Warmists Waiting For That Climate Change Tipping Point

But not the one you’re thinking of

(Concord Monitor) One of these days, the tipping point will be reached. No, not the tipping point that leads to a continued warming of the globe. That one, unfortunately, is probably behind us. The even more elusive tipping point is the action, event or increased collective concern that finally prompts Americans to make combatting climate change a national goal akin to winning a world war.

Going to be tough to have a tipping point when a) no statistically significant warming in 17 years and b) Warmists refuse to practice what they preach

Hurricane Katrina didn’t do it, and neither have Hurricanes Sandy and Irene. So the notion that a slim book and a barnstorming state senator from Iowa will spur the nation to action seems far-fetched. But Sen. Rob Hogg’s book, America’s Climate Century, and his talks across the state this week should move the needle in the right direction.

Thanks for that science, since neither Sandy nor Irene were hurricanes when they made landfall. As for Hogg, it seems like he’s taking fossil fueled trips to push a book saying fossil fuels are evil.

Preventing an even bigger temperature increase will require U.S. leadership, which in turn, require bipartisan support. That support has been wanting among Republicans, but that too may be changing. Earlier this month four former heads of the Environmental Protection Agency, William Ruckelshaus, Lee Thomas, William Reilly and Christine Todd Whitman, authored a joint column in The New York Times. It was called “ A Republican Case for Climate Action.” They wrote, “The only uncertainty about our warming world is how bad the changes will get, and how soon. What is most clear is that there is no time to waste.”

And they were roundly ignored, because they are Republican Progressives pushing un-scientific doctrine which leads to more Big Government and fascistic control.

The tipping point that will result in American leadership on climate change is approaching. Our hope is that it is no more than one election away.

We can start by all Warmists voluntarily making their lives “carbon neutral”. The editorial talks about everyone doing what they can to reduce their energy usage. That’s not a bad idea from an economic point of view. I do. But there is so much more Warmists can do in their own lives, like giving up fossil fueled travel. They won’t.

Detroit Apparently Auditioning For “Life After People”

I forget what website I was on a couple days ago that was discussing some other issue with Detroit, made I made the comment to the effect that Detroit is the model for that History Channel TV series “Life After People”. I might have been closer to the truth

(Bloomberg) As many as 50,000 stray dogs roam the streets and vacant homes of bankrupt Detroit, replacing residents, menacing humans who remain and overwhelming the city’s ability to find them homes or peaceful deaths.

Dens of as many as 20 canines have been found in boarded-up homes in the community of about 700,000 that once pulsed with 1.8 million people. One officer in the Police Department’s skeleton animal-control unit recalled a pack splashing away in a basement that flooded when thieves ripped out water pipes.

“The dogs were having a pool party,” said Lapez Moore, 30. “We went in and fished them out.”

Packs of wild dogs? Check. Infrastructure falling apart? Check. Nature taking over? Check. Though some people still live there. Mostly democrats waiting for Someone, probably Government, to come save them.

Obama Takes Neverending Campaign To Young Voters For His Failed Economic Policies

Rather than sitting down with Congress, the duly elected government branch that passes laws (he isn’t even sitting down with people in his own Party), Obama’s taking the show on the road

(The Hill) President Obama begins a two-day college bus tour Thursday hoping to rally support for economic policies that have failed to gain traction with the GOP Congress or voters.

Obama will visit four college towns in an effort to win over young voters who polls suggest have soured on the president.

He’ll travel to state universities in the New York college towns of Buffalo, Syracuse and Binghamton, where he’ll host a town hall discussion.

You can bet this will be a speaking tour, not a listening tour, because Obama surely doesn’t want inconvenient questions to come up from these college students, who are being left with tons of student loan debt that can’t be paid off with the types of jobs available in the Obameconomy, namely, low wage part time jobs. But this tour isn’t really about economic policies: it’s about Obama’s flagging approval numbers and patronizing college kids

Obama is expected to tout policies that could appeal to students and their parents during the bus tour, something the White House hopes will turn around his poll numbers.

