Oops: Wind Farms May Have A Warming Affect

A wind “power” doubleshot today. On the bright side, there aren’t that many wind farms

(Reuters) Large wind farms might have a warming effect on the local climate, research in the United States showed on Sunday, casting a shadow over the long-term sustainability of wind power.

Researchers at the State University of New York at Albany analysed the satellite data of areas around large wind farms in Texas, where four of the world’s largest farms are located, over the period 2003 to 2011.

The results, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, showed a warming trend of up to 0.72 degrees Celsius per decade in areas over the farms, compared with nearby regions without the farms.

This is happening particularly at night, where the warmer air is drawn down when it should be cooling, much like happens when you put your ceiling fan on reverse.

UK Telegraph: Wind Power Doesn’t Work

It should be noted, this is the view of the paper, not simply one pundits point of view, and the UK Telegraph, while employing a few Climate Realists, such as James Delingpole, and a willingness to provide alternate views, isn’t exactly right wing

(UK Telegraph) Wind generation accounts for a tiny proportion of our electricity supply and its impact on conventional power production is negligible. Perversely, if more turbines are built, more power stations will be needed as a back-up for when the wind is not blowing. Yesterday some turbines were shut down because the wind was too strong. On top of that, they also ruin the landscape. There are enough doubts about the efficacy of wind power to justify the increasing scepticism among Conservatives about its future as the cornerstone of the Government’s energy policy.

The question here is regarding PM David Cameron’s push for more alternatives, which is a worthy goal. Of course, wind power is not going to really replace fossil fuels, and ethanol is not only worthless, but, according to warmist doctrine, just as bad, if not worse, for the environment and globull warming. The Telegraph notes the “generous taxpayer subsidies” and that windpower is a miserable failure, to paraphrase. Perhaps one day, but, not today.

To my mind, if we have to dump godawful amounts of taxpayer money into alternatives, it should be towards credible research designed to produce feasible and usable solar and wind energy generation.

Fearmongering Today: If Court Strikes Down Mandate, States Might Have To Pass Their Own

It’s time for another breathless look in the crystal ball to find out “OMG, if the mandate is struck down, Bad Things might possibly happen!!!!!!!” Remember when the news used to be about things that have happened, rather than seeing reporters do their best Madame Zelda impression?

(Politico) If the Supreme Court strikes down the health reform law’s individual mandate, the states at the forefront of implementing the law could find themselves like Wile E. Coyote in the Road Runner cartoons: racing ahead only to discover there’s no ground underneath their feet.

These states were all counting on the individual mandate to make health insurance exchanges viable — because without a requirement for most people to buy coverage, there’s a chance that healthy people could avoid paying into the system, making premiums skyrocket.

How utterly awful! Healthy people would be allowed to make their own free choice as to whether or not to purchase health insurance in a country founded on freedom, including freedom to make your own choices and a freedom from government tyranny. One has to wonder how many states were counting on the mandate, since 26 are suing the Central Government over this, and took it to the Supreme Court, while most of the rest haven’t bothered implementing any Exchanges as of yet.

So a ruling against the requirement could force states to either consider enacting their own individual mandates — hoping people will be more accepting of them more than of a federal mandate — or pass other measures to draw healthy people into the system so their insurance markets don’t go off a cliff.

Everybody Panic!!!!!1!!! Or not, since we have no idea what will happen. But, if they do enact mandates, that is well within the boundaries of the Constitution. It would suck, but, it would be in keeping with our federalist system.

And, ironically, lawmakers in the states opposing the federal mandate might face intense pressure from local insurance companies to pass state mandates if the Supreme Court doesn’t also strike down the rules preventing them from charging more or denying coverage to sicker people. Insurers could frame a choice for these lawmakers: Either embrace the individual mandate or watch us close shop in your state because we can’t make a profit.

Interestingly, throughout the numerous number of future prognostications, the Politico forgets that there are, in fact, other options. Removing the large number of coverage mandates for what health care options insurance carriers must offer with every plan is one. Does a young single male really need coverage for gynecological issues, breast pumps, and mammograms? Do young women need coverage for prostate exams, male infertility, and testicular issues? Getting young people into the system would vastly increase number of healthy people to offset those who are more apt to get sick (or are sick), so, reducing the upfront cost would be a great boon.

