The hell you say! This is the NY Times discussing the (bat guano crazy) report of the next tipping point (which I mentioned yesterday)
The research comes with caveats. It is based on climate models, huge computer programs that attempt to reproduce the physics of the climate system and forecast the future response to greenhouse gases. Though they are the best tools available, these models contain acknowledged problems, and no one is sure how accurate they will prove to be at peering many decades ahead.

If every news story written about climate change since the 1980s had contained that single paragraph, we’d have made smarter decisions over the past quarter century. We’d have had billions more dollars available to spend on sensible measures – such as saving the hundreds of thousands of African kids who still perish annually from malaria.
She also provides this handy dandy warning label, which should be slapped on every Warmist article, just like with packs of cigarettes
That part about peering ahead is also pretty darned important, because the vast majority of models failed to predict the current “pause”, and are unable to correlate with past climate. Most of the prognostications fail. Remember how were were supposed to have more and bigger hurricanes? And the Arctic was to be ice free this year? And snow would be a thing of the past?

(Daily Caller) The White House has taken down online White House visitor logs and blamed Congress.
The logs, which were posted beginning in December 2009 “as part of President Obama’s commitment to government transparency,†are the latest victims of a partial government shutdown that has temporarily idled 17 percent of the federal workforce.
“Due to Congress’s failure to pass legislation to fund the government, the information on this web site may not be up to date. Some submissions may not be processed, and we may not be able to respond to your inquiries,†reads the index page for the visitor logs. (snip)
This is also one of many cases in which the shutdown has been cited as a reason to disappear information that is potentially embarrassing to the administration. The Bureau of Labor Statistics quickly deep-sixed its September unemployment statistics as other employment proxies indicated the work situation has worsened once again. The Department of Agriculture has buried its September food stamps statistics which are also expected to show increased poverty, dependency and economic regression under Obama.
In a related article, IRS official Sarah Hall Ingram, currently being grilled (again) over IRS problems, visited the Spite House 165 times, 155 with top aids. Which is probably more than Republicans have visited. And possibly more than even elected Democrats.

(UK Dailymail) Just 51,000 people completed Obamacare applications during the first week the Healthcare.gov website was online, according to two sources inside the Department of Health and Human Services who gave MailOnline an exclusive look at the earliest enrollment numbers.
The career civil servants, who process data inside the agency, confirmed independently that just 6,200 Americans applied for health insurance through the problem-plagued website on October 1, the day it first opened to the public.
Neither HHS nor the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services would comment on the record about the numbers. Enroll America, the president’s organization of health care ‘navigators’ who are charged with helping Americans sign up, didn’t reply to a request for information about its level of success so far.
The White House also did not respond to emails seeking comment.
Now, these are people who completed the applications. This doesn’t mean they actually obtained health insurance. Nor that they are eligible for “subsidies”. If the numbers were super-awesome, we know that Team Obama would be spiking the football left and right. Instead, the obfuscate, give mealy-mouthed responses, and make things up when asked.
BTW, isn’t it funny that we have to find out so much information from the British press regarding the most transparent administration evah!?

With just 17% of the federal government shutdown, one has to wonder if beer inspectors are considered “non-essential”, and, if so, why we need them in the first place
(USA Today) The federal government shutdown is giving some folks one more reason to cry in their beers: An obscure but powerful arm of the Treasury Department has stopped approving new brews.
All new beers that get bottled or canned to be sold across state lines must be approved by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, known in the industry as the TTB. Federal workers must approve the label, as well as the recipe if it uses non-traditional ingredients, which many seasonal beers contain.
While the TTB as stopped approving new recipes and labels, workers there are still collecting brewery taxes.
Got that? No approvals, but still collecting taxes. Kinda like this
(CBS News) Nearly 36,000 employees who work for the Federal Bureau of Prisons across the country have to work during the government shutdown in order to “protect human life and property,” including the ones in Yankton.
“Basically, we are working right now on an IOU for the government, and we have families to support. We have bills to pay, and we’re expected to be here,” American Federation of Government Employees Local 4040 Union President Michele Kunkel said.
But while workers are going without paychecks, inmates at the prison are not.
“There’s a different funding for them,” Kunkel said of the inmates who are getting paid for the jobs they do while in custody.
That’s right: we continue to pay federal prisoners (why we would pay them in the first place is idiotic).

