California Will Fight Federal Marijuana Crackdown Or Something

Suddenly, Democrats don’t like The Federal Government running things

(ABC10)  California’s Democratic attorney general says his office will vigorously enforce the state’s new recreational marijuana law despite the threat of a federal crackdown.

Attorney General Xavier Becerra on Thursday criticized U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ decision to end a policy directing federal authorities to take a hands-off approach to marijuana enforcement.

He says California voters decided it is best to regulate rather than criminalize cannabis. He says Californians “embrace, not fear, change.”

Becerra says the state’s Department of Justice will do what it can to protect California’s interests.

Obviously, this is in response to Jeff Sessions deciding that, hey, there’s actually a federal law that says growing, distributing, and using marijuana is illegal, and he plans on, get this, enforcing it. There’s a lot of wiggle room in the order, but, it has given many politicians and growers heartache. It’s even made some worry about (laughably) a midterm backlash.

I’ve made my opinion clear numerous times here: I really do not care if people smoke pot. I don’t. I used to, long ago. I find it boring now, though. Doesn’t excite me. But, if people are allowed to drink alcohol, a much worse drug than marijuana, then pot should be legal, and, more importantly, it should be up to the States. It should not be a federal power, except in terms of importing from other countries or across state lines, and, as to the latter, really only in terms of taxation.

But, it is a federal law that has been on the books since the 1930’s. If they don’t like the law, change it! They can’t pick and choose which laws are OK and not OK arbitrarily. Remember, for instance, how Democrats blew a gasket over Arizona’s SB1070 law regarding illegal immigration. They stated that federal law had primacy, and must be followed to the letter. Why is marijuana law different?

It’s So Cold That Iguanas Are Falling From Trees In Florida (and can you guess the cause?)

So this is happening in Florida

‘Frozen’ iguanas are falling out of trees in Florida. Please don’t pick them up.

One of the strongest winter storms on the East Coast in modern history has pummeled cities with snow and sleet, forcing schools and businesses to close while grounding thousands of flights.

And in South Florida, it is “raining iguanas.”

Green iguanas, like all reptiles, are coldblooded animals, so they become immobile when the temperature falls to a certain level, said Kristen Sommers of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Under 50 degrees Fahrenheit, they become sluggish. Under 40 degrees, their blood stops moving as much, Sommers said.

They like to sit in trees, and “it’s become cold enough that they fall out.”

This is not a new phenomenon — there were similar reports in 2008 and 2010 — though it is not typical.

It was actually happening so much during that 2008 winter that news media set up cameras to see if people were telling the truth. They were. And the cold can effect bats, which can also fall from trees, along with manatees, sea turtles, and other wildlife which isn’t used to such pervasive cold weather. So, of course

Anyhow

Washington Post Is Rather Upset That Trump’s Using Illegal Aliens As Bargaining Chip

Of course, in the world of folks like the Washington Post Editorial Board, pretty much everything makes them upset when it comes to Trump

Trump’s disgraceful use of ‘dreamers’ as a bargaining chip

AFTER ALL of President Trump’s bluster about his “great love” for “dreamers,” brought to this country as children through no fault of their own, it turns out he’s content to use them as leverage in a high-stakes game of political horse-trading. Mr. Trump seems willing to strip them of jobs, security and homes unless Democrats buckle on a range of Republican immigration priorities, including an even longer-standing object of the president’s ardor: a beautiful border wall.

This is just a continuation of the Democrats meme of a “clean” DACA bill, which gives illegal alien Dreamers some sort of legal status, which would primarily benefit Democrats, with no immigration security included.

It soon became apparent that Mr. Trump’s passion for his base, whose anti-immigrant fervor he stoked in the course of the 2016 campaign, exceeded his feelings for the dreamers. Prodded by White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller, a nativist hard-liner, Mr. Trump has made clear that his price for helping the dreamers is steep — not just the wall and additional funding for border security but also an overhaul of the immigration system to end family-based migration and the visa lottery, whose beneficiaries are mainly from developing nations.