States could band together to create larger insurance pools, if the Central Government would get out of the way. Increase the usage of health savings accounts. Allow portability for insurance from state to state. Allow cross state insurance purchasing. Na, Liberals like those at the Politico prefer the tyranny of a federal mandate over the possibility of a state enacting a mandate.

Poor Indian Women Undergo Forced Sterilization To Combat Climate Change (Hoax)

It’s long been a dirty secret among the Warmist crowd that there needs to be serious population reduction among mankind. Like with every other Warmist “solution” to anthropogenic global warming, they want Someone Else to bear the burden for Warmist notions, which is how we hear about the “pressing need” for “family planning” programs in developing nations

(UK Guardian) Tens of millions of pounds of UK aid money have been spent on a programme that has forcibly sterilised Indian women and men, the Observer has learned. Many have died as a result of botched operations, while others have been left bleeding and in agony. A number of pregnant women selected for sterilisation suffered miscarriages and lost their babies.

The UK agreed to give India £166m to fund the programme, despite allegations that the money would be used to sterilise the poor in an attempt to curb the country’s burgeoning population of 1.2 billion people.

The program of forced sterilizations has been going on for quite some time, and there are reports from the Indian government in 2006 and 2009 about “quality control issues”. The UK has been providing funding which ended up being used for these “family planning” procedures, and, you won’t be shocked as to the reason. Appalled, yes. Shocked, no, because this is what these far left Warmists want

Yet a working paper published by the UK’s Department for International Development in 2010 cited the need to fight climate change as one of the key reasons for pressing ahead with such programmes. The document argued that reducing population numbers would cut greenhouse gases, although it warned that there were “complex human rights and ethical issues” involved in forced population control.

One has to wonder how many other developing nations are doing the same with money from 1st world nations. The British department that provides the funding stated that they condemn using the money for the program and say they have taken steps so the money is no longer used for these programs. Well, now that the cat is out of the bag, of course.

Despite the controversy, an Indian government report shows that sterilisation remains the most common method of family planning used in its Reproductive and Child Health Programme Phase II, launched in 2005 with £166m of UK funding. According to the DfID, the UK is committed to the project until next year and has spent £34m in 2011-12. Most of the money – £162m – has been paid out, but no special conditions have been placed on the funding.

Next time you hear some Liberal start yammering on about family planning or “climate change”, ask them if they support forced sterilization for poor people in other countries. Expect hemming and hawing as they attempt to avoid the the question.

Oregon Asks Feds To Kill Protected Bird To Protect Protected Salmon

Extreme environmentalism run amok

(East Oregonian) Oregon officials were successful in getting permission to kill sea lions that feed on protected salmon trying to swim upriver to spawn. Now they want federal approval to shoot a sea bird that eats millions of baby salmon trying to reach the ocean.

In an April 5 letter to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service obtained by The Associated Press, Oregon Wildlife Chief Ron Anglin says harassment has “proved insufficient” in controlling double-crested cormorants, and officials want the option of killing some of the birds.

Wait, back up a second: they killed sea lions to protect the fish? Sea lions that have eaten the fish for tens of thousands of years? Whatever happened to enviro’s loving nature? What happened to Darwinism?

Oregon needs federal approval to start shooting double-crested cormorants because the birds are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

Anglin wrote that the birds are threatening restoration of wild fish protected by the Endangered Species Act, as well as hatchery fish important to sport and commercial fishing.

Birds eating fish? I’m shocked!

If you see one of the *’s, go ahead and check out the blog anyhow, see if there is an update. I cannot update with my Android during the day.

The posts do take a long time, so, if you want to send me your links for Rule 5 babeage or links, use ye olde email in the header bar (remove the NOSPAM part). Preferably, create the html link so I can copy and paste how you want it to read.

Senate Democrats Prove That The GOP War On Women Is A Bunch Of Mule Fritters

We’ve long known that the so-called Republican war on women was simply a contrived issue designed to provide some way in which Democrats, and in particular, (NMP) Obama, something to campaign on this year, since they really do not want to campaign on the vast majority of their records. And this one proves it

(The Hill) Senate Democrats are planning a new ploy to put Mitt Romney and Republicans on the defensive with female voters.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) will bring to the floor in coming weeks legislation to protect women from retaliation by employers if they inquire about salaries paid to male colleagues.

