How Social Networks Drive Black Unemployment

It’s easy to believe the worst is over in the economic downturn (why, is Obama going to resign?). But for African-Americans, the pain continues — over 13 percent of black workers are unemployed, nearly twice the national average. And that’s not a new development: regardless of the economy, job prospects for African-Americans have long been significantly worse than for the country as a whole.

The most obvious explanation for this entrenched disparity is racial discrimination. But in my research I have found a somewhat different culprit: favoritism. Getting an inside edge by using help from family and friends is a powerful, hidden force driving inequality in the United States.

Such favoritism has a strong racial component. Through such seemingly innocuous networking, white Americans tend to help other whites, because social resources are concentrated among whites. If African-Americans are not part of the same networks, they will have a harder time finding decent jobs.

So, because Uncle Joe knows a guy working for a tech company, which offers you a position, that’s raaaaacist.

There’s no question that discrimination is still a problem in the American economy. But whites helping other whites is not the same as discrimination, and it is not illegal. Yet it may have a powerful effect on the access that African-Americans and other minorities have to good jobs, or even to the job market itself.

So, it’s not discrimination, and it’s not illegal. Interesting. The entire article was premised on obtaining a job based on who you know and them being the same race (primarily white) was deemed discrimination and racism.

Surprise! Quebec Wasted $1.5B On Hotcoldwetdry Programs

A story you’ve heard multiple times: Government says there’s a problem. They allocate a ton of money to Do Something. At the end, Government fails. Even if they managed to Do Something, the money was spent in a wasteful manner, getting the least bang for the buck possible. Sure, there are a few successes, usually when the Doing Something is farmed out to the private sector, but, when it comes to “climate change”, most projects are pure fail

(Montreal Gazette) Last month, Jean Charest painted a rosy picture of Quebec’s climate change efforts during his time as premier, but a new government report suggests the province is only a fraction of the way toward its goals, despite a $1.5-billion plan.

In 2006, Quebec had projected it would cut 14.5 megatonnes of greenhouse-gas emissions by the end of 2012, but in fact cut less than two megatonnes by March 2012, according to a progress report published with little fanfare last month on the Environment Department’s website.

That’s only 13 per cent of the goal Quebec set for itself back in June 2006, when Charest unveiled the province’s 2006-2012 climate change action plan.

To reach the target, Quebec said it would set up programs to improve energy efficiency, invest in public transit, require landfill sites to capture methane from decomposing organic material, have speed-limiting devices installed on trucks set to 105 kilometres per hour and help municipalities evaluate their greenhouse-gas emissions

Yeah, I know that you’re really surprised. Make sure to read the entire article for the mostly failure, along with the scorecard. Interestingly, the government hasn’t even spent the allocated money like it was supposed to.

Whistleblower Claims Clinton Attempted To Cut Counterterrorism Bureau Out Of Benghazi Loop

The House hearings are going to be very, very interesting…well, not in most news outlets, which have decided that the deaths of 4 Americans, including an Ambassador, in an attack on September 11th, is no big deal, nothing to see here, not even worthy of front page coverage, at least not under a Democrat Administration

(Fox News) On the night of Sept. 11, as the Obama administration scrambled to respond to the Benghazi terror attacks, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and a key aide effectively tried to cut the department’s own counterterrorism bureau out of the chain of reporting and decision-making, according to a “whistle-blower” witness from that bureau who will soon testify to the charge before Congress, Fox News has learned.

That witness is Mark I. Thompson, a former Marine and now the deputy coordinator for operations in the agency’s counterterrorism bureau. Sources tell Fox News Thompson will level the allegation against Clinton during testimony on Wednesday before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, chaired by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif.

Fox News has also learned that another official from the counterterrorism bureau — independently of Thompson — voiced the same complaint about Clinton and Under Secretary for Management Patrick Kennedy to trusted national security colleagues back in October.

This seems to go more towards the cover-up, claiming that the attacks were a spontaneous film review gone awry

The counterterrorism officials, however, concluded that Clinton and Kennedy were immediately wary of the attacks being portrayed as acts of terrorism, and accordingly worked to prevent the counterterrorism bureau from having a role in the department’s early decision-making relating to them.

There are three parts to the Benghazi fiasco: before, during, and after. While I still maintain that finding out what figures in the administration did during the attack, and why no help was sent (some claim that no units were positioned to respond quickly. Well, they could have sent them just in case, yet didn’t), it’s looking more and more like what happened afterwards was an intentional coverup, an intentional attempt to mislead both the American people and Congress, for what reason we do no know, rather than an simply being an incompetent administration.

