Breaking: Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Az) Shot At Rally

Prayers for the Congresswoman and the others

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head outside a grocery store in Tucson while holding a public event, Arizona Public Media reported Saturday.

The 40-year-old Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a “Congress on Your Corner” event at a Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.

At least nine other people, including members of her staff, were hurt. Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson. Her condition was not immediately known.

The shooter was tackled by another attendee, and taken in to custody.

And, yeah, some of the typical insanity and blamestorming has started at the DU.

More: there are conflicting reports as to whether she has been killed. Let’s pray for the best.

And, yeah, the Left-O-Sphere is going insane. Witness some of the comments at Alan Colmes’ site. Joe. My. God. is typically unhinged, as are his readers. Yeah, language warning. Wonkette tells Arizona to get the f*** out of the Union. Shakesville is going with the lefty talking point that this is Sarah Palin’s fault. John Cole is begging his readers to stop with their insanity on the comments. Hey, John, you know you can delete the comments and close them down, right? The flood gates of moonbattery are open at Crooks and Liars. That’s as much stench as I can take.

Funny how so many liberals are looking to blame, rather then being concerned with the plight of Giffords and the others who were shot.

More: Fox News is reporting she is in critical condition.

President Obama’s statement.

And right on time, Andrew Sullivan engages in Palin Derangement Syndrome. And more from Sullivan, who is finding out more about the shooter, who, and I agree with Sullivan, is a disturbed individual, and, really, doesn’t seem to share the viewpoints of the the right or the left, or even the far endpoints of each, but a hodge podge of crazy.

I just hope she makes it through. The doctor in charge stated that she was shot straight through from front to back. She is alive, but who knows if she is conscious. At least 10 others were shot as well, one of them was a child. 5 that I know of are in critical condition and 5 are recovering. That is all that the doctor would say in the press conference.

  2. John Ryan says:

She was talking going in to surgery, and responding to commands. Gifford’s father said that her biggest enemy was the Tea party. He had expressed on YouTube The Federal Judge that was killed had received many death threats for certifying a multimillion dollar lawsuit against an AZ rancher by Mexican illegals. Both he and Griffins were hated by the Tea Party. Giffords office was shot up during the healthcare debate. Here is an article in Town Hall that decleares “open season” on Giffordshttp://townhall.com/columnists/JillianBandes/2010/06/21/open_season_on_democrats_immigration_on_the_front_lines

  3. Let’s hope she does, Kevin.

John, the Daily Kos also was pissed off at her, and the Democrats have done the same thing, ie, declaring open season, on both Republicans and Blue Dogs. And, did you miss that one of the shooters favorite books was the Communist Manifesto? Regardless, this guy has nothing to do with even the fringes of either of our political sides. He’s in his own form of batshit crazy.

  4. Kevin says:

Communism in itself isn’t bad, but it is impractical. As a society I don’t think we could ever have a communist system that works. Some people will naturally seek power, and when that happens in a communist system, you have oppression.

I also am not going to speculate about whether he did this because of political reasons. If he states that is the case, then fine, but even then, you can’t tie his actions to an entire political party. It is not like he was hired by the Republicans to do this.

However, what you can control is how you incite others. If you post a picture of a map on your facebook page and list the representatives that you wish to “target” with a bullseye, or you say things such as “Don’t Retreat, Instead – RELOAD,” or Nevada Senate candidate Sharron Angle advocating “second-amendment remedies” for some of the nation’s problems. (Washington Post). Then I think you should seriously reconsider your words and actions. Or Jesse Kelly and his campaign against Giffords where he advertised, “Get on Target for Victory in November. Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office. Shoot a fully automated M16 with Jesse Kelly.”

I know that very few people will actually be incited to violence by these words, and I don’t believe that they condone this sort of violence. But, you should at least be able to concede that this sort of discussion has no place in politics and there are some people that might take these words to heart. I cited only Republican quotations because those are the only I have heard of. As William Teach stated, the Democrats apparently do it as well. It’s time for our representatives to start acting like adults and think before they speak.

I don’t blame either party, but the rhetoric should be toned down. Here is a quotation from Gabrielle Giffords before the shooting:

“Are you afraid? Are you fearful today?”

“You know, I’m not. We’ve had hundreds and hundreds of protesters over the course of the last several months. Our office corner has become a place where the Tea Party has congregated. And the rhetoric has become incredibly heated. Not just the calls, but the emails, the slurs. So things have really gotten spun up. But you gotta think about it. Our democracy is a light, a beacon really around the world because we effect change at the ballot box, and not because of these outbursts — of violence in certain cases, and the yelling, and it’s just … you know, change is important, it’s a part of our process, but it’s really important that we focus on the fact that we have a democratic process.”

“I think it’s important for all leaders, not just leaders of the Republican Party or the Democratic Party … community leaders, figures in our community to say, ‘Look, we can’t stand for this.’ I mean, this is a situation where people really need to realize that this rhetoric, and firing people up, and even things … For example, we’re on Sarah Palin’s targeted list, but the way she has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gunsight over our district. And when people do that, they’ve gotta realize that there’s consequences to that action.”

“In the years that some of my colleagues have served, twenty, thirty years, they’ve never seen it like this. We have to work out our problems by negotiating, working together, hopefully Democrats and Republicans.”

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, March 25, 2010.

  5. No, communism as a political leaning at its core is not bad, it’s just how folks like Marx and Engels, Lenin, etc, want to, and did implement it (not too mention countries like China, North Vietnam, etc.) More totalitarian than anything else.

There was harsh violent type rhetoric coming from Dems, but, really, I think too often people, both left and right (take a look at the cesspool of comments at Ben Smith’s blog), want to jump to the conclusion that the crazy person is part of the other party, when, really, the person, regardless of politics, is nuts, and doesn’t represent the whole, or, heck, even the minority.

  6. captainfish says:

John, you racist bigot antisemite. People have been killed today by a crazy person. Get off your high broken horse and at least have an ounce of sympathy for those innocent lives lost and damaged!!!

You incoherent excuse for a human!!

Yes, Teach, it is amazing how far the left has gone wacko in order for this nutjob to be linked to their belief system. It is a sad day and they can only do nothing but defame, criticize and attack.

My prayers are with those families who lost loved ones and Rep Giffords. I pray that she recovers. You know what could be a miracle – seeing how reports are that she was shot from front to back….. is that the bullet went straight down the middle of the two hemispheres. That would be amazing and miraculous.

For heavens sake people, the bodies of the slain aren’t even cold yet and people from both sides of the political spectrum are already trying to assign blame before the facts are in.

The attacker was a certifiable nutjob. That’s the only thing we really know right now.

My family’s thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.
