The Point Of A Public Option Is To Create Competition?

Only in Liberal World, which is about as divorced from reality as Disney World is (but, without all the fun, laughter, and good times), could you get a quote like this

(Senator Chucky) Schumer (D-NY) said that Obama isn’t backing away from the public option.

“I believe at the end of the day we’ll have a public option,” he said. “What is the way to bring costs down? The good old-fashioned way is to bring competition,” said Schumer. “It is indeed essential to getting the costs down, which is our number one problem.”

In case Excitable Chuckles (not to be confused with Excitable Chucky at Little Green Nutjobs) has missed it, there is plenty of competition in the market place already. So far, it has worked to bring down costs that much. Why? Well, a few of the problems (not all, of course) include not being able to insure out of state and mandatory federal requirements for what ALL plans must cover. As a 41 year old male, I really do not think mine needs to cover hysterectomies and gynecology exams, but, they do!

Allow insurance companies to create pool plans across the country, not just cross state competition. This would benefit all levels, but, most specifically individuals and small businesses. Imagine companies like CIGNA and United Healthcare, among others, being able to create pools that encompass employees for companies that span the USA. Imagine the cost reduction.

How, exactly, will creating a public option, with potentially below market mandates, create competition, particularly when private companies are driven out of business?

I’m not sure which is scarier, that Chucky might actually believe what he said, or that he thinks Americans are dumb enough to believe what he said.

Oh, and if you want to create more competition, how about stopping all the demonization of insurance companies?

Typically other regions are like the North east where about 90% of all health insurance comes from one source. That does not strike me as a competitive environment.
