Team Romney: Whatever McCain Did, Do The Opposite

This story must thrill John McCain and Sarah Palin

(Politico) Mitt Romney and his top aides are building a strategy, partly by design and partly because of circumstance, around what they consider John McCain’s disastrously run campaign in 2008.

The strategy: whatever McCain did, do the opposite.

Many of the current strategy discussions are centered on not falling into the traps McCain did: looking wobbly as a leader and weak on the economy in the final weeks of the campaign. The private discussions include ruling out any vice presidential possibilities who could be seen as even remotely risky or unprepared; wrapping the entire campaign around economic issues, knowing this topic alone will swing undecided voters in the final days; and, slowly but steadily, building up Romney as a safe and competent alternative to President Barack Obama.

McCain, according to Romney advisers, blew it on all three scores. And of the three, the most conscious effort by Romney’s team to do things differently will be in the V.P. selection process. One Republican official familiar with the campaign’s thinking said it will be designed to produce a pick who is safe and, by design, unexciting – a deliberate anti-Palin. The prized pick, said this official: an “incredibly boring white guy.”

Steve Schmidt, a top official on the McCain campaign, acknowledged the need for Romney to do things differently, saying that every major decision in 2008 had been made “through the prism that we were running in the worst political environment any Republican presidential candidate had every faced – it was just horrific.”

“That drove a culture of risk-taking and animated every aspect of the campaign,” Schmidt recalled. “The Romney campaign is in a totally winnable race, and their actions reflect that. They’re more cautious, where we were more elbows-out.”

In reality, there’s only one major thing Team Romney needs to avoid doing from what Team McCain did in 2008, and it’s not avoiding the pick of a dynamic person to be Mitt’s running mate: it’s making the huge, major, stupid pandering gaffe. Despite the talk about how McCain couldn’t have won, how Palin hurt him, the reality was much, much different.

Near the end of September 2008, the electoral map favored McCain over Obama. In the worst projections, it had lots and lots of toss-ups. It was when McCain said he was suspending his campaign and going to Washington to deal with the TARP legislation, then did……nothing to make it better, his campaign imploded.

Any huge pandering gaffes, or simply big gaffes, that Team Obama makes will be glossed over if not defended by the credentialed media. Romney will not have that luxury. What was Obama’s announcement regarding supporting gay marriage other than a huge pandering moment? The media won’t call him on that. They will barely acknowledge anything bad Obama does, and show little journalistic inquisitiveness on just what Obama policies have done. Consider Fast and Furious: most media have ignored it.

As for picking a boring running mate, that’s a good idea this year. McCain needed someone to fire up the conservative base. It worked. Mitt needs this election to be not about enthusiasm, but about vision and competence. He also needs to make a good appearance during the debates. If you listen to the McCain-Obama debates or read the transcripts, McCain tended to win. Watch them, and it was a draw or Obama win. Romney won’t make those same mistakes.

One mistake Romney seems to be attempting to avoid is blowing off “blue” states that he will most likely not win. McCain made a huge mistake in blowing these states off, especially Michigan. McCain put lots of them in play, yet, he didn’t campaign in those states much if at all. Team Romney looks like they want to make Obama defend those states.

Surprise! NJ’s Subsidized Solar Market About To Crash

This is what happens when Government attempts to create an industry where one doesn’t exist, and can’t survive on it’s own

(NJ.com) The market that New Jersey officials set up to subsidize solar energy needs a rescue or there will be disastrous layoffs in the industry, business leaders, politicians and regulators say.

Those in the industry say if the government doesn’t step in to raise subsidy prices paid to solar panel owners, a bust in the market will kill jobs created in the last few years as New Jersey’s solar capacity has more than doubled, putting the state second only to California.

That market works because electric companies must buy solar credits, called SRECs, from panel owners, or produce their own solar power.

Unshockingly, much like with the carbon credit markets, the NJ solar market dropped from $600 each to $100 each. The demand by the consumer was not there, government created an industry, companies see negligible profits for solar, if not losing money, and the product is not in demand. I’ve listened to how the idiotic schemes to place solar panels on homes works when my parents, who live in NJ still, inquired. And now the Government created “industry” needs more government money (read: taxpayer funds) to rescue it. You don’t. You let it collapse. Much like with the Dot-com implosion, the “green” energy sector is not ready.