Republicans voted in unison to block the bill, the Paycheck Fairness Act, when it came to the floor in November of 2010.

Democrats say it will be difficult for GOP senators to back out of their opposition, especially because the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has staunchly opposed the legislation.

Mitt Romney will either have to split with Republicans and an important business group or take a position that could further erode his support among women.

“Romney’s going to be on defense on the Paycheck Fairness Act,” said a senior Democratic aide.

Women should take note that Democrats really do not care about paycheck fairness for women, and they do not care about women except in terms of getting them to vote Democrat so that Democrats keep their elected positions. Women are simply a voting group to Democrats, and women should be appalled by the manner in which Democrats patronize and attempt to use them.

This also highlights that Democrats do not understand the way business works, not particularly shocking, since most of them have never worked an honest day in their lives. For one thing, when does retaliation occur when one person asks a supervisor about the salary of another worker? Mostly, this ends with a speech which can be paraphrased as “none of your business.” I’ve said this to many workers many times.

I also had many men who made more than women, who did the exact same sales representative job and had exactly the same responsibilities. Do you know why? There are many reasons, and none were sexist. One reason is that the company often changed what new hires were paid, which meant that new hires, some of which were men, were paid more than women (and men) hired years before (they did, at one point, move those salaries up for all to be equal). Then there is time in service. Men who are there longer would get raises. And, based on their performance, one could get a bigger raise than another. (I also had women who were paid way more than men)

There’s another issue with time in service: unions. Workers get automatic wage increases. Those who have been there longer will make more, regardless of competency. If a man is hired a year before a woman, the man will always make more. So, unions are sexist! Well, not really. This simply highlights how “pay disparity” is not really about sex. Any company that intentionally pays women less due to sex is asking for a lawsuit. But, it rarely ever happens.

The Paycheck Fairness Act creates unnatural business practices. As Forbes pointed out in 2010, what if John asks for a pay raise, which is granted, but Sally doesn’t bother to ask? Under the PFA, it would be illegal to not give Sally a raise, even though she didn’t take the initiative to ask. Also, what if, prior to being hired, John had worked for 4 years in a similar job, and for Sally, this was her first job right our of college? Under current law, John could be given a higher salary than Sally. Under the PFA, that experience could not be considered.

“Fairness” is not necessarily fair. What if Sally has the experience, and John doesn’t? Is Sally happy that John gets the same starting salary? I think we can 100% say “hell no, she’s not happy.” There are many reasons for pay disparity, 99% not based on sex (or race, color, creed, religion). This legislation is being introduced again simply to extend the Democrats pandering and patronization of women. If there is real wage discrimination, there are existing laws to cover that. Interestingly, The Hill includes this

A GOP aide suggested Obama could be hit with criticisms of hypocrisy if Democrats pursue the Paycheck Fairness Act. The aide noted an annual report on White House staff showed female employees earned a median annual salary of $60,000 and male employees earned a median salary of $71,000, a statistic reported by The Washington Free Beacon.

The Free Beacon’s report, however, did not take into account the varying levels of seniority held by female and male White House employees.

Wait, “varying levels of seniority”? Well, under the FPA, they would have to be paid the same as the men. Perhaps Obama should lead the way.

Brainwashed Kid Thinks It’d Be Better Off If Humans Were All Dead

I’m usually loathe to cite World Net Daily, a website I think has gone off the rails since Obama was elected with way too much in terms of conspiracy articles, but, this is on video (via Junk Science)

A 12-year-old girl has responded with the stunning “I wish we didn’t exist” to questions about how she feels about pollution and humanity’s impact on the earth, according to a new video released by Brian Sussman, author of “Eco-Tyranny: How the Left’s Green Agenda will Dismantle America.”

The response came from a 6th-grade girl identified only as Kalie, from Gault Elementary. Sussman met her during Earth Day events in Santa Cruz, Calif., recently, where he traveled to ask “What is the most serious threat facing mankind?”

“Kalie has been green-washed to the point where she readily admits, ‘Sometimes I wish we didn’t exist,’” Sussman reported. (snip)

Sussman asked, “Is Kalie an example of a child on her way to becoming a ‘good environmental citizen?’ Or is this 6th-grader a victim of eco-child abuse? No youngster should be manipulated into thinking that human life is invaluable and so expendable.”

Make sure to read the whole thing.
