This is a new one on the list of Great Pause Excuses*
Forests ‘Held Their Breath’ During Global Warming Pause
Forests around the world, widely deemed the lungs of the planet, “held their breath†during the most recent episode of a so-called climate change hiatus, a new study has revealed. The findings are considered significant in predicting how ecosystems will react to rising global temperatures.
A team from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom showed that the global carbon sink — a forest, ocean, or another natural environment that can absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere — was specifically strong from 1998 to 2012, a period of 14 years deemed as a warming pause.
During this time when slower warming occurred, forests worldwide “breathed in†CO2 through the process of photosynthesis, but exhibited a reduced rate of “breathing out†or releasing the gas back into the atmosphere.
First Warmists tell us there was not pause/hiatus, then they turn around and give us an excuse for why there was.
In the study, the total CO2 amount gobbled up by forests slowed during times when warming is rapid, and accelerated during slower warming periods. Photosynthesis also remained constant during slower warming, but the forests emitted less carbon back into the surroundings.
Interestingly, this just happens to occur along the timeline of the pause. But, um, what causes this to happen? And, if true, sure seems like this is a natural process, does it not?
*much like the graphic, the list hasn’t been update in a while. No point. Warmists mostly trot out the same excuses in new ways.
Republicans are starting to release their plans to replace the deplorable Obamacare. Senators Bill Cassidy and Susan Collins introduced a very squishy plan. We’re awaiting plans from Paul Ryan and President Trump. And there were plenty bandied about during the Obama years. Which will win out?
(Yahoo Business) Sen. Rand Paul introduced the Obamacare Replacement Act on Wednesday.
The bill would remove parts of the Affordable Care Act, including the individual mandate and minimum standards for care. It would also provide a two-year window for people with preexisting conditions to sign up for care.
It also includes new provisions such as an expanded ability for insurers to sell plans in multiple states and a $5,000 tax credit that people can put toward a health savings account.
The bill, named the Obamacare Replacement Act, would eliminate several provisions of the ACA, including the individual mandate and minimums on coverage standards. The bill’s fact sheet doesn’t mention any provision to allow parents to keep a child on their insurance until they turn 26.
For all the humor at kids staying on their parents insurance that late, it’s actually a good way to keep the young and healthy in the insurance pools.
Interestingly, Paul’s plan would provide a two-year window for people with preexisting conditions to sign up for care. It would then revert to pre-ACA rules in which people with preexisting conditions could still get coverage in the group market. It’s unclear what would happen to people with preexisting conditions in the individual market after the two-year open-enrollment period.
Well, if they have preexisting conditions, one would think that they would sign up. One thing that seems to be missing from most plans is the notion of not being kicked off plans for getting sick. It’s a little different from getting kicked off your auto insurance plan because you’re a terrible driver.
Additionally, the bill would provide every American a tax credit worth up to $5,000 for contributions to a health savings account to put toward health insurance and other healthcare costs.
“Getting government out of the American people’s way and putting them back in charge of their own healthcare decisions will deliver a strong, efficient system that doesn’t force them to empty out their pockets to cover their medical bills,” Paul, who is also an ophthalmologist, said in a press release announcing the bill.
And that’s the whole point.
The Editorial Board of the Washington Post, each of whom are far removed from the problems caused by illegal immigration and loosely vetted “Syrian” refugees, living in posh homes well away from those issues, is a bit upset. What they truly mean is that Trump’s immigration is against Democratic Party values
Trump’s politicized immigration acts are at odds with American values
IN A brief appearance Wednesday at the Department of Homeland Security, President Trump went out of his way to paint illegal immigrants as dangerous predators, making no distinction between the relative few who have committed serious crimes and the vast majority of an estimated 11 million who have led peaceful and productive lives in this country, in most cases for more than 15 years. Intoning the names of family members whose loved ones were killed by undocumented immigrants, he asserted their plight had been ignored, and ordered that an office be established at DHS to help the victims of such crimes, thereby adding social services to the department’s core security mission.
First, how do we know which ones will commit crimes and which won’t? There are more than enough stories about Dreamers being part of criminal activity. It matters little whether they have committed serious crimes: they are unlawfully present in this country, many of whom intentionally overstayed their visas.
It is fantastic how, suddenly, intoning the names of family members is seemingly a Bad Thing for the WPEB. They usually love having human shields.
Mr. Trump also made clear he is willing to throw billions of dollars at a problem that has mostly been fixed, paying for ostensible solutions that won’t do much good: construction of a wall and the hiring of 5,000 new Border Patrol officers, as well as many additional Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.
In fact, the nation’s southern border is already well staffed with Border Patrol agents, whose numbers have more than doubled, under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, since the Sept. 11 attacks. The number of illegal crossings is near a 40-year low. If the goal is really to make the border even more secure, better technology would be the way to go. If Congress goes along, a lot of money will be wasted, given cost estimates for the wall alone well in excess of $10 billion — but it won’t be the first time the U.S. government has managed to misspend vast sums.
Wait, I thought Democrats loved spending public money and increasing the size of government? And misspending it? It don’t remember all this caterwauling about Obama’s trillion dollar stimulus.
I will agree that there are better methods available, as the editorial says. There are certain areas that would be great for a wall, which could stop or slow down border jumpers, giving the BP time to show up. And, it’s really necessary to give illegals reasons to not come and not overstay their visas, like slamming companies with massive criminal and civil penalties, disallowing them housing, driving privileges, and other benefits. If they’re here on a visa, make companies and education centers responsible for tracking, and firing/kicking out when it expires, along with contacting ICE.
Far more damaging, to American principles and the nation’s standing in the world, would be actions outlined in a draft executive order, apparently awaiting Mr. Trump’s signature, that would drastically curtail the United States’ commitment to accept refugees from Muslim-majority countries in the Mideast, especially Syria, most of whom are fleeing terrorism. Such refugees should be subject to extensive background checks and other vetting before being granted U.S. visas — as they already are. But a blanket ban would compromise this nation’s long-standing position as a sanctuary for desperate and innocent people. As a backdoor way for Mr. Trump to partially make good on his proposed Muslim ban, it also would be an affront to this country’s status as an example of religious tolerance.
Interestingly, the vast majority of refugees brought in have been Muslim, not Christians who are being persecuted (and killed) in Muslim areas. I don’t remember the WPEB making a big deal out of Obama working hard to deport an asylum seeking German family, who were Christians and homeschooled their kids.
We’ve seen how well allowing all these refugees is working in Germany, Sweden, France, Greece, Italy, and the other EU nations, what with the rapes, sexual assaults, demeaning of women, crime, and so forth. People kicked out of their homes to accommodate the rapeugees, while women are told to not dress sexy and do not go out at night in their own neighborhoods.
As far as it goes, polls are back and forth. Some are supportive of a temporary ban, others are against. An August, 2016 poll has only 36% supporting the importation of the refugees. A Washington Post poll from June 2016 has 59% in favor, but, even the WP had to acknowledge that the phrasing of the question probably elicited higher approval than normal. Most polls run against the refugees.
Regardless, Trump won. We were told this time and again about Obama as he jammed his uber-leftist agenda. We’re more than happy to accept people who want to come to the US and be part of our great melting pot. From what we’re seeing, especially throughout Europe, is that these refugees want the Europeans to adapt to their beliefs and mores. And Europeans are starting to revolt.

