It’s Kinda Hard For The House To Vote On Senate Amnesty Bill When Harry Reid Won’t Send It Over

I wonder why?

(Washington Times) The immigration bill passed the Senate more than a month ago but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is refusing to send the bill to the House — just one of the hurdles that has sapped momentum and dimmed the chances for an immigration deal this year.

The White House on Monday held onto an optimistic outlook.

“I won’t deny that we would be perfectly happy for the House of Representatives to pass that bipartisan legislation today and have a signing ceremony at the end of the week. I don’t anticipate that’s going to happen,” deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said. “But I do think that there’s pretty strong momentum built up behind this piece of legislation.”

Has anyone alerted Reid and Earnest that the House can’t vote on Bills they haven’t received? Well, legally and Constitutionally. I’m sure Democrats don’t care about that notion.

House GOP leadership offices said they haven’t spoken with Mr. Reid about the holdup, but some lawmakers say he is trying to avoid the embarrassment of a defeat.

Boehner said it wouldn’t get a vote. There’s also concern because it is potentially unconstitutional, since it raises revenue. But, consider, if Reid sent it over, Democrats and Obama could demagogue the GOP for refusing to give it an up or down vote (they’re kinda doing it anyway). So why refuse to send it to the House? Perhaps Reid is worried that it will get a vote that defeats the Bill, with many Democrats voting against it. Many House Dems are against the border provisions.

Seeking to rebuild support, the White House said Mr. Obama will use August, when Congress is out of town, to push for an immigration deal.

“I think that momentum is only building. And we’ll see how House Republicans respond to that pressure,” Mr. Earnest said.

Obama can’t demagogue, or at least as much, if the House had already voted on it. The least Republicans could do would be to make sure everyone knows that Reid refuses to send the Bill over to the House.

Bummer: NC Blowing Off “Climate Change”

Democrats are pissed, but, hey, they lost the General Assembly because people were tired of Dem policies, among others

(News And Record) After initiating some of the country’s earliest state-sponsored research and response to climate change, the legislature has all but dropped the issue. The state agency that once identified climate change adaptation as a key goal says it’s no longer a focus.

Virtually all of the Hotcoldwetdry actions, studies, committees, etc have been axed. The giant 2008 study with almost 50 recommendations (higher taxes, more control of people and businesses, lots of pork and kickbacks to Dem campaign contributors) has been completely ignored. Awesome!

I love this part

“They’ve messed with Jordan Lake rules, said local governments can’t enact anything stricter than federal standards. They eliminated buffer requirements, weakened water standards, repealed clean-energy codes for commercial buildings,” Harrison said. “It runs the gamut. These are wide-reaching public health and environmental rollbacks.”

Wait, I thought Dems didn’t like when states enacted legislation that is stronger than federal? Wasn’t Arizona sued over that very thing?

Anyhow, the Warmists are all concerned about Bad Weather, which had never occurred in North Carolina before.

And, yeah, Dems are still whining about NC losing its “progressive” cred. Elections have consequences.

Detroit Looks To Use Obamacare To Deal With Its Debt

Another reason to hate Obamacare, as Detroit shifts its debt from itself and all the untenable promises it made onto the bulk of the American taxpayer

(NY Times) As Detroit enters the federal bankruptcy process, the city is proposing a controversial plan for paring some of the $5.7 billion it owes in retiree health costs: pushing many of those too young to qualify for Medicare out of city-run coverage and into the new insurance markets that will soon be operating under the Obama health care law.

Officials say the plan would be part of a broader effort to save Detroit tens of millions of dollars in health costs each year, a major element in a restructuring package that must be approved by a bankruptcy judge. It is being watched closely by municipal leaders around the nation, many of whom complain of mounting, unsustainable prices for the health care promised to retired city workers.

Similar proposals that could shift public sector retirees into the new insurance markets, called exchanges, are already being planned or contemplated in places like Chicago; Sheboygan County, Wis.; and Stockton, Calif. While large employers that eliminate health benefits for full-time workers can be penalized under the health care law, retirees are a different matter.

Promises shmomises. Nothing like pushing Detroit’s promises onto Other People while giving them substandard treatment. The article also notes that many municipalities with similar problems may do the same, meaning more and more people will be subsidized by the Federal government, or, really, the 53% who actually have a federal tax burden. Good thing that if you like your plan you can’t keep it, eh?

