If ObamaCare Falls, The Obvious Answer For Replacement Is….Single Payer?

The Stateists are really, really worried about the fate of ObamaCare. They’ve already started throwing around blame and coming up with excuses, said excuses not including “hey, it was unconstitutional” and “people really, really hated the Mandate.” And they’ve also decided to push something else if Obamacare goes down. In arguments before the Supreme Court this week, the Obama administration might have done just enough to keep the Affordable Care Act from being ruled unconstitutional. Those who believe in limited government had better hope so, at least.

If Obamacare is struck down, the short-term implications are uncertain. Conservatives may be buoyed by an election-year victory; progressives may be energized by a ruling that looks more political than substantive. The long-term consequences, however, are obvious: Sooner or later, a much more far-reaching overhaul of the health-care system will be inevitable.

Our only choice is to try to hold the costs down. President Obama tried to make a start with a modest approach that works through the current system. If this doesn’t pass constitutional muster, the obvious alternative is to emulate other industrialized nations that deliver equal or better health-care outcomes for half the cost.

I’m talking about a single-payer health-care system. If the Supreme Court strikes down Obamacare, a single-payer system will go from being politically impossible to being, in the long run, fiscally inevitable.

So, let’s replace an intrusive, overbearing law (Obamacare) ruled unconstitutional and that people really hate with another that is even more intrusive, overbearing, and will lead to rationing, long waits, denial of service for seniors, pain pills instead of surgery, canes instead of knee replacement, and a large percentage take out of our weekly paychecks. I’m sure people would love that even more than Obamacare. How, exactly, would this work? In countries the size of our states, they already have trouble with single payer. Costs are out of control, service is poor, doctors work bankers hours, doctors often leave for greener pastures, the systems are deep in the red, and hospitals are a mess.

It’s hard to tell whether liberals are serious, or just attempting to say to Obamacare haters that there is a law of unintended consequences.

If Obamacare goes down in full due to there being no severability, or the GOP takes over the Senate and White House, and keeps the House, allowing repeal and replacement, some parts of Obamacare that are popular will have to be kept, such as “kids” being able to stay on their parents insurance till age 26, preventative care, no dropping people who get sick, and no denials for pre-existing conditions. That last one is already a part of the GOP plan.

Here’s an interesting by-product if Obamacare goes down either from the Supreme Court or repeal and replace: the takeover of the student loan industry by the federal government, which has already been put in place, will be left in limbo. There’s so much extra crap within the Affordable Care (snicker) Act that it’ll be hard to know where to begin in fixing this mess.

Bummer: You Sent Email And Killed Gaia

I wonder what the carbon footprint of the Obama administration campaign is? Anyhow, all you Warmists should stop emailing

Green groups around the world are turning to social networking to drive their campaign for Earth Hour tomorow, when lights are turned off for an hour to signal concern about global warming.

But here’s the irony. With every email, every tweet, every appeal watched on YouTube or “liked“ on Facebook, environmentalists are stoking the very problem they want to resolve.

In emails alone, the typical office worker is responsible for 13.6 tons of CO2 or its equivalent per year, a French government agency for energy efficiency, ADEME, calculated last year.

So, looks like not only do you hate to give up emailing, especially all those mass emails from liberal groups that you forward, but you need to give up you job. Hey, live the life.

Ecotality: Yet Another Obama “Green” Energy Fail?

The Daily Caller has the story

GOP leaders are investigating Ecotality Inc., yet another troubled green-tech company that has received taxpayer funds and public support from the White House.

The firm has received roughly $126 million from the the Department of Energy to install roughly 14,000 electric car chargers, has donated thousands of dollars to Democratic politicians, and was showcased by President Barack Obama in his 2010 State of the Union speech.

But the company has installed less than 7,000 of the chargers, its subsidiary is being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission for insider trading, and it has only created 144 jobs, according to the federal Recovery.gov website.

The reason behind looking at Ecotality is

The information is needed to weigh the merits of Obama’s 2013 budget-request for $1 billion “National Community Deployment Challenge” program that would subsidize local governments’ support for green-tech vehicles.

The purpose behind the loans was to install home charging stations, free ones. Oh, and public charging stations. My bet is on the majority being “public”, rather than at people’s homes. Few people are buying the Volt or the Nissan Leaf, and really, since the people who do buy them tend to have incomes approaching $200k a year, perhaps they should pay for the stations themselves.

And, at that same “purpose” link, we learn

Ecotality officials hope the research project not only creates jobs – 5,500 by 2017 – but that it puts the publicly traded company in a strong position to serve the U.S. market for electric vehicles.

So far, 144 jobs. Which is typical with the Stimulus. The jobs just do not appear. But, Democrat donors do get payback in attempting to create a company which demand wouldn’t have.

Snap! Obama Budget Fails 414-O

Seriously, not even one Democrat could throw Obama a bone?

(Washington Times) President Obama’s budget was defeated 414-0 in the House late Wednesday, in a vote Republicans arranged to try to embarrass him and shelve his plan for the rest of the year.

