Apparently schoolkids won’t know what snow free summers look like (via Steven Goddard)

(The Local) Struggling to know what to do this weekend? Well, summer is officially here so why not head to the ski slopes of the French Pyrénées? Yes, believe it or not a French ski station is reopening its doors to make the most of the unseasonal snow.

A combination of an icy winter and a chilly spring has meant that for the first time ever in the month of June, skiers will have the option of heading to the pistes in the French Pyrénées, French TV TF1 reported on Wednesday.

After recent cold weather, bosses at the ski station Porte Puymorens in the Pyrénées-Orientales region of the mountain range that divides France from Spain have taken the exceptional step to re-open the slopes this weekend after they had closed them at the end of the season in April. (snip)

Those who are not cheered by the prospect of skiing in June should not hold out for any real summer weather just yet, although there is hope the sun might make an appearance in France in July and August.

All because someone refused to stop using their icemaker. Tsk, tsk.

IRS Agents State That Orders Came From D.C.

And are upset that they are being blamed for doing what they were told to do

(UK Daily Mail) Interviews with IRS employees have established that the Washington, D.C. headquarters of the Internal Revenue Service was engaged in targeting tea party groups and other conservative organizations for unfair levels of scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status.

Rep. Darrel lssa, chairman of powerful House Committee of Oversight and Government Reform, made that startling announcement on CNN Sunday morning.

‘As late as last week,’ he said, ‘the [Obama] administration was still trying to say the [IRS targeting scandal] was from a few rogue agents in Cincinnati, when in fact the indication is that they were directly being ordered from Washington.’

How’d he come up with that statement?

A committee spokesman sent MailOnline partial transcripts of two interviews with unnamed IRS workers about the agency’s actions in early 2010, on whose testimony Issa based his bombshell statement.

One of those interviewees said it was ‘impossible’ for a few IRS agents to have orchestrated such widespread partisan targeting on their own.

‘Did [your supervisor] give you any indication of the need for the search [for tea party groups], any more context?’ one IRS witness was asked in a closed-door interview.

‘He told me that Washington, D.C., wanted some cases,’ came the reply.

The employee, who said he or she was evaluating 40 such applications for tax-exempt status from conservative organizations at the time, said ‘some went to Washington. D.C. … I sent seven.’

Cases were being requested from D.C.

Asked whether the problem ‘was originated in and contained in the Cincinnati office,’ as some Obama administration officials in Washington have claimed, the agent replied that ‘I still hear people saying we were low level employees, so we were lower than dirt, according to people in D.C. So, take it for what it is.’

‘They were basically throwing us underneath the bus.’

‘[W]e didn’t do anything wrong,’ the agent said, according to the partial transcript. ‘We followed directions based on other people telling us what to do.’

Sadly, these employees didn’t blow the whistle back when this started, but, then, most often low level employees are concerned about retaliation when they blow the whistle on upper levels, as well as worrying that no one at the upper levels will listen. The question for now is “will they blow the lid off this scandal?”

Greenpeace Warmist: Hey, All You Warmists Shouldn’t Feel Guilty About Being Complete Hypocrites

Over the years I and other Climate Realists have consistently pointed out that Warmists rarely practice what they preach, and, at best, only take token measures within their own lives, such as replacing a bulb or two with CFLs. When you read my posts on “climate change” or comments around the web that theme will be included more often than not. Warmists are often very upset with me for calling out their blatant hypocrisy. Fortunately, James Turner, the head of communications for Greenpeace International’s Save the Arctic Campaign, is here to say “don’t feel guilty”

A friend recently returned from a camping trip in the Sierra Nevada. His eyes shone as he described the opalescent sky, the vitality of wildlife in spring and the fun he’d had playing with his two young daughters during the mellow evenings. It had been a really good trip, an experience to treasure, he said.

