Oh Noes: Hotcoldwetdry Can Kill Coffee, Shift Wine Making

I blame you for refusing to unplug all your appliances from the outlets when not in use

(US News) Millions around the world wake up and brew a cup of coffee before they start their day. But for many involved in the industry, a caffeine buzz isn’t keeping them up at night—instead, what’s causing insomnia is the increasing difficulty that climate change causes coffee farmers.

But in recent years, keeping the world’s coffee drinkers supplied has become increasingly difficult: The spread of a deadly fungus that has been linked to global warming and rising global temperatures in the tropical countries where coffee grows has researchers scrambling to create new varieties of coffee plants that can keep pace with these new threats without reducing quality.

Right. Everything is doooooomed!!!!! And the climate should never ever change. It should stay exactly the same with no deviation.

(ChannelNewsAsia) It’s circa 2050 and shoppers are stopping off at Ikea to buy fine wine made in Sweden.

A Nordic fantasy? Not according to climate experts who say the Earth’s warming phase is already driving a wave of change through the world of wine.

As new frontiers for grape growing open up, the viability of some traditional production areas is under threat from scorching temperatures and prolonged droughts.

And in between the two extremes, some long-established styles are being transformed. Some whites once renowned for being light and crisp are getting fatter and more floral while medium-bodied reds are morphing into heavyweight bruisers.

Quite a bit of the piece is about people being optimists as the climate changes (and thinking it’s going to get super duper hotter), but let’s consider that during the last warm period they were growing excellent wine in England. Because the climate changes.

Surprise! ObamaCare To Significantly Increase Health Care Costs

If only there were people who told us this stuff before they passed the Affordable (snicker) Care Act

(Daily Caller) Under the Affordable Care Act, medical claim costs, the largest driver of health insurance premiums, are expected to increase by 32 percent for individuals, a new study by the Society of Actuaries finds.

Though some states might see declines in cost-per-person medical claims, the report found “the overwhelming majority will see double-digit increases in their individual health insurance markets, where people purchase coverage directly from insurers,” The Associated Press reports.

And guess who will be the biggest recipients of the cost increase? Yeah, all those youths who voted for Obama. How ya liking that hopey changey stuff now? And here’s HHS Commissar Kathy Sebelius

(WSJ) Some people purchasing new insurance policies for themselves this fall could see premiums rise because of requirements in the health-care law, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told reporters Tuesday.

Ms. Sebelius’s remarks come weeks before insurers are expected to begin releasing rates for plans that start on Jan. 1, 2014, when key provisions of the health law kick in. Premiums have been a sensitive subject for the Obama administration, which is counting on elements in the health law designed to increase competition among insurers to keep rates in check. The administration has pointed to subsidies that will be available for many lower-income Americans to help them with the cost of coverage.

Fortunately, people only need to fill out a 61+ page document to apply. Even funnier, Debbie Downer blames Republicans for the ever-increasing cost of Obamacare.

Warmists Wonder If Global Warming Is Making European Winters Cold

How can you tell this is a cult? Because no matter what happens, globull warming is to blame

Is global warming causing harsher winters?

Millions of people in northern Europe are still battling snow and ice, wondering why they are being punished with bitter cold when—officially—spring has arrived and Earth is in the grip of global warming.

Yet some scientists, eyeing the fourth year in a row of exceptionally harsh late-winter weather in parts of Europe and North America, suggest warming is precisely the problem. In a complex tango between ocean and atmosphere, warming is causing icy polar air to be displaced southwards, they contend.

This is as stupid as some evangelists blaming Hurricane Katrina and other natural events on God because people are wicked in the areas affected. And just as scientific. Occam’s Razor would say that the most likely explanation would be….it’s getting cold! And that nature does what nature does. Warmists are desperately looking for, and creating, all sorts of fantastical hypotheses in order to continue propping up their dying religion. And boy, do they attempt to create a huge and detailed prognostication where warming because Someone Else drove an SUV is responsible for making it cold and snowy.

But what of Eastern Europe and into the former Soviet republics? They’ve been experiencing the same very cold and snowy winters. And the same in many parts of the Southern Hemisphere, where the Antarctic is now melting. How about Alaska, which has cooled by 2.4F over the past 10 years, and would not be subject to the same forces as Europe? The simplest explanation? Cooling. But that explanation doesn’t bring the government grant money.

BTW, even if the feedback from warming in the Arctic is causing cold Northern European winters, it still wouldn’t prove anthropogenic causation.

Biden On Gun Control: “This Is Just The Beginning”

Someone let Joe Biden off his leash again, and he said something about gun control that we all figured

(The Blaze) Vice President Joe Biden said Wednesday the expected upcoming Senate votes on gun control are only the beginning of the White House’s fight strengthen gun laws.