That agenda is anathema to Democrats and would harm the country. It’s worth debating the merits of expanding visa quotas to allow more high-skilled and highly educated immigrants, but that’s not what the White House is pressing for. Rather, Mr. Trump is more interested in tearing down programs than building new ones. And, as he made clear, he now regards dreamers as a means to that end. Democrats, he said in a tweetlast week, are on notice that dreamers are out of luck “without the desperately needed WALL” and “an END to the horrible Chain Migration & ridiculous Lottery System of Immigration.” But the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program cannot and should not be the mechanism by which the United States’ immigration system is refurbished.

In other words, protecting the citizens of the United States from people who come here illegally/overstay their visas, along with bringing in relatives who do not speak the language, have few working skills, and won’t assimilate is “anathema to Democrats.” And by “harm the country”, the WPEB means ” harm the Democrats”, who’ve decided that illegal aliens come well before US citizens.

It is cute how suddenly the art of give and take in politics (and business) is “disgraceful.” Where politicians demand things in return for their votes on other things. Something which has always happened.

Similarly, though, remember all the editorials from the WPEB when Obama was holding businesses and statues and museums and parks hostage during the government shutdown that Obama caused? Me neither. That was disgraceful.

Democrats should be careful in their push for a “clean” DACA bill: they might become so shrill that Republicans, including Trump, decide to move on and not bother at this time. How would that help the Dreamers?

Bill Submitted To Ban New Fossil Fueled Vehicles In People’s Republik Of California

Well, how would all the celebrities and politicians get to all their gigs in tiny electric cars rather than limos?

(Engadget) Under a new bill introduced this week, every single new car sold in California after 2040 would be an emission-free vehicle. The bill, introduced by San Francisco Assemblyman Phil Ting, is in line with Governor Jerry Brown’s goal for 1.5 million zero-emission cars on the state’s roads by 2025.

In a statement, Ting said that, “We’re at an inflection point: We’ve got to address the harmful emissions that cause climate change”, and noted that vehicles that run on fossil fuels are responsible for nearly 40 percent of California’s greenhouse gas emissions.

If the bill is passed, the sale of new passenger vehicles powered by fossil fuels would be banned from January 1 2040, helping the state to achieve its target of slashing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent from 1990 levels by 2050.

Good luck with this. If it manages to pass, it’ll be forgotten or repealed in due time. If not, expect vehicle manufacturers to start pulling dealerships out of California, meaning a huge loss of jobs. California ports will be ignored for bringing parts, materials, and vehicles in to the U.S. Loss of jobs. Gas stations will close. Loss of jobs. And all the money the economy will lose. People will simply go to Nevada to purchase a vehicle. Will California restrict interstate commerce? Anyhow, again, good luck, PRC.

‘Climate Change’ Is Causing The Ocean Floor To Sink Or Something

This is a new one

Study: We’ve measured sea level rise wrong for 20 years – and it’s higher than previously thought

The ocean floor is likely sinking due to climate change, rendering sea level rise measurements over the last 20 years grossly inaccurate, Dutch scientists claim.

Researchers from the Delft University of Technology say the sea has risen four percent higher than previously estimated over the past two decades. They published their findings in the journal Geophysical Research Letters late last month.

It’s a circular situation, in which climate change spurs glacial melt which leads to higher sea levels and fuller oceans. All that water weight, the scientists hypothesize, warped the Earth’s crust by .1 millimeters per year between 1993 and 2014, the time period surveyed for the study. That may sound insignificant, but when coupled with the knowledge that the sea has risen by 84.8 millimeters since 1993, the picture starts to look much more terrifying.

See, what you have here is an attempt to manufacture a greater sea rise than has actually occurred, because sea rise is just not cooperating with the doomy prognostications of the Cult of Climastrology. Sea rise was exactly average for the Holocene during the 20th Century, and has not accelerated. It’s well below what we should be seeing for a Holocene warm period. Warmists can’t allow this bit of science to stand when they have taxes and fees and personal freedom restrictions and big government to enact.

Democrats Are Still Pushing Hard For A “Clean” DACA Bill

You can tell where the priorities of Democrats lie: rewarding illegal behavior coupled with creating conditions for more illegal behavior, all to the detriment of U.S. citizens and those who want to immigrate the lawful way

(Breitbart) On Wednesday’s broadcast of “MSNBC Live,” House Democratic Caucus Chairman Representative Joe Crowley (D-NY) stated that Democrats want a clean DACA bill and dubbed a border wall a waste of money.