The vote came as the House worked its way through its own fiscal year 2013 budget proposal, written by Budget Committee Chairman Paul D. Ryan. Republicans wrote an amendment that contained Mr. Obama’s budget and offered it on the floor, daring Democrats to back the plan, which calls for major tax increases and yet still adds trillions of dollars to the deficit over the next decade.

“It’s not a charade. It’s not a gimmick — unless what the president sent us is the same,” said Rep. Mick Mulvaney, a freshman Republican from South Carolina who sponsored Mr. Obama’s proposal for purposes of the debate. “I would encourage the Democrats to embrace this landmark Democrat document and support it. Personally, I will be voting against it.”

And embarrass Obama it did, when he cannot even get a single Democrat to vote for his bill. Ed Morrissey points out that Dems say they didn’t want to vote for it because this “version of Obama’s budget that contained only its numbers, not the policies he would use to achieve them.”

That’s an interesting excuse.  Budgets are all about the numbers.  If the President wants to keep proposing massive deficits, increased spending, and higher taxes, those policies are the numbers. Democrats are just embarrassed that the numbers add up to old-school tax-and-spend policies, and that they didn’t have a chance to obfuscate by declaring that Republicans are engaging in a war on left-handed Basque women who use marshmallow Schnapps for medicinal purposes.

E.J. Dionne Works Hard To Spin A Possible Defeat Of The Individual Mandate

As we await the decision from the Supreme Court regarding the Mandate, and perhaps even the striking down of Obamacare, liberals are searching hard for ways to show that the problem wasn’t the law, but with the people who rule on the law. I highlighted a bit of that yesterday. And here comes ultra-liberal E.J. Dionne, who attempts to paint the conservatives on the court as “activists”

Three days of Supreme Court arguments over the health-care law demonstrated for all to see that conservative justices are prepared to act as an alternative legislature, diving deeply into policy details as if they were members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

Senator, excuse me, Justice Samuel Alito quoted Congressional Budget Office figures on Tuesday to talk about the insurance costs of the young. On Wednesday, Chief Justice John Roberts sounded like the House whip in discussing whether parts of the law could stand if other parts fell. He noted that without various provisions, Congress “wouldn’t have been able to put together, cobble together, the votes to get it through.” Tell me again, was this a courtroom or a lobbyist’s office?

It would be a courtroom on a complicated issue, E.J. Courtrooms are a wee bit different in real life than what you see on Law and Order and other criminal shows on TV. Especially when one is arguing constitutionality.

It fell to the court’s liberals — the so-called “judicial activists,” remember? — to remind their conservative brethren that legislative power is supposed to rest in our government’s elected branches.

Justice Stephen Breyer noted that some of the issues raised by opponents of the law were about “the merits of the bill,” a proper concern of Congress, not the courts. And in arguing for restraint, Justice Sonia Sotomayor asked what was wrong with leaving as much discretion as possible “in the hands of the people who should be fixing this, not us.” It was nice to be reminded that we’re a democracy, not a judicial dictatorship.

So, it’s cool when the Liberal justices stray down the same “activist” roads. Gotcha. Anyhow, it’s good to know that one of the supposedly premier Washington Post writers doesn’t understand that we are a Republic, not a democracy. I wonder what E.J. would say about “judicial dictatorship” regarding Roe v. Wade, considered to be the worst, most unjudicial decision ever?

The conservative justices were obsessed with weird hypotheticals. If the federal government could make you buy health insurance, might it require you to buy broccoli, health club memberships, cellphones, burial services and cars? All of which have nothing to do with an uninsured person getting expensive treatment that others — often taxpayers — have to pay for.

Except, that is a central point of the argument: can the government force commerce? Has E.J. been paying attention at all to the case?

The irony is that if the court’s conservatives overthrow the mandate, they will hasten the arrival of a more government-heavy system. Justice Anthony Kennedy even hinted that it might be more “honest” if government simply used “the tax power to raise revenue and to just have a national health service, single-payer.” Remember those words.

Hmm, that sounds like liberal judicial activism. Anyhow, let’s wrap this up

This is what conservative justices will do if they strike down or cripple the health-care law. And a court that gave us Bush v. Gore and Citizens United will prove conclusively that it sees no limits on its power, no need to defer to those elected to make our laws. A Supreme Court that is supposed to give us justice will instead deliver ideology.

In my post yesterday, Bush v. Gore was mentioned. Now we have E.J. doing the same. I’ve seen references to it around the Web. It looks like Liberals are getting their talking points together, and will reference that ruling constantly.

But, the Supreme Court is not supposed to give us “justice”, at least not only: one of it’s purposes was to be a check against  the powers of the Legislative and Executive branches, to make sure they stay within the framework of the Constitution. Why do conservatives constantly have to teach liberals these things?

What Does The New Zimmerman Video Show?

Is this a smoking gun that there was no fight, that Zimmerman, and a witness, lied about a scuffle?

(ABC News) The surveillance video, which was obtained exclusively by ABC News, shows Zimmerman arriving in a police cruiser. As he exits the car, his hands are cuffed behind his back. Zimmerman is frisked and then led down a series of hallways, still cuffed.
Zimmerman, 28, is wearing a red and black fleece and his face and head are cleanly shaven. He appears well built, hardly the portly young man depicted in a 2005 mug shot that until a two days ago was the single image the media had of Zimmerman.