Natural Gas Is A Gangplank To Boiling The Earth Or Something

Gangplank to a Warm Future

It should be noted that Mankind has done best in warmer climates. Heck, one of the previous cool period was called “The Dark Ages”.

MANY concerned about climate change, including President Obama, have embraced hydraulic fracturing for natural gas. In his recent climate speech, the president went so far as to lump gas with renewables as “clean energy.”

First, if you call it “climate change”, you’re interested in politics, not science. Second, mentioning a guy with the largest “carbon footprint” in the world to push your un-scientific notions might not be the best idea.

As a longtime oil and gas engineer who helped develop shale fracking techniques for the Energy Department, I can assure you that this gas is not “clean.” Because of leaks of methane, the main component of natural gas, the gas extracted from shale deposits is not a “bridge” to a renewable energy future — it’s a gangplank to more warming and away from clean energy investments.

Methane is a far more powerful greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, though it doesn’t last nearly as long in the atmosphere. Still, over a 20-year period, one pound of it traps as much heat as at least 72 pounds of carbon dioxide. Its potency declines, but even after a century, it is at least 25 times as powerful as carbon dioxide. When burned, natural gas emits half the carbon dioxide of coal, but methane leakage eviscerates this advantage because of its heat-trapping power.

I’ll admit, Mr. Ingraffea has a point: methane is a considerably more potent greenhouse gas than CO2, though it’s atmospheric lifespan is shorter. What we’ve seen in actual science reports, and even in UN IPCC reports, is that the two biggest contributors from Mankind for GHGs are landfills and agriculture. Which are mostly about methane. Yes, we do need to be careful as to leaking methane into the atmosphere, and, remember, every time I mention that a small part of this warm period can be blamed on Mankind, part of that revolves are methane. The other part of that small part is the urban heat island effect/land usage.

The scientific community has been waiting for better data from the E.P.A. to assess the extent of the water contamination problem. That is why it is so discouraging that, in the face of industry complaints, the E.P.A. reportedly has closed or backed away from several investigations into the problem. Perhaps a full E.P.A. study of hydraulic fracturing and drinking water, due in 2014, will be more forthcoming.

Mr. Ingraffea jump from methane to notions that fracking is bad for the environment, especially ground water, yet, every EPA and other study says “nope, no issues with fracking”. But, every “climate change” issue must be magnified, spun, hid, massaged, and turned into doom.

We have renewable wind, water, solar and energy-efficiency technology options now. We can scale these quickly and affordably, creating economic growth, jobs and a truly clean energy future to address climate change. Political will is the missing ingredient. Meaningful carbon reduction is impossible so long as the fossil fuel industry is allowed so much influence over our energy policies and regulatory agencies. Policy makers need to listen to the voices of independent scientists while there is still time.

So, let me get this straight: we’re supposed to listen to Ingraffea, who made lots of money working in the oil and natural gas business, now he no longer wants anyone else to have that benefit. We’re supposed to listen to him? No thanks. Carbon reduction? Perhaps we should kill most people, heck, most animals, since our bodies contain vast amounts of carbon. We are called “carbon based life forms”. Yet, Ingraffea is referring to CO2, so, again, he avoids scientific correctness. Wind and solar cheap? BS. And after all the money dumped into Obama’s “green” projects, where are the jobs? Water? Warmists and enviroweenies say they are for hydro-electric, but only on paper. They not only refuse to allow new dams to be built, they want existing ones torn down.

As for time, perhaps Ingraffea missed where there has been a statistically significant pause in warming over the past 15+ years. Methane could be a real issue, yet, instead of offering wise solutions to deal with it (such as capture and usage, as more and more landfills and farms are doing), he just wants it gone.

Organizing For Action Declares Obama’s Economic Pivot Over

Not that this pivot, the 19th during his 4 1/2 years in office, really went far in the first place. A couple speeches, a weaselly Weekly Address, an interview with the NY Times, none of which did more than offer the same tired campaign rhetoric of Blamestorming, division, and failed (and even contradictory – he wants everyone to go to college, apparently to be blue collar workers paving roads) policies, with no new policies offered. All this was most likely to rescue his sagging poll numbers and distract from his incompetence, scandals, fecklessness, irresponsibility, etc.

