Just a bit of a follow up to yesterday’s story about the Feds offering $461 million in stimulus money for the train service between Raleigh and Charlotte (which no one takes)
Officials say the new service would cut travel time from Charlotte to Raleigh to less than three hours, even with seven stops along the way. However, the ride will only be 13 minutes faster.
By my calculations, that is $35.4 million per minute saved, for a trip that barely anyone takes in the first place. It might make more sense if they were building a high speed highway going across the middle of the state, horizontally, say, from Raleigh straight to Charlotte…..hey, why don’t we just shit can the passenger rail lines, and put a highway in! Lot easier than going NW out of Raleigh, through Greensboro, then heading SSW.
Meanwhile, the NC GOP, which controls both parts of the General Assembly, are looking to put the brakes on this waste of money, which would cost NC money in the future for little return.