During a conference call organized by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Biden assured supporters that the push gun control would not end with the current proposed bill, saying, “Let me say this as clearly as I can: this is just the beginning,” according to the Washington Times.

No one should be surprised that people and groups like Biden, Obama, elected Democrats, Mayors Against Law Abiding People Having The Means To Defend Themselves Leaving Them At The Mercy Of Criminals, etc, want to go much further than what they have already proposed, much of which infringes on our Constitutional Rights (real ones that are actually written down, rather than those ones that have been invented), and makes law abiding citizens criminals. What they want is to make sure that no one other than themselves, their bodyguards, and the police have guns….well, at least when we’re talking about law abiding citizens. These same people aren’t working very hard to go after the illegal guns and those who have them. Nor does their legislation target them.

The American people are way ahead of their political leaders,” Biden argued. “And we, the president and I and the mayors, intend to stay current with the American people.”

Poor Joe. Support for the draconian new laws has dropped below 50% as of late. Even only 66% of Democrats support the new laws. Most people would prefer that Joe, Obama, and all these mayors actually enforce existing law instead of trampling the Constitution. Oh, and hey, perhaps Joe could explain just how well all these draconian laws on law abiding citizens are working in Chicago?

Just remember, as Joe states, this is just the beginning. The end game is not a few “common sense restrictions” but removing guns from most people’s hands.

Tolerant Liberal Principle Bans Use Of The Word “Easter”

Typical

(The Blaze) Heritage Elementary School in Madison, Alabama is taking the word “Easter” out of Easter, according to WHNT19 News.

What does that mean? Well, they’ll still tolerate someone dressed as a giant bunny, but it will no longer be called the “Easter bunny.” Similarly, “Easter eggs” are just “eggs,” and it might be better just to use “different shapes.”

School principal Lydia Davenport said with a smile: “Kids love the bunny, and we just make sure we don’t say ‘the Easter bunny’ so that we don’t infringe on the rights of others, because people relate the Easter bunny to religion. A bunny is a bunny and a rabbit is a rabbit.”

How about the fact that you’re infringing on the Rights of those who celebrate Easter? Ever notice that tolerance from Progressives tends to only include things that they agree with?

Ms. Davenport should, since she doesn’t want to infringe on the rights of others, immediately cancel all leave for school employees for Easter (many schools are off at this time or get Friday or Monday off), as well as telling all employees that they will be working on Christmas. Hey, if she doesn’t like religion in the schools……

School Video Teaches That US Deserved 9/11

At every turn, Progressives are intent on blaming and destroying America. Since they are heavily represented within the educational system, this is the kind of thing they use to teach the children

(The Blaze) Americans everywhere were outraged to discover fifth grade students in Texas were being taught that United States foreign policy decisions helped cause the tragic 9/11 terrorist attacks. TheBlaze reported last week that students in Corpus Christi, Texas were required to watch a controversial video, distributed by digital education company Safari Montage, and then take an accompanying quiz that placed blame on the U.S., not radical Islam, for the 2001 World Trade Center attacks, which left nearly 3,000 people dead.

Following a firestorm over the quiz question, Safari Montage pulled the question from its program. However, the company has no plans to pull the actual video, which essentially teaches the exact same point found in the quiz question. The company that created the video, Schlessinger Media, just so happens to be owned by Safari Montage.

This video, entitled “Remembering September 11”. Here’s how the video goes

Kid: “Why would the terrorists be so mad at us anyway?”

Man: “A lot of people blame the United States for problems around the world.”

Kid: “I don’t get it.”

Man: “America is such a big and powerful country that the decisions we make here affect other countries around the world. And a lot of people think that we don’t use our power the right way. That’s because sometimes the things we do here can have a negative effect on other countries. And a lot of people disagree with the decisions and policies that the United States has.”

The video also tries to brush over the Islamists who perpetrated 9/11 while attempting to paint every Muslim as being peaceful (no mention of all the ones dancing and celebrating as 9/11 occurred and afterwards) and as being persecuted in the wake of the attack.

Head over to the link for the video.

Settled Science: The Planet Is No Longer Warming

At least at the moment. What will happen next is anyone’s guess. Will we see the temperatures creep up again? Will we see a big dip like from the late 40’s to late 70’s? Will they fluctuate up and down like during the past 15-17 years? What we do know is that the Warmist prognostication that CO2 is the primary driver which would have meant that global temperatures should have continued to clime is dead wrong (via Climate Depot)

(Quadrant Online) The IPCC report of 2007 came and went, failing to detect – or at least failing to acknowledge – that global warming was no more. On the contrary, “it’s worse than we thought” was the rallying cry throughout the lead-up to the COP15 at Copenhagen.

