Whoa! I Barely Recognize Parts Of The Jersey Shore Post Sandy

I grew up in a little town called Brielle. I spent lots and lots of time in Manasquan, especially at the beach. Without a caption, I wouldn’t even been able to tell you where this was in Manasquan (pics via The Star Ledger and Andrew Mills, with many more)

For those in the know, that is the corner of 1st Ave. and Brielle Road. The thing about the Jersey shore is you have the beach, which rises up to a berm of maybe 5-10 feet above sea level, and there might be a boardwalk, then it often drops down a few feet. And from Manasquan down, you have the Intracoastal Waterway, with all these “barrier islands”, which means a double whammy for any beach towns as the bays and ocean rise. Plus, getting towns which are not much above sea level further inland.

Liberals So Stressed By Election That They Can’t Exercise Or Sleep

Funny stuff, via Mary Katherine Hamm

(San Fran Chronicle) There’s no shortage of their kind in the politically bluest parts of California. Liberals so freaked out about the prospect of President Obama losing his re-election bid that they can’t sleep at night. Can’t talk about anything else. Can’t stop parsing the latest polls.

For the past several weeks, the 60-year-old San Francisco resident has frequently bolted awake in the middle of the night, in “a panic attack,” she said. She darts for her computer and checks the latest polls. Some days she’s so distraught that she can’t exercise.

Every morning, she gets e-mails from friends who’ve been just as sleepless. Most are so tense, they can croak out only a few words. “Very anxious.” “Worried.”

It’s a good time to be a mental health professional, especially if Obama loses. But, um, er, after Bush won re-election in 2004, there were quite a few mental health professionals who suffered PEST (post election stress syndrome) themselves. Will we get another round of liberals unable to get out of bed and go to work (or unable to spend lots of time looking for and applying for jobs in this pitiful Obameconomy)?

Anyhow, these same San Fran liberals were freaking out after the first debate, and it just got worse for them

Then Obama started dropping in the polls.

“Oh my God,” Ikels said. “I didn’t really start paying serious attention to the race until then. All the Republicans were tearing each other up during the primaries and they were all looking insane, so I thought (Obama) would be all right.”

I suspect this is an attitude common throughout Liberal World. And certainly Republicans are, as MKH points out, are “not immune to worry over the election or the fate of the country”, but I’m not losing sleep or too stressed to hit the gym every day I can. And, if I wake up and Obama is the winner, I won’t mope around for weeks. I’ll just get right back to work attempting to stop his far left agenda, as will most Republicans. Liberals take politics entirely too personally.

Obama To Sandy Victims: “We Leave Nobody Behind”

Obama was out trying to “look” presidential yesterday in the wake of Sandy, and I caught this

The whole “hey, look, I’m acting presidential” speech was even worse, and he said:

(Breitbart) This is a tough time for a lot of people; millions of folks all across the Eastern Seaboard, but America’s tougher. And we’re tougher because we pull together, we leave nobody behind, we make sure we respond as a nation and remind ourselves that whenever an American is in need, all of us stand together to make sure we’re providing the help that’s necessary.

As John Nolte writes

That’s a beautiful sentiment, Mr. President, but where was it when the cameras weren’t rolling; when your government heard three plaintive pleas for assistance from Americans under attack and with help reportedly close enough to make a difference?

John points out that it is an interesting study in reactions, one where Obama is appearing as engaged and has suspended his campaign, the other where he tuned out and hit the campaign trail to head to Vegas. It begs the question “why did the Obama administration act in that fashion post-Benghazi?” Obama could have come out smelling like a rose had he sent in forces to rescue our people in Benghazi and come out strong against this terrorist attack. Instead, people are now wonder exactly what was going on that caused the administration to leave Americans to die.

The White House Flickr stream has a bunch of photos of Obama “looking concerned” over Sandy (such as this one), but nothing from September 11 when our people were under assault.

Nice Deb is not impressed by Obama’s words, nor is the PJ Tattler and The Gateway Pundit. I’m sure there will be plenty of photos of Obama “looking presidential” coming soon to be even more not impressed by.

