Surprise: Obama Pushes Gun Control In Weekly Address

Fortunately, we can expect his push to have a short shelf life

(The Hill) President Obama on Saturday called on Congress to act on his gun-control proposals.

In his weekly address, the president said his administration has taken several steps this week to reduce gun violence. But lawmakers on Capitol Hill need to pass legislation to help prevent mass shootings like the tragedy that occurred in Newtown, Connecticut, according to Obama.

If only someone would pass a law making murder illegal.

“My administration is taking a series of actions right away — from strengthening our background check system, to helping schools hire more resource officers if they want them, to directing the Centers for Disease Control to study the best ways to reduce gun violence,” Obama said. “But the truth is, making a real and lasting difference also requires Congress to act — and act soon.”

In other words, Obama’s done his job in laying out a series of sentences on a sticky note, now others have to do the actual work while he agitates.

And in the weeks ahead, I will do everything in my power to make them a reality. Because while we may not be able to prevent every senseless act of violence in this country, if there is even one thing we can do to reduce it – if even one life can be saved – we’ve got an obligation to try.

If the 2nd sentence is anything like his promises to focus like a laser on the economy, he’ll drop this subject in short order. As for the 3rd, we could save at least one life by banning cars. And hammers. And knifes. Bathtubs. Airplanes. Hands.

Second, Congress should restore a ban on military-style assault weapons, and a 10-round limit for magazines. Many assault rifles, when combined with high-capacity magazines, have one purpose and one purpose only: to fire as many bullets as possible as quickly as possible. These weapons have no place in our communities. And a majority of the American people agree with me.

Spoken like a true uniformed politician. These weapons are, for the most part, simply scary looking versions of other weapons. The difference between a Bushmaster .223, used in the Newtown shooting, and a Vepr Pioneer, is only in how the look, not in how they work. And why 10? Why is that a magic number?

Finally, Congress needs to make it easier, rather than harder, for law enforcement to do its job. We should get tougher on people who buy guns only to turn around and sell them to criminals. And at a time when many communities have been forced to make cuts to their police force, we should put more cops back on the job and back on the street.

Someone should make it harder for Obama admin agencies to walk guns across the border into Mexico without the knowledge of Mexico’s government, with no plan to track the 2400 guns, which resulted in well over 200 deaths, including children.

While I certainly respect the police, their job isn’t necessarily to be there to stop crime, but to catch criminals. Chicago has lots of cops. But, the legal citizens are disarmed. Hence, well over 500 murders this year. And Obama’s proposals tend to target law abiding citizens, not the crazies and criminals that kill.

Oops: Hansen Admits To Global Temperature Standstill

That’s gotta hurt, admitting what all of us who deal with the reality of the climate know

(GWPF) The GWPF has been right all along. In a new report Hansen, Sato and Ruedy (2013) acknowledge the existence of a standstill in global temperature lasting a decade.

This is a welcome contribution to the study of global temperature. When others reached the same conclusion they have been ridiculed; so this admission should provide some pause for reflection by those who have attacked the very idea of a recent temperature standstill, often without understanding the data, focusing on who was making the argument and their alleged non-scientific motives.

According to Hansen et al. the Nasa Giss database has 2012 as the ninth warmest year on record, although statistically indistinguishable from the last 12 years, at least. Noaa says it’s the tenth warmest year. The difference is irrelevant.

And the difference, along with being any “warmest year”, doesn’t determine causation.

Texas AG Invites New Yorkers To Come On Down

New Yorkers wouldn’t have to worry about violating the law if they mistakenly put 8 bullets in the magazine (via The Lonely Conservative)

(Reuters) (Greg) Abbott, a possible candidate for governor of Texas in next year’s election, used campaign money to buy ads on websites of news organizations in New York City and Albany.

One ad says in classic Western script: “WANTED: Law abiding New York gun owners seeking lower taxes and greater opportunities.”

Clicking on the ad leads to a Facebook page touting the virtues of Texas, including the fact that the state has no income tax so “you’ll be able to keep more of what you earn and use that extra money to buy more ammo.”

Abbott told Reuters the ads are a “way to tweak our liberal friends up in the Northeast.”

“It is tongue in cheek, but there is a deeper message here,” he said. “Texas really does stand as the last bastion of ultimate freedom in this country. Over the last decade, more than 4 million people moved to this state, and one reason is freedom and one reason is economic opportunity.”