But the prevarication couldn’t last forever. Three years ago, CRU’s Phil Jones admitted to the BBC that there had been no statistically significant warming since 1995.

The pace picked up when the UK Met Office models surreptitiously projected a 20-year standstill on Christmas Eve 2012; and then James Hansen – oft described as the father of global warming – confirmed “a pause” of a decade or more. Now the whole house of cards finally tumbled, with Rajendra Pachauri, official spokesman for the IPCC, confirming in Melbourne that global temperatures had plateaued for 17 years.

Will global warming ever start again? Nobody knows.

Now, Climate Astrologers will say that 15, 16, 17 years is not long enough to make policy on a trend or even to notice. We already know what the actual data says about the trends. What about Warmists?

The 1992 Rio Conference founded a major international treaty on a warming trend that was 12 years old. Hansen’s 1988 launch of the DAGW campaign was little more than a decade after scientists had feared the beginning of a new ice age.

Barry Brill, the post author, points out that many organizations and Warmists, including NOAA and Gavin Schmidt, have said that 15 years is a trend. Warmists can throw up their little chart in an attempt to show that there is this constant upward tick on the global thermometer, but that’s not the way science works, nor is it representative of what the climate has actually done.

The statistical fact is that the late 20th century warming trend is history. It is over. It is so yeterday. As Monty Python’s immortal “Dead Parrot” sketch illustrates so vividly, there is a vast gulf between  “resting” and “dead”.

Remember, we on the Climate Realist side are not arguing whether or not the world has warmed, we are arguing causation. If it was primarily caused by CO2 increases we’d see a continued upwards trend. Yet, 15-17 years of a flat global trend, and only a .28F increase since 1990.

Maddow: “Rights are not supposed to be open to popularity contests”

In arguing in support for same sex marriage, Rachel Maddow‘s blog (the post is actually written by Steve Benen) actually makes the case that The Government, and we’re looking at mostly elected Democrats, should back off on gun control

Rights are not supposed to be open to popularity contests. Throughout American history, if all contentious decisions over civil rights were left solely to popular will and the political process, progress would have been very slow, indeed. It’s precisely why Americans have turned to their last available option — the courts — as a way of ensuring their rights are protected.

What Benen’s referring to is Justice Samuel Alito’s “provocative” question on whether the Court should be ruling on same sex marriage, as there is no data on whether it is good or bad, since it is “newer than cell phones and the Internet.” Well, guns are a lot older than any of those, as is the Right as written in the Bill Of Rights, and the Right is not subject to a popularity contest into restricting that Right.

And, really, marriage of any form is not in the Constitution. One could look towards the Declaration of Independence to see “pursuit of happiness”. Now, I’ve always said that I support civil unions for same sex marriage: this is America, founded on the principles of Classic Liberalism, where if it isn’t harming you, there’s no reason it shouldn’t be legal. Why should people who love each other be denied the ability to be recognized as joined in the eyes of the law? Leave marriage, a religious institution, to the religious organizations.

That said, if gay marriage wins, will The Government require churches to perform them, an obvious violation of the 1st Amendment? Will churches, mosques, synagogues, pastors, priests, clerics, etc be held liable for criminal and/or civil penalties if they refuse to perform a gay marriage? Would one be charged with a “hate crime” if they refuse?

Second, if gay marriage is OK, why not polygamous/bigamous marriage? One of the main arguments for same sex marriage is that it denies the right of equality to same sex couples. Yet, those who want to voluntarily engage in a polygamous/bigamous marriage have been denied under law for hundreds of years. It is a felony to be married to more than one person at a time. What if these people love each other? Is it hurting anyone else? Where’s the equality? You may think that’s a specious argument, but, it shows that certain forms of marriage have been banned under the law.

BTW, Megan McCardle says same sex marriage opponents should understand that this is the best it’s going to get

…this is a landmark victory for the forces of staid, bourgeois sexual morality.  Once gays can marry, they’ll be expected to marry.  And to buy sensible, boring cars that are good for car seats.  I believe we’re witnessing the high water mark for “People should be able to do whatever they want, and it’s none of my business.”  You thought the fifties were conformist?  Wait until all those fabulous “confirmed bachelors” and maiden schoolteachers are expected to ditch their cute little one-bedrooms and join the rest of America in whining about crab grass, HOA restrictions, and the outrageous fees that schools want to charge for overnight soccer trips.

Oh, and keep your filthy hands off my guns: my rights are not open to polls and popularity contests.