I casually asked how long it took to get there. “Oh, it wasn’t too bad,” he said, and then caught himself, as if he’d said something wrong. “But we took the minivan this time, which I suppose means we weren’t so in tune with nature after all.”

I felt slightly hurt. I am an environmentalist — I work for Greenpeace. Did he think that makes me some moral arbiter of fun, sternly passing judgment on those who ignore the perils of climate change to enjoy a weekend in the mountains?

Of course, it wasn’t really about me. What my friend expressed was climate guilt, a feeling that many of us who care about environmental issues experience every day. I am not immune. We feel guilty about driving cars and watching TV and turning on lights, as if that makes us personally responsible for this gigantic threat that looms over us.

But, you know who’s at fault for making Warmists feel guilty for being hypocrites?

Whether this “guilt barrier” is deliberately constructed or just innate to our psyches, it’s being exploited by the fossil fuel cartel. Its members are content to have us feel guilty, particularly if it contributes to a sense of helplessness. Where once companies such as Exxon Mobil denied that their products were causing dangerous levels of pollution, now they claim it is impossible to switch from them. “Look at your life,” this thinking goes. “You’re up to your neck in it. You really want us to turn off the tap?”

See? It’s the fault of Big Oil for pointing out that Warmists are hypocrites (hey, remember the 2005 UN IPCC in the exotic vacation spot of Bali, where so many private jets brought that they had to deadhead (fly without passengers) them to other islands to park them?), apparently hurting Warmist feelings and making them feel bad.

This accusation is based on a false premise: that all alternatives are equally accessible to consumers, and we’re all happily choosing fossil fuels. That’s simply not true, and nowhere is this more evident than in the case of the oil industry’s greatest threat: the electric car.

Despite encouraging news that the Toyota Prius has become the No. 1 selling car in California, fully electric vehicles remain out of financial reach for all but the most affluent families. And like most of America, our state lacks the charging infrastructure to support many such cars anyway. More barriers to entry.

Hey, you could ride a bike. Live close to work. Walk. Take the bus. If you really believe that fossil fuels are evil, you’d find a way.

Whatever my friend might personally think about climate change and air pollution, he has to stick to a budget that will support his whole family. Nor will he risk stranding them all along I-5. His “choice” of a minivan is in fact no choice at all. He’s left feeling disempowered, implicated and hypocritical. Any desire to act is supplanted by resignation. But whose fault is it?

Well, if he really believes, he wouldn’t take that fossil fueled trip in the first place. He could, at least, purchase a small, fuel efficient car, or even take the bus. And, yeah, Mr. Turner continues to blame Big Oil in the next paragraph.

Maybe it’s time for us to remove the guilt. Yes, I drive a car that runs on gasoline. I fly for work when necessary and occasionally for vacation. But doing these things is not the same as admitting they are inevitable. Five years ago I flew more; now I use Skype. Bike lanes have been newly painted in my neighborhood, so I cycle to the store. In a couple of years, electric cars might come into my price range. In the meantime, I refuse to feel guilty.

In the battle against climate change, we should not be waging guilt trips on one another. Rather, we should take the fight to those who use our sense of personal responsibility against us. Climate change is a problem, and we must fix it. But it’s certainly not our fault.

See? It’s that easy, Warmists. It’s Someone Else’s fault, so, buck up little campers, don’t feel guilty…do any actually feel guilty? I’ve yet to run across any Warmist who feels guilty about being a climahypocrite. They also seem to have lots of excuses handy as to why they barely take even token measures within their own lives. Anyhow, I really find amusement in the notion that Warmists are supposed to fight back against those who attempt to make them feel guilty, because that’s apparently more important than practicing what they preach.

Gang Of 8 Amnesty Bill Runs Into Problems With Back Taxes, Border Security

Quick, when you think of the Marco Rubio radio commercials, constantly broadcast on talk radio and TV, does the phrase “pay back taxes” come to mind? It shouldn’t, because Amnestyites have dropped any sort of tough posture from the bill, and Rubio has moderated his language just to say “pay taxes”

(Politico) The question of whether lawmakers should force immigrants to ante up what they owe Uncle Sam on any money they were paid off the books might seem easy at first.

