Newt Gets Coveted Endorsement By New Hampshire Union Leader

Chris Wallace stated that this is more of a negative for Mitt Romney than a positive for Newt

(Fox News) Former speaker of the U.S. House and current GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has received the coveted endorsement of the highly-influential New Hampshire newspaper “The Manchester New Hampshire Union Leader,” an endorsement Republican rival Mitt Romney has adamantly sought.

The endorsement of the conservative newspapers’ editorial board places an exclamation point on Gingrich’s impressive surge from has-been GOP contender to front-runner, and sets him apart as the new anti-Romney candidate amongst his competitors.

The New Hampshire Union Leader wrote in Sunday’s editions that the former Georgia lawmaker is the choice of the conservative editorial page. The decision was published in a banner headline across the front page of the Sunday edition.

Said endorsement is only available in the print and digital e-Editions, but, the Politico has some of the key points

America is at a crucial crossroads. It is not going to be enough to merely replace Barack Obama next year.

We are in critical need of the innovative, forward-looking strategy and positive leadership that Gingrich has shown he is capable of providing…

Readers of the Union Leader and Sunday News know that we don’t back candidates based on popularity polls or big-shot backers. We look for conservatives of courage and conviction who are independent- minded, grounded in their core beliefs about this nation and its people, and best equipped for the job.

We don’t have to agree with them on every issue. We would rather back someone with whom we may sometimes disagree than one who tells us what he thinks we want to hear.

Newt Gingrich is by no means the perfect candidate.

But Republican primary voters too often make the mistake of preferring an unattainable ideal to the best candidate who is actually running.

Let’s not forget, the Union Leader endorsed John McCain, and look how that turned out.

I haven’t written much about Newt, because he is not my favorite. I do not trust him, much as I do not trust Rick Perry. Some of  Newt’s positions seem to change with the wind, such as his globull warming positions. I do have to admit that he is extremely knowledgeable, in both domestic and international issues. I’m confident he could wipe the floor with Obama during any debates. I do like that Newt has attempted to keep it about Obama (and the foolish moderators) during the debates, rather than attacking his opponents. He knows who the real opponent is.

The big question is, is he the “flavor of the week” in the movement to keep Romney from winning the primaries, or, is there some substance behind his rising? Remember, there are many young conservatives who do not remember the old Newt, and may very well agree with some of his ideas on globull warming and illegal immigration. Many of these young conservatives are more concerned with fiscal matters than social ideas. Time will tell as we approach the votes that really matter.
