NY Times: Democrats Worried About Obama Factor

Alternate headline: NY Times, Democrats whine like 4 year olds over Republican groups daring to spend money against them. This article, which appears on page A1 of the New York edition is highlights three things, namely that Democrats are concerned about Obama’s falling poll numbers, that Conservative groups are outspending Democrats (the nerve!!!!!), and that Obama is a cheapskate and not helping Democrats

(NY Times) Democrats are becoming increasingly alarmed about their midterm election fortunes amid President Obama’s sinking approval ratings, a loss in a special House election in Florida last week, and millions of dollars spent by Republican-aligned groups attacking the new health law.

The combination has led to uncharacteristic criticism of Mr. Obama and bitter complaints that his vaunted political organization has done little to help the party’s vulnerable congressional candidates.

You have Scott Brown forming an exploratory committee to unseat Jeane Shaheen in New Hampshire, and the Times causally mentions the $600k pledged by Crossroads USA.

Interviews with more than two dozen Democratic members of Congress, state party officials and strategists revealed a new urgency about the need to address the party’s prospects. One Democratic lawmaker, who asked not to be identified, said Mr. Obama was becoming “poisonous” to the party’s candidates. At the same time, Democrats are pressing senior aides to Mr. Obama for help from the political network.

“I’m a prolific fund-raiser, but I can’t compete with somebody who has got 50-some-odd billion dollars,” said Representative Joe Garcia of Florida, a vulnerable first-term member who has already faced more than $500,000 in negative TV ads from third-party conservative groups. “One hopes the cavalry is coming. One hopes the cavalry is coming.”

The gap is yawning. Outside Republican groups have spent about $40 million in this election cycle, compared with just $17 million by Democrats.

A couple points: Obama raises money for Obama. He wasn’t that generous during 2008, 2010, nor 2012 with all that cash. He rarely helps other Democrats monetarily. Second, it’s apparently Bad when Republicans raise and spend money or something, and the constant inclusion of the money totals are supposed to highlight that outside Republican groups are buying the elections, and this is Bad. Surprisingly, Citizens United is not mentioned, but hardcore liberals know this is what is meant. The article is a bit more subtle, as an attempt to sway independent and squishy Dem voters.

Oh, and where were the complaints when Team Obama blew off the promise to take public financing in 2008, and raised $750 million, vastly outdoing John McCain? Where were the complaints for the same in 2012? Where were the complaints over George Soros and other deep pocketed Dems spending hundreds of millions to defeat Bush, Republicans, and Conservative causes?

“The state of Democrats is very much tied to the state of the president, and in that regard, these are far from the best of times,” said Geoff Garin, a Democratic pollster.

In addition to problems with the health law, the White House is losing the support of Democrats on key appointments such as Mr. Obama’s nominee to head the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division and his choice to be surgeon general. Also last week, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Democrat of California, broke with the administration with a scalding criticism of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Also consider that, while Team Obama is offering some stage time help from Obama, he hasn’t really helped them out elsewhere. He rarely talks with those in Congress. He constantly denigrates Congress, and while insiders may understand Obama means Republicans in Congress, the average American won’t understand the nuance, as they do not pay that much attention. Obama’s policies aren’t helping. His talking points generally only help with the hardcores who would vote D anyhow. And he’s not spending his own campaign cash on them.

Most Democrats up for re-election are trying to put some distance between themselves and the president, choosing surrogates such as Mr. Clinton to campaign for them, particularly in the South and parts of the West.

Asked whether Mr. Obama is a liability, Representative Ami Bera, Democrat of California, demurred. “We haven’t really focused much on the president,” he said. “We’re focused on Sacramento County and the folks that are there.”

Expect to hear quite a bit of that talking point. When Obama was strong it was all about taking care of the country, especially regarding health care/insurance. Now that the signature legislation has proven to be as bad as Conservatives said, Dems are focusing locally or something.

Just wait till spring training is over and the regular season gets into full swing, and these Obama avoiding locally focused Dems get smacked with Obamacare and voting lockstep with Obama.

Though, to be honest, there is always that little thought in the back of my mind wondering how Republicans will screw this up.

Bummer: Americans Not Buying The Notion That Cold Is Caused By “Climate Change”

As you might know, Warmists have been pushing the notion that cold and snow and ice, ie, winter weather, is now caused by “climate change”, due to man-induced greenhouse gas release. That talking point, designed to protect the “climate change” cult during a 17 year pause in statistically significant warming, and after several strong winters, isn’t gaining traction with the American people. They also aren’t buying the drought argument, either

(Gallup) Two in three Americans say their local area is experiencing colder-than-usual temperatures this winter, and one in four say their area is experiencing drought. When asked why they think these extreme weather events are happening, many more say they are attributable to normal yearly variation in temperature or rainfall than to human-caused climate change or global warming.