Furthermore, some folks could find themselves on the wrong end of a Contempt of Congress charge for lying to Congress. Under Title 18, Part i, Chapter 47, § 1001

(a) Except as otherwise provided in this section, whoever, in any matter within the jurisdiction of the executive, legislative, or judicial branch of the Government of the United States, knowingly and willfully-

(1) falsifies, conceals, or covers up by any trick, scheme, or device a material fact;

(2) makes any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or representation; or

(3) makes or uses any false writing or document knowing the same to contain any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or entry;

shall be fined under this title, imprisoned not more than 5 years or, if the offense involves international or domestic terrorism (as defined in section 2331), imprisoned not more than 8 years, or both.

Hillary and Susan Rice would look fabulous in orange jumpsuits.

Tell Me If You’ve Heard This One Before: Obama To Focus On Jobs

Obama’s like the kid who constantly breaks windows playing ball too close to the house, does a crummy job mowing the grass, won’t clean his room, whines about wanting cookies before dinner, and then demands a raise in his allowance every few months. Heck, the USA Today writer can’t even find it in himself to write a full size article, just a few paragraphs, having seen this again and again

Obama to launch new jobs tours

President Obama is turning back to the jobs issue, launching a series of “Middle Class Jobs and Opportunity Tours” starting Thursday with an appearance in Texas.

Obama will visit growing areas “to learn what has helped them become successful and use these models of growth to encourage Congress to act,” said White House spokesman Josh Earnest.

On Thursday, the president opens the tour in Austin, Texas, where he will visit a high school, and speak with leaders of the city’s high-tech industries.

Well, at least he’s going somewhere that’s been successful, but, why go to a high school? That’s not really where the jobs have been created. As for the high-tech industries, I wonder how many of them moved from California? Perhaps Obama could learn something. Like, if one wants to accomplish something, one has to stick too it, continue working hard, and implement wise, real world policies that create success in business. Not talk about it then forget about it for a few months, talk and forget, lather, rinse, repeat. Obama’s last pivot was briefly during the 2013 State of the Union.

He’d be much better served talking to Gov. Rick Perry, and learn about the governmental policies that help stimulate economic growth. Obama would learn that these are the policies that the Republican held House has passed, so instead of excoriating Congressional Republicans, Obama should slap around Harry Reid and his Democrat controlled Senate to at least vote on those House bills.

Unsurprisingly, there are no other stops announced. It’s rather early in the week to be cynical, but, anyone who believes that Obama will attend at least one fund-raiser in Austin on Thursday night raise your hand. Or, perhaps this is just a brief stop before he heads to his ATM in California, meaning he can get the government to pick up most of the tab for the trip.

Whatcha Reading?

It was kind of a tough week. I tried a multitude of books before finally settling on one and finishing it. EndRun started out so so, I might go back to it. Doubtful. Does seem to have a possible interesting Mars aspect, but if I restart, something better happen quickly.

Monsters looked interesting, started in on the sample, but too much explanation of how the world went to pot with no real interpersonal connection.

Also got pretty far into Simmer by Fiona MacCord (which is no longer available on Amazon, no idea why). Go start being about the 4 Horseman of the Apocalypse, but bogged down into tedium, going nowhere.

Did finish Sedition. A Political Thriller. It was free, now 99 cents. I’d give it 3 1/2 stars, an interesting premise. POTUS keels over, but there is no VP. There was a nominee, but he hadn’t been confirmed yet. What happens? Especially when there is a group looking to affect “regime change” through violence? I mostly stay away from these types of thrillers/mystery that are highly political, unless they are really, really good or try and avoid serious partisan blame. Sedition avoided that type of blame. Political identity was avoided to a degree. The “domestic terrorists” blended TEA Party extremists/libertarianism with anti-war/BDS/Occupy.

BTW, if you do want a heavy political story with time travel wrapped in, check out In Due Time by J.K. Jones. Conservatives will love it. Liberals hate it. It is about the consequences of a New World Order as run by Progressives. It won’t seem hokey or outlandish. It is plausible and realistic, incorporating the kind of thinking and action that we see from the hard left. I read this one way before starting this Sunday meme on books. 5 starts.

Reading Endless Vacation at the moment. It’s OK. Nothing great, but enough to hold my attention 24% though (at the time of writing Saturday evening. I’ll probably be around 50% by time of posting)….and, edit before posting, kinda bogged down. One of the good things about Kindle is the ability to say “time to move to something else.” One of the bad things about Kindle is that one might abandon a book. In the past I might have just gone back to a well read book, such as a Heinlein or something. Now, I’ve moved on to Silas: A Supernatural Thriller, which so far has been very good. Only at 13%, though.