Are you ready for yet another climate tipping point article fable?
(Washington Post) Locations around the globe will soon reach climatic tipping points, with some in tropical regions — home to most of the world’s biodiversity — feeling the first impacts of unprecedented eras of elevated temperatures as soon as seven years from now, according to a study released Wednesday.
On average, locations worldwide will leave behind the climates that have existed from the middle of the 19th century through the beginning of the 21st century by 2047 if no progress is made in curbing emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases, said researchers at the University of Hawaii at Manoa who sought to project the timing of that event for 54,000 locations.
I bet you’re thinking “computer models” right now
Researchers said at a news briefing that their estimates are “conservative,†based on mountains of data from 39 models and accurate within five years in either direction for any of the locations they studied.
They say some will hit this point earlier, some later. All are decades in the future, when people will have forgotten about another scary prognostication. Remember this?
According to July 5, 1989, article in the Miami Herald, the then-director of the New York office of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Noel Brown, warned of a “10-year window of opportunity to solve†global warming. According to the 1989 article, “A senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000. We’ve heard about these “tipping points” ever since. Yet, they don’t ever actually happen, at least as prognosticated. Remember when they grew great wine grapes in England during the Medieval Climate Optimum? Well before fossil fueled vehicles and when CO2 was “safe” below 350ppm. They can’t do that now, not without gen modification. It was warmer then than now.

That “Vinerism” is the “snowfalls are a thing of the past” insanity, which included “Children just aren’t going to know what snow is”, which is where the meme “schoolkids won’t know what X (unplowed roads, oranges after a heavy frost, standing roofs) looks like” comes from, meant to denigrate these Warmists. Which leads to my next point.

But what I really don’t think we should be doing at this stage in the game is allowing it to be our problem too. As I argued here the other week, there is more than enough solid evidence now to demonstrate to any neutral party prepared to cast half an eye over it that the doomsday prognostications the warmist establishment has been trying to frighten us with these last two decades are a nonsense. The man-made global warming scare story has not a shred of scientific credibility. It’s over. And while I don’t expect the alarmists to admit this any time soon, I do think the rest of us should stop indulging them in their poisonous fantasy.
It’s also time to stop treating them as anything other than bat-shit insane fear mongers and hysterics. Time to stop treating them with any sort of deference and kid-gloves. These nuts are dangerous and insane, living in fantasy worlds meant to push their far left politics. Anyone who believes in “climate change”, and, let’s be clear, I mean the folks who think that small amounts of CO2 released by Mankind is causing every weather even, hot, cold, wet, dry, snow, ice, etc, plus volcanoes and earthquakes and everything else, should be treated as the wackjobs they are. Beaten into submission. Treated with derision.
Sarah Hall Ingram has been slammed by Republicans for months because she once headed the IRS division that targeted conservative political groups for extra scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status. She’s since gone on to head the IRS health care office (those last words should give people pause and scare the heck out of them). They were grilling her more on Wednesday. Why?
House Republican investigators Wednesday accused the woman in charge of the IRS‘ Obamacare compliance office of having leaked private taxpayer information to the White House, saying that calls into question the agency’s trustworthiness in administering the new health care reform law.

Glad Democrats are taking possible violations of federal law seriously. The emails released to Congress where heavily redacted, because that private data cannot be shared. Yet, as Republicans pointed out, it was shared with the White House.

(Blue Ridge Now) Despite the government’s official stance that they remain closed, the Pisgah Inn’s concessionaire has filed an injunction to prevent the National Park Service from enforcing the federal shutdown of his hotel, restaurant and retail operations.
The inn, at Milepost 408.6 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, began booking people into rooms Wednesday and planned to offer dinner service in its restaurant beginning at 5 p.m., according to front desk manager Kent Burgess. The inn’s gift shop and country store reopened Wednesday morning, he said. (snip)
That’s when an injunction O’Connell filed in federal court Monday “went through the proper channels, and we were notified we could reopen,†said Miller, who added that attorneys in Asheville and Washington, D.C. were hired to do the legal work.
The NPS did the human version of Barrycades, despite the road being open and them patrolling it. And making sure people don’t poach plants. And keeping people “safe”.
Supposedly, according to both the Asheville Citizen Times and USA Today, the NPS agreed to let him re-open in exchange for dropping the suit, though the Blue Ridge Now article states that Chief Ranger Steve Stinnett thinks it’s shutdown business as usual. This lady in ACT link puts it well
Gay Huff, of Mississippi, and her husband, Perry, stopped during a parkway trip from Cherokee, where they were staying. They were not aware the inn had been closed but said they’ve been disappointed in the shuttering of the nation’s parks.
“For any of it to be denied to the general public turns me inside out,†she said. “It is a personal violation that is hard for me to contain or even express.â€
It’s all about making you feel the pain, Ms. Huff. Despite 83% of the government still operating.