Let’s not forget that the fools who wrote, and voted for, the NY gun law forgot to exempt the police from the 7 rounds restriction, and now have to go back and fix that.

Paper: “Climatic changes measured during the last 100 years are not unique or even unusual”

Yet another nail in the coffin of the climate astrologers, who we all know will fail to answer with science but instead will stick with their own cult like dogma while attacking the messenger and demonizing those who wrote the paper

(The Hockey Schtick) A paper titled “Global Warming: A Geological Perspective,” published in Environmental Geosciences, and summarized below in Arizona Geology, should be required reading for all climate scientists. The paper notes that if

“the temperature increase during the past 130 years reflects recovery from the Little Ice Age, it is not unreasonable to expect the temperature to rise another 2 to 2.5 degrees Celsius to a level comparable to that of the Medieval Warm Period about 800 years ago”

and that

“Climatic changes measured during the last 100 years are not unique or even unusual when compared with the frequency, rate, and magnitude of changes that have taken place since the beginning of the Holocene Epoch. Recent fluctuations in temperature, both upward and downward, are well within the limits observed in nature prior to human influence.”

Sadly, most climate scientists fail to study or understand the geologic history of climate, which has led to countless false claims that today’s climate is unnatural, extreme, unusual, or unprecedented.

Warmists will, of course, provide their usual answer, namely that those were in the past, and that today’s warm period is completely different because cough mumble cough and because Someone told them, before switching to personal attacks because Warmists fail to comprehend science nor can they explain why the previous warm periods during this inter-glacial have been much warmer than it is today. Then they’ll jump in their fossil fueled SUVs and minivans to run off and attend an anti-fracking demonstration. Or protest against actual construction of a wind farm near where they live.

Obama’s Neverending Campaign To Continue In Order To Take On NRA

If there is one thing nice we can say about (NMP) Obama, it’s that he runs an excellent campaign apparatus. Governance? Respect for Americans who disagree with him? Foreign relations? Adherence to the Constitution? Not so much. Campaigning and ginning up crazies to get out there? Yes. And lying liar Stephanie Cutter tells us about it in video at Real Clear Politics

STEPHANIE CUTTER: President Obama provides the leadership here, and he said the American people have to speak up and make their voices heard in this debate. Just like the NRA is doing with there membership. And President Obama’s network across this country, grassroots individuals, who organize, volunteered with their time to get the president reelected are much more powerful than the NRA lobby.

And I think that you can expect to see that network activated, very soon. And for good reason. We need to pass commonsense legislation to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and those who shouldn’t be carrying guns. That’s the commonsense nature of this.

So instead of a national discussion, we’ll see a typical Obama campaign of fear and demonization, of abusing and smearing the NRA and Americans who support that pesky 2nd Amendment, not to mention the 4th, 5th, and 9th.

In fact, Obama looks to continue the neverending campaign for everything

In an unprecedented move, President Barack Obama’s vaunted political organization is being turned into a nonprofit group — funded in part by corporate money — to mobilize support behind the president’s second-term agenda.

Democratic officials familiar with the plan said Thursday the tax-exempt organization will be called Organizing for Action and seek to harness the energy of the president’s re-election campaign for future legislative fights. Officials said the group will be separate from the Democratic National Committee and advocate on key policy issues such as gun control and immigration, train future leaders and devote attention to local issues around the nation.

Perhaps Ted Cruz is correct that Obama is “drunk on power.” It’d be nice if he got his facts straight, such as his mule fritters assertion about 40% not obtaining a background check to purchase a handgun, but facts matter little when Obama is reaching for an issue and Americans to abuse.

Cost Of Energy From Heat Induced Cold Causing Tree Theft In Germany

Also, because the idiots in the Central Planning Office have enacted legislation relying on barely workable and really expensive alternatives (via Tom Nelson)

(Spiegel) With energy costs escalating, more Germans are turning to wood burning stoves for heat. That, though, has also led to a rise in tree theft in the country’s forests. Woodsmen have become more watchful.

With snow blanketing the ground, it’s the perfect time of year to snuggle up in front of a fireplace. That, though, makes German foresters nervous. When the mercury falls, the theft of wood in the country’s woodlands goes up as people turn to cheaper ways to heat their homes.

