    The Welland Canal is a system of 8 locks permitting large vessels to move from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario to ports in Montreal or Quebec City for transfer of loads from the U.S. (e.g., Cleveland) to ocean going vessels. It bypasses Niagara Falls.

    The Canal passes some 3,000 ships per year, which transport about 40 million tons (88 billion pounds) of cargo.

    The Welland Canal is wholly located in Ontario, Canada. Oops.