Good News! FEMA, White House Send Storm Victims To Internet

Figured we should just get it out of the way

(Politico) When President Barack Obama urged Americans under siege from Hurricane Sandy to stay inside and keep watch on ready.gov for the latest, he left out something pretty important — where to turn if the electricity goes out.

Despite the heightened expectation of widespread power and cable television failures, everyone from the president to local newscasters seem to expect the public to rely entirely on the Internet and their TVs for vital news and instructions.

Kinda difficult when the power is, you know, out. And, hey, thanks to that wonderful Central Government idea of switching to all digital broadcasts (can’t blame this one on Obama), you can’t get TV over the air anymore (I learned this first hand when the power was out for a day after the tornado came through Raleigh in 2011. Have a 2 1/2 battery operated TV). It might have made a bit more sense to tell people to purchase battery operated radios (I have a couple myself).

Internet? Good luck with that. No power. Using mobile phone? Once the battery backups go on the towers, forget it.

#Fail.

Surprise! NY Times Calls For Big Government For A Big Storm

I know, I know, you’re shocked! Here comes the NY Times (unnamed) editorial board with the “sense of the paper”

Most Americans have never heard of the National Response Coordination Center, but they’re lucky it exists on days of lethal winds and flood tides. The center is the war room of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, where officials gather to decide where rescuers should go, where drinking water should be shipped, and how to assist hospitals that have to evacuate.

Damn, what would those poor little States and municipalities do without the helping hand of people who…..don’t live near the affected areas, don’t know the people, don’t know the landscape. We must have even more Central Planning!

Disaster coordination is one of the most vital functions of “big government,” which is why Mitt Romney wants to eliminate it. At a Republican primary debate last year, Mr. Romney was asked whether emergency management was a function that should be returned to the states. He not only agreed, he went further.

Legal Insurrection points out that this is a complete strawman, a gross misrepresentation of what Mitt was saying.

It’s an absurd notion, but it’s fully in line with decades of Republican resistance to federal emergency planning. FEMA, created by President Jimmy Carter, was elevated to cabinet rank in the Bill Clinton administration, but was then demoted by President George W. Bush, who neglected it, subsumed it into the Department of Homeland Security, and placed it in the control of political hacks. The disaster of Hurricane Katrina was just waiting to happen.

But, hoorary, Obama rescued it!!!!!!1!!!!! Oh, BTW, perhaps if the Democrat mayor of New Orleans had ordered an evacuation earlier, and followed the evacuation plan, there would have been less problems. Other states, hit just as hard, didn’t have the same issues, especially since so many in New Orleans were products of government dependence and were unable to help themselves.

Over the last two years, Congressional Republicans have forced a 43 percent reduction in the primary FEMA grants that pay for disaster preparedness.

Good thing the NY Times isn’t politicizing a disaster. They were, and are, pretty darned upset over what they deemed as Republicans politicizing Obama leaving Americans to die in Benghazi.

Is FEMA necessary? Yes, it is a good agency designed to coordinate relief as it comes from multiple states. That is a good role for the federal government. But, what it mostly does is pump taxpayer money into these areas, often based on political considerations. Most of the time, States, counties, and municipalities can get by doing it on their own, and, really, the manpower comes from within.

Back in 1999, North Carolina was hit by two storms in close proximity, Dennis and Floyd. The Governor of NC, James Hunt (Democrat) did not rely on FEMA to deal with the aftermath, which was massive flooding of a good chunk of eastern NC. He relied mostly on our own resources. And did an awesome job.

What the Times is positioning here is that Republicans want to do away with all government. That’s a load of mule fritters. We understand that there are times for the Central Government to do a job. And then get the hell out of our lives. Most things can be done in the states. And should be.

Obama To Morning Joe: “#1 Priority Was To Secure Americans..”

Well, you failed completely, champ.

(The Blaze) President Barack Obama during a taped interview with MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Monday refused to answer pointed questions regarding the recent attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. Instead, he offered boilerplate assurances that a White House investigation will explain everything. (snip)

“Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough followed up Brzezinski’s softball question with something a little more hard-hitting: “Was it the intel community giving you bad information early on? The stories keep changing.”