Trump signed many executive orders today, one of them being on sanctuary cities
(CNN) The executive orders also seek to end sanctuary cities and the practice of releasing undocumented immigrants detained by federal officials before trial. White House press secretary Sean Spicer said the executive action directed at sanctuary cities would strip grant funding for cities that “harbor illegal immigrants.”
This has not made the pro-illegal alien weenies happy, but
(USA Today) In what could become a major conflict between President Trump and local governments, the showdown on “sanctuary cities” likely will result in legal challenges testing how far the White House can go in dictating its priorities.
Trump will be armed with a range of powerful options, including federal lawsuits and the power to withhold hundreds of millions of dollars in grants that states and cities rely on.
Here’s the thing: Democrats loved how Obama used his pen and phone, which, of course, was primarily his pen, signing EOs left and right. We told them this could come around and bite them in the posterior. At the end of the day, though, sanctuary cities are violating federal and state law. If they don’t want to support the law, well, there are consequences.
The text of the EO is available here (pt 1) and here (pt 2). Twitchy has a smattering of tweets of unhinged liberals losing it over this order, and I’ve run across plenty more on Twitter. Here’s my favorite
Defunding sanctuary cities is not an attack on illegal immigrants–it is an attack on Americans who don't agree with the president.

That’s interesting. 2nd Amendment supporters have been saying that “comprehensive gun reform” is not an attack on criminals, but on law abiding citizens. Of course, the vast majority of gun owners are staying within the law. Sanctuary cities aren’t.

