chad) Mayes what the GOP needed to do. He says it needs to do more than just oppose taxes.

“I don’t know anyone who doesn’t believe Republicans aren’t the anti-tax party,” he said. “Obviously that isn’t enough. It doesn’t have the same impact it did in 1978” — when voters passed the property tax-lowering Proposition 13 — “or the mid-’90s.”

Mayes said Republicans should advocate more efficient education spending and embrace immigrants.

Immigrants “get the message,” he added, “that Republicans want to deport their parents and grandparents. It’s a repellent.”

This is what Skelton and Republican squishes are calling the “practical center”: amnesty for illegal aliens, raising taxes, ‘climate change’ legislation and all that comes with it, government paying for all healthcare, and abortion on demand.

California Republicans need to change their product.

If they change it to basically be Democrat, or Democrat lite, then they are no longer Republicans.
