GOP Study Shows Companies Would Save Money By Dropping Health Care Offerings, Paying Fine

Highlighting what we’ve known for quite some time

(Washington Times) Trying to build their case that President Obama’s health care law will destroy traditional employer-sponsored insurance, House Republicans released a study Tuesday showing that the largest companies could save billions by kicking workers off their current health plans and pushing them into government-subsidized exchanges.

In a dig at Mr. Obama, who promised that the law would allow people to keep their current coverage, the report found that companies could save $4,821 per worker if they chose to end coverage and instead pay a fine — leaving their employees with no recourse but to buy insurance on their own through the exchanges.

“It is clear to me that because of this law, Americans will not be able to keep the health care plan they have and like,” said Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. He charged that the Affordable Care Act will make insurance so expensive that employers won’t be able to afford to offer it anymore.

Obamacare provides multiple incentives for companies to drop their offerings and push their employees to the Exchanges. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature. Of course, Democrats say this is bunk

Josh Drobnyk, spokesman for Rep. Sander M. Levin, the ranking Democrat on the committee, said official government scorekeepers had studied the issue and found that relatively few employers are likely to drop their coverage over the next few years.

Mr. Drobnyk said companies offer insurance as a way of enticing the best workers, and said that won’t change.

“According to the logic of this so-called report, businesses could have ‘saved’ even more money if they dropped employee health coverage years ago, which is perfectly legal and carries no penalty,” he said.

He’s partially right, some companies do offer health insurance to entice workers. But, in this century, offering health insurance, along with vision and dental (dental used to be the really big deal, for those of us old enough to remember), is simply considered part of the wages. Most companies, at least those with 50 or more employees, offer insurance. At least to full time employees. And there’s the rub.

I’ve offered this explanation many times within the blogs I post at, in comments, and in Real Life. But, let’s consider again: you are the owner of a company with over 50 employees. You offer health insurance. You’re spending anywhere from $8k-$12k a year per employee (the average costs across the board). You move your plans to a health savings account, which immediately lowers costs to $6k-$8k a year. But, Obamacare limits contributions to HSA, setting a cap at $2,500. Obamacare causes many other problems with HSAs, too.

But, you’re a good boss, and want to provide health insurance to your employees. You believe in social justice, spreading the wealth, and the “general good.” And, you’re generous in offering health insurance to your part time employees, though they would pay about 3 times what a full timer would pay. Hence, none of them get insurance through the company. Hey, you offered!

But, there’s a little problem: if just one employee gets insurance through the Exchange, you will be responsible for paying the fine, probably $2,000, for every single employee. You’re already paying roughly $350,000 a year to provide health insurance, just part of doing business. But, you’re really not keen on taking the chance that you will have to give the Central Government another $100,000 a year. Spreading the wealth only goes so far. So, you’re options are to a) take your chances or b) drop your insurance, perhaps offering $2k a year extra in earnings or a subsidy so your employees can get insurance on the Exchange, and simply paying the fine.

Companies won’t take the chance. They’ll drop their insurance. Which is what Obamacare wants, that way more and more people will be forced into the government exchange.

Bad News For Obama: He’s Up 47-43 Over Romney In North Carolina

Someone recently asked me “why do you rarely post polls?” Well, there are a couple reasons. First, we are pretty far out from the general election. Second, most polls now tend to be national polls, and in the larger scheme, they are meaningless. Obama could beat Romney by 10 million votes, but if Romney wins all the 2004 Bush states he’ll be POTUS.

The important polls are the state polls, and PBO has spent quite a bit of time in potential battleground states giving campaign speeches disguised as official business. And North Carolina is one of those states Obama has focused on. Ed Morrissey covered the poor economy of North Carolina the other day, as well as the issues with the NC Democrat Party and with choosing Charlotte as their convention site. Now, WRAL/SurveyUSA provide a poll that is bad news for Obama, and the headline tells us that Obama Tops Romney In NC

In a head-to-head vote, however, the former Massachusetts governor comes up short against Obama.

SurveyUSA asked 1,636 registered voters in North Carolina who would get their vote for president if the election were held today, and Obama beat out Romney 47 to 43 percent, with 9 percent of voters still undecided. The margin of error in the poll is plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

“This is going to be a very tight race for the next six months,” said David McLennan, political science professor at William Peace University in Raleigh.

You might be wondering why this is bad news for Obama as the headline states: looking at the poll data (link within the excerpt), we learn that the Republican/Democrat/Independent breakdown is 32/45/20, so, in a poll which  heavily over-samples Democrats vs. Republicans by 13, Obama only leads by 4 points. That, my friends, is bad news for Obama. Romney hasn’t even really started campaigning in NC as of yet. Furthermore, there is a good chance that Pat McCrory (R) will win the Governor’s mansion this year. It’s rare that NC has a Republican governor.

