NYT: Black Workers’ Wages ‘Are Finally Rising’ After ‘Decade of Stagnation’
The New York Times reported Friday morning that African American workers are seeing their wages rise for the first time after a “decade of stagnation,†further evidence of the strength of the U.S. economy.
The Times report came as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the economy created 225,000 new jobs in January, smashing expectations. Unemployment ticked upward to 3.6% — but that was due to more workers entering the labor force, generating the highest labor force participation rate thus far in the recovery from the Great Recession. Average hourly wage gains also rose slightly year-on-year, to 3.1%.
Black unemployment is near all-time lows, and now wages are climbing, the Times reported Friday:
President Trump frequently celebrates the experience of black workers, noting correctly that the group’s unemployment rate is at its lowest on record.
Their wages are also going up — a New York Times analysis of government data found that wage growth for black workers has accelerated recently after lagging for much of the decade-long economic expansion.
The Times notes that black workers still face challenges, such as the rising cost of living in urban areas. It adds: “Not only did the gains take a decade of steady job growth to materialize, but they could evaporate at the first sign of economic weakness, as they did after previous expansions.†Read the full article here.

President Trump is increasingly highlighting his pitch to African American voters as the 2020 presidential election campaign heats up, trying to sway a key portion of the electorate in his favor despite a history of divisive rhetoric on race.
Trump’s effort was on prime-time display last week, with his campaign’s unveiling of a new Super Bowl advertisement on criminal justice reform followed by a State of the Union address and speech in Charlotte, N.C., peppered with appeals to black voters.
Trump isn’t going to win more of the black vote than his Democratic opponent, but Republican strategists say a targeting strategy that peels away even a few percentage points could have a meaningful impact for the president’s reelection.
“No one expects that Trump is going to win the African American vote,†said Republican strategist Doug Heye. But he noted that if Trump increased his vote total among African Americans by 2 or 3 percentage points, it could make the election “harder for Democrats.â€
All he has to do is peel a few percentage points in the states he must win to have enough Electoral College points. Further, if he can get other blacks to start wondering “what have Democrats ever really done for me?”, he can get them to not vote for Democrats, even if they aren’t voting Trump. This could also make a big difference in down ballot races, including in states that do not vote Trump.