If they want to dump money into R&D to create viable products for future use, that would be great. Implementing failed ideas now is idiotic.

NC Dem Party Activists Stage “Tea Party” Moment To Keep Disgraced Leader In Office

Last time I checked, the Tea Party (and Conservatives) worked to jettison scum-sucker politicians, not keep them in office

(Raleigh N&O) David Parker, the besieged state Democratic Party chairman, said Saturday that he would remain in his post after the party’s ruling committee voted not to accept his resignation.

In doing so, Parker defied pressure from party leaders from Washington to Raleigh to step aside because of the concern that his handling of sexual harassment accusations by a staffer would damage the party’s efforts in the fall.

In a day filled with high drama and at times chaos and anger, Parker first tendered his resignation in an emotional speech to the state Democratic Executive Committee. He left the hotel to clean out his office in Raleigh, only to return hours later to announce that he would remain as chairman.

The change in heart came after the Executive Committee, a body made up of party activists from across the state, voted 269-203 not to accept his resignation.

But that all blew up Saturday in spectacular fashion, as the Democratic Party activists staged their own “tea party” moment, rebelling against their state and national leaders.

Should anyone be surprised that the Democrat party base would want to keep a sleazy office holder in office? Republicans do all they can to force them out. Democrats keep people like Barney Frank, William “Cold Cash” Jefferson, John Murtha, Charlie Rangle, etc and so on, around. Heck, they’ve even thrown going away parties for some NC Dem party bigwigs, and by going away, I mean getting sent to prison.

Interesting that the party faithful put politics above sexual harassment.

Happy Sunday, and Happy Mother’s Day! Another gorgeous day in America, I hope you got Mom something nice for all that she had to put up with while raising you. Yeah, you remember that one incident. And the other. And then there was…well, best not bring that up. I think this pinup is by Gil Elvgren, couldn’t find it anywhere else.

BTW, does anyone find that Verizon commercial with the crying mother and daughter to be rather misogynistic and an offensive stereotype? Seen it 4 times while writing this post.

What is happening in Ye Olde Blogosphere? The Fine 15

  1. Ace of Spades has some thoughts about Obama’s silly garage stump speech

And don’t forget to check out what I declare to be our War on Women Rule 5 and linky luv posts

Anyone else have a link or hotty-fest going on? Let me know so I can add you to the list. (BTW, since someone asked, the reason I leave links for the previous week up (or you might see a *) is because they are place holders for later in the day or for next weeks. Easier than rewriting all the time. Also, the listing order has to do with how they are added over time, not how good a post is. I just copy and paste from the previous week, then edit. If you see one of the *’s, go ahead and check out the blog anyhow, see if there is an update. I cannot update with my Android during the day.

The posts do take a long time, so, if you want to send me your links for Rule 5 babeage or links, use ye olde email in the header bar (remove the NOSPAM part). Preferably, create the html link so I can copy and paste how you want it to read.

Remember That “Crazy Anti-Gay Lady” The Left Went Nuts About?

Just a few days ago, many lefty blogs featured a crazy lady saying all sorts of crazy things. What they were most upset with were the parts about gays,  such as

“P- E- N- I- S goes into the anus to rupture intestines. The more a man does this the more he’ll be a fatality or a homicider…”

“A huge percent of gay men in school grounds molest boys, partly because they don’t have AIDS yet…”

“Hillary Clinton’s roommate four years in college was a gay woman. To avoid going gay like Clinton did, college students need single rooms and single gender dorms… A college woman is seduced with illegal Rohypnol to go gay.”

Sites like the Huffington Post, Aksarbent, and Towlroad all featured comments and commentary blaming Christians, calling all Christians hateful fundamentalists, all the normal stuff, such as

She is living proof of what fundamental Christianity does to a human being.
It would be funny if it weren’t believed by so many in the United States of Theocracy.

And they were all calling her the crazy anti-gay lady. Many chose to link her, without proof, to the GOP. What was missing? Well, context

A video of a woman testifying against the anti-discrimination ordinance at the Lincoln City Council this week went viral, but her family says she is diagnosed with schizophrenia and shouldn’t be taken seriously.

Jane Svoboda, 52, made several bizarre and disjointed statements during her five minutes of testimony at Monday’s meeting.

