5 Things To Watch During Ryan/Biden Debate

Tonight’s the night. After Barack Obama’s disastrous (hoorah!) debate performance against Mitt Romney, it’s now Biden’s time to attempt to save face and turn the election back towards Obama. So, 5 things to watch

  1. How many gaffes will Biden make, and will he use interesting dialects?
  2. If Biden has a decent debate, how bad will that make Obama look?
  3. Will Biden remember that today is not Halloween, and minimize the horror stories?
  4. How many times will Biden reference Big Bird?
  5. What seasoning does Paul Ryan have ready after he fillets and field dresses Biden?

Politico has their own 5

  1. Can Biden draw blood?
  2. Can Ryan defend himself and the GOP ticket?
  3. Will Ryan let his feel-your-pain flag fly?
  4. Good Joe v. Bad Biden
  5. How will foreign policy play?

Number 4 is the funniest, since Maggie Haberman and Glenn Thrush write

Biden is flat-out the best debater in the 2012 campaign this side of Mitt Romney — more comfortable and limber at the lectern than his own boss, according to Democrats who get paid to prep candidates.

Except, Biden hasn’t had a debate in four years, and he’s been such a detriment on the campaign trail over the past few months that when he’s actually sent out he’s sent only to venues in the Bluest of Blue areas. There are times when he has been benched for days to avoid there being a Bidenism.

It’s almost a given that Biden will recite some version of “Osama bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive.”

If he does, Ryan will destroy Joe and the O administration spin on Libya and how al Qaeda is spreading.

The last one could be important, if Joe is given easy questions and Ryan is given “when did you stop beating your wife” ones.

And 5 from the Washington Post, which gushes on Biden and “wonders” about Ryan, as well as lowers expectations in case Biden gets beaten like a rented mule. Here’s one of them

The Ryan wonk out: Most of the pre-debate coverage has and will continue to focus on Biden…..But, in our mind, it’s Ryan who has more to prove. Ryan has never — repeat, never — been on a debate stage this (symbolically) big before. And, Ryan’s great strength is his reputation as a numbers and policy geek — both great things in a public servant but less great things in a political debater. If Ryan goes too far down a wonky rabbit hole — we wonder what one of those might look like — he could find himself fighting from behind against the much more experienced Biden.

I’ve always wondered about the notion that the American people aren’t interested in deep explanations, positioned often by the media and pundits as being over the heads of Americans. And then the next day the media tells us that there were no concrete plans. To my mind, it seems that the middle ground voters want details, they want explanations, they want numbers. They’re tired of platitudes and content free talking points. They want to know what politicians are going to do, and how it will affect them. They do not want to be treated like children.

I do think Biden will do better than Obama, at least in terms of energy level and engagement. Expect Ryan to work to frustrate Biden and turn him into Angry Man, which can be done. Also, expect Ryan to have answers ready when Biden trots out the standard talking points, answers most people haven’t heard in response to those same tired Team Obama talking points since the media barely highlights them.

Piers Morgan Gets Tough With DWS On Libya

Yesterday, Congress held a hearing into exactly what happened in Libya, and who knew what and when. Boy Wonder Jay Carney had a few problems answering questions from Jake Tapper and others as to the Obama administration’s response. Debbie Wasserman Schultz had even more problems

(The Blaze) Appearing as a guest on Piers Morgan’s CNN show, DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz did her best to defend the Obama administration’s handling of the deadly 9/11 terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. She also tried to explain away the trove of misinformation that was circulated by the White House in the days following the attack that left U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead.

Morgan began by pointing out the obvious.

“It was very clumsily handled,” he said about the response to the Libya assault. “Was it scandalously handled? Should heads roll?”

After rolling her eyes and shaking her head, Schultz said that President Obama knew Ambassador Stevens personally, which had nothing to do with Morgan’s question whatsoever.

She continued: “What we need to do when the United States has been attacked, when Americans have been killed while serving our country; we don’t need to have Mitt Romney and the Republicans in Congress taking their first instinct, being to take cheap political shots–”

“Let me stop you there,” Morgan interrupted. “Because it’s not about Mitt Romney or what he did…what’s equally inappropriate though is the suggestion that Ambassador Rice and others made public statements which were deliberately misleading in the sense of blaming this video when in fact it has to be known after four or five days that it was much more likely to have been a terrorist attack that had been plan.”

Debbie Downer was shocked, shocked!!!!!!, that someone in the Compliant Media would dare to question the Official Obama Administration Spin that she was trotting out. It didn’t get any better when DWS attempted to move the conversation back to Mitt Romney

“You are flogging the wrong dead horse,” he interjected. “It isn’t about what Mitt Romney or Republicans did. The… really important horse that should be flogged is the behavior and the statements of those who were in positions of responsibility and, we would assume, knowledge, and it’s pretty un-American, pretty un-American, to put out completely false statements before you know the facts, isn’t it?”

