Latest Dem Idea On Mother’s Day: Donate To Pro-Abortion Groups

I usually attempt to avoid abortion related news, but, this is just entirely too deranged to ignore (via Weasel Zippers)

(Washington Examiner) Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., built a fundraising pitch for the pro-choice political action group EMILY’s List around the upcoming Mother’s Day holiday.

“This Mother’s Day, I can’t think of a better way to honor all the mothers in the country — past and present — than with a contribution to EMILY’s List,” Gillibrand wrote in the email [all emphasis original]. “They’re the ones working tirelessly to elect the pro-choice Democratic women who are making sure that our freedoms are protected for generations to come.”

Right, because the best way to honor mom is to make sure she isn’t actually a, you know, mom.

Interestingly, a resolution supporting the goals and ideas of Mother’s day, which was introduced while the Democrats controlled the House, languished in committee for over a year before it was finally voted on.

Kansas Legislature Passes Anti-Sharia Law, The Big Meanies

There’s only one problem with the narrative going around the Left-O-Sphere that Kansas is now a bunch of Islamophobes: the actual legislation doesn’t actually mention Sharia law, which makes the USA Today headline rather improper

Kansas lawmakers pass anti-Islamic law measure

A bill designed to prevent Kansas courts or government agencies from making decisions based on Islamic or other foreign legal codes has cleared the state Legislature after a contentious debate about whether the measure upholds American values or appeals to prejudice against Muslims.

The Senate approved the bill Friday on a 33-3 vote. The House had approved it, 120-0, earlier in the week. The measure goes next to Republican Gov. Sam Brownback, who hasn’t said whether he’ll sign or veto the measure.

The measure doesn’t specifically mention Shariah law, which broadly refers to codes within the Islamic legal system. Instead, it says that courts, administrative agencies or state tribunals can’t base rulings on any foreign law or legal system that would not grant the parties the same rights guaranteed by state and U.S. constitutions.

Certainly, much of the intent behind the measure, as many who voted for it stated, is to block the use of Islamic law being used in making legal decisions here in the US. Is this a widespread problem? No. But it has happened.  And we have federal judges and Supreme Court justices who’ve said they would like to use international law to render decisions. This legislation stops the use of any non-American legal system laws from being used to make legal decisions in Kansas.

While much of Sharia law is benign, like far-left liberalism, it creeps up. This is how we end up with laws against lemonade stands and bake sales. The thing about Sharia law is that it is meant to follow the religious precepts of the Koran and is very flexible. It is not a hard-baked legal code. Oh, and then there are the parts about honor killings, divorcing a woman by saying “I divorce you” three times, women needing 4 witness to prove they were raped, women being subservient to men, it being OK to beat a women per the Koran, gays being considered abominations who should be hanged, and so, so much more.

Anyone who thinks this is simply fear of Muslims should go live in a country that practices Sharia law. Especially women. See how you far if caught, say, drinking. I’ve always found it very strange that so many liberals support the concept of Sharia law, when it, in fact, stands against all notions of a fair and equal society.

Warmist Bill Nye: AGW More Important Than Economy And Jobs

Well, why not? If everyone is unemployed and on the public dole, the government has more power

(The Daily Caller) Bill Nye the Science Guy told the Daily Caller on Tuesday that climate change is a bigger problem than the economy or high unemployment.

Bill Nye, who was in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday speaking on behalf of the Planetary Society, said that he is “very concerned about climate change,” adding that, “you can talk about the economy and short-term jobs and so on — but there are much bigger problems.”

If the economy is in the dumps and unemployment is high, there certainly isn’t enough money to deal with “climate change” fixes. Many of those fixes are common sense, such as “green” energy. Of course, the Warmists have destroyed those notions with their idiotic rhetoric and government programs that funnel taxpayer money to companies that are bound to fail.

I will give Nye this, though: he does tend to ride his bike to work rather than take fossil fuel vehicles.

Family Of Romney Prank Target Not Real Happy With Washington Post

In their attempt to attack Romney as a mean person (I don’t remember similar stories about how nasty John Kerry could be in treating people like peons coming from the MSM in 2004), the Washington Post forgot that there are real people affected (via Hot Air headlines thingy)

(ABC News) Betsy Lauber, one of John Lauber’s three sisters, spoke with ABC News Tuesday night regarding the accuracy of the story.

“The family of John Lauber is releasing a statement saying the portrayal of John is factually incorrect and we are aggrieved that he would be used to further a political agenda. There will be no more comments from the family,” she said.

We’re awaiting the in-depth story from the Washington Post on Obama’s days growing up. Perhaps something about his college transcripts. But, then, this is the same media who weren’t particularly interested in a young Obama snorting a Class I drug, cocaine, also referred to as “a felony.”