Crowley said, “I think there’s a false premise here, in other words, equating security and border security with the DACA individuals themselves. They are not a security risk to the American people. They love this country. This is the country they know and love, and they are now in a state of limbo. And unless the president, who has promised to address this issue, works to make that happen in a clean bill, that’s what Democrats are looking for. A $40 billion wall is a waste of government money. … You can’t drive on it. You can’t live in it. You can’t do anything with it, and it really is just a waste of government resources. We have the security along our border that we need. And we can certainly talk about addressing some of the issues that need to be addressed, but let’s not conflate the two issues together.”

Except, they’ll never want to talk about those security issues afterwards. This is all about trying to find a way to give the Dreamers permanent legal status with the ability to vote. Then there’s this bit of moonbattery

(LifeZette) A former Democratic Party official insisted Wednesday night on “The Ingraham Angle” that Republicans must pass a “clean” amnesty bill for so-called dreamers if they want to stay in power.

But Steven Camarota, director of research at the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Immigration Studies, told Fox News host Laura Ingraham that the politics of immigration make that unlikely. He noted that legal immigrants who become citizens tend to favor Democrats by a 2-to-1 margin. So over the next 20 years, he said, immigration is likely to add an additional 15 million voters to the rolls.

“Quite naturally, the political system will reflect the values of the changing electorate,” he said. “So it’s hard to see if legal immigration continues, how a conservative Republican Party survives.”

Got that? We have to pass a bill that provides permanent legal status to illegal aliens who were brought by their parents, and the parents, and chain migration from the legalized illegals, otherwise, the people who come legally might not vote for the GOP.

Jose Aristimuño, former press secretary for the Democratic National Committee, told Ingraham that Trump will be a one-term president if he insists on concessions like a border wall and an end to chain migration as part of a deal to grant legal status to illegal immigrants currently enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

“If he wants to keep his job, he has to extend DACA,” he said.

Most of the people who put Trump in office are not particularly enthused by giving lawbreakers legal status. And part of why Trump won was due to tough talk on illegal aliens.

Meanwhile, the DHS Chief has a few thoughts on DACA

(Daily Caller) Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen says she would like to see a replacement for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, but she believes any legislative amnesty should apply only to the illegal immigrants who originally qualified for protection.

Speaking to reporters during a trip to view wildfire damage in California, Nielsen said the administration is committed to a “permanent” solution for DACA beneficiaries.

“Everybody wants to find a solution — a permanent solution — to DACA,” she said, according to the Associated Press. “I mean I really haven’t talked to anybody who has said, ‘Nah, we don’t want to do that.’”

But Nielsen emphasized that any DACA amnesty should be limited to the roughly 800,000 younger illegal immigrants who received protections when the program was in effect, not everyone who was eligible.

She says that no one, not the parents, not the relatives, not other illegals, should receive any sort of legalization. Period. And she’s right. If the parents are the ones who committed the “sin” that the kids (most of whom are adults and uneducated) should not pay for, then the parents should pay for it. Via deportation. I still say that any legalization should be coupled with the parents having to self-deport prior to any legalization, and are not allowed back in the country for years, and only then for a short visit. As I wrote in September

Here’s a recommendation: Congress puts DACA into law, but allows 4 year renewals, rather than 2 years, in order to decrease burden on federal agencies. Just like with people who are applying for citizenship, any serious crimes can be cause to cancel an illegals legal status and deport them. And, yes, even DUIs may be considered cause, just like with those applying for citizenship. After 12 years, they can go through the same process as those applying for citizenship in order to attempt to earn full citizenship.

BUT, if we aren’t going to lay the “sins” of the parent(s) on the children, we are going to lay them on the parent(s). In order to obtain DACA status, the parent(s) must self deport, and provide proof at an immigration checkpoint as they leave. They are not allowed back in the United States for 2 years, and then only for a short visit. If they are caught residing in the U.S., or attempting to enter the country illegally, the children will have their DACA status ended and will be deported. After 12 years, they would be allowed to apply for temporary resident status, conditioned on speaking English and having good moral character. This seems fair. The parents broke our laws.