“It is not OK for you to be saying that the administration was putting out completely false statements,” Schultz said, a look of disbelief on her face.

Piers Morgan continued to call her on her BS, and was shocked himself that Debbie said that the information the O admin put out wasn’t false. Which it was. A complete load of mule fritters. When they knew it was a terrorist attack within hours. And that there was no “spontaneous protest” which turned into an attack with heavy weapons. And that these “protesters” in Libya, Egypt, and all the areas where “protests” occurred just happened to have tons of al Qaeda and Taliban style flags and headbands ready to go. On September 11.

The Other McCain calls DWS the “Queen of unintentional comedy”

The Lonely Conservative says if anyone knows about false statements, it’d be DWS.

Google news shows no sources other than Twitchy. Nothing at ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, NY Times, Washington Post, LA Times, or Politico at the time of this post. Think a Republican would have gotten away with this?

Meanwhile, Jackass Woods made more unicorn* statements

House Democrats opened Wednesday’s House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform hearing by attacking Republicans for cuts to embassy security funding — cuts that only happened thanks to overwhelming support from House Democrats, including House Oversight Committee Ranking Democratic member Rep. Elijah Cummings. In fact, more House Democrats – 149 of them — voted for the cuts than did House Republicans, of which 147 voted for them.

Pelosi Advises Biden To Focus On “Lady Parts” During Debate

Economy in stagnation, foreign policy melting down, unemployment and underemployment high, etc and so on, and ex-Queen Pelosi is worrying about Lady Parts

(The Hill) House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is urging Vice President Biden to focus on women in Thursday’s night’s upcoming debate with Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), the GOP’s vice-presidential hopeful. “I just would say one word to the Biden people: Women,” Pelosi said in a Tuesday night interview on Current TV.

“Whether you are talking about women’s health care, whether you are talking about Medicare, whether you are talking about . . . equal pay, ending discrimination in the workplace, the rest of it.”

Democrats sure have a sexist and regressive view as to what women care about, eh? In Liberal World women apparently don’t care about starting and running businesses and such.

And what could possibly go wrong with giving Joe Biden this kind of advice?

And how’d he get there? Fossil fueled planes and limos. The same way he left from an auditorium that used vast amounts of power. Which is bad for hotcoldwetdry.

Red Lobster, Olive Garden Testing Program Where Even Fewer Workers Are Full Time Due To ObamaCare

Who would have seen this coming? Legislation has consequences out in the Real World

(Washington Times) The owner of Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants is putting more workers on part-time status in a test aimed at limiting costs from President Obama’s health care law.

Darden Restaurants Inc. declined to give details but said the test is in just four markets across the country. The move entails boosting the number of workers on part-time status, meaning they will work fewer than 30 hours a week.

Under the new health care law, companies with 50 or more workers could be hit with fines if they do not provide basic coverage for full-time workers and their dependents. Starting Jan. 1, 2014, those penalties and requirements could significantly boost labor costs for some companies, particularly in low-wage industries such as retail and hospitality, where most jobs don’t come with health benefits.

Darden, which operates more than 2,000 restaurants in the United States and Canada, employs about 180,000 people. The company says about 75 percent of its employees are part-timers.

One might say that 25% is a small amount, but that still amounts to 45,000 full time workers, and by moving more and more to 30 hours or less the restaurant chains reduce their exposure to what is a burdensome law with tons of regulations, fines, and taxes, all of which will increase costs artificially. Other companies, such as McDonald’s, are looking at the same thing, namely, increasing the number of part timers and reducing the number of full time workers. Which means less money in the pockets of workers thanks to Obama and the Democrats and their absurd legislation which can affect the entire economy, not just the 1/6th health care industry.

And let’s not forget that it will drive up insurance premiums by around 30%.

And less one thinks that Darden Restaurants is some raving right wing group, the CEO and Chairman of the Board, Clarence Otis, Jr., has given $30,800 to DNC Services Corp, ie, the Democratic National Committee, as well as $2,500 each to Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Max Baucus, this election cycle. He also gave $2,500, it should be noted, to Mitch McConnell. And, while he did give $2,300 to John McCain during the 2008 cycle, he gave double that to Obama, and a raft of money to mostly Democrats, including $28,500 to the DNC in 2009.