The Huffington Post, MSNBC and popular sites such as Gawker and Reddit published the video and stories Friday with little context and Svoboda’s name misspelled. The stories garnered more than 100,000 views.

So, when they were calling her crazy, well, yes, she is actually mentally ill. Think the liberals who tee’d off on her will feel guilty? Aren’t the supposed to be the self-appointed champions of people who can’t fend for themselves?

Svoboda lives at an assisted-living facility in Lincoln and is listed as a protected person, according to court documents. Her brother, Patrick Svoboda of Ogallala, is her conservator because she is incompetent, the documents say.

“To me, it shows how little society really cares about people with mental health issues,” Patrick Svoboda said. “She does have a very tender heart … but anything she says is certifiably schizophrenic … she’s not some crazy conservative.”

It just goes to show that sometimes a bit of context is needed before one runs a story attempting to slur someone and a whole political party.

More On Those Aussie “Death Threat” Emails

Australia Climate Madness has the details

The ANU on Tuesday agreed to release the 11 emails which were the subject of my FOI request, redacted to maintain the privacy of the individuals concerned. LINK

Seven out of the eleven documents contain no threats, and at worst contain mild abuse -these are documents 1, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10 and 11.

Three of the other four are crank emails. Then there is this

One document contains a report of an alleged threat of violence which I discuss below. This was dated June 2010, well outside the six-month scope of the FoI request. By the way, that period was chosen because the news reports stated that the threats had been going on for six months, but had increased in the last few weeks (see later). It states (in full):

I’ll let you head on over to read it, bit it appears to me as if the ANU climate scientist is cutting and pasting a portion of an email from another source, and we don’t have the original email it supposedly came from. And we all know that Warmists never make things up (I’d usually include a raftload of links, however, writing this with my Droid.)

Warmist Claims Men Who Are Climate Realists Are Like Terrorists, Slave Owners, And Pedophiles

Which is strange, because the majority of globull warming cultists are on the left, and they tend to be very soft, if not on the same side, as terrorists, tend to be soft on dealing with pedophiles, and, at least here in the US, it was Democrats who supported slavery (via Real Science and Climate Depot)

(BBC) Because we live in a broadly patriarchal society, we should not be surprised that the culture which brought about the worldwide financial meltdown was overwhelmingly masculine. But consider also that the people who are most vocal in denying human responsibility for the disastrous effects of climate change are mostly male.

The people who control factories of wage slaves in the developing world are almost exclusively men, as are the commanders of terrorist regimes. Leaders who threaten or declare war are mostly men as are those involved in paedophile gangs.

The article itself is mostly about how men are just evil and bad and do bad things and…..hey, perhaps this man, John Bell, might want to address the issue of political correctness in Britain as gangs of Muslim males run around raping girls. Eh, he and other Warmists would probably classify these “Asian” youths as “climate refugees.”

Excitable Bev Perdue Smears North Carolina, Mississippi

Is it any surprise Bev decided that she had no chance in winning re-election?

(Raleigh N&O) Passage of a constitutional amendment defining marriage as solely between a man and a woman makes North Carolina “look like Mississippi,” Gov. Beverly Perdue said Friday.

The chairman of the Mississippi GOP said Perdue was out of touch with voters, while that state’s governor called the comments disappointing and said he would write Perdue a letter telling her so.

“I think it’s wrong for North Carolina, clearly and simply,” the governor said.

“People around the country are watching us and they’re really confused, to have been such a progressive, forward-thinking, economically driven state that invested in education and that stood up for the civil rights of people, including the civil rights marches back in the ’50’s and ’60’s and ’70’s,” Perdue said.

“Folks are saying what in the world is going on in North Carolina. We look like Mississippi.”

Under Bev’s leadership, unemployment in North Carolina has been some of the worst in the country. Her policies led to the GOP taking over majority control of both parts of the General Assembly for the first time in 110 years. Education is so-so. I’m sure the NC Democrat Party isn’t really thrilled that Bev has chosen to insult the 60+% of North Carolinians who voted in favor of Amendment 1.

Remember, Bev is also the one who “joked” about suspending the 2012 elections. Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, Bev.

Related, WRAL reports on the migraine inducing issues Democrats are now facing in North Carolina, where they will be holding their convention.