(Obama said) The truth is, is that across the board, when this happened, my number one priority was to secure Americans, figure out what happened, bring those folks to justice. We are in the process of doing that right now.

Congress has been getting the flow of information continuously from day one. And what my attitude on this is, is if we find out that there has a big breakdown and somebody didn’t do their job, they’ll be held accountable.

Ultimately, as commander in chief, I’m responsible, and I don’t shy away from that responsibility. My number one responsibility is to go after folks who did this and we’re going to make sure that we get them. I’ve got a pretty good track record doing that.

Yet, someone gave the order to “stand down”. Someone failed to send in military units to protect and save our people, including our Ambassador. That was your responsibility, Mr. Obama. You failed. You didn’t even try.

Oh, and they aren’t “folks”, Mr. Obama”: they’re terrorists, murderous scum, Islamic jihadis.

Allahpundit notes that Obama is trying to play the victim and “took offense” at Mika’s initial question. Also,

If, as he claimed on Friday, he really did issue an order to secure American personnel in Benghazi, show us the order.

Correct, show us the order. But, he won’t. Because there surely is no written order to Do Something, and probably no audio of Obama telling anyone to Do Something to save our people. Senator McCain made it clear on Sunday

You know, this administration is very good at touting and giving all the details like when they got Bin Laden. But now, we know that there were tapes, recordings inside the consulate during this fight, and they’ve gotten—they came—the F.B.I. finally got in and took those, and now they’re classified as “top secret.” Why would they be top secret? So the president went on various shows, despite what he said he said in the Rose Garden, about terrorist acts, he went on several programs, including “The View” including “Letterman” including before the U.N., where he continued to refer, days later, many days later, to this as a spontaneous demonstration because of a hateful video. We know that is patently false. What did the president know? When did he know it? And what did he do about it?

Bingo! When Osama was whacked, Team Obama could wait to trot out every bit of information, including info that should have remained secret. With Benghazi, there are stonewalls, hiding information, coverups, and a refusal to accurately discuss what happened.

NPR: Is Sandy Climate Change Or Warmist Hysteria?

Via Ed Driscoll, who writes

If NPR really believes that, it’s up to them to set an example for the rest of America by voluntarily shutting down their stations and Websites, in order to help save Gaia. Or as the Professor likes to say, I’ll believe there’s a crisis, when the people who tell me it’s a crisis start to act like it’s a crisis themselves.

They won’t. Because it’s not about slowing or even stopping the “planet’s fever”. It might have been for about 3 days, but, ever since it has been about increasing the power, size, scope, and revenue intake of the Central Government, while controlling people, businesses, States, and the economy

Frankenstorm: Has Climate Change Created A Monster?

No, you schmuck. Even the NY Times’ resident Warmist, Andrew Revkin (who refuses to give up his unnecessary fossil fueled life) says “just stop. We do not know.”

The hyper-charged political landscape we are crossing now creates its own sparks when trying to answer that question. In a world looking for “wake-up calls” and “smoking guns,” how do scientists address the thorny issue of attribution? Did anthropogenic climate change cause the storm that rained out your picnic yesterday? Is it causing the terrifying storm crawling up the East Coast now? There are deep, powerful and potent issues here that touch on both science and the relationship between science and politics.

Let’s start with the science.

For years, most climate scientists would say it’s impossible to link an individual weather event with climate change. That, in fact, is the difference between weather and climate. Climate is all about long-term trends — not the 5-day forecast.

Recently, however, some researchers have taken the issue of attribution seriously. Using a variety of techniques, they are attempting to quantify the role human-driven climate change plays in particular events. This is science at the bleeding edge, where framing their questions correctly so that they might lead to meaningful answers is still a hot issue.

This more resembles carnival palm reading prognostication than science. With all due respect to carnival palm readers, who mostly know they are just playing a part. It’s about wishing and hoping that what the “climate scientists” and computer models say is correct, with no actual way to prove it. Even if the next 5-10 years have this happening every year, there would still be no way to prove what’s happening is anthropogenic due to greenhouse gas output instead of simply natural (there is some observable as well as anecdotal evidence that the Urban Heat Island Effect contributes to local weather patterns). But, wait, the author, Adam Frank, hedges his bets

So how about the Frankenstorm?