If you don’t agree with punishing the parents, then you’re simply using DACA to create a backdoor amnesty for all.

NY Times: It’s So Cold Because You Drove A Fossil Fueled Vehicle

That, and your use of a hair dryer, ice maker in the fridge, the fridge itself, air conditioning and heating, washing and drying your clothes with machines, wearing clothes that you didn’t make yourself or buy from local manufacture, eating meat, not growing your own veggies, owning a gun, and so much more. But, there is an interesting admission

From the article

As bitter cold continues to grip much of North America and helps spawn the fierce storm along the East Coast, the question arises: What’s the influence of climate change?

Only in Cult of Climastrology World. Most people just say “winter.”

Some scientists studying the connection between climate change and cold spells, which occur when cold Arctic air dips south, say that they may be related. But the importance of the relationship is not fully clear yet.

Soooooooo, not clear yet, and, in science, this means research that says “yes, there is most specifically a link.” This is more like political language. Basically, this is an admission that this entire line of thought is a bunch of mule fritters.

The reason a direct connection between cold weather and global warming is still up for debate, scientists say, is that there are many other factors involved. Ocean temperatures in the tropics, soil moisture, snow cover, even the long-term natural variability of large ocean systems all can influence the jet stream.

Huh. If CO2 is the control knob, why can other things, like natural variability, constantly over-ride it? Why couldn’t it be primarily natural? Oh, right, then the Warmists couldn’t recommend taxes and fees and lifestyle restrictions. Here it comes

Much of the Northern Hemisphere is cold this time of year (it’s winter, after all). Cold snaps have occurred throughout history — certainly long before industrialization resulted in large emissions of greenhouse gases. And as with any single weather event, it’s difficult to directly attribute the influence of climate change to a particular cold spell.

But scientists have been puzzled by data that at first seems counterintuitive: Despite an undeniable overall year-round warming trend, winters in North America and Europe have trended cooler over the past quarter-century.

Obviously, in Warmists World, this means mankind’s CO2 output. To sane people, and those who actually practice Science, this means that climate changes, things happen, and perhaps the warming isn’t as strong as the manipulated, massaged, smoothed, and manufactured data says.

We’re Going To Need Floating Homes For Our Permanent Drought Flood World

Yesterday we learned that the Earth could become a drought world (unless you’re willing to be taxed and fee’d under the Paris climate agreement). Today we learn

Interestingly, before I started reading the article, the New Yorker gave me a pop-up ad to get me to subscribe as they’re “fighting fake stories with real ones.” Uh huh

Last June, not long after a catastrophic thunderstorm swept through southern Ontario, bringing a month’s worth of rain in just a few hours, a group of seventy-five architects, engineers, and policymakers from sixteen countries gathered in the city of Waterloo to discuss how humanity will cope with its waterlogged future. The timing of the conference was a fitting meteorological coincidence; in a world increasingly transformed by climate change, heavy rains and major floods are becoming more common, at least in some areas. In the summer of 2017 alone, Hurricane Harvey dumped more than fifty inches of rain over Texas, a monster monsoon season damaged more than eight hundred thousand homes in India, and flash floods and mudslides claimed at least five hundred lives in Sierra Leone. In the past two decades, the world’s ten worst floods have done more than a hundred and sixty-five billion dollars’ worth of damage and driven more than a billion people from their homes.

So, flood drought? Fortunately, the people invovled in this project are doing their part to bring about the permanent droughtflood world by flying all over the world to check out designs for floating homes.

English isn’t giving up. A few months after the conference, she flew to Vietnam, where she is designing two new amphibious houses that are slated to be built in January. She also has a grant from the National Research Council of Canada to begin developing guidelines for amphibious construction that the government can include in its official building code. English and other experts say that opinions about amphibious architecture are beginning to shift, especially as climate change makes innovative building solutions more urgent. “Usually, after a conference presentation, I’ll have people coming up to me and saying, ‘I’ve never heard of this before, this is such a great idea, how can I do this in my community?’ ” English said. “People don’t laugh at me anymore.”

Yes, I bet all the people out in the middle of America and Canada think this is awesome.
