You’re A Racist If You Want Cheap Energy

And you want to kill black kids from asthma. How else can we interpret this David Robert’s Grist post?

Black people get asthma so everybody else can get cheap power

Dominique Browning gets right to the point in “The Racial Politics of Asthma.” I’m tempted to excerpt the whole thing, but this is the important bit:

In 2008, African Americans had a 35 percent higher [PDF] rate of asthma than Caucasians. A study revealed that one-quarter of the children in New York City’s Harlem have asthma. The following national statistics are even more jarring:

African American children have a:

• 260% higher emergency room visit rate.
• 250% higher hospitalization rate.
• 500% higher death rate from asthma, as compared with white children.

Why? One likely reason is that 68% of African-Americans (compared to 56% of whites) live within [PDF] 30 miles of a coal-fired power plant—the distance within which the maximum ill effects of the emissions from smokestacks occur.

It has long been the case that victims of air pollution are disproportionately poor urban minorities, especially children. A study last year out of Duke confirmed that “non-Hispanic blacks are consistently overrepresented in communities with the poorest air quality.” For the most part, this is just another way of saying that blacks are overrepresented in communities with high levels of poverty. That’s where the coal plants get put.

It’s not the first time Warmists (who use cheap power themselves) have tried a bit of race baiting, and it won’t be the last. Which is rather hypocritical, considering they keep attempting to get African nations to only install expensive “green” energy, not cheap coal, meaning Africans continue to live in squalor.

Obama 2012: The Campus Apathy Tour

The kiddies aren’t too excited for a repeat of Obama 2008: The Worship Me As A God Tour

(Bloomberg) On election night 2008, freshman Meagan Cassidy left Lake Forest College and hopped a train to Chicago to celebrate Barack Obama’s impending victory.

“There was probably no better place to be,” Cassidy said in a phone interview. The excitement generated that evening spurred her on to become an intern and then a field organizer in three congressional contests and two human rights campaigns.

Now a senior, Cassidy, 21, said she’s not working on a campaign this time around. She’s too busy looking for a job at a nonprofit advocacy group. She and her friends aren’t discussing the election as much as in 2008, she said.

“There is not much talk of Obama at all,” Cassidy said of the mood on campus, which extends beyond the president. “I don’t think anyone’s satisfied.”

I’d recommend that she look for a real job with an actual product, but, then, there aren’t that many of those out there, either. The unemployment rate for those 20-24 spiked as high as 17.5%, but, has come down a bit. Of course, if they took the Obama’s advice and got a degree in Bullshit, well, there’s their problem

“We left corporate America, which is a lot of what we’re asking young people to do,” (Michelle Obama) told a group of women at a day-care center. “Don’t go into corporate America. You know, become teachers. Work for the community. Be social workers. Be a nurse. Those are the careers that we need, and we’re encouraging our young people to do that. But if you make that choice, as we did, to move out of the money-making industry into the helping industry, then your salaries respond.”

All those 18-19 year olds who are now seniors or graduated now understand that Hope And Change means “update your burger flipping skills”.

The Lonely Conservative points to Obama’s bad week, and mentions the above article, with a line I’ll change a bit

It’s kind of hard to feel bad for him them, seeing that he’s they’ve brought all of this on himself themselves.

Liberal Calls For Katy Perry Boycott Over Latest Video

Can we finally put to rest that liberals support the military? Remember all the talking points about “we support the military, not the mission”? Yeah, not so much

(Fox News) Katy Perry transforms herself into a U.S. Marine in her latest power-pop single, “Part of Me,” which addresses female empowerment and pays particular tribute to service women.

However, at least one media type doesn’t support Perry’s Marines shout-out.

Prominent feminist Naomi Wolf, author of “The Beauty Myth” and one of many who were arrested amid the Occupy Wall Street protests last year, is urging Americans to boycott the singer, labeling her video “a total piece of propaganda for the Marines.”

“I really want to find out if she was paid by them for making it,” Wolf wrote on her Facebook page. “It is truly shameful… I would suggest a boycott of this singer whom I really liked – if you are as offended as this glorification of violence as I am.”

Remember, the Left went ballistic after Perry tweeted to #prayforIsrael, which she then backed down on.

I’m not a big fan of Perry: I think it is a shame that she sexualizes her video’s and lycrics, when she actually has a lot of talent. Her “Last Friday Night” video is a disgrace, since it is about high school kids having “menage a troi’s”. She’s already stated she wants to be a “teenage wet dream.” She lounges around stark naked in her California Girls video. Maybe I’m just getting older. But, come on, liberals, are you actually going to follow this idiocy by Naomi Wolfe?

This Year’s Hilarious Earth Hour Theme: “I Will If You Will”

You truly have to love Warmists: first they’re taking a whopping one hour out of their lives to supposedly turn all their lights off (but they are forgetting about all the vampire power, and should unplug everything) and pretend they live in North Korea. Then there is this year’s theme, which I have been dying to post for weeks

(ChannelNewsAsia) This year’s theme for Earth Hour that happens on Saturday at 8.30pm is “I Will If You Will”, a challenge-based platform that encourages people to go ‘beyond the hour’ to preserve and protect the planet.

