The GOP Takes Control Of The House Today. Obviously, That Has Unhinged The NY Times

There are all sorts of fun stories running around the liberal media today, ones such as this one, which is already proclaiming the GOP is having problems with cohesion. And this one from Time, which wonders if the opening ceremony, which includes “showcasing their fealty to the Constitution,” is making a mockery of ….. something. They don’t really say what. And Dana Milbank having a snit fit, and saying the GOP leadership is acting just like Democrats. And plenty of others, who are despondent over the GOP takeover.

The queen of them all, though, is the NY Times editorial board:

A theatrical production of unusual pomposity will open on Wednesday when Republicans assume control of the House for the 112th Congress. A rule will be passed requiring that every bill cite its basis in the Constitution. A bill will be introduced to repeal the health care law. On Thursday, the Constitution will be read aloud in the House chamber. And in one particularly self-important flourish, the new speaker, John Boehner, arranged to have his office staff “sworn in” on Tuesday by the chief justice of the United States.

Well, we know it isn’t quite up to par with Obama’s Roman columns and his inauguration, which included a train trip from Philly to D.C., kinda like Abraham Lincoln did, along with tons of concerts, parties, the opening of the entire length of The Mall (a first), all the celebrities, and, oh, yeah, the historic cost of $170 million.

Those who had hoped to see a glimpse of the much-advertised Republican plan to revive the economy and put Americans back to work will have to wait at least until party leaders finish their Beltway insider ritual of self-glorification. Then, they may find time for governing.

Democrats have had control of the House for four years, and have managed to make the economy worse. Yet, Republicans can now not take 3 days to get things up and running? Anyone else visualize spittle on the screens of NY Times editors?

The empty gestures are officially intended to set a new tone in Washington, to demonstrate — presumably to the Republicans’ Tea Party supporters — that things are about to be done very differently. But it is far from clear what message is being sent by, for instance, reading aloud the nation’s foundational document. Is this group of Republicans really trying to suggest that they care more deeply about the Constitution than anyone else and will follow it more closely?

Notice that in the minds of Liberals, this has to be about one-upmanship, rather than about obeying the primary charter that holds our Republic together.

In any case, it is a presumptuous and self-righteous act, suggesting that they alone understand the true meaning of a text that the founders wisely left open to generations of reinterpretation. Certainly the Republican leadership is not trying to suggest that African-Americans still be counted as three-fifths of a person.

Snap! They managed to work in some racism. But, yeah, we do suggest that we alone understand the true meaning. Witness the word “reinterpretation.” The Constition cannot be reinterpreted: it can be amended. (I’ve helpfully included a link on how that works, just so the liberals understand.)

There are many more paragraphs which make me think that Prozac may want to put in a vending machine at the NY Times building, ending with

The Republicans’ antics are a ghastly waste of time at a moment when the nation is expecting real leadership from Congress, and suggest that the new House leadership is still unable to make tough choices. Voters, no less than drama critics, prefer substance to overblown theatrics.

I don’t remember the Fish Wrap discussing the 8 months of debate on Obamacare in this manner, nor all the time Democrats in Congress, along with Barack Obama, wasted not dealing with the economy. Do you?

Let’s check out that 2007 coverage of Speaker Pelosi …

WASHINGTON, Jan. 1 — During her first 100 hours as House speaker, Nancy Pelosi has vowed, she will sweep an aggressive legislative agenda through the newly Democratic-controlled House.
    But first comes Pelosi-palooza.
In a three-day stretch of whirlwind events beginning on Wednesday, Mrs. Pelosi will celebrate her heritage (at the Italian Embassy), her faith (in a Roman Catholic Mass), her education (at Trinity College), her childhood (in Baltimore) and her current home (in a tribute by the singer Tony Bennett, of “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” fame).
She will embrace her status as the first female House speaker with a tea for women. She will highlight her pull among Democrats with a $1,000-per-person fund-raising concert. And she will welcome visitors to the halls of Congress in an open-house tour.

Funny how the Times reviled in “Pelosi-palooza”

I am surprised that even the Social Democrats are stupid enough to belittle expressions of fidelity to our founding documents. The level of fondness and reverence for the constitution varies among the American People but few would consider it pointless sentimentality. I submit they attack our affection for our Constitution at their peril.

  4. John Ryan says:

liberals not only UNDERSTAND how the Constitution is amended, they are the ones who HAVE amended it. Conservatives haven’t been the ones pushing to have it amended LIBERALS HAVE> Well except for the Prohibition on alcohol, that one was pushed through by conservatives.

  5. gitarcarver says:

Ryan, let’s start at the 13th Amendment – you know – the one proposed and pushed for by Republicans.

Get back to me when you get over that one.
