Scientists welcome ‘enormous’ US climate bill — but call for stronger action

TODAY PRESIDENT JOE Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act, a massive bill that represents the biggest investment in climate action in US history. It puts nearly $400 billion toward promoting domestic production of clean energy technology and generally retrofitting America to survive climate change. If all goes to plan, the act would slash US emissions by 40 percent by the year 2030.

In the immortal words of Uncle Sam, the bill screams: “I Want You” … to fight a war against climate change. The bill is packed with tax credits and rebates for Americans to buy electric vehicles (EVs), install heat pumps and better insulation, and slap solar panels on their roofs. We’re talking thousands upon thousands of dollars per household. In turn, all that extra investment in green technologies should juice the market, further accelerating the transition to a cleaner economy.

Spend a lot of money to save a little money, but, won’t do anything about inflation

First off, a tax credit isn’t the same as a tax deduction—it’s even better. With the latter you could reduce your taxable income, say, from $65,000 to $60,000. That means the government doesn’t take its cut of that $5,000. A tax credit, by contrast, would be you getting that full $5,000 back. So if you owe the government $10,000 after filing taxes, and you’ve got a credit for $5,000, you only end up paying $5,000.

How many middle class and working class folks owe the IRS that much money? Where it gets interesting is “If you owe the IRS $1000, or, were already getting a refund of $600, will the IRS give you that $5000? Will you get back $4000/$5700?” Most likely, you’d have the $1,000 wiped out, and get nothing else.

The Inflation Reduction Act provides tax credits for energy-efficient home improvements: new windows, doors, insulation, water heaters. So when you file your taxes, you get discounts on what you owe the feds. “Let’s say you spend $1,000 on insulation—you would be able to get a tax credit of 30 percent of that,” says Evans. “So a $300 tax credit, which goes directly against what you owe in taxes. So at the end of the year, you owe $5,000 in taxes, you knock that $300 off, and you only owe $4,700.”

Most people do not owed taxes like that. This is all for the wealthy.

A notable exception to the Inflation Reduction Act’s $1,200 annual limit on tax credits is with heat pumps, which you can get $2,000 for. These appliances are supremely powerful tools in fighting climate change: Instead of burning gas like a traditional furnace, they use electricity to extract heat from outdoor air and pump it inside, or extract heat from indoor air and pump it outside. “It’s a really efficient way of moving heat from one place to another,” says Lowell Ungar, director of federal policy at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. “It’s a reversible air conditioner, basically, for when you need to cool the home.”

You spend at least $8000 for the whole installation of a heat pump. You owe $500 in taxes. You now do not owe that $500 and shelled out $7500. Hooray?

Abortions in North Carolina are no longer legal after 20 weeks of pregnancy, a federal judge ruled Wednesday, eroding protections in one of the South’s few remaining safe havens for reproductive freedom.

U.S. District Judge William Osteen reinstated an unenforced 20-week abortion ban, with exceptions for urgent medical emergencies, after he said the June U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade erased the legal foundation for his 2019 ruling that placed an injunction on the 1973 state law.

His decision defies the recommendations of all named parties in the 2019 case, including doctors, district attorneys and the attorney general’s office, who earlier this month filed briefs requesting he let the injunction stand.

“Neither this court, nor the public, nor counsel, nor providers have the right to ignore the rule of law as determined by the Supreme Court,” wrote Osteen, who was appointed to the court by Republican President George W. Bush.

Defied recommendation, eh? What of all the doctors, district attorneys, lawmakers, and citizens who were against it? Regardless, it was a duly passed piece of legislation signed into law by a duly elected governor, which now has more force of law with the Dobbs decision. Seriously, what’s the problem, abortionistas? Around 50% of abortions occur using the abortion pill, which has to be taken by 10 weeks. Certainly, one can figure out within 20 weeks that they do not want the baby, right? That’s almost 5 months. Do the Democrats really want argue for abortion for any reason after 20 weeks?

Osteen’s ruling adds fuel to an already contentious midterm election year after the Supreme Court ruling propelled state-level politics into the spotlight. North Carolina Republicans in November will aim to clinch the five additional seats they need for a veto-proof supermajority in the state legislature as Democrats stave off their challenges to preserve Cooper’s power. In other words, because they simply decided they no longer want the baby, not for actual medical reasons. Only about 6% are to save the life of the mother. And because they might find out the baby has some defects

For those who do choose to undergo such testing, maternal-fetal medicine specialists and genetic counselors usually work closely with the pregnant person or couple to explain in detail what the results mean for a birth, for mother and child, if a genetic disorder or fetal anomaly is detected. These health care providers can also provide the pregnant person or couple with guidance on what options are available to them after a diagnosis, which can include aborting a pregnancy. That option, however, is limited or no longer available to women in many U.S. states.

