Why Brett Kavanaugh Wasn’t Believable
What a study in contrasts: Where Christine Blasey Ford was calm and dignified, Brett Kavanaugh was volatile and belligerent; where she was eager to respond fully to every questioner, and kept worrying whether she was being “helpful†enough, he was openly contemptuous of several senators; most important, where she was credible and unshakable at every point in her testimony, he was at some points evasive, and some of his answers strained credulity.
Indeed, Dr. Blasey’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday was devastating.
With the eyes of the nation on her, Dr. Blasey recounted an appalling trauma. When she was 15 years old, she said, she was sexually assaulted by Judge Kavanaugh, then a 17-year-old student at a nearby high school and now President Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court.
She forgot to supply any actual evidence and corroboration, no witnesses, nothing but her suspect memory from 36 years ago of a day and at a place that she cannot remember.
Judge Kavanaugh, when it was his turn, was not laughing. He was yelling. He spent more than half an hour raging against Senate Democrats and the “Left†for “totally and permanently†destroying his name, his career, his family, his life. He called his confirmation process a “national disgrace.â€
“You may defeat me in the final vote, but you will never get me to quit,†Judge Kavanaugh said, sounding like someone who suddenly doubted his confirmation to the Supreme Court — an outcome that seemed preordained only a couple of weeks ago.
Judge Kavanaugh’s defiant fury might be understandable coming from someone who believes himself innocent of the grotesque charges he’s facing. Yet it was also evidence of an unsettling temperament in a man trying to persuade the nation of his judicial demeanor.
You can’t win with these people. This will be the new line of attack on Judge Kavanaugh. Ruth Marcus gives it a shot. So do others. But, you have to wonder what the normal American thought. We know most hardcore Democrat are against him to start with because they’re worried about abortion on demand. What of most who aren’t particularly involved? Did they see someone who was upset that he and his family have been put through this because Democrats are unhinged, reprehensible, loathsome people? Kavanaugh’s attacks were aimed at elected Democrats, not Dr. Ford. Democrats have promised to continue the attacks, which harm his wife and kids, if he is confirmed to the Supreme Court.
Anecdotally, I wonder how many watched. I was at the gym from 530-7, and there was no one there but me. Highly unusual. A few started showing up at 7.
Lindsay Graham utterly exploded when it was his time
“What you want to do is destroy this guy’s life, hold this seat open, and hope you win in 2020,†Graham said to Senate Judiciary Democrats. “You’ve said that. Not me. You’ve got nothing to apologize for. When you see Sotomayor and Kagan, tell them that Lindsey said ‘hello’ because I voted for them. I would never do to them what you’ve done to this guy.â€
“This is the most unethical sham since I’ve been in politics,†Graham asserted, fuming with anger.
“Boy, you all want power,†Graham continued. “God, I hope you never get it. I hope the American people can see through this sham — that you knew about it and you held it. You had no intention of protecting Dr. Ford. None. She’s as much of a victim as you are.â€
And in the hall
Again, if these are the roads Democrats want to travel, they shouldn’t act surprised when the GOP goes after their nominees.
