In 1974 Time Blamed Polar Vortex On Global Cooling

What a change religiosity, er, 40 years makes (via Steven Goddard)

Scientists have found other indications of global cooling. For one thing there has been a noticeable expansion of the great belt of dry, high-altitude polar winds —the so-called circumpolar vortex—that sweep from west to east around the top and bottom of the world.

That’s from Time’s big article “Another Ice Age?” Yesterday I linked to a Time article blaming the PV on warming. As Goddard notes

At least the 1974 version made sense. Bryan Walsh’s 2014 version makes a complete farce out of science.

But, Warmists aren’t practicing science.

Good Grief: Cold Weather Events More Likely Due To “Climate Change”

These people are simply nuts

(The Hill) Global warming may be contributing to the “polar vortex” causing frigid temperatures across most of the nation on Monday, according to some climate change researchers.

While it seems counter-intuitive, the research argues that plunging temperatures could come from changes in the jet stream caused by climate change.

Rutgers University climate scientist Jennifer A Francis has released a number of papers about changes in the jet stream brought about by warming Arctic temperatures.

Her conclusions suggest that warming Arctic air caused by greenhouse gas emissions has caused changing to the jet stream that is pushing colder Arctic air further south, causing temperatures to plunge from the High Plains to the Deep South.

Except it’s winter in the Arctic and … why bother explaining any sort of science, facts, and reality to Warmists, they aren’t interested in it in the least.

She said the strange weather is becoming more likely because of climate change.

“We can’t say that these are extremes are because of climate change but we can say that this kind of pattern is becoming more likely because of climate change,” Francis said.

There you have it: people driving fossil fueled vehicles are making it more likely that the nation will see massive cold fronts more often. And some wonder why Skeptics refer to Warmists as members of a doomsday cult. They perform climate astrology on a constant basis. Cold used to be caused by cold, now cold is caused by warmth. Ridiculous.

Ms. Francis is not the only moonbat yammering on about a link to “climate change”. There are numerous articles with Warmists desperately attempting to link the “polar vortex” to mankind’s release of greenhouse gases. I featured a few Monday. The Wire think it’s ironic that fossil fuels production is shut down to to the cold weather. Many are trotting out the same mule fritters line about warmth causing a dip in the jet stream. Because cold weather never happened before.

Chicago’s Gun Sales Laws Struck Down As Unconstitutional

Finally, someone standing up for the Constitution and the people turned into unarmed victims thanks to Chicago’s gun-grabbing liberal politicians

(Fox News) A federal judge on Monday overturned Chicago’s ban on the sale and transfer of firearms, ruling that the city’s ordinances aimed at reducing gun violence are unconstitutional.

U.S. District Judge Edmond E. Chang said in his ruling that while the government has a duty to protect its citizens, it’s also obligated to protect constitutional rights, including the right to keep and bear arms for self-defense. However, Chang said he would temporarily stay the effects of his ruling, meaning the ordinances can stand while the city decides whether to appeal.

Chang wrote that the nation’s third-largest city “goes too far in outright banning legal buyers and legal dealers from engaging in lawful acquisitions and lawful sales of firearms, and at the same time the evidence does not support that the complete ban sufficiently furthers the purposes that the ordinance tries to serve.”

The only down side is that Judge Chang put a temporary stay on the order to give the city time to respond. And, certainly, Chicago will do all it can to make sure the law abiding citizens continue to be victims to those criminal elements who really do not care about laws.

The Meme Grows: Time Jumps On The “Cold Is Caused By Climate Change” Bandwagon

You shouldn’t be surprised that the article is written by uber-Warmist Bryan Walsh

Climate Change Might Just Be Driving the Historic Cold Snap

Climate change skeptics are pointing to the record cold weather as evidence that the globe isn’t warming. But it could be that melting Arctic ice is making sudden cold snaps more likely—not less

…..

But not only does the cold spell not disprove climate change, it may well be that global warming could be making the occasional bout of extreme cold weather in the U.S. even more likely. Right now much of the U.S. is in the grip of a polar vortex, which is pretty much what it sounds like: a whirlwind of extremely cold, extremely dense air that forms near the poles. Usually the fast winds in the vortex—which can top 100 mph (161 k/h)—keep that cold air locked up in the Arctic. But when the winds weaken, the vortex can begin to wobble like a drunk on his fourth martini, and the Arctic air can escape and spill southward, bringing Arctic weather with it. In this case, nearly the entire polar vortex has tumbled southward, leading to record-breaking cold, as you can see in this weatherbell.com graphic:

Let’s be clear on one thing: when Warmists talk about “climate change”, what they’re discussing is changes in the weather and long term climate due mostly or solely to the actions of Mankind, primarily the use of fossil fuels. Now, a few cold winters, and certainly a massive cold front, does not mean the end of the current long term trend of a warm period, which was preceded by a cold period, then a warm, then a cold, etc, going back to the last glacial period. Which surely saw variations in climate. But they were telling us just a few years ago that this was not supposed to happen anymore.  Then the Real World comes up and smacks them with the cold, dead Mackerel of reality, blowing their computer models and talking points out of the water, so they have to reach into their bag of tricks.