Digging deeper into the poll, we see that women, who traditionally break Dem, are over-sampled by 6 points. Only 19% surveyed were over 65, and that group tends to vote heavily. We do have lots of time to go till November, and anything can happen: one candidate can utterly flame-out, as McCain did with his “suspending his campaign” stunt. Those of us can expect many, many disruptive visits from Obama over the next 6 months, as Team Obama can surely read the bad numbers in the poll.

There’s also a poll for Virginia, where Obama leads 51-43. Allahpundit provides the sampling (which removes the need for me to email PPP, as it is not readily provided), which breaks 39D/32R/29I. Again, over-sampling, this time Dems by 7. Which gives Obama a tiny edge, with a long way to go.

Obama To Spike Osama Football Live From Afghanistan

Can you really blame him? He jas nothing else to run on. However, it’s a damned shame that he’s taken a great American accomplishment and turned it into a campaign slogan (via Hot Air)

(USA Today) President Obama made a surprise night visit to Afghanistan on Tuesday, signing a new security agreement and preparing to deliver a nationally televised address on plans to withdraw from the war now in its second decade.

Obama is scheduled to speak at 7:30 p.m., Washington time.

In his speech, the president is expected to mention the one-year anniversary of the death of Osama bin Laden, who planned the 9/11 terrorist attacks from a base in Afghanistan.

So, a primetime speech made at the equivalent of 4am Afghanistan time. Spiking the football. I’m waiting for liberals who who constantly complained about Bush bringing up his reaction to 9/11, taking action, etc (which Bush rarely did) to smack Obama down in 3….2…..2….

More: Phineas (here and here) compares Obama’s narcissism with other president’s generosity. The Lonely Conservative hopes Obama takes time during his spiking to thank those who actually performed the mission and did all the hard work leading up to it.

White House To Roll Out 10 Year Climate (hoax) Study

Gotta love how the White House, which puts out enormous amounts of CO2 in ferrying the Obama’s around to campaign events, the golf course, taxpayer subsidized vacations, etc. says this

(UPI) A 10-year research plan outlined by the White House will focus on how human economic activity influences climate change, the administration said.

The White House said it formalized a 10-year strategic plan for the U.S. Global Change Research Program. The plan will focus on the relationship between human economic activity and global climate change.

“Human actions are altering the atmosphere, the land and our oceans, placing new pressures on the Earth’s ecosystems and threatening the health and economic welfare of our Nation and the world,” Tom Armstrong, executive director of the USGCRP, said in a statement.

The study was done by “100 Federal scientists”….think there were any who disagreed on the panel? Oh, and unshockingly, here are their 4 action items (from the link in the excerpt)

  1. Goal 1 – Advance Science
  2. Goal 2 – Inform Decisions
  3. Goal 3 – Conduct Sustained Assessments
  4. Goal 4 – Communicate and Educate

Notice that all of them require lots of taxpayer funding, and none recommend that Warmists take action within their own lives.

“High-quality and well-coordinated research is essential if we are to better understand and predict future changes, develop strategies to minimize our vulnerabilities, and adapt to changes that can’t be avoided,” said Armstrong.

So far, all their research and computer models have been failures. But, if only we could just throw more money at it. As Tom Nelson points out “If the science is so settled, why do we need another taxpayer-funded 10-year AGW study?” I’d also like to know why the public has to pay $35 in order to read the 72 page review that was already funded by the taxpayer.

FBI Arrests 5 With Links To Occupy Movement For Bomb Plot

“Mostly peaceful”

(WKYC) The FBI says five people have been arrested in a plot to blow up the Route 82 bridge over the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

According to a written release, Douglas L. Wright, 26,  Brandon L. Baxter, 20, and Anthony Hayne, 35, were arrested by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force on April 30 on charges of conspiracy and attempted use of explosive materials to damage physical property affecting interstate commerce.

Similar charges against two other men, Connor C. Stevens, 20, and Joshua S. Stafford, 23,  were being filed this morning.

The FBI says the five are all self-proclaimed anarchists.

There was never any danger, the FBI was watching them from the get-go. Bill Warner points to the connections these people have to Occupy Cleveland and Sarasota, as does The Blaze. Besides, these anarchists (strangely) tend to support Left side politicians pushing big government. Go figure.

Banks Received “White Powder” Envelopes In Time For Occupy’s May Day Insanity

Occupy Wall Street is claiming this incident has nothing to do with the Stink Everything Up movement. Nobody is buying that

(CBS News) Police say the white powder contained in several envelopes that were mailed to various bank branches in New York City turned out to be non-toxic.