A senior Eurocrat has called for a “Civil Protection Force” directly under the control of Brussels to be established to fight the impact of climate change.

EU crisis management tsar has called for the creation of a “Civil Protection Force” directly under Brussels control for the ostensive purpose of fighting the impact of climate change.

The suggestion has prompted one MEP to accuse Brussels of “using any excuse to grab more power”, with the union’s green agenda policy having already resulted in chaotic scenes in the likes of the Netherlands.

Some might remember when the European Union was created. Have to go back to the 1950’s, when it was about steel and coal companies banding together for commerce, then some countries establishing tighter political and economic bonds, to bring Europe closer, while each country kept it’s autonomy. And then Brussels kept taking more and more and more power, usurping that of each nation, taking away their sovereignty, with almost no pushback or restraint. Especially over the past 25-30 years

According to a report by POLITICO, crisis management chief Janez Lenarcic has claimed that the impact climate change is having on EU member states is increasing, something which he believes now mandates intervention from Brussels.

“…we have a growing sense that more Europe is needed in civil protection,” Lenarcic said while suggesting that EU treaties should be changed so as to hand Brussels the power to establish such a force that would be able to provide this “protection”.

What could possibly go wrong?

Such a sentiment however has been outright rejected by critics however, with one elected representative within the European Parliament, Cristian Terhes MEP, warning Breitbart Europe that the EU’s “unelected bureaucrats are using any excuse to grab more power”.

“These European bureaucrats are not the solution, but the cause of many problems that the EU is facing, and the deeply damaging energy crisis is just a proof of that,” Terhes said, emphasising that EU bigwigs “don’t want to be accountable to the people”.

“Handing to these irresponsible and unaccountable bureaucrats even more power would just simply be irresponsible,” the European Conservatives and Reformists Group politician continued.

Funny how the elites always want more power going to Government to deal with ‘climate change’, eh? It’s almost like this is political, not a science.

We are giving Medicare the power to negotiate for lower prescription drug prices. Seniors will pay less for their prescription drugs. The law caps their prescription drug out-of-pocket costs at $2,000 a year — no matter how many prescriptions they have. The big drug companies spent nearly $100 million to beat this law. We prevailed.

More BS about government run healthcare and stuff that you’ve already ready about many times. Then the climate scam stuff, which is really just going to hook up the upper upper middle class and rich folks (and China). We get some whining about Republicans, of course. Something about taxing the hell out of corporations and rich folks, who will either pass on the costs or just take their money elsewhere

Third, we demonstrated that government can work for working families.

How West Coast residents should prepare for the threat of a tsunami

When most people hear the word “tsunami,” they may imagine a massive wave, but that’s actually a misconception that researchers in Washington state are trying to correct. Since the state’s coastline is at risk of being hit with a devastating tsunami following an earthquake of magnitude 7.5, the state is trying to educate the public about what it actually would be like.

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources released a wave simulation study in July and shared a bit of startling news: a tsunami in Puget Sound could engulf Seattle’s shoreline, leaving it under more than 20 feet of water within minutes.

Several videos released along with the study illustrate how an earthquake-triggered tsunami would most likely cause water to inundate the coastal areas around Seattle. From land, a tsunami functions and looks more like a storm surge from a hurricane than a tidal wave.

In the U.S. there are over 90 million people living in coastal counties, including more than 30 million on the West Coast. While tsunamis big enough to flood North America are rare, the data from the Washington study concludes that tsunami waves could reach the shoreline in fewer than three minutes in many areas of western Seattle, including parts of Bainbridge Island, Elliott Bay and Alki Point. The tsunami inundation and strong currents have the potential to continue for more than three hours from the start of the earthquake, according to the simulation.

This article is not the only one out there pushing Doom, which, let’s be honest, the news media has to do periodically.

The West Coast is considered to be at a high to very high risk for these phenomena because of tectonic plates that meet in this part of the country. Large earthquakes in these areas can cause the seafloor to rise and spark a tsunami. According to the National Weather Service, the U.S.’s most damaging tsunami was caused by the Great Alaska Earthquake of 1964, which was a magnitude 9.2. A 7.5 earthquake striking in the area is very unlikely in any given year, but it is possible.

The piece spends a lot of paragraphs on tsunamis, how they happen, the damage they can and have caused, but, can you guess why this interested me?

Some scientists and geologists believe climate change plays a role in these potentially devastating disasters, but mostly in Alaska, where melting glaciers are a real threat.

“As global warming continues to thaw glaciers and permafrost, landslide-created tsunamis are emerging as a greater threat — not just in Alaska, but in places like British Columbia and Norway,” said Woods Hole Research Center scientist Anna Liljedahl in a 2020 statement released by the state of Alaska.