Was what Romney and his cohorts did wrong? Sure. Was it unusual? Nope. Kids are cruel. I’m sure each of us can dig back into our memories and find an incident we aren’t proud of. As someone who went to boarding school for four years, I could provide many “pranks” that were way, way worse. How about planting a tiny bong in another students room right before a dorm search? The recipient was not a pot smoker, but was a real jerk. And it got her kicked out. How about dead birds and animals in a kids shoes for a week? Lots more from that pool of memory (FYI, I was involved in neither.)

Anyhow, the MSM should remember that there are real people out there who do not want to be a part of the political narrative.

RS McCain wonders about the WaPo’s chance for a Pulitzer with “Bullygate”. Patterico points out all the problems with the story. And, as the Talk Of The Times finds in Obama’s own book, Obama bullied a girl. Actually, according to today’s doctrine, looks like assaulted the girl.

Late afternoon update: in the The Other McCain story linked above, RSM says the WP writer should be fired for journalistic impropriety, and discusses the pitiful sourcing by Horowitz.

Donald Douglas has a whole lot more on the Left’s coordinated attack.

GOP Kills International Climate Funding For Second Year

This leaves the crazy Warmists at Joe Romm’s Soros funded Climate Progress apoplectic, calling the GOP “shortsighted”

The most anti-environmental House of Representatives in history is at it again.

The environment could care less weather (sic) it is hotcoldwetdry. Like it’s been for 4.5 billion years. I talked to Mr. and Mrs. Environment yesterday, and they said Warmists should give it up, and focus on real environmental issues. Oh, and stop using fossil fueled conveyance if they hate the oil created by nature so much.

Yesterday, the House Foreign Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee passed the 2013 foreign operations budget, which for a second year in a row cut entire programs crucial for helping developing countries address climate change impacts and advance on a low-emission economic trajectory.

The conservative belief that cutting international climate investments will solve national budget and debt problems simply makes the problem more expensive for us down the road. These cuts are bad for our national security, risk our international credibility, and endanger our planet and future generations.

Well, liberals are welcome to hold a bake sale or sell lemonade to provide the funds….oops, I forget that liberals in government have done all they could to stop those types of fundraisers around the country. Anyhow, CCCP, er, CP, highlights just what the foreign operations budget does, which brings a smile to my face this morning

  • The World Bank multilateral Climate Investment Funds that the George W. Bush administration established — consisting of the Strategic Climate Fund, the Clean Technology Fund, and the Forest Investment Program — are completely absent. That’s bad financial investment policy. The Clean Technology Fund, which helps to scale up clean energy technology in large-emitting developing countries, leverages around $8 in co-financing from multilateral development banks, governments, and the private sector for every $1 invested. (good. Let the private sector do it if they want. Politicians  use the money to typically pick loser companies that donated to their election chest)
  • USAID’s operating expenses are cut 5 percent below FY 2012 enacted levels. (good)
  • The Global Environment Facility, the main funder of international global warming projects, was cut to $64.7 million. In 2012 President Obama requested $143.7 million for the fund. (perhaps Obama should try to get the Democrat controlled Senate to pass a budget with the requested funds. And perhaps the GEF should spend the money on real environmental issues)

And here’s the best one

Funding for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change — a body of scientists that studies the risk of human-induced climate change — is eliminated.

A body of bureaucrats that provide fake studies while recommending countries tax the bejesus out of their citizens and put the money in the hands of the UN IPCC, because they are totally trust-worthy.

Bummer: “GOP Leaders On Gay Marriage: Sound Of Silence”

The Politico’s CARRIE BUDOFF BROWN and SEUNG MIN KIM have a breathless piece up featuring that headline, minus the “bummer.” They opine

President Barack Obama’s embrace of same-sex marriage was viewed for so long as such a risky move that operatives in both parties expected it to drop like a bomb, handing Republicans a powerful wedge issue in an election year.

Instead, it’s landed like a feather.

Top Republican officeholders went out of their way Thursday to try to shift the conversation back to the economy. The GOP’s House and Senate campaign committees practically ignored it. And prominent Republican strategists are warning the party to steer clear of it.

The early calculation by Republicans is that it’s not worth diverting attention from the economy, which remains Obama’s biggest weakness, and that an intense focus on gay marriage may actually further alienate women and younger voters who were turned off by the GOP’s focus earlier this year on limiting access to birth control.

“This election is all about jobs, the economy, spending and the debt,” said Whit Ayres, a Republican pollster who advised former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman’s presidential campaign. “The president’s decision is not going to change that fundamental foundation. It might make a difference at the margins, especially in culturally conservative states and among cultural conservatives. But it just is not where voters are.”

In other words, the GOP just doesn’t care about the issue. Like Obama, they probably feel like it is a State’s rights issue. And they plan on focusing on the economy. Gay marriage will not take this country off a cliff ala Greece. But, they economic policies of the Obama admin. will.

“Every house I have knocked on, it is about jobs and spending,” Rep. Lee Terry (R-Neb.) said. “And you know what? That’s our goal. And so we want to do what the people are telling us to do … cut spending, get our budget under control and create jobs. That’s it.”