(Daily Caller) Organizing for Action, the nonprofit organization assembled from the remnants of President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign, is pushing for the president’s second-term agenda during a month-long “Action August” of advocacy and fundraising — but don’t expect to hear about the economy.

Beginning on Obama’s birthday, August 4, OFA will spend the month promoting the administration’s top issues ahead of the 2014 midterm elections: the benefits of enrolling early in Obamacare (August 4), immigration reform (August 5), climate change (August 13), gun control (August 21), and immigration reform again (August 31).

Well all know that the supposedly independent OFA is simply the action arm of Mr. Obama, and the two are linked, if not in law, in reality, arm in arm, with Obama surely directing the way.

Obama will supposedly give more speeches after last week’s 3 speeches, ones that will supposedly have more specifics. Which will probably be the same tired and failed policies he tried during the first 4 years. But, will that happen? There is absolutely nothing on his schedule. Nor for the following week. Politico states that he’s sitting down to lunch with Hillary Clinton today. And then he’ll meet with the SF Giants, winners of last year’s World Series (boooooo. I’m a Dodgers fan). White House Dossier says that after that, he’ll meet with “civil rights” leaders, probably to gin up more division post-Zimmerman trial.

Don’t forget, he’s going to “spend every minute of every day doing everything in my power to make this economy work for working Americans again..”.

Obama Will Evaluate Keystone XL Solely On Its “Climate Change” Effects

In a long, boring interview with the NY Times, in which (NMP) Obama dishes forth the same old failed policies, engages in lots and lots of Blamestorming as if this wasn’t his second term in office, patronizes, and offers little in the way of new policies, we find this bit on page 5 (via Tom Nelson)

(NY Times) MR. OBAMA: Well, first of all, Michael, Republicans have said that this would be a big jobs generator. There is no evidence that that’s true. And my hope would be that any reporter who is looking at the facts would take the time to confirm that the most realistic estimates are this might create maybe 2,000 jobs during the construction of the pipeline — which might take a year or two — and then after that we’re talking about somewhere between 50 and 100 [chuckles] jobs in a economy of 150 million working people.

It’s heartening to read that Obama chuckled about the notion of creating 50-100 permanent jobs directly, and 2,000 construction jobs. At least it would create permanent jobs, unlike his “green” energy jobs. Oh, and the Stimulus was almost solely about short term jobs. It’s also interesting to note that Obama has his talking points down pat from lefties against Keystone. The builders say this will require 9,000 people to construct it. Plus 7,000 to manufacture the parts. 4,000 are employed building the Gulf Coast Pipeline project in reality. And

The Canadian Energy Research Institute predicts that Keystone XL will add $172 billion to America’s gross domestic product by 2035 and will create an additional 1.8 million person-years of employment in the United States over the next 22 years.

I guess Obama would prefer his own method, which is turning America into a wasteland of part time jobs and people giving up on ever obtaining a job in despair.

Now, having said that, there is a potential benefit for us integrating further with a reliable ally to the north our energy supplies. But I meant what I said; I’m going to evaluate this based on whether or not this is going to significantly contribute to carbon in our atmosphere. And there is no doubt that Canada at the source in those tar sands could potentially be doing more to mitigate carbon release.

NYT: And if they did, could that offset the concerns about the pipeline itself?

MR. OBAMA: We haven’t seen specific ideas or plans. But all of that will go into the mix in terms of John Kerry’s decision or recommendation on this issue.

So, he won’t base his recommendation on it based on jobs, the economy, our need for energy, no, the Man With The Largest Carbon Footprint In The World will based it on hotcoldwetdry. But, also, apparently outsource the decision to Secretary of State John Kerry, another guy with a huge “carbon footprint”. Even though the State Department has signed off on Keystone XL several times. It’s latest assessment essentially said the pipeline would make barely any difference, because Canada is going to exploit the tar sands regardless. Oh, and the State Department just approved a different pipeline from North Dakota to Alberta to carry Ethane (which is extracted from natural gas).

Obama doesn’t even get the science right: it’s CO2, not “carbon”. I think we can all see that this climahypocrite will hold off on the decision as long as possible, then find a way to say “Nyet”, simply because of politics and in the face of other pipelines being built.