How many will think Other People driving fossil fueled vehicles are responsible for earthquake created ones? The ones from thawing, which happens periodically in the Holocene, are localized. Ones like the Indonesian and Japanese tsunamis from the massive earthquakes cover a huge area. The Japanese one sent waves to California. Madagascar got some from the Indonesian. And, yes, the climate cult does link them to ‘climate change’. It’s a cult, not a science.

Surprise: Record Warming In 1954 Doesn’t Disprove Anthropogenic Climate Doom

Nothing can possibly disprove the hypothesis of anthropogenic climate change/global warming, hence, it is a Belief, not a science

Record heat in 1954 does not disprove global warming

Social media posts claim a US heatwave in the summer of 1954 proves global warming is “only an agenda.” This is false; temperatures did break records in the Midwest that year, but experts say isolated weather events do not disprove the science of climate change, which has made heatwaves more frequent and intense.

“There was no ‘GLOBAL WARMING’ or ‘CLIMATE CHANGE’ agenda in 1954. The current rhetoric is only an agenda about power control and wealth redistribution,” says a July 28, 2022 Facebook post, which includes a photo of a newspaper article. “Stories like this are part of the reason they have backed off teaching history in public schools.”

Similar claims have circulated on Twitter here and here. As evidence, the posts cite a July 16, 2022 column in The Joplin Globe, a daily newspaper in Missouri.

“As hot as it is this summer, 1954 was so much worse,” the headline says.

But the posts misinterpret the article, which does not mention climate change. And scientists say global warming is making heatwaves more frequent and intense.

“No individual heat wave can prove or disprove global warming,” said Maren Hale, a climate researcher at the University of California-San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Except, the same people are proclaiming that the current heat waves in the Northern Hemisphere are being caused by/made worse by ‘climate change’, just like they say every time there is one. Meanwhile, in the Southern Hemisphere, they are cold and wet.

In the column shared online, historian Brad Belk of Missouri Southern State University recalled his experience of summer 1954.

Belk is not a scientist and did not express opinions related to climate change. Instead, he mentioned the heatwave’s consequences on the local population and infrastructure.

Biden is not a scientist. Nor is Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Barack Obama, Al Gore, Bill Nye, or so many others, yet, we’re supposed to listen to them. ‘Climate change’ and global warming were not concerns back in 1954, people had more common sense and weren’t captured by a doomsday cult. It was just weather. These cultists will accept no data, no facts, nothing, because it is a Belief.

Here Are 4 Ways The IRA Will Kick In Immediately

The signing Tuesday of the Inflation Reduction Act is set to kick off a parade of action from the Biden administration and other Democrats to sell the bill to the public. While some analysis shows it won’t meaningfully reduce inflation, the so-called IRA will devote hundreds of billions of dollars toward fighting climate change, reducing prescription drug costs, and cutting the deficit.

President Joe Biden and others will fan out around the U.S. in the coming weeks to discuss the bill, according to the White House — with Cabinet members traveling to 23 states just this month.

The coming Democratic message will likely focus on the aspects of the bill that could improve Americans’ lives immediately — including tax credits for electric vehicles and energy-efficient home improvements and key health care provisions.

Strange, they won’t be discussing how it can reduce inflation that is harming the working and middle classes? About how it will bring down food prices?

Here are the ways that the bill could be felt by November’s midterm elections — and what will take years.

  • Tax credits for energy related home improvements (if you can afford it, what with prices going up on all that stuff, and whether you actually need it. It will probably increase inflation as market forces cause prices to go up)
  • Expanded EV tax credits (great for the upper middle class and up. The majority of EV buyers make at least $150k-$200K a year. It won’t reduce inflation)
  • Health care changes (while it’s great to cap Insulin to $35 a month, that’s only for Medicare. And more government money for Obamacare, while the rest of us have to pay full boat. It won’t help inflation)
  • Oil drilling provisions (Who’s actually expecting Biden and the bureaucrats to allow this to actually happen? This is the one thing that could decrease inflation, but, it wouldn’t be soon, and, it won’t be allowed to happen)

So, really, nothing that helps the middle and working classes

In total, the bill is not expected to have a sizable impact on inflation. The Penn Wharton Budget Model recently predicted that the effort would slightly increase inflation until 2024 and then decrease it afterwards. Other studies have found modest deflation as a result of the bill.

It’s not clear whether the IRA will help Democrats during the midterm elections in November, though the president is projecting optimism. Biden recently said he expected it to help Democrats’ political fortunes because even the parts that are “not going to kick in for a little bit” will still be “really game-changing for ordinary folks.”

Is game changing now meant to denote “raise your cost of living and force you to purchase things you don’t want and can’t really afford”?