They apparently aren’t taking the orders to shut their mouths for the moment very well (hey, remember how government employees and the media freaked after Obama’s gag order? Me neither)
(UK Telegraph) Scientists are planning a march against Donald Trump after his administration enforced what is said to be a temporary media blackout on the Environmental Protection Agency.
The organisation’s social media accounts have been silent since Friday’s inauguration.
The new rules ban staff from publishing social media posts, press releases or blog posts and stops them publicising publicly-funded research. (snip)
Organisers of the Scientists March on Washington have stated they plan to stand up to the Trump Administration and organise marches across the country.
They wrote in a blog post: “Although this will start with a march, we hope to use this as a starting point to take a stand for science in politics. Slashing funding and restricting scientists from communicating their findings (from tax-funded research!) with the public is absurd and cannot be allowed to stand as policy.
There’s no announced date and time for the march, nor do we know who plans to take long fossil fueled trips to D.C., but, we know who can participate
Anyone who believes in empirical science. That’s it. That’s the only requirement.
So, that pretty much leaves the vast majority of the government funded “climate scientists” out of the mix, since the believe more in consensus than the Scientific Method. And, they seem to care more about being Social Justice Warriors than anything else
We will both have a diversity committee and a diverse steering committee that represents people of many backgrounds and identities.
Science is done by POC, women, immigrants, LGBTQ, indigenous people, people of all beliefs and non-belief. We hope that this diversity is reflected in both the leadership of the march and the march itself.
Oh, and they can’t figure out how to fix their header on the most basic of blogs, Blogspot, which is titled “Scientists’ March On Washington.” Yes, all bloggers make mistakes. I make plenty in my headlines, since, I so often forget to check them. But, I can fix them.
Are scientists going to march on Washington? Yes we are! https://t.co/9MzZVgiQ7Q
— March For Science (@MarchForScience) January 25, 2017
Can’t wait to see how many take fossil fueled trips.
BTW, apparently there are some folks working for the government who need to be fired
There is now also an unofficial National Parks staff Twitter account, which claims to be manned by Government staff.
They tweeted: “Can’t wait for President Trump to call us FAKE NEWS. You can take our official twitter, but you’ll never take our free time!”
Find new jobs if you don’t like working for your boss.

Another anonyously sourced article proclaiming that Team Trump has done something, and it totally means doom
Trump administration tells EPA to cut climate page from website: sources
U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has instructed the Environmental Protection Agency to remove the climate change page from its website, two agency employees told Reuters, the latest move by the newly minted leadership to erase ex-President Barack Obama’s climate change initiatives.
The employees were notified by EPA officials on Tuesday that the administration had instructed EPA’s communications team to remove the website’s climate change page, which contains links to scientific global warming research, as well as detailed data on emissions. The page could go down as early as Wednesday, the sources said.
“If the website goes dark, years of work we have done on climate change will disappear,” one of the EPA staffers told Reuters, who added some employees were scrambling to save some of the information housed on the website, or convince the Trump administration to preserve parts of it.
The sources asked not to be named because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
Well, at least the main EPA page for Hotcoldwetdry is still standing. If they have ordered the page removed, none of the years of work goes away. Someone still has it. These fragile Snowflakes are confusing a website with actual data.
As Ronald Bailey notes
If Reuters’ sources are accurate, it’s pretty clear that the haste with which Trump and his minions are acting is meant to send a strong signal to the permanent bureaucracy that there’s a new sheriff in town. Presumably the actual data on things such as sources and amounts of greenhouse gases are not being erased and access to them will be restored quickly. It will be interesting to see how “alternative” the new Trump administration’s EPA climate change webpages will turn out to be.
Guess what? Trump won. He’s a climate change skeptic. That belief was wrapped around him winning. The Cult of Climastrology lost. Now’s the time to show that you really believe what you peddle by changing your own lives to match your rhetoric. You won’t be getting all the federal funding for your completely politicized “science”. Perhaps your deep-pocketed buddies like George Soros, Michael Bloomberg, Al Gore, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Tom Steyer can hook you up with some funding. Barring that, practice what you preach.