The debate is not on warming, weather, or climate, it is on causation…..wait, you’ve read this argument before, so let’s just go to the facepalm for Bryan, shall we?

National Review: Colorado’s Marijuana Law Is Sensible

This article probably has blown the minds of a few liberals. Here’s NRO’s Editorial Board

Launching 17 million “Rocky Mountain High” jokes, Colorado has become the first state to make the prudent choice of legalizing the consumption and sale of marijuana, thus dispensing with the charade of medical restrictions and recognizing the fact that, while some people smoke marijuana to counter the effects of chemotherapy, most people smoke marijuana to get high — and that is not the worst thing in the world.

Regardless of whether one accepts the individual-liberty case for legalizing marijuana, the consequentialist case is convincing. That is because the history of marijuana prohibition is a catalogue of unprofitable tradeoffs: billions in enforcement costs, and hundreds of thousands of arrests each year, in a fruitless attempt to control a mostly benign drug the use of which remains widespread despite our energetic attempts at prohibition. We make a lot of criminals while preventing very little crime, and do a great deal of harm in the course of trying to prevent an activity that presents little if any harm in and of itself. (snip)

Perhaps most important, the legalization of marijuana in Colorado — and the push for its legalization elsewhere — is a sign that Americans still recognize some limitations on the reach of the state and its stable of nannies-in-arms.

While NRO does discuss the fact that pot is, yes, a drug, and can be abused, they seem to be taking the position that 1) government wastes too much money on resources and enforcement of what is a minor drug, as well as judicial proceedings and incarceration, and 2) if a State wants to do this, hey, that’s what the Constitution is for, particularly the 10th Amendment.

While there can certainly be some negative affects from Colorado’s pot law, most particularly making it easier for people in the surrounding states to obtain pot in a “black market”, I’ve argued before that if people want to get stoned, or even buzzed, go for it. I won’t get deep into that argument, as I’ve done it before. Just don’t blow it in my face. I don’t smoke pot. I used to, long ago, but I stopped enjoying it.

Polar Vortex Blamed On, You Guessed It, Climate Change

Is it ironic that this article is written by Dr. Susan Brooks Thislethwaite, Professor of Theology, Chicago Theological Seminary, and appears in the Huffington Post religion section? It’s certainly spew on your monitor funny

Cold as Hell: The Chilling Effect of Global Warming

Hell is normally depicted as a “lake of fire,” as in Revelation 20:10. This week in the Midwest, however, Hell is likely to look more like lakes of ice, as dangerous cold from a polar vortex, brings “wind chills [that] could hit 50, 60 or even 70 below zero.” The Great Lakes will likely freeze over and prolong an already very cold winter.

This is the chilling effect of global warming, as NASA points out: Cold Snaps Plus Global Warming Do Add Up.

This frigid weather is another example of the kind of violent and abrupt climate change that results from global warming. It’s ongoing impact falls disproportionately on where you live, certainly, but especially if you are poor.

There you go: mega-frigid cold is caused by greenhouse gases which make things warm. All “climate change” articles belong in the religion section. Well, the section on cults, anyhow.

The science of what is causing this current extreme cold is, in fact, complex, and research is ongoing.

Complex because Warmists have to invent wild rationales to encompass deciding that cold and snow are part of “climate change”. Mother Nature Network links a long video by Rutgers University’s Jennifer Francis and Weather Underground’s Jeff Masters explaining why cold frikking weather is all part of the theory of hotcoldwetdry.

But while the science of changes to the polar vortex and its relationship to global warming are complex, the Christian theology of our failure to protect the creation is not complex.

Simply put, the Christian theological argument must start with our sinful failure to take care of the creation, as God intends (Gen. 2:15). Instead, we are trashing the planet and changing its climate primarily through the fossil fuel emissions.

So, you’re a bad Christian if you drive a fossil fueled vehicle (anyone want to place a bet on whether the good Dr. Susan drives a fossil fueled vehicle and takes fossil fueled plane trips?), but, you’re not a bad Christian if you support abortion on demand, which is the primary position of most who post at the HuffPo.  Driving a fossil fueled vehicle is now a “sin”.

