House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.) asked comedian Stephen Colbert to excuse himself from a subcommittee hearing on Friday.
Conyers, during opening statements at a hearing of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security, and International Law, asked Colbert to submit his statement for the record and leave the hearing.
Colbert responded that he was there at the invitation of Rep. Zoe Lofgren (Drugs-Calif.), who further said she wanted Colbert, with his vast knowledge of illegal immigration issues, to stay and testify.

The comedian’s appearance has been ridiculed by some Republicans on the committee as pointless. Conyers, in his statement, praised Colbert and his forthcoming rally, but said the intense media attention might make it worthwhile for Colbert to leave.
Damn, Conyers did the right thing for the wrong reason. Media attention is not the answer, it is that Colbert is not an expert on the issue, and that his invitation to come and testify in character (which would mean he is violating the oath for testimony) makes a mockery of what should be serious testimony.

Good morning. My name is Stephen Colbert; television personality, comedian, and resident of New York. I would like to thank the Committee and its members for their time today and their open minds as I present my statement for the record.
Colbert, who got five minutes to share what he called his “vast knowledge” of farm labor, began by touching on the effect of his presence.
“I certainly hope that my star power can bump this hearing all the way up to C-SPAN1,” he quipped.
His testimony at times bordered on the absurd.
“The obvious answer is for all of us to stop eating fruits and vegetables,” he said at one point. At another, he said, “Maybe the easier answer is to have scientists create vegetables that pick themselves.”
It wasn’t Colbert who was beclowned. The Democrats did that to the American People.

While Glenn attacked COLBERT for just being COLBERT, I think he is perfect, and has done the perfect thing. He appeared as a farce at a farce. What the hell is a hearing on immigration for Democrats?!?! Why even think of inviting an actor if you don’t intend on the hearing to be a farce from the start?!?!
Glenn was knocked down in my respect for his attack of COLBERT today. COLBERT is as much a true patriotic American as Glenn professes to be.
And, I doubt anything will happen with regard to the DOJ hearing expect the total ruination of the witness in the future. Am surprised he actually survived long enough to testify. In this government, witnesses to corruption usually end up dead. Especially when tied to Democrats.
You mean Glenn Beck? Missed that. Had TV on, but, wasn’t listening while trying to fix the threaded comments. Or, did he do it on radio?
I’m not a big Colbert fan, but, he is a good guy, loves America. It was the Democrats who, dare I say, jumped the shark with this stunt, probably designed to deflect attention away from the DOJ hearing. We’ll have to see if that case goes anywhere. It has been dragging on and on. Could get really nasty when the GOP takes back the House.

Very appropriate analogy of the Democrat show. That is all it was. Something to try and take light away from the DOJ hearing. And, from what I heard, they didn’t turn on COLBERT microphone for a long time.
And, I think it was rather slimy of Conyers to do what he did. You don’t ask an invited guest to leave…just leave. Anyone who speaks at Congress is invited. You can’t just walk off the street and sit at the front table and expect to have your voice heard (shamefully).
What I would like to see is someone to actually stand up to these buffoons (baboons?) in charge and tell them heck no they wont go to Congress to “testify”. Do they have arrest power? If so, I still wouldn’t do it. Couldn’t afford to do it anyway.

You know Cap’n, I didn’t hear Beck’s comments on Colbert, but I have to wonder if a “patriot” would have made a mockery of a Congressional hearing.
That may be a bit strong as it questions Colbert’s patriotism, but a congressional hearing is not a Las Vegas comedy club, and it is not his show.
At best, his “testimony” was tacky and inappropriate, in my opinion.
Why was this monumental waste of time allowed to occur? Immigration is a serious issue and a senator thinks that some comedy sketch is a good idea?

I would agree with you if he was not invited. He was invited by the Dems for several purposes. One, to make that mockery of Congress that you spoke of. And, he played right in to it. He is an actor after all. He probably got paid for it. How else was he going to come to Congress? Congress invites “him” to come….. who him? .. why Colbert him. Why would they invite Colbert to “testify”??? Not because he knows anything or because he can add value, but to make a mockery happen.
The second reason the Dems invited him was to take some news off of the Friday DOJ hearing that was slam-bam-thank-you-ma’am deadly for the Dems and their DOJ! Was the timing coincidental? I think not.
There was absolutely no reason for them to CALL Colbert to “testify” before a Congressional hearing on immigration. Unless it was for the DEMS themselves to make a mockery.
I guess I am saying, don’t blame the messenger.

He was invited to attend – he was not subpoenaed. He didn’t have to accept.

I think he would have led a second revolution against what he would have been seeing and seen over this decade.
What do you think he could have done to “correct” it? Is there anything he could have done at that time to repair the damage done by Progressivism, Liberalism, Socialism, and anti-Americanism that pervades our Congress?

Fair question. I think if Washington were a congressman, he would have thrown Colbert out as making a mockery of the government he had fought to establish and then gone after the idiot that invited him there.
George had quite a temper and was known to not suffer idiots well at all. I truly do not believe that he would have attacked both Colbert and the Congresswoman.
As I said, as far as I am concerned, there was plenty of blame to go around on this. It distracted from the Congressional hearing on the DOJ’s refusal to prosecute the Black Panthers in Philly.
In all seriousness, we seem to have become a country that is always looking for a silver bullet. We always want to blame one person or one entity without saying that multiple people can be at fault. We can’t seem to walk and chew gum.

I totally agree gitarcarver. However, can a member of the minority party in a hearing toss out an invited guest of the majority party?
He sure can point out the waste of time, taxpayer dollars, and the mockery this makes of nearly 250 years of history of honor, character and being responsible to the public.
If I were there, I would have demanded that Repubs walk out of the room and then invite the press to join them, to not show the travesty of justice and a serious hearing, and to join them for their own press conference where they would proceed with a blistering attack on the Dems. Would have laid out a withering attack on the Dems for their supercilious attempt to misdirect the media from the DOJ hearing that could prove the Dems are culpable in a coverup and blatant injustice.
I am ashamed, once again, that today’s Repubs were too busy happily playing the Dems game to even consider this.