The problem has been compounded this winter by rising energy costs. The Germany’s Renters Association estimates the heating costs will go up 22 percent this winter alone. A side effect is an increasing number of people turning to wood-burning stoves for warmth. Germans bought 400,000 such stoves in 2011, the German magazine FOCUS reported this week. It marks the continuation of a trend: The number of Germans buying heating devices that burn wood and coal has grown steadily since 2005, according to consumer research company GfK Group.

It’s gotten so bad that some are actually putting GPS on their trees. This wouldn’t be happening if you would just give up your fossil fueled vehicle and your freedom.

NY Criminalizes Firearm Ownership

This is what happens when you have hardcore Leftists in charge and no one reads the legislation (via Steven Goddard)

3. § 265.01 Criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.
A person is guilty of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree when:
(1) He or she possesses any firearm, electronic dart gun, electronic stun gun, gravity knife, switchblade knife, pilum ballistic knife, metal knuckle knife, cane sword, billy, blackjack, bludgeon, plastic knuckles, metal knuckles, chuka stick, sand bag, sandclub, wrist-brace type sling- shot or slungshot, shirken or “Kung Fu star”; or

This is from page 21 of S2230 starting on line 3 (I’ve cleaned it up a bit), and makes possession of any of those weapons, including any gun, a misdemeanor. Reading through the rest, there is no clause which makes a determination for specific ownership, meaning that any ownership of a firearm, no matter what type it is, no matter who possesses it, is criminal.

And, on page 22 it states that anyone who lawfully possessed a firearm prior to passage of this bill and fails to register it is in criminal violation, which is a class E felony. I would assume this applies to guns other than handguns, which did not need to be registered beforehand. But, they can’t legally posses those in the first place, per 265.01.

If someone wants to read through the legislation and find where I’m wrong, go for it. I can’t find anything that invalidates the notion that possession of a firearm is now illegal.

They’ve also made it a misdemeanor if you have more than 7 bullets in a magazine. Which is moot, since you aren’t allowed to legally possess a firearm in the first place.

Also, notice that they took away the ability for people to carry any sort of stun gun. Sorry, ladies, if someone wants to rape you, you can’t fight back. Just submit.

Climate Astrology: National Geographic Links Snow And Cold To Globull Warming

If only there was something National Geographic could do to solve this, like not sending teams all around the world using fossil fuels to create programs

Here we go again. The weather’s going to extremes: a snowstorm in Jerusalem, wildfires in Australia, a cold snap in China, a heat wave in Brazil. Based on the first two weeks of the new year, 2013’s picking up right where 2012 left off.

They do realize that it is summer in Australia and Brazil, right? And winter in China and Jerusalem?

As much as 8 inches (20 centimeters) of snow fell on Jerusalem (map) last Thursday, closing roads across the city. It was the biggest winter storm there in 20 years. Scores of trees fell from the weight of the snow, snowball fights broke out in the parks, and Israeli President Shimon Peres was photographed building a snowman outside his residence with help from his bodyguards.

In China, the average temperature fell to 25°F (-4°C) in early January, the lowest in nearly three decades. More than a thousand ships in China’s Laizhou Bay (map) have been frozen into the ice.

National Geographic calls this “the new normal”. I call this bat guano crazy and climate astrology, whereby every weather event is linked to greenhouse gases, even cold and snow. It’s pure idiocy and completely unrelated to actual science. Even if anthropogenic global warming was real, it is not going to cause cold and snow. Only in the warped minds of dogmatic progressives hell bent on pushing their pet cult could warm cause cold.

Oh, and for those who want to discuss 2012 being the hottest since the end of the end of the Little Ice Age (well, after quite a bit of data manipulation. They haven’t deigned to release the raw data), even the Warmists at Grist notice something

Again, just to make the point: The hottest year in American history was one of the coldest worldwide this century.

Yes, yes, we’re talking about this century. And world wide temperatures are up from the end of the LIA (shocker!), because, the Earth is in the midst of a warm period. But, overall, if you want to focus on America, the raw data shows that the 1930’s, before CO2 was above 350ppm, was much warmer than this century.

If you Warmists are really concerned, you will go completely carbon neutral in your own lives. Act like it’s a crisis. You won’t.