Chris Mooney, in an article called Dear Donald Trump: Winter Does Not Disprove Global Warming, has made a valiant attempt to explain to Trump and others on the right-wing how winter and global warming interact. “Global warming is actually expected to increase ‘heavy precipitation in winter storms,’ and for the northern hemisphere, there is evidence that these storms are already more frequent and intense, according to to the draft US National Climate Assessment.”

In that article, Mooney explains (note: I’m leaving the 3rd point out, as it is about Antarctica, going more to the Ship Of Fools)

  1. Statements about climate trends must be based on, er, trends. Not individual events or occurrences. Weather is not climate, and anecdotes are not statistics.
  1. Global warming is actually expected to increase “heavy precipitation in winter storms,” and for the northern hemisphere, there is evidence that these storms are already more frequent and intense, according to the draft U.S. National Climate Assessment.

Four out of the last five Northern Hemisphere winters have been brutal, particularly in Britain, Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. This winter is shaping up to be brutal. The long term 17 year trend is for statistically insignificant warming. The 13 year trend is for no warming. But, remember, when any weather occurs Warmists run out to tell us that this is Proof!!!!!!!, proof, I tell you, of “climate change”, ie, man-caused. They even tell us the current warming pause is caused by “climate change”. Weather is climate over the long term.

This is a cult, the articles belong in the religion section of all outlets, and Warmists who use fossil fuels should be labeled as heretics for sinning.

Senator Ron Johnson To Sue Obama Admin Over Congressional Exemption

We can quibble to our heart’s content over the word “exemption”, but at the end of the day the Office of Personnel Management decision violates the text of the law

(Wall Street Journal) On Monday, Jan. 6, I am filing suit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin to make Congress live by the letter of the health-care law it imposed on the rest of America. By arranging for me and other members of Congress and their staffs to receive benefits intentionally ruled out by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the administration has exceeded its legal authority.

The president and his congressional supporters have also broken their promise to the American people that ObamaCare was going to be so good that they would participate in it just like everyone else. In truth, many members of Congress feel entitled to an exemption from the harsh realities of the law they helped jam down Americans’ throats in 2010. Unlike millions of their countrymen who have lost coverage and must now purchase insurance through an exchange, members and their staffs will receive an employer contribution to help pay for their new plans.

It is clear that this special treatment, via a ruling by the president’s Office of Personnel Management, was deliberately excluded in the law. During the drafting, debate and passage of ObamaCare, the issue of how the law should affect members of Congress and their staffs was repeatedly addressed. Even a cursory reading of the legislative history clearly shows the intent of Congress was to ensure that members and staff would no longer be eligible for their current coverage under the Federal Employee Health Benefit Plan.

Senator Johnson goes on to point out that once members of Congress who voted for and support Obamacare found out what’s in it and how it affect them, they went running to Obama to find a way out for themselves, ending with the magical decision by OPM to treat congress as a small business along with providing payment to Congressional members and their staffs.

The legal basis for our lawsuit (which I will file with a staff member, Brooke Ericson, as the other plaintiff) includes the fact that the OPM ruling forces me, as a member of Congress, to engage in activity that I believe violates the law. It also potentially alienates members of Congress from their constituents, since those constituents are witnessing members of Congress blatantly giving themselves and their staff special treatment.

If Johnson wins the suit, it won’t end Obamacare, much like all the suits over the contraception mandate will not end the terrible law. But, it will make Congress live under the same rules everyone else has to live under.

Ship Of Fools Pledges To Plant 800 Trees To Offset Expedition

Hmm, it seems they’re heavily aware of all the fossil fuels they’ve used, you know, fossil fuels which are supposedly evil (via Breitbart)

(NZ Herald) The hapless Australasian Antarctic Expedition is finally homeward bound – and thousands of trees will have to be planted to offset the carbon footprint from the prolonged rescue effort. (snip)

The expedition had pledged to plant about 800 kauri trees in Northland to cover its carbon footprint. Environmentalists believe planting trees helps to offset the impact of burning fuels such as diesel.

But former Act Party leader and Herald on Sunday columnist Rodney Hide said that would have to increase to about 5000 trees to make up for the fossil fuels burned in the rescue.

Expedition leader Chris Turney said more trees would be needed than earlier estimated but he was yet to work out how many.

This is like acknowledging that running red lights is Bad, and Other People should be stopped from running red lights, but you yourself will run red lights and simply pay the fines. Because you’re spreading awareness that running red lights is Bad.

Of course, when all is said and done, is there really much in the way of proof that these trees actually get planted? Oh, I’m sure a few trees get planted here and there via purchasing carbon offsets, but what is the overall percentage?