This is what Reuters and the NY Times are reporting. Will he? It’s all based on supposition, reading a Trump tweet, and anonymous sources
Trump to Order Mexican Border Wall and Curtail Immigration
President Trump on Wednesday will order the construction of a Mexican border wall — the first in a series of actions this week to crack down on immigrants and bolster national security, including slashing the number of refugees who can resettle in the United States and blocking Syrians and others from “terror prone†nations from entering, at least temporarily.
The orders are among an array of national security directives Mr. Trump is considering issuing in the coming days, according to people who have seen the orders. They include reviewing whether to resume the once-secret “black site†detention program; keep open the prison at Guantánamo Bay; and designate the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization. (snip)
“Big day planned on NATIONAL SECURITY tomorrow,†Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter on Tuesday night. “Among many other things, we will build the wall!â€
Mr. Trump will sign the executive order for the wall during an appearance at the Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday, as Mexico’s foreign minister, Luis Videgaray, arrives in Washington to prepare for the visit of President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico. Mr. Peña Nieto will be among the first foreign leaders to meet the new president at the end of the month.
Some Trumpites are having a fit that Trump is softening on deferred immigration, DACA, the Dreamers, which allows those young people brought into the country by their parents to stay. On one hand, the United States is a generous nation, and perhaps there is some accommodation that can be made, such as requiring they speak and write English, no criminal prosecution in their past, and the individual Dreamers eating some humble pie and not demanding that the US give them Stuff, like citizenship. Make them permanent legal residents, with the ability to gain citizenship after a period of time, say 10-20 years, where they pay a fine. Or serve a stint in the military.
The problem with DACA is that the squishes say “yes, their parents were bad, but, let’s not punish the kids. Oh, and since we’re not punishing the kids, we shouldn’t deport the parents who did wrong. And, they need the rest of their family. Just the grandparents. Oh, and we can’t separate them from their aunts, uncles, cousins.” This entices people to come illegally. DACA should be put through Congress, give the Dreamers a break, and make it explicit that any caught from this time forward will be immediately deported.
The refugee policy under consideration would halt admissions from Syria and suspend it from other majority-Muslim nations until the administration can study how to properly vet them. This would pave the way for the administration to slash the number of displaced people who can be resettled on American soil, and would effectively bar the entry of people from Muslim countries — including Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia and Syria — at least for some time. (snip)
The expected actions drew strong criticism from immigrant advocates and human rights groups, which called them discriminatory moves that rejected the American tradition of welcoming immigrants of all backgrounds.
“To think that Trump’s first 100 days are going to be marked by this very shameful shutting of our doors to everybody who is seeking refuge in this country is very concerning,†said Marielena Hincapié, the executive director of the National Immigration Law Center. “Everything points to this being simply a backdoor Muslim ban.â€
All we need to do is look towards Europe, and see what their acceptance of the “refugees” has wrought. Rapes, sexual assaults, crime, ruining towns, women who are told to dress differently so that the vast number of Muslim men do not harass them, and so forth. And there’s no telling how many of these “refugees” hold hardcore Islamic beliefs and are willing to act on them.
At the end of the day, Trump was elected on these policies. Hillary’s ideas of expanding Islamist resettlement in the US and blowing off illegal immigration lost.

Why are the Oakland Raiders attempting to leave and head to Las Vegas? It used to be that “if you ask why, the answer is money.” Now? According to the Cult of Climastrology, the answer is now ‘climate change’, because everything must be linked
The Raiders Leaving Oakland Is A Case Of Literal Survival
Another week, another NFL team moving. Unlike the Chargers going from San Diego to Los Angeles, though, the Raiders’ departure from Oakland to Las Vegas is well thought out and a good idea for everyone involved.
This week brought the inauguration of Donald Trump as president, which may seem to have little to do with the future of football other than the notion of bread and circuses. Remember, though, that Trump is a climate change denier. The policies he is likely to pursue while in office promise to do little to offset the problems caused by humans to the planet – in fact, it’s not unfair to believe things will get worse.
So, consider the Raiders. Their home stadium, the Oakland Coliseum, sits just across Interstate 880 from Airport Channel, which separates Oakland from Alameda’s Bay Farm Island. There’s a small waterway, Lion Creek, that cuts into the land off Airport Channel and runs along the north and east sides of the Coliseum’s parking lot.
According to the sea level rise maps made by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a three-foot rise in sea level would put the northern parts of the parking lot underwater.
With a six-foot rise, the entire Coliseum complex gets wet.
The Raiders are just getting out while the getting out is good, and heading for the other side of the mountains, in Nevada, safe from the encroaching waters.

See, there’s a bit of a problem with this:

According to the actual data from NOAA, it will take 2,400 years for that 6 foot sea rise to happen. Looking at the San Francisco data, it would be just under 1,200 years. This is all provided that the world doesn’t jump back into a cool period, which would be typical in the Holocene era. Of course, what Warmists say is that sea rise is going to suddenly accelerate and bring doom. And to many other NFL teams, as well.