Even as malls, government offices and corporations pull the plug on all but essential lights in support of the annual event to raise awareness of climate change, some companies have taken steps to make a change for more than 60 minutes and much earlier, too.

Singapore country CEO of Credit Suisse, Mr Lito Camacho, issued a challenge to his 5,000 staff a fortnight earlier, pledging to plant 100 trees if staff commit to reduce their carbon footprint, by 500,000 kilograms (kg) of carbon dioxide by end of the year.

Any notion of leading by example has gone completely out the window, not that most Warmists actually do anything of consequence in the first place within their own lives. Now they’re throwing out double dog dares to get others to Do Something. Considering they are spending one hour out of 8760 on a night and a time when it doesn’t really matter, that’s not that much of a sacrifice.

Looks like they will have to miss part of the Kansas v. Ohio State Final Four game tonight.

Here’s a favorite headline for Climahysteric Hour: “SPC: Our Planet, Our Time – Earth Hour 2012 TONIGHT.” Our planet, eh? Glad climahypocrites devote (maybe) one hour a year.

Earth Hour – it’s the best thing since sliced bread

Earth Hour is yet another way for the disconnected, self-absorbed masses to pretend they’re involved in an issue.

I have written previously on this issue (oddly, that was also a March 31st) and in that discussion observed that the likely cost to the environment to produce candles, t-shirts and all other manner of supporters’ paraphernalia was far in excess of the gains achieved by turning off a couple of light bulbs (but not the TV – how else will they know what everyone else is doing?).

Anthony Watts highlights some screwy thinking for Earth Hour.

Michelle Malkin highlights some eco-scams.

And don’t forget that today is also “Human Achievement Day“.

As millions of people sit in the dark during Earth Hour to call for action against climate change this weekend, a libertarian think tank wants you to fight the power by keeping the lights on.

The Competitive Enterprise Institute plans to commemorate Earth Hour 2012 with its “Human Achievement Hour,” 60 minutes to gather with friends in a heated home, watch television and surf the Internet instead of dimming or shutting off the lights altogether to draw attention to climate change.

Personally, I’m not a big fan: there’s nothing wrong with saving energy, which saves you money. But, I can understand the point of this counterprotest, mainly to highlight the stupidity of the Warmists who think of energy for 1 hour a year.

Finally, for all you chumps who plan on lighting candles tonight

Most candles are made of paraffin, a heavy hydrocarbon derived from crude oil. Burning a paraffin candle for one hour will release about 10 grams of carbon dioxide.

As Australian blogger Enoch the Red pointed out after last year’s Earth Hour that an average Australian who tries to replace all the light produced by an incandescent bulb with light cast by parrifin candles will result in about 10 times the greenhouse emissions.

Oops.

We’re Doomed: Climate Change To Cause Pandemics

Everybody panic, infers the Huffington Post

Climate Change: Flu Pandemics Linked To Strange Weather?

So, we are meant to infer that man-induced global warming resulting in hotcoldwetdry something something weather will cause flu pandemics.

What do the Pakistan floods, the Queensland floods, and the drought in Africa during 2010 and 2011 have in common with a hundred years of flu outbreaks? They may all be attributed to the ocean-atmosphere phenomenon known as La Niña –conspirator of El Niño. Together the two create the broader El Niño-Southern Oscillation climate pattern.

Changes in global atmospheric circulation accompany La Niña and affect jet streams and the behavior of storms in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres, often resulting in extreme weather bringing about floods and drought.

I’m missing the part about “climate change,” ie, anthropogenic causation.  Nothing in the story matches the headline. I guess we’re just supposed to male the jump that this natural process will be made worse. Like when everyone driving Hummers cause the Black Plague, killing 75 million during the beginning of the Little Ice Age.

If Only Sarah Palin Had Run…

That’s the headline over at CNN for an opinion piece, which raises some interest points. I’ll skip past the ones discussing the current GOP crop, get right to the meat

It didn’t have to be this way. If Sarah Palin had entered the contest, I’d hypothesize two alternative realities. One, she’d have the nomination sewn up by now. Two, she’d be running even in the polls with the president.

Despite my highly negative opinion (I had been a massive supporter) which started manifesting over the summer and was etched in stone when she missed her deadline in September saying to Greta “I can’t make a decision in 24 hours”, culminating in saying nope in early October, I think she could have been the contender, provided she had boned up on everything and actually competed in the GOP beauty pageant, er, debates. Alas, she didn’t even get her toes wet.

While it’s reasonable to speculate that Palin could have gathered a much stronger anti-Mitt coalition earlier –and broken out as the GOP front-runner sooner –it’s probably a bigger stretch to say that she would be running stronger against Obama right now.

Had she gotten in early and proved that she was more than plain spoken (a benefit) with the ability to write a Facebook post, that dynamic would have changed. She could have erased the BS media stereotype quickly.

