Know What The Problem With Obamacare Is? We’re Too Stupid To Understand It

I’m not sure if telling Americans they aren’t particularly smart is the best way to sell a product…but, then, we did have over 50% vote for Obama

Are We Smart Enough for Obamacare?

Leaving aside the perceptions of Obamacare that prove so vexing to conservatives, there’s a huge problem with the current conception of the Affordable Care Act: It requires Americans to determine something complex on their own.

This is not a criticism of the Health Insurance Marketplace websites like healthcare.gov, which look like they’re using a language remarkably like everyday English and navigation that’s reasonably intuitive. No, this is a criticism of average people, both educated and uneducated, who must engage a process that involves reading, comprehension, and decision-making—and applied to a process developed by bureaucrats and described as “an ugly patch on an ugly system.” It’s no wonder the roll-out involved hiring “navigators” who can offer in-person help for people drowning in data.

It does beg the question “if this is so damned complicated and difficult to understand, is this a good program?” If they’ve made things this complex but mandate people to either purchase insurance or face a fine/tax, and we’re talking about just understanding the way the insurance works and simply signing up, this is a problem. And we haven’t even gotten to the point where people would attempt to use the “Affordable” Care Act insurance yet.

Shutdown Theater: Gov’t Buys $47k Mechanical Bull

But, people aren’t allowed to enter monuments and parks which are open air and 24/7

(CNSNews.com) – The government shutdown may be keeping furloughed federal workers at home, but on Monday the U.S. Army contracted to buy a mechanical bull.

The $47,174 contract was awarded on Oct. 7 to Mechanical Bull Sales Inc. of State College, Penn.

According to the General Services Administration (GSA) listing, the National Guard of Utah made the request for a “bull which needs to be durable and low maintenance.”

I guess Nancy Pelosi is right, the cupboard is bare, we’ve cut everything.

Eight Elected Democrats Arrested At Illegal Immigration Rally

Remember when we were told that the Park Service gave the rally a permit because it was about Free Speech? 1st Amendment stuff? What about the part where they were not “demonstrating peaceably”?

(Politico) Nationwide demonstrations calling for comprehensive immigration reform culminated with a rally in Washington on Tuesday to forcefully press lawmakers to overhaul the nation’s immigration laws this year.

In an attempt to ramp up the heat on their colleagues, eight members of Congress joined advocacy leaders and were arrested in a show of civil disobedience designed to send a message to act on immigration reform – an issue that has so far stalled on Capitol Hill amid a showdown over fiscal policy.

John Lewis (D-Ga) was joined by fellow Democratic Reps. Charlie Rangel of New York, Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, Raul Grijalva of Arizona, Joe Crowley of New York, Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, Keith Ellison of Minnesota and Al Green of Texas in blocking the streets near the National Mall to bring attention to their efforts, subsequently getting arrested.

Hey, this is fun

The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Article II, Section 4. Getting arrested sure sounds like a Misdemeanor while agitating for people who have broken our laws. But, we can’t leave open air monuments un-Barrycaded, but we can have dozens and dozens of police available to deal with this mess of scoff-laws. Even more fun

Reid Wants $1.1 Trillion Debt Limit Hike Through 2014

This should tell you where Democrat priorities lie. Harry Reid surely consulted with Obama on this, regardless of Team Obama saying they’re open to a short term debt extension

(The Hill) Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is moving legislation to push the debt limit until Dec. 31, 2014, well beyond next year’s midterm election.

Senate aides estimate the bill would increase federal borrowing authority by about $1.1 trillion.

The administration estimates the nation will hit the upper bounds of its $16.7 trillion debt ceiling on Oct. 17, although in recent days experts have said that deadline may be flexible.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) blasted Reid’s proposal for not including any spending reform.

“What he proposes is to raise the debt limit by $1 trillion, but not do anything about the debt,” McConnell said. “Not a single reform to get spending under control. We’ve got a debt close to $17 trillion.

We’ve seen the debt explode by over $6 trillion under the stewardship of Mr. Obama. Obama once said, during the Neverending Campaign period before he was elected in 2008, that adding $4 trillion in debt was “unpatriotic” and “irresponsible”. The debt went up $4.899 trillion during Bush’s 8 years, not something to be proud of. With Reid’s proposal, Obama would be adding well over $7 trillion. It stood at $10.626 trillion. It’s almost $17 trillion today.

And, yet, Reid also offered zero reforms, and surely no cuts. As Mark Steyn says, we’re the brokeyest broke nation in history.

Shutdown Theater: NSA Spying Essential, Oversight Not

Buried in the technology section of the Washington Post writer Andrea Peterson finds something interesting

While the National Security Agency (NSA) has largely escaped the government shutdown, the panel investigating NSA spying practices has effectively been frozen. Politico reports that as of Friday, the five-member Review Group on Intelligence and Communications Technologies lost its staff to the furlough associated with the government shutdown.

The group, which is largely comprised of intelligence community and White House insiders, …(snip)

… While in theory the members are unpaid, so the panel could continue without support staff or payment for travel expenses, that seems unlikely.

Well, not like the panel was giving a damn about the spying.on Americans in the first place.

Deadly Boat Accident Blamed On Climate Change

You know, climate refugees

(EurActiv) Voices from across the developing world are warning EU leaders that a failure to cut CO2 emissions and respect funding commitments for projects to mitigate and adapt to global warming will lead to more climate refugees, and more tragedies like the one in Lampedusa.

As of today (8 October), the death toll from the sunken refugee boat stands at 232 people but, with another 200 still missing, it is expected to rise.

The boat was mostly carrying migrants from Eritrea, which the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says “has suffered greatly from the negative effects of climate variability” since 2000, and now suffers drought every three years.

Do we have long term data on Eritrea? We do know that it sits on the Horn of Africa. It’s eastern part along the Red Sea has generally been hot and dry. Unsurprising. They also deal with constant political issues, including from Islamic extremists, known formally as the Eritrean Islamic Jihad (they go by other names, too).

I do enjoy the part about “negative effects of climate variability”. Will that be the new talking point from Warmists, blaming man for cold and hot? Anyhow, if people can’t adapt to less than a 1.3C increase in temperatures, perhaps they shouldn’t be living in that area.

Interesting. Notice the pause/dip from 2000 on.

Shutdown Theater: Man Fined For Jogging At National Park

Perhaps someone could remind Obama and the Spite House exactly who owns these parks (via Jammie Wearing Fools)

(Philly.com) A marathoner says he was fined $100 for running in Valley Forge National Historical Park during the government shutdown.

John Bell, 56, said he parked his car on Sunday in a remote parking lot, not one blocked by a barrier. Bell, of Chadds Ford, said two rangers were waiting with their car lights flashing when he returned.

Bell said he plans to fight the ticket in federal court. He said he saw many other runners and bikers in the park.

Maine’s Acadia National Park had trouble keeping visitors out during the shutdown and was issuing fines to campers, bikers and hikers. On Saturday, 16 hikers hopped a gate to gain entry to Utah’s closed Zion National Park to protest the shutdown.

Jogging. Yet, it took weeks and months for government to do anything about the Occupy Wall St. crowd, even with all the rapes, murders, stabbings, pooping on police cars and doorsteps, drug use, destruction of public and private property, etc. Yet, somehow, Democrats are backing an illegal alien rally on the National Mall. Which is otherwise closed.

More at Twitchy.