The effort is also designed to boost Obama ahead of economic fights with Congress in the fall on government spending and the debt ceiling. (snip)

In an email to supporters, Obama said he would offer a new plan “to make college more affordable, tackle rising costs, and improve value for students and their families.”

Why make college more affordable when their are few jobs out there?

“More campaigning isn’t going to change the fact that the Obama presidency and Democratic policies have made life harder for young Americans,” Reince Priebus said, according to The Journal News.

This is what Obama knows. It’s what he’s good at. Sound fiscal policy and actually fixing economic problems? SCOAMF.

Mega-Climahypocrite Al Gore Compares Climate Realists To Anti Abolitionists, Racists, Homophobes, And Alcoholic Families

Al Gore sat down for an interview with the Washington Post’s Ezra Klein, and provides some real howlers. Here’s the part relevant to the headline (via Watts Up With That?)

EK: Give me the optimistic scenario on what happens next. If all goes well, what do the next few years look like on this issue?

AG: Well, I think the most important part of it is winning the conversation. I remember as a boy when the conversation on civil rights was won in the South. I remember a time when one of my friends made a racist joke and another said, hey man, we don’t go for that anymore. The same thing happened on apartheid. The same thing happened on the nuclear arms race with the freeze movement. The same thing happened in an earlier era with abolition. A few months ago, I saw an article about two gay men standing in line for pizza and some homophobe made an ugly comment about them holding hands and everyone else in line told them to shut up. We’re winning that conversation.

The conversation on global warming has been stalled because a shrinking group of denialists fly into a rage when it’s mentioned. It’s like a family with an alcoholic father who flies into a rage every time a subject is mentioned and so everybody avoids the elephant in the room to keep the peace. But the political climate is changing. Something like Chris Hayes’s excellent documentary on climate change wouldn’t have made it on TV a few years ago. And as I said, many Republicans who’re still timid on the issue are now openly embarrassed about the extreme deniers. The deniers are being hit politically. They’re being subjected to ridicule, which stings. The polling is going back up in favor of doing something on this issue. The ability of the raging deniers to stop progress is waning every single day.

Al Gore should know about racists and anti-abolitionists, considering his father and his background. Nor is this the first time Gore has called Climate Realists racists. Much like with other subjects, the far Left uses such pejoratives in order to attempt to shut down debate, a debate that Gore and his little minions are losing.

Notice how much Gore talks about politics: that’s because this is a political issue, not a scientific. If it was science, perhaps Gore and his minions, along with all the people involved in the UN IPCC and “climate” research would practice what they preach. But Gore doesn’t want that, he wants cap-and-trade, because he makes a boatload of money off them. And he wants these policies implemented further, because he stands to make money off them, and, unstated, probably because so many carbon trading markets are collapsing, so he needs more that have higher prices.

Al Gore: We have already crossed the 400 parts per million mark. We crossed it earlier this year. The question now is how high it will go before we begin bending the curve. But in spite of the continued released of 90 million tons of global warming pollution every day into the atmosphere, as if it’s an open sewer, we are now seeing the approach of a global political tipping point.

Actually, no, we didn’t cross 400ppm. CO2 is not pollution. And Gore releases way more than his “fair share”, rather than reducing his own “carbon footprint”.

The appearance of more extreme and more frequent weather events has had a very profound impact on public opinion in countries throughout the world. You mentioned my movie back in the day. The single most common criticism from skeptics when the film came out focused on the animation showing ocean water flowing into the World Trade Center memorial site. Skeptics called that demagogic and absurd and irresponsible. It happened last October 29th, years ahead of schedule, and the impact of that and many, many other similar events here and around the world has really begun to create a profound shift.

The extreme weather meme has already been debunked. Sandy was not the first big storm to hit the Tri-state area, nor will it be the last.

If you look at superstorm Sandy on October 29th, the ocean water east of New Jersey was nine degrees fahrenheit above average. That’s what put so much more energy into that storm. That’s what put so much more water vapor into that storm. Would there be a storm anyway? Maybe so. Would there be hurricanes and floods and droughts without man-made global warming? Of course. But they’re stronger now. The extreme events are more extreme. The hurricane scale used to be 1-5 and now they’re adding a 6. The fingerprint of man-made global warming is all over these storms and extreme weather events.