The cult just can’t catch a break.

This was part 3 of Gallup surveys on “climate change”. The first showed that “climate change” ranks almost dead last on the list of American concerns. The second, which was published on the 13th, shows that only 36% are concerned with global warming in their lifetime. It is elevated from the beginning of the polling in 1998, but down a bit from a high of 40% in 2008. But, this doesn’t distinguish causation, ie, whether natural, anthropogenic, or a mix.

9 Year Old NJ Girl Explains Restrictive Guns Law Idiocy

This goes to the proposed law I mentioned back in February, which would limit magazines to 10 rounds, among other things. She, figuratively, blew the room away

(The Blaze) Speaking before the New Jersey Law and Public Safety Committee in Trenton, N.J., on Thursday, 9-year-old competition shooter Shyanne Roberts spoke in opposition to a proposed bill that would further limit magazine capacity to 10 rounds.

In her speech, which earned thunderous applause from the audience, she presented the simplicity and common sense nature of the pro-gun argument in a way only a kid can.

“I am not a ‘gang banger or domestic terrorist’ as a certain vocal supporter of this bill claimed two weeks ago in the Star Ledger,” Roberts said. “This bill, if it becomes law, will severely impact me and a million other gun owners.”

The 9-year-old girl explained that she is a 4th-grade honor roll student and competitive shooter in multiple styles with numerous local, state and national sponsors.

“I have worked and trained very hard to get to the level I am at and if A2006 becomes law, I will be forced to choose between giving up on a very great and promising future in a sport that I love or asking my dad to move to another state. I will not be giving up my sport.”

She stated that if the law went into effect, it would make illegal the sport of competitive shooting

“Everyone is upset about bad people doing bad things to others, but punishing the people who didn’t do anything wrong is not the way to stop bad people,” she added. “If it wasn’t against the law, I would’ve brought one of my competition guns with me today to show you it won’t do anything unless someone touches it.”

Boom! She encapsulates the issue succinctly, in that the laws criminalize the behavior of law abiding citizens and punish them. And let’s not forget that the true criminals that these laws are supposed to stop do not care, because they are criminals.

Obama: Hey, We’ve Got Enough Enrollments To Ensure Obamacare Survives

He’s pretty casual in throwing out the supposed enrollment figure, though strangely unable to provide the risk pool mixes

(Washington Post) President Obama said Friday he was confident enough Americans had enrolled under the Affordable Care Act to make the program “stable.”

In an interview with WebMD (transcript here), Obama said the fact that 4.2 million people have already signed up for plans under federal and state marketplaces mean enough companies will be invested to stay in the system.

“Well, at this point, enough people are signing up that the Affordable Care Act is going to work. The insurance companies will continue to offer plans,” the president said. “It will be a larger number than that by the end of March 31st, the deadline to get insurance this year.”

How many healthy people have signed up? Don’t ask the President Of The United States, of which this is his signature law. He doesn’t know. Or didn’t bother to know. Or knows, but refuses to say

Obama noted, however, that the larger question is whether the risk pool is diverse enough to ensure premiums don’t skyrocket, since “the more you can spread the risk with more people, the better deal you’re going to get.”

“You know, the impact in terms of the program has always been based more on the mix of people who sign up. Do we have a mix of people who are gray-haired like me and may have some old basketball injuries and aches and pains, along with young people who are healthy and don’t really have any issues right now?” he asked. “Do we have a good mix of gender, in terms of men and women?”

It would be nice if the POTUS had the answer to those questions. For the amount of money already spent developing the websites and getting this POS law up and running, one would think there would be a way to obtain the data. The insurance companies must know what the mixes are. Either Obama doesn’t know, which makes him derelict in his job, or does know, and knows the numbers are bad. From the transcript

So, if all 40 million people who didn’t have health insurance all signed up by March 31st –in which case there probably would be a line, a little bit, in terms of signing up –but if all 40 million people signed up, then you could assure that probably the premiums would go down significantly next year, just because the pool would have gone beyond what the insurance companies anticipated.

Well, we’re only 36 million off. And the CBO estimates that, come 2024, there will still be 31 million uninsured. But, here’s an interesting little tidbit

A White House official noted that the federal law now requires an adequate network of providers, and in the coming year Health and Human Services “plans to have even more aggressive efforts in place to ensure that consumers have good networks of doctors, community providers and specialists.”