Somehow, I think the article fell apart after they wrote the headline. Perhaps the headline was written by someone else after the story was written, because it’s not so much the sound of silence, but simply that the GOP could care less that Obama cynically changed his position in order to attempt to fire up his base and, more importantly, increase his campaign donations.

Republicans are wise to ignore Obama’s pandering, despite the angst of some social conservatives, as pointed later out in the article. A different Politico article provides this information

Just 22 percent of Americans said that the economy has improved in the past month, down from the 28 percent who said so in February, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll.

Meanwhile, 35 percent predict that the unemployment rate, which has been slowly dropping, will start going back up, up from 30 percent who believed that in February.

Fewer than one in three Americans believe their household’s economic condition will improve in the next year, down from 37 percent just three months ago, while 18 percent believe their finances will deteriorate, up from 11 percent in February.

That’s the fallout from the Obama economy. He can play the “it’s someone and/or something else’s fault” game all day long, yet, at the end of the day, he’s still POTUS, and has been for over three years. His sycophants can Blame Bush, say Obama inherented the economy all they want: at the end of the day, it’s been the Obama policies which have not only failed, but made things worse. The recession officially ended in June 2009, before most of the Obama policies, and especially the Stimulus, kicked in. And here we are with bad economic indicators all around. Mitt Romney and the GOP would be wise to stay out of the social and sidebar issues that Democrats want to drag them in to and focus on issues that really matter.

The Cost Of Globull Warming Legislation

In order to save Gaia from a few degrees of warmth, we must raise the price of living

(Chicago Tribune) Southern California’s biggest water wholesaler says it faces an extra $10 million to $50 million in annual expenses to comply with California’s global warming law.

Those costs will flow down to ratepayers already stressed by steeply rising bills, said the giant Metropolitan Water District, importer of most of the water used in Southern California.

To forestall this increase, Metropolitan is asking for an exemption from the “cap-and-trade” greenhouse emissions requirements of Assembly Bill 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act, said Jeff Kightlinger, Metropolitan’s general manager.

The solutions always seem to be worse than the cause.

“Metropolitan occasionally has to import power to move our water off the Colorado River, and the only way we can get that power is through a connection that moves in the power from Nevada and Arizona,” Kightlinger said.

Kightlinger said Metropolitan doesn’t object to AB 32; it is just objecting to being classified as an electrical utility.

Ever notice how those who Believe never want to be the ones to pay the price? If Metropolitan Believes, they should be willing to Do Their Part and take the monetary hit without passing the cost on.

Meanwhile, that international jet setter James Hansen pens a screed over at the NY Times

GLOBAL warming isn’t a prediction. It is happening. That is why I was so troubled to read a recent interview with President Obama in Rolling Stone in which he said that Canada would exploit the oil in its vast tar sands reserves “regardless of what we do.”

But, not troubled enough to stop taking so many unnecessary fossil fueled flights around the world. Anyhow, Hansen spends lots of time talking about how there should be a “carbon” tax (it’s imprecise to call it that when we are not discussing carbon, bit CO2) and stuff, but, no, it won’t cause any issues. Really. You can trust him. Seriously. Look, a shiny quarter.

Sadly, Jonathan Adler at The Volokh Conspiracy buys into this idiocy. My response in the comments

You’re really off the rails on this one, Jonathan. First, according to Warmist doctrine we aren’t supposed to listen to Hansen, since he doesn’t actually hold a degree in climate science.

2nd, for a guy who is calling for a carbon tax he sure takes quite a few unnecessary fossil fueled flights all around the world. Why isn’t he leading by example?

3rd, time and time again we see that “carbon” taxes simply drive up consumer prices while putting more money in the hands of a central government. People do not want this. Reference the recent Queensland elections.

If you want to live the carbon neutral lifestyle, be my guest. Let us know how that works out.

Steven Goddard has some inconvenient facts for Jet Setting James.

NC Democrat Big-Wig Advocates Violence Against Amendment 1 Supporters

If a Republican had said this, it would have been at the top of the story, instead of being the last two paragraphs

(Raleigh N&O) State party Democrats also used the vote to launch a broader attack on Republicans, particularly on GOP gubernatorial nominee Pat McCrory. Democratic ad man Frank Eaton turned the camera on himself for a post-amendment pep talk.

“This is not the time to stop fighting this war and the hateful, small-minded politicians who brought it to us,” Eaton says in the video posted online. “November – that’s the battle in front of us. Identify the bad guys. Organize against them. Eliminate them at the polls.”

According to Liberal Talking Points, that would be un-civil, inflammatory, and violent rhetoric.

As a sidebar, we also get

Two online petitions began drawing thousands of supporters. One of them demands the immediate repeal of the amendment. By noon, it had generated about 67,000 signatures from across the nation. The goal is 1 million.

Here’s a clue: if you don’t live in NC, it’s none of your business. It passed. If you want to defeat it, get an amendment on the next ballot to repeal it. I bet you lose.