Obama Refuses To Waive Stafford Act Post Hurricane Issac

Obama has presided over what has been very few natural disasters. There have been few monster tornado outbreaks, a few big floods, and just one hurricane (barely) to make landfall on the continental United States. And how does he treat it? Well, hypocritically, of course

(Daily Caller) President Barack Obama has refused to extend to victims of Hurricane Isaac in Louisiana the same relief he criticized former President George W. Bush for withholding from New Orleans residents in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The move has frustrated state and local politicians and contradicts his own campaign rhetoric about disaster relief from just one election cycle ago.

In a fiery 2007 speech at Hampton University unveiled last week exclusively by The Daily Caller, Obama excoriated the Bush administration for supposedly refusing to waive requirements of the Stafford Act, which requires disaster victims to repay the federal government for emergency assistance, after Katrina struck the Gulf Coast.

“What’s happening down in New Orleans?” Obama shouted during the speech, which was recorded at the Virginia university in June of 2007. “Where’s your dollar? Where’s your Stafford Act Money? Makes no sense! It tells me, the people down in New Orleans, they don’t care about as much!”

And let’s not forget that Obama himself voted against waiving the Stafford Act, just one of 14 Senators to do so, despite that fiery rhetoric.

According to Louisiana Republican Rep. Steve Scalise, the president has responded to the August landfall of Hurricane Isaac, which devastated several parishes in Louisiana, by requiring local governments to provide the maximum allowable 25 percent matching funds to receive their federal aid, instead of the 10 percent match that served as the Bush administration’s guideline in the aftermath of Katrina.

“St. John the Baptist Parish was inundated by Isaac’s storm surge. President Obama visited the parish, held a press conference there and toured the devastation,” Jindal added. “Yet, he is still relying on this parish, and all other impacted parishes, to pick up 25 percent of the cost and refuses to make any adjustment allowed under the Stafford Act.”

I’m not going to get into the notion that the federal government shouldn’t be there to bail out everyone who experiences a natural disaster on the back of taxpayers around the country. But, this does highlight that what Obama preaches is often completely divorced from his actions and policy prescriptions.

And, just to be clear, Obama can’t waive the Stafford Act himself. That requires an act of Congress. But, the administration hasn’t asked for a vote on that for Isaac, and is pushing the maximum amount required. The Bush administration went out of their way to cover virtually all costs for the cleanup in New Orleans.

State Department States There Was No Protest Prior To Benghazi Terrorist Attack

So, after 5+ days of blabbering on about this being part of a “spontaneous protest” over some video critical of Mohammed that no one had seen or known about, followed by weeks of “whoops, our bad, it’s actually X”, we now learn

(Foreign Policy) Prior to the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi late in the evening on Sept. 11, there was no protest outside the compound, a senior State Department official confirmed today, contradicting initial administration statements suggesting that the attack was an opportunistic reaction to unrest caused by an anti-Islam video.

In a conference call with reporters Tuesday, two senior State Department officials gave a detailed accounting of the events that lead to the death of Amb. Chris Stevens and three other Americans. The officials said that prior to the massive attack on the Benghazi compound by dozens of militants carrying heavy weaponry, there was no unrest outside the walls of the compound and no protest that anyone inside the compound was aware of.

In fact, Stevens hosted a series of meetings on the compound throughout the day, ending with a meeting with a Turkish diplomat that began at 7:30 in the evening, and all was quiet in the area.

Many have referred to what’s going on as a “cover up”. Others have said “how can it be a cover up when they slowly release information?” This is a classic case of spoon-feeding the info a tiny dose at a time in order to minimize the impact of what actually happened, which is a political way of covering something up.

Essentially, the Obama administration lied from the get go as to what was going on, possibly to cover up their negligence and horrible conduct.

So, now we can add this to the timeline of what has gone on, as well learning that the State Department denied more security personnel, pulled security personnel out despite being told that Benghazi was, you know, a seriously dangerous place for Westerners, and the security personnel were told to stop freaking asking for help.

$150 Million More Pissed Away On Volt

The Obama administration loans for “green” energy have been such a disaster that we have to wonder if anyone will want to invest for decades. Here’s another example

(Fox News) President Obama touted it in 2010 as evidence “manufacturing jobs are coming back to the United States,” but two years later, a Michigan hybrid battery plant built with $150 million in taxpayer funds is putting workers on furlough before a single battery has been produced.

Workers at the Compact Power manufacturing facilities in Holland, Mich., run by LG Chem, have been placed on rotating furloughs, working only three weeks per month based on lack of demand for lithium-ion cells.

The facility, which was opened in July 2010 with a groundbreaking attended by Obama, has yet to produce a single battery for the Chevrolet Volt, the troubled electric car from General Motors. The plant’s batteries also were intended to be used in Ford’s electric Focus.

The plant is owned by a South Korean company, and, even better, the actual batteries in the Chevy Diego, er, Volt, are made by the same company IN S. Korea.