After all, it was one of the Gang of Eight’s main talking points when it unveiled the immigration blueprint in January. Sponsors vowed that their proposal would include a back tax requirement to ward off critics’ claims that their bill would be “amnesty.” Citizenship would come with a price, they said.

But the gang has all but dropped that talking point. The immigration legislation currently moving through the Senate includes a scaled-back provision that relies almost entirely on immigrants coming forward to the Internal Revenue Service voluntarily. Critics call it “toothless.”

It is mostly toothless. The language of the bill leaves all the power of making the rules to collect from those who feel like it in the hands of the IRS. Usually, one can count on the IRS being the only agency that works really hard to collect, but, as we’ve seen, they’ve become pretty darn prone to hyper-partisan political manipulation.

Schumer also argued that a strong back tax requirement could deter immigrants from coming out of the shadows but said that the group would try to come up with some sort of compromise on the floor.

Yeah, the “compromise” was to leave it up to the Illegals, but somehow The Politico puts the burden of not getting something done on the Republicans if they dare to push for tougher measures. Then there’s the border security part

The Gang of Eight’s hopes for a Senate supermajority is running into the GOP’s push for a dramatic crackdown on border security — testing the limits of the bipartisan coalition that’s propelling the bill through Congress.

With Congress back this week to work on the measure, Senate negotiators want to pick up as many as two dozen Republican votes in a show of force that compels the House to act. But the result has to be much stricter than the current version of the bill to give it any hope of passing there either. They’ve got to do it without alienating the vast majority of Senate Democrats who like the bill as it is.

And whatever happens, it has to keep Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) satisfied.

Rubio, a key member of the Gang of Eight, is shopping around a proposal to have Congress — not the Department of Homeland Security — write the border control strategy that would be a prerequisite for most of the other elements of reform. Rubio hasn’t yet landed on specific parameters, but, arguing that Americans don’t trust their government to get it right, Rubio wants lawmakers to craft the plan at the outset, rather than leave the details up to the Obama administration.

Sorry, Marco, but having Congress write the border control strategy isn’t much better than having DHS write it….wait, you missed that border security has been vastly watered down, too?

Under the bill passed by the Judiciary Committee, unauthorized immigrants could not transition into a probationary legal status until DHS has laid out a strategy for the Southern border. And most of those immigrants would not be allowed to apply for green cards until several security benchmarks — such as implementation of a system for employers to check workers’ immigration status and an electronic exit system at major airports and ports of entry — are met over the next decade.

Remember when the border had to be secure? Rubio told and tells us this time and again, ad nauseum. Now they get probabtionary status just by DHS coming up with a strategy. What if the strategy is “hey, it’s good! Things are fine.”? The security measures will surely be weakened further, or be no more than token measures. Others will be ignored. All in the name of creating more Democrat voters quickly.

There are also far-left activist groups that see citizenship for illegal immigrants as a “civil right” and will push to water down border security and enforcement measures that are critical to reform’s long-term success. These groups view immigration reform as something that should quickly legalize as many people as possible. That idea—which is manifest throughout the current administration—has done more to poison the well of immigration reform than anything that restrictionist groups could ever manage on their own.

Well, the Leftists in the Senate have already watered it down. Many Republicans on the Gang Of 8 have helped. Rubio is the face of this crap-sandwich. Now the GOP will be blamed and demonized for attempting to strengthen it.

Is It CFCs, Not CO2, That Caused This Warm Period?

Obviously, I’m not a scientist. I’ve never claimed to be. But, that’s OK, because this whole “climate change” issue is mostly a political one, not a scientific one. I can get into the science, but I do not go as deep as, say, Anthony Watts or Dr. Roy Spencer. So, I’ve been trying to work my way through the new study that says it is CFCs that have driven warming, not CO2

(Daily Caller) Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) — not carbon emissions — are the real culprit behind global warming, claims a new study out of the University of Waterloo.