The Earth Will Be Incinerated Because You Ate A Cheeseburger

The climateweenies at Slate wonder if we would give up burgers to stop “climate change”. Hey, considering how cold this spring is….can we call it spring? In all my years in NC I have never had to turn the heat on in May…perhaps we need to eat more burgers. Though it has been kinda chilly to have a cook out (via Tom Nelson)

In case you missed the news, humanity spent the Earth Day week reaching another sad milestone in the history of catastrophic climate change: For the first time, measurements of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere surpassed 400 parts per million, aka way above what our current ecosystem can handle.

That’s weird: I can’t find any scientific stories saying it crossed that line. Lots which say we’re close to doing that, none that say we have.

Actually, you probably did miss the news because most major media outlets didn’t cover it in a serious way, if at all. Instead, they and their audiences evidently view such information as far less news-, buzz- and tweet-worthy than (among other things) the opening of George W. Bush’s library and President Obama’s jokes at the White House Correspondents Dinner.

Oh, there you go,is it’s a conspiracy. Got ya. Except, the Slate article is from the 2nd. The French Tribune published a story on the 5th stating that the world is on the verge of crossing 400 ppm.

Here’s the good news, though: The fastest way to reduce climate change shouldn’t seem impossible, because it requires no massive new investments, technological breakthroughs or long-term infrastructure projects. According to data compiled by former World Bank advisers Robert Goodland and Jeff Anhang, it just requires us all to eat fewer animal products.

You first, chump.

If you find it demoralizing that we are incinerating the planet and dooming future generations simply because too many of us like to eat cheeseburgers, here’s that good news I promised: In their report, Goodland and Anhang found that most of what we need to do to mitigate the climate crisis can be achieved “by replacing just one quarter of today’s least eco-friendly food products” — read: animal products — “with better alternatives.” That’s right; essentially, if every fourth time someone craved, say, beef, chicken or cow milk they instead opted for a veggie burger, a bean burrito or water, we have a chance to halt the emergency.

This comes from political wacko David Sirota, most recently beaten up over his stupid Boston bombing comments. So, if you eat cheeseburgers, your causing the planet to burn to a crisp, something that never happened despite atmospheric CO2 having much higher concentrations during most of the history of the Earth.

Maybe if you would stop eating burgers it wouldn’t snow in Arkansas in May for the first time in recorded history (which goes back to 1819)

Fight Brewing Between Eric Holder And Kansas Over Gun Nullification Law

The irony is delicious: top cop Eric Holder, who ignored US and Mexican law when agencies under his control walked high powered weapons of war (to use the Left’s terminology) across the border into Mexico, without bothering to inform the government of Mexico as to Operation Fast and Furious, but is now upset that Kansas has passed a gun law

(Examiner) The office of Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback received a letter from U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday, informing Brownback that his state’s recent passage of Senate Bill (S.B.) 102, which nullifies any new federal gun control laws within the state of Kansas, will not be considered legitimate by the federal government.

S.B. 102 is “unconstitutional” because in “purporting to override federal law and to criminalize the official acts of federal officers…(the bill) directly conflicts with federal law,” Holder wrote.

“Federal officers who are responsible for enforcing federal laws and regulations in order to maintain public safety cannot be forced to choose between the risk of a criminal prosecution by a state and the continued performance of their federal duties,” Holder continued. “Under the Supremacy Clause of the United States Constitution, Kansas may not prevent federal employees from carrying out their official responsibilities. And a state may not criminalize the exercise of federal responsibilities. Because S.B. 102 conflicts with federal firearms laws and regulations, federal law supersedes this new statute; all provisions of federal firearms laws and regulations and their implementing regulations therefore continue to apply.”

Holder concluded by informing Brownback that “federal law enforcement agencies…will continue to execute their duties to enforce all federal laws and regulations,” and he then threatened the state with “litigation, if necessary, to prevent the State of Kansas from interfering with the activities of federal officials enforcing federal law.”

We’re still anxiously awaiting Holder’s threat to sue Colorado for passage of their pot usage law, which violates federal drug laws. Anyhow, Gov. Brownback replied simply, telling Holder to go pound sand, or whatever it is hard core Progressives pound

(KAKE) “The people of Kansas have clearly expressed their sovereign will. It is my hope that upon further review, you will see their right to do so.”

Holder won’t, because this move by Kansas interferes with the gun grabbing ways of Democrats, as well as the massive Federal Government primacy Democrats want. This could set up a nice showdown at the Supreme Court, revolving around multiple Amendments, especially the 10th, along with the “supremacy clause”, both of which could see the power of the Federal government rolled back into accordance with the Constitution. The Feds can’t just write a law and claim all have to follow it if it is not in accordance with the Constitution.

Let’s hope Holder sues.