The initial police report noted that Zimmerman was bleeding from the back of the head and nose, and after medical attention it was decided that he was in good enough condition to travel in a police cruiser to the Sanford, Fla., police station for questioning. His lawyer later insisted that Zimmerman’s nose had been broken in his scuffle with 17-year-old Martin.

Mediaite is taking the position that this proves that Zimmerman was A-OK, that Trayvon didn’t attack him, break his nose, and slam his head into the ground. To my mind, Zimmerman sure looks fine, though his nose does look a bit swollen. One would think there would be some blood spots somewhere with a broken nose, though. As American Power points out

Again, the video changes no facts in the case. All it does is fuel speculation. The paramedics on the scene checked Zimmerman and declared him good to go in the squad car. If all the facts check out in favor of Trayvon, Zimmerman should be prosecuted. Meanwhile, due process must be afforded, despite Democrat lynch mob efforts to the contrary.

Exactly. Let the investigation continue. And, along those lines, I must say that Think Progress has an interesting article up with 5 questions that need answering. Though, none of them would really involve determination of what really happened that night.

Finally, over at Just One Minute, Tom Maguire links to a Baltimore Liberal Examiner opinion piece, and proceeds to tear it apart.

7. Much of the conservative “Blame Trayvon” noise includes the “fact” that he had been suspended three times from school over the last year. A school security camera allegedly caught Trayvon making a childish scrawl on a school locker and searched the child’s school bag looking for the marker. He also allegedly found Trayvon had a screwdriver in his possession and referred to it as a “burglary tool.” The school also says he had a bag with women’s jewelry that he denied knowing anything about.  The parents were aware of the tagging incident, but the news about the bag of jewelry came as a surprise to them.  But this raises the question, even if Trayvon Martin was the most prolific catburglar in his high school, did George Zimmerman know that, and what does any of this have to do with the shooting?  When he was killed all he had was the aforementioned candy and iced tea.

It’s not about “Blame Trayvon”: it’s about showing the facts, and about bursting the media bubble that Trayvon was a little angel. And, really, most of the information comes from media outlets, such as the Orlando Sentinal and Miami Herald, not exactly bastions of Conservatism. But, hey, if the writer is going to call the markings on the locker as “tagging”, well, that’s what gang members do.

Mandate Day 3: Perhaps Not Stricken Due To “Severability”?

An interesting point raised by SCOTUS blog

The Supreme Court spent 91 minutes Wednesday operating on the assumption that it would strike down the key feature of the new health care law, but may have convinced itself in the end not to do that because of just how hard it would be to decide what to do after that.  A common reaction, across the bench, was that the Justices themselves did not want the onerous task of going through the remainder of the entire 2,700 pages of the law and deciding what to keep and what to throw out, and most seemed to think that should be left to Congress.  They could not come together, however, on just what task they would send across the street for the lawmakers to perform.  The net effect may well have shored up support for the individual insurance mandate itself.

If so, it would look to be that the Court would not be arguing the Constitutionality of the mandate, but whether it would be hard work afterwards if it did. Which would completely miss the point of having a Supreme Court, the members of which take an oath to uphold the Constitution.

Interestingly, the typically unhinged Shakesville (which previously blocked me from commenting because I ask uncomfortable questions, but, hey, privately owned) raises an interesting point

What will Kennedy do? Once again, I am thrilled that one person has such a ridiculous amount of power in an ostensible democracy.

Me too. If only all the justices would consider American constitutionality when making a decision. But, then, the liberals on the Court would no longer be liberals. Of course, we aren’t a democracy. Republic. Book. Pick up now and then.

68% Disaprove Of How Obama Handles Rising Gas Prices

A good news/bad news poll. The good news

(Reuters) More than two-thirds of Americans disapprove of the way President Barack Obama is handling high gasoline prices, although most do not blame him for them, according to a Reuters/Ipsos online poll released on Tuesday.

Sixty-eight percent disapprove and 24 percent approve of how Obama is responding to price increases that have become one of the biggest issues in the 2012 presidential campaign.

Eighty-nine percent of Republicans said they disapproved, as did 52 percent of Democrats and 73 percent of independents.

That Independents percentage will hurt come election time, if prices stay high.

Bad news

Overall, 36 percent of respondents said “oil companies that want to make too much profit” deserve the most blame for higher energy prices. Twenty-eight percent of Republicans said so, as did 44 percent of Democrats and 32 percent of independents.

Twenty-six percent of all respondents said a range of factors was equally to blame, including oil companies, politicians, foreign countries that dominate oil reserves and environmentalists who want to limit oil exploration.

What this shows is that 36% are idiots, who have bought into the Democrat narrative that oil companies are evil and set the price. On the flip side, only 36% are buying the narrative, and only 32% of Independents.

But, yeah, it is certainly not all Obama’s fault. He does get a part of the blame for his policies, but, the problem is that Obama is handling this poorly, he is not coming out with policies to help alleviate the costs, and, remember, Democrats, including Obama, Blamed Bush for high gas prices, so, they are being hoist on their own petard.
