The Cost Of Globull Warming Legislation

In order to save Gaia from a few degrees of warmth, we must raise the price of living

(Chicago Tribune) Southern California’s biggest water wholesaler says it faces an extra $10 million to $50 million in annual expenses to comply with California’s global warming law.

Those costs will flow down to ratepayers already stressed by steeply rising bills, said the giant Metropolitan Water District, importer of most of the water used in Southern California.

To forestall this increase, Metropolitan is asking for an exemption from the “cap-and-trade” greenhouse emissions requirements of Assembly Bill 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act, said Jeff Kightlinger, Metropolitan’s general manager.

The solutions always seem to be worse than the cause.

“Metropolitan occasionally has to import power to move our water off the Colorado River, and the only way we can get that power is through a connection that moves in the power from Nevada and Arizona,” Kightlinger said.

Kightlinger said Metropolitan doesn’t object to AB 32; it is just objecting to being classified as an electrical utility.

Ever notice how those who Believe never want to be the ones to pay the price? If Metropolitan Believes, they should be willing to Do Their Part and take the monetary hit without passing the cost on.

Meanwhile, that international jet setter James Hansen pens a screed over at the NY Times

GLOBAL warming isn’t a prediction. It is happening. That is why I was so troubled to read a recent interview with President Obama in Rolling Stone in which he said that Canada would exploit the oil in its vast tar sands reserves “regardless of what we do.”

But, not troubled enough to stop taking so many unnecessary fossil fueled flights around the world. Anyhow, Hansen spends lots of time talking about how there should be a “carbon” tax (it’s imprecise to call it that when we are not discussing carbon, bit CO2) and stuff, but, no, it won’t cause any issues. Really. You can trust him. Seriously. Look, a shiny quarter.

Sadly, Jonathan Adler at The Volokh Conspiracy buys into this idiocy. My response in the comments

You’re really off the rails on this one, Jonathan. First, according to Warmist doctrine we aren’t supposed to listen to Hansen, since he doesn’t actually hold a degree in climate science.

2nd, for a guy who is calling for a carbon tax he sure takes quite a few unnecessary fossil fueled flights all around the world. Why isn’t he leading by example?

3rd, time and time again we see that “carbon” taxes simply drive up consumer prices while putting more money in the hands of a central government. People do not want this. Reference the recent Queensland elections.

If you want to live the carbon neutral lifestyle, be my guest. Let us know how that works out.

wow !!! that sure is a lot of millions !!! what does that work out to per person???? about one dollar I think is close

  2. gitarcarver says:

One again, John exhibits the typical “compassionate liberal.”

Water bills have doubled in CA because of new regulations, John. Is it your belief that people are paying twice as much and getting the same product is a good idea?

Is it really your contention that a water company should be classified as a power company?

Is it your belief that a company that buys electricity in one state and pays all the appropriate taxes and fees in that state, should then have more fees piled onto it?

To give an analogy, when you purchase gas in one state and drive to another on vacation, do you pay the difference in gas taxes between the states?

Finally, you display your ignorance when you say that the costs are only a dollar a person. Companies will have higher rates and they will pass those higher rates onto their customers.

While the amount of money may not be much to you because you have no problems spending other people’s money, the fact of the matter is that this is another play for more money for an unproven cause where the money will not do anything to help, stop or even diminish the issue the tax is supposed to address.

Of course, you will probably trot out the statement “the Navy thinks the ice caps will be gone,” even though that statement is a lie and has been shown to you to be so.

What are the Intrade odd on liberals actually understanding issues?

    Not very good.

  3. A dollar here a dollar there, pretty soon it adds up to real money. If every company is adding a few dollars because of AB32, well, price of living goes up.

  4. gitarcarver says:

“…..well, price of living goes up.”

And then people like John will talk about how we need to raise the minimum wage due to other people’s greed.

  5. And then the businesses go under, and they want to spend a trillion to repave roads and paint bridges that no one can afford to drive on anymore, then want to raise taxes on the job creators.

  6. Lightwave says:

Luckily since the Warmist nonsense will collapse along with the economy as the EU goes down the tubes, “consumption” will be a moot point. Nobody will be able to consume much of anything when Obamee’s feat of adding a trillion bucks every 6 months to the national debt causes the collapse of the dollar through massive inflation.

We’re already seeing it at the pump and at the stores. We’re already paying more for basics.

Global warming will be really funny when nobody can afford to heat their homes in the winter, short of putting dollars to burn in the furnace.

  7. Gumball_Brains says:

short of putting dollars to burn in the furnace.

That’s all they will be good for. Lots of economists are predicting that this will be the last “good” year. Everything will crash and crash hard.

Hey john, when gov’t is forcing every business to charge more and more for everything, how is that making life better?

Commodity prices are already nearly double, and you and the Socialists and Greens want to increase that? How does that help the environment and the little guys?

Ohhhh.. right. without an economy, there is no market. thus, things are not bought, sold, or used. there are no jobs to drive to, no homes to heat or cool, no food to cook or dishes to clean.

    Yeah. Great. Thanks. John!

Global warming is the largest fraud ever perpetrated against a civilization. It was completely manufactured by fools claiming scientific credentials then force fed to a willing media who has lied ever since. Every rule, regulation dealing with this fraud should be ignored and every politician who pushes this nonsense should not only be voted out of office but should be deported from America.