The US hasn’t been hit with a major hurricane since October 24 2005, the longest period on record. Sandy was not a hurricane when it made landfall, and there has only been one landfalling hurricane since 2008, and calling Isaac a hurricane is charitable. No one is adding a 6 to the hurricane scale. What put the energy into Sandy was a cold front. Tornado activity is at an all time low. The seas aren’t rising above average. Drought and flooding are not abnormal. Nothing is stronger.

The man is a hysteric. I used to appreciate his calm, reasoned voice, particularly on real environmental issues, to the point that I voted for him in 2000. He’s off the edge of the map at this point.

Kansas And Arizona Sue To Allow Proof Of US Citizenship To Vote

Oh yes they did

(Fox News) Kansas and Arizona filed a lawsuit jointly against the federal government Wednesday over requirements needed to register to vote.

The lawsuit demands that the U.S. Elections Assistance Commission modify the federal voter registration form in both states so it would allow for proof of citizenship when people sign up to vote.

The federal form doesn’t require proof of citizenship. It only requires prospective voters to declare that they are citizens.

“A mere oath without concrete evidence of citizenship, as allowed for by the current version of the Federal Form, does not suffice to effectuate the State laws of Plaintiffs or enable Plaintiffs to obtain information Plaintiffs deem necessary to assess the eligibility of voter registration applicants and to enforce their voter qualifications,” the lawsuit reads.

This goes back to the recent 7-2 SCOTUS decision which knocked down State requirements to require proof of citizenship. Talking Points Memo notes that Justice Scalia invited Arizona to sue after the decision

The issue involves the 1993 National Voter Registration Act, also known as the “motor voter” law, which requires states to let people register to vote simply by attesting they are citizens, when renewing their driver’s license or applying for social services. A 2004 law adopted by the voters in Arizona added the requirement that people registering to vote also provide proof of citizenship. The Supreme Court struck down that law earlier this year, concluding that it is trumped by the motor voter law. Arizona, the court ruled, could not add new requirements to the form prescribed by the federal law.

But during oral arguments in March, Scalia expressed his bafflement that Arizona did not launch a broader assault on the constitutionality of the NVRA form, written by the Election Assistance Commission.

Here’s what the Constitution says, Article I Section 4

The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators.

Liberals take the path that States can never go further than what Federal law states, despite the 9th and 10th Amendments. This is what got Arizona sued over their illegal immigration laws. Stephen Kruiser notes

Put bluntly, Arizona experiences problems with illegal immigrants from Mexico on a far greater scale than any other state, even the other border states. Lawmakers there aren’t attempting to be draconian when they create legislation that requires stricter proof of citizenship, they are trying to get a grip on a problem that has been wreaking havoc in the state for almost half a century. This means they have even more incentive to require voter ID.

For whatever reason, Democrats/Liberals have taken up the cause that people from all over the world should simply be able to come to America illegally, and once here should be given all the rights and privileges, including the ability to vote, of American citizens. Oh, right, the reason is they want more Democrat voters.

Of course, the ACLU is upset by this, forgetting that the “A” stands for “American”. For some reason they don’t want to protect the integrity of the American citizen right to vote and elect without foreign influence.

Reuters Delves Into The “Heat Is Hiding In The Deep Oceans” Meme

And provides lots and lots of Warmist approved talking points that skirt science and history

(Reuters) The world’s oceans have absorbed more than 90 percent of global warming since the mid-20th century, making accurate measurements of deep ocean temperatures vital to predicting how much global temperatures and sea levels are going to rise.

In 1999, a group of 30 countries launched the Argo program as the first global, subsurface ocean observing system.

It will improve on the earlier patchwork of observations dating as far back as Britain’s HMS Challenger in 1873, which dropped a weighted thermometer overboard on a hemp line 8 millimeters [app. 1/3 of an inch] thick.