Police say seven envelopes were sent Monday to several Wells Fargo branches, a JP Morgan Chase branch and an office building. Telephone calls to Wells Fargo and JP Morgan Chase were not immediately returned.

Police say the suspicious envelopes caused evacuations of several bank branches, but no injuries were reported. Police had no suspects.

Representatives at some of the banks involved told CBS News the envelopes contained a note stating “Happy May Day.” The envelopes were sent on the eve of planned May Day protests around the country.

No smart thinking person could possibly not see the connection, and figure that at least one Occupier sent the envelopes. Jim Hoft has a nice little flashback into what we actually saw at the Occupy camps nationwide…you know, all the murders, rapes, vandalism, arrests, child molestation, etc, and let’s not forget the massive destruction of public and private property. And all the feces and jars of urine.

(Bloomberg) “We call upon people to refrain from shopping, walk out of class, take the day off of work and other creative forms of resistance disrupting the status quo,” organizers said in an April 26 e-mail.

So, their plan is to harm the individuals who work by not shopping, blow off their education, not work …. well, what’s the difference?…and become violent. Oh, look, Gateway Pundit points to violence already occurring in San Francisco.

A different CBS News article points out some of the disruptive tactics expected, including

In New York, protesters plan to shut down one or more of the bridges or tunnels into and out of Manhattan as one of many planned activities — and they have yet to announce which they will target, possibly to keep the police from being ready to stop them. (Plans are expected to be announced in Manhattan’s Bryant Park early Monday morning – and it’s worth noting that some Occupiers disagree with the plan for a blockade.)

In Chicago, Occupiers plan to march from Union Park to Federal Plaza; in Seattle, they will rally at a downtown park, and officials are warning of traffic disruptions and possible violence. In Los Angeles, where the focus is on immigrants’ rights, Occupiers plan to have four “Caravans” of protesters “taking over our streets on routes designed to bring to light to societies [sic] ills” that converge in the city’s financial district.

Who gets hurt? The average person.

Team Obama Finally Has Their 2012 Slogan: Forward

Sometime in the past year or so, I did a photoshop (first one)

Who knew I would only have to change it a tiny bit to the second one? (via Hot Air)

(LA Times) It looks like the Obama campaign may have settled on its slogan for the 2012 election: “Forward.”

Four years ago Barack Obama ran on another one-word slogan, “Change.” Now, as President Obama prepares to hold the first public campaign rallies for his reelection, his team is giving a sense of what his pitch to votes will look like.

As Ed Morrissey points out (the video is available at both above links)

Of course, that’s not the direction this video takes.  It takes over three minutes looking backward, including the first minute of what took place before Obama took office.  After a brief shot at Republicans who “tried to tear this President down” — by, er, opposing his policies, which didn’t seem to bother Democrats while George W. Bush was in office — we get a couple of minutes of ball-spiking over the deaths of Osama bin Laden and Anwar al-Awlaki.  When does the video get to the “Forward” part?  Er … when there are 50 seconds left in the video, and even then, it doesn’t offer any specific policy goals — just platitudes:

It’s kinda creepy

And the video is very presidential, in that he again attacks private citizens for daring to disagree with his policies

But there’s then a pivot that signals how the president will use what Democrats see as Republican obstructionism as a foil. Images of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity flash by, and then one of Mitt Romney.

Oh, and then there’s this

(Washington Times) The Obama campaign apparently didn’t look backwards into history when selecting its new campaign slogan, “Forward” — a word with a long and rich association with European Marxism.

Many Communist and radical publications and entities throughout the 19th and 20th centuries had the name “Forward!” or its foreign cognates. Wikipedia has an entire section called “Forward (generic name of socialist publications).”

“The name Forward carries a special meaning in socialist political terminology. It has been frequently used as a name for socialist, communist and other left-wing newspapers and publications,” the online encyclopedia explains.

I’m not so sure: I think Obama may have lifted the word from George Armstrong Custer, who I believe yelled it out right before the battle of the Little Bighorn.

Oops: Wind Farms May Have A Warming Affect

A wind “power” doubleshot today. On the bright side, there aren’t that many wind farms

(Reuters) Large wind farms might have a warming effect on the local climate, research in the United States showed on Sunday, casting a shadow over the long-term sustainability of wind power.

Researchers at the State University of New York at Albany analysed the satellite data of areas around large wind farms in Texas, where four of the world’s largest farms are located, over the period 2003 to 2011.

The results, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, showed a warming trend of up to 0.72 degrees Celsius per decade in areas over the farms, compared with nearby regions without the farms.

This is happening particularly at night, where the warmer air is drawn down when it should be cooling, much like happens when you put your ceiling fan on reverse.