“Conventional thinking says that the emission of human-made non-CFC gases such as carbon dioxide has mainly contributed to global warming. But we have observed data going back to the Industrial Revolution that convincingly shows that conventional understanding is wrong,” said Qing-Bin Lu, a science professor at the University of Waterloo and author of the study.

“In fact, the data shows that CFCs conspiring with cosmic rays caused both the polar ozone hole and global warming,” Lu said.

The findings are based on in-depth statistical analyses of observed data from 1850 up to the present time, Professor Lu’s cosmic-ray-driven electron-reaction (CRE) theory of ozone depletion and his previous research into Antarctic ozone depletion and global surface temperatures.

Now, over at Climate Depot, Marc Morano is linking to an article by The NO CARBON Tax blog saying the game is up, CO2 is innocent. Well, yeah, it is mostly innocent. But, let’s consider: the study is only discussing CFCs and warming since the 1970’s. What about the warming before than? Of course, Warmists themselves like to limit themselves to only the warming since the late 1970’s, as well (except when it suits their discourse). But, then the paper flips around discussing warming since 1850 (the end of the Little Ice Age) and 1950 and other dates. Which is it?

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are to blame for global warming since the 1970s and not carbon dioxide, according to new research from the University of Waterloo published in the International Journal of Modern Physics B this week.

That’s the first paragraph of the Waterloo News article (can’t get into the actual study, not a member). So, which is it? The study seems to be saying that something caused the warming since 1850, but that CFCs controlled the temperature since the late 1970’s,

By proving the link between CFCs, ozone depletion and temperature changes in the Antarctic, Professor Lu was able to draw almost perfect correlation between rising global surface temperatures and CFCs in the atmosphere.

Certainly, CFCs are a much more potent GHG than CO2, and ozone depletion was a danger.

But, what of the explosion of CFC usage from the late 1800’s on? They were heavily used in devices to extinguish fires starting in the late 1880’s on, spreading to many other uses, such as with air conditioning, refrigerators, medicinal aerosols, blowing agents, solvents, cleaners, and degreasing agents, among others. The use of CFCs explode in the mid-1900’s, yet the Earth saw flat or reducing temperatures from the 1940’s through late 1970’s. Was it simply a case of there not being enough in the atmosphere to make a difference? Perhaps the study discusses this. It’s not in the abstract.

Many CFCs have been banned from usage since the late 1970’s, with the big bans starting worldwide in the mid to late 1990’s, so there is some correlation between CFC usage and global temperatures, and could certainly explain warmer temps in many 1st World nations, such as the US. But, it does not track perfectly, and needs more study. Is it causality or anecdotal? Is it coincidental or the anthropogenic precipitor? The article discusses correlation. But, is it definitive proof? I’ll be the first to tell you that not all anthropogenic causes can be discounted, as I’ve said time and again.

Finally, it is interesting that the authors do not immediately discount the effects of the Sun and solar wind, including the natural properties and saying that they are part of the warming equation, and not just as how they effect the CFCs.

I finished Clone Hunter by Victor Methos, excellent, excellent book. 4 1/2 Pirate Flags out of 5. Hoping there will be a follow up.

Deep into Under Foot (Outside Context Problem) by Christopher Nuttall, the 2nd book in the series. I’m finding it a bit better than the first, where the United States is under the foot of the alien invaders and having to deal with all sorts of Quislings. Not even close to being done, it’s 489 pages.

I’ve also been slowly reading The Mad, Mad, Mad World Of Climatism. I’ll provide a write up once I finally finish, but, let me say that this should be the one book that every Warmist, and those on the fences, should read. Heck, even if you do not buy into “climate change”, you should read it. The facts and figures, along with the history, of “climate change” is put in an excellent format that anyone can easily understand.