Does that sound to you like HHS is planning on forcing insurers to increase the networks? Which would cause costs to skyrocket, of course. And we can speculate that HHS would force insurers to eat the costs. Not that we should feel sorry for the insurance companies, at least those who were cheerleaders for this law.

Claim: Bin Laden’s Body Not Shown Because It Was Riddled With Bullet Holes

Real? Not Real? You decide for yourself

(The Blaze) The “real reason” the White House has yet to release photos of Osama bin Laden’s corpse is because U.S. troops “took turns dumping magazines-worth of ammunition” into the terror leader’s body, according to a new SOFREP report. Citing unnamed sources within the special ops community, the report alleges bin Laden “had over a hundred bullets in him, by the most conservative estimate.”

Lest you think this is just The Blaze, the article originated at the Huffington Post, which worries about “savagery” from US military personnel

Initial reports claimed two shots were fired to kill bin Laden. While that number climbed in later reports, the claims of “over a hundred bullets” would suggest a level of savagery and, as SOFREP puts it, “self-indulgence” not admitted in prior accounts of the operation. SOFREP notes these actions would violate the Laws of Land Warfare and build on a disturbing trend of alarmingly brutal military behavior that includes graphic evidence of U.S. troops burning and urinating on slain enemy combatants.

But an extreme degree of violence would explain why U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration was so resistant to release a set of photos, for fear of a possible backlash against U.S. interests.

Whatever.

Al Gore Takes Long Fossil Fueled Flight To Complain About Fossil Fuels

When we discuss Warmists being hypocrites, this is exactly what we’re referring to

(Mail And Guardian) Al Gore, the former American vice-president and Nobel Peace prize winner, spoke on the second day of the Climate Reality Leadership Corps training in Johannesburg on Thursday. The event drew environmental thinkers and activists from around the continent. The corps is a global movement to teach people about climate change and help them adapt to a changing world.

In his presentation, Gore gave an overview of how humans were driving climate change and how it was affecting conditions around the world right now.

“Whenever any important question is ultimately resolved into a choice between right and wrong, the outcome becomes inevitable.” The current global system was destroying the habitability of the planet by burning fossil fuels, Gore said, adding that it was wrong and needed to change. “We can see the pathway ahead very clearly and we are going to prevail.”

A round trip flight from Tennessee to Johannesburg, S.A puts out almost 10 metric tons of “carbon pollution” (that’s Gore’s euphemism for CO2). The average “carbon footprint” for Americans is around 19 metric tons yearly. For world citizens, it is around 4 metric tons. So Gore put out almost half of what each American does for a year, and over double for a world citizen, just to give a brief talk in South Africa.

And, yeah, he does his normal insane schtick

The number of warmer days had rapidly increased since the 1980s as a result. Extreme cold and hot days used to occur 0.1% of the time, now they happen 10% of the time.

So greenhouse gases make it cold, too? He blames hurricanes and tropical storms on “climate change”, and pretty much everything. What he fails to show is proof that it is mostly/solely caused by Mankind, instead, like most Warmists, he jumps to conclusions, creating a causal relationship, yet, refuses to live the carbon neutral life he tells everyone else to live.

Poll Shows Europe Cares Little About Climate Change

We already know that “climate change” ranks at the bottom of concerns for American citizens. How about for the EU? Bjorn Lomborg finds an interesting study

EU likes to say “climate change is one of the greatest challenges of the modern age.”

But its citizens don’t think so. They focus on unemployment, the economic situation, inflation, government debt, health, social security, immigration, crime, taxes, pensions, education and housing before they worry about climate.

Moreover, notice, how they’ve bunched up environment, climate *and* energy issues, and still can’t get it above 5%.

The whole report, from Eurobarometer fall 2013, shows a lot of other interesting facts. Perhaps surprisingly, the only countries that seem to worry even remotely about global warming are Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Malta (global warming is 3rd or 4th most important). Perhaps not so surprisingly, these are also the countries that are feeling the least worried about their economy.

So, when you’re rich and unconcerned, you can allow yourself to also worry a bit about global warming. But otherwise, you care about more immediate issues.

25+ years of pushing “climate change”, of attempting to scare the citizens, and even in Europe there is an overall shoulder shrug.

But, then, why should the average citizen be concerned with “climate change” when Warmists aren’t based on their own inaction and refusal to modify their own lives to match their supposed belief sets?

The report is here.