Here the waters get muddied. There is a hierarchy of weather events which scientists feel they understand well enough for establishing climate change links. Global temperature rises and extreme heat rank high on that list, but Hurricanes rank low. As the IPCC special report on extreme events put it “There is low confidence in any observed long-term (i.e., 40 years or more) increases in tropical cyclone activity (i.e., intensity, frequency, duration), after accounting for past changes in observing capabilities.”

Then Adam tries to skirt around the issue, and sorta kinda provide a reasoning that Sandy was possibly maybe caused by the Warmists notion of hotcoldwetdry. Ugh. Loony tunes. This is not science. And, it doesn’t seem that Sandy was actually a hurricane when it hit the Jersey Shore

That’s the data from buoy station CMAN4 at the southern tip of New Jersey, the closest buoy to landfall (The ones near Atlantic City were either not reporting or do not report wind speed. I’m actually surprised there are so few buoys along the Jersey shore). Notice the highest continuous wind speed is 52.1kts. That’s 59.96 mph. Minimum hurricane speed is 74mph.

Notice, these are gusts, not winds. And there was tons more data like this from multiple source.

It begs the question, why was Sandy over-hyped? One reason is that people won’t check. Another is that so many in the media are believers in hotcoldwetdry. Some might have been giving Obama a chance to “look presidential”. And, also because the media likes to go overboard (the NYSE smacked CNN around after CNN claimed there was 3 feet of water on the Exchange floor).

The thing is, there was no need to over-do it. Regardless of what caused Sandy, it was, and still is, a big damned storm with a huge wind field, lots of rain, and was pushing a huge storm surge. And even a tropical system is damned dangerous. Of course, saying it is a tropical storm doesn’t have the same impact on people as saying it’s a hurricane. Until someone lives through one. I’ve been through many. Fran caused massive damage here in the Raleigh, NC area back in 96, and it was a strong TS went it blew through.

My parents lost power in Southern NJ around 430pm. They lost wired phone service around 8pm, and you know things are bad when home phone service goes out. It’s typically the service that lasts the best.

Millions and millions are without power. Lots of flooding, lots of storm surge. Sand blown out onto the roads. Trees down. Property damaged. Trees taking out the power lines and poles. Boardwalks destroyed. People killed.

It’s not anthropogenic global warming: it’s simply what the processes of the Earth do.

No, I Don’t Think Gays Are To Blame For Hurricane Sandy

From John McTernan’s blog

If you add the area of the drought and now the hurricane together, it would be about 80 percent of the country! As I said, the Holy God of Israel is systematically destroying America right before our eyes.

Just last August, Hurricane Isaac hit New Orleans seven years later, on the exact day of Hurricane Katrina. Both hit during the week of the homosexual event called Southern Decadence in New Orleans!

Someone emailed me for comment on this story after seeing my “Sandy is not globull warming” posts. I don’t blame gays. I don’t think this is God’s hand at work taking retribution for America’s decedent ways or plans to divide Israel. While I certainly believe in God, these storms have been happening for a long, long time every now and then.

Now, If the dead start walking the earth……

GOP To Hold 30-33 Governor Seats?

The UK Mail points out some interesting information

Republicans are in position to extend their recent gains among governors as they compete for seats they haven’t won in a quarter-century.

Of the 11 states with gubernatorial elections in November, eight are now led by Democrats, and each of the most competitive races is a GOP pickup opportunity.

The numbers suggests that Republicans soon will claim 30 to 33 governorships after holding just 22 a few years ago – an advantage not reflected in the divided Congress or competitive presidential race.

That could be pretty big in pushing a Republican agenda at the State level, and let’s not forget that some states with Democrat governors, such as North Carolina, refused to participate in the lawsuits against Obamacare. And can block implementation of Obamacare. And can block far left liberals in when they control the state legislatures.

Remember, 2010 wasn’t just about the GOP’s historic reclaiming of the US House: the GOP did pretty damned well on a state level.