The Argo floats are rather more sophisticated with an inflatable chamber and a pump that changes the buoyancy of the float by changing its volume. It can sink from the surface to 2,000 meters [6560 feet] depth and then resurface, measuring temperatures and salinity as it goes.

The data so far confirm a warming trend in the oceans over the past century.

Significantly, two recent publications suggest that the deep oceans have warmed particularly quickly in the past decade.

Here’s the question: do we have tons and tons of data to support this going back thousands of years that covers the majority of the oceans? Also, if the upper oceans aren’t warming that much, how is it that the heat just appears in the deep oceans? And, couldn’t any heat have more to do with natural conditions, such as underwater vulcanism? But, it really comes back to not having long term data, which wouldn’t matter to Warmists in the first place, because they would simply adjust/falsify/hide data that doesn’t conform.

According to those surface temperatures, 11 of the 12 hottest years in the past 150 have been since 2000, NASA data show, illustrating a clear warming trend.

First, that would be expected during a natural warm period. Second, much of the world has seen very cold conditions 4 of the last 5 years (which Warmists blame on man-induced climate change, of course). Third, the 30’s were warmer. Fourth, the entire point of the one sided opinion piece from Reuters writer Gerard Wynn is to continue the un-scientific meme that the warming, missing for 17 years, is hiding in the deep oceans, the better to continue pushing for more and more Progressivism and bigger government.

Trenberth: IPCC To Change A Lot Based On Government Input

Don’t forget, this is supposed to be about Science (via Tom Nelson)

(Boulder Daily Camera) [Gerald Meehl, a senior scientist at NCAR] “But how these things get portrayed, and the wording used to describe them, may change, to try to make it more clear. The caveat is that that’s not the final version.”

That was seconded by Trenberth — who has attended the IPCC sessions in the past but won’t be doing so this year.

“It’s going to change a lot,” he said. “How it gets said, and the wording, and what gets emphasized and what gets dismissed is decided by the government representatives. And there is usually a war of sorts that goes on in that room, between governments who are determined to have a clear and accurate report, and some governments who are trying to muddy the language and downgrade the language.

“For the 1990, ’95 and 2001 reports, the main countries that were working to obfuscate and diminish the language were the OPEC countries, led by Saudi Arabia,” Trenberth said. “And the 2007 report, the country with a strong delegation and strong objections was China, backed up by Saudi Arabia.

“There is supposed to be unanimous consensus. And that is very hard to achieve.”

The struggle to reach consensus, Trenberth said, “is an interesting process, but it’s a brutal process. The chair has to have an amazingly robust bladder.”

So, politics, not science. Thanks for the confirmation.

Climate Change Causes Sea Level To Fall in 2010 And 2011

No, really

(UK Register) Global warming and climate change are usually thought to mean that world sea levels will rise, perhaps disastrously. But according to US government boffins, in recent times (2010 and 2011, to be precise) phenomena driven by human carbon emissions have actually caused world sea levels to fall.

The seas have, of course, been rising steadily as the climate has changed for thousands of years, ever since the end of the last ice age. During the 20th century, according to estimates mostly from erratic tide gauges, sea levels rose by around 1.7mm a year. Since the early 1990s, satellites have also been used to measure sea levels, and by contrast have suggested a steady unchanging rise of about 3mm annually – that is, until 2010.

According to a statement issued yesterday by the US National Science Foundation:

For an 18-month period beginning in 2010, the oceans mysteriously dropped by about seven millimeters.

And what do they blame this on? The Australian flooding, which like the drought that was supposed to go on forever because of Hotcoldwetdry, is blamed partly/mostly/solely on Mankind. The NSF several weather events came together to create the conditions for such heavy rains, which were then soaked up by the Aussie continent without heading right back to the seas. Because Australia is big. Really big.

(NSF) Fasullo believes there may have been a similar event in 1973-74, which was another time of record flooding.

But modern observing instruments did not exist then, making it impossible to determine what took place in the atmosphere and whether it affected sea level rise.

Wait, weren’t scientists and the media worried about a coming ice age at that time? Wasn’t that the consensus?

Essentially, natural forces will do what natural forces do, and all Mankind can do is adapt to it and deal with it.
