The Happy Purple Gridiron

Gotta love it (finally!)

GREENVILLE — From soul-crushing to spirit-charging in just eight plays, the Pirates aren’t winless anymore.

ECU rocked its homecoming crowd and rolled down the field against Tulane in the final minutes of Saturday’s matchup for a 27-25 victory, shinning some light on what has been a dark and dismal season so far for the Pirates.

The win stopped a nine-game Pirates’ losing streak that had lasted 357 days since a win over Army last year.

Didn’t really need the reminder of when the last win was, did we?

Thompson watched as quarterback James Pinkney led the Pirates on an eight-play, 50-yard drive highlighted by Kevin Roach’s 20-yard catch and run. The big play helped set up kicker Cam Broadwell’s 30-yard game-winning field goal with just 12 seconds left.

The score sent the Pirates into a championship-like frenzy.

Yeah, baby! Rumor has it that Steve “no blocking” Spurrier attended the game. More likely that it was because head coach John Thompson was D coordinator at Florida, rather then Spurrier becoming head coach of the Pirates.