The Republicans desperately need a candidate who can appeal to lower-income voters, who can rally men, who can gain women’s votes, who can bring out conservatives in large numbers and who can appeal to a younger demographic. All these things happened in the 2010 midterms, when the GOP made inroads into blue-collar households and middle-class suburbs on a policy platform virtually embodied by the Alaskan maverick.

She could have. But, she wasn’t willing to jump in the pool. I’ll stop right there before I go on a little rant. Suffice to say she could have made a big difference, and the Palin of old, the one who was so popular in Alaska, who easily attracted many demographics, could have, at worst, taken all the Bush 2004 states, which means a general election win.

Warmist Takes Unnecessary Fossil Fueled Flight To Compare Skeptics To Slave Owners

This is a fantastic way to get people to come over to the Warmist side

Climate-change scepticism must be ‘treated’, says enviro-sociologist

Dubious on warmo peril? You’re the kind who’d own slaves

Scepticism regarding the need for immediate and massive action against carbon emissions is a sickness of societies and individuals which needs to be “treated”, according to an Oregon-based professor of “sociology and environmental studies”. Professor Kari Norgaard compares the struggle against climate scepticism to that against racism and slavery in the US South.

To call this a silly comparison would be to reduce the silliness. Those who fought, and died, to stop slavery, and to pass the civil rights laws would and should be appalled by this idiotic, irresponsible comparison, but, we all know that the Warmists are desperate as their cult dies a slow, painful death, which is why we are seeing more and more unhinged, apoplectic, apocalyptic, and deranged garbage coming out daily.

The good prof is in London at the moment for the “Planet Under Pressure” conference, where she presented a paper on Wednesday dealing with how best to do away with the evil of scepticism and get the human race to focus all its efforts on saving the planet.

Hmm, looks like she isn’t too worried about the greenhouse gases she puts out herself. Hypocritical much?

According to an Oregon uni statement announcing the paper:

Resistance at individual and societal levels must be recognized and treated …

“This kind of cultural resistance to very significant social threat is something that we would expect in any society facing a massive threat,” [Norgaard] said.

The discussion, she said, is comparable to what happened with challenges to racism or slavery in the U.S. South.

If memory serves, racism is and slavery was a real issue. Globull warming is not. Rather despicable to even make the comparison, but, like I wrote, Warmists are desperate. But, they love traveling the world while telling others to stay at home.

“We find a profound misfit between dire scientific predictions of ongoing and future climate changes and scientific assessments of needed emissions reductions on the one hand, and weak political, social or policy response on the other,” Norgaard said. Serious discussions about solutions, she added, are mired in cultural inertia “that exists across spheres of the individual, social interaction, culture and institutions.

Do as I say, not as I do.

If ObamaCare Falls, The Obvious Answer For Replacement Is….Single Payer?

The Stateists are really, really worried about the fate of ObamaCare. They’ve already started throwing around blame and coming up with excuses, said excuses not including “hey, it was unconstitutional” and “people really, really hated the Mandate.” And they’ve also decided to push something else if Obamacare goes down. Witness Eugene Robinson

In arguments before the Supreme Court this week, the Obama administration might have done just enough to keep the Affordable Care Act from being ruled unconstitutional. Those who believe in limited government had better hope so, at least.

If Obamacare is struck down, the short-term implications are uncertain. Conservatives may be buoyed by an election-year victory; progressives may be energized by a ruling that looks more political than substantive. The long-term consequences, however, are obvious: Sooner or later, a much more far-reaching overhaul of the health-care system will be inevitable.

Our only choice is to try to hold the costs down. President Obama tried to make a start with a modest approach that works through the current system. If this doesn’t pass constitutional muster, the obvious alternative is to emulate other industrialized nations that deliver equal or better health-care outcomes for half the cost.

I’m talking about a single-payer health-care system. If the Supreme Court strikes down Obamacare, a single-payer system will go from being politically impossible to being, in the long run, fiscally inevitable.

So, let’s replace an intrusive, overbearing law (Obamacare) ruled unconstitutional and that people really hate with another that is even more intrusive, overbearing, and will lead to rationing, long waits, denial of service for seniors, pain pills instead of surgery, canes instead of knee replacement, and a large percentage take out of our weekly paychecks. I’m sure people would love that even more than Obamacare. How, exactly, would this work? In countries the size of our states, they already have trouble with single payer. Costs are out of control, service is poor, doctors work bankers hours, doctors often leave for greener pastures, the systems are deep in the red, and hospitals are a mess.

It’s hard to tell whether liberals are serious, or just attempting to say to Obamacare haters that there is a law of unintended consequences.

If Obamacare goes down in full due to there being no severability, or the GOP takes over the Senate and White House, and keeps the House, allowing repeal and replacement, some parts of Obamacare that are popular will have to be kept, such as “kids” being able to stay on their parents insurance till age 26, preventative care, no dropping people who get sick, and no denials for pre-existing conditions. That last one is already a part of the GOP plan.

Here’s an interesting by-product if Obamacare goes down either from the Supreme Court or repeal and replace: the takeover of the student loan industry by the federal government, which has already been put in place, will be left in limbo. There’s so much extra crap within the Affordable Care (snicker) Act that it’ll be hard to know where to begin in fixing this mess.
