Crazy People Want Federal Investigation Into Sugary Drinks

Looks like Nanny Bloomberg opened a big can of worms nannies with his call for limiting the size of sugary drinks

(Treehugger) A group of almost 100 national and local health, medical, and consumer organizations, plus a handful of municipal public health departments and more than 20 prominent individuals are calling on the Surgeon General of the United States to issue a report on the health effects of soda and other sugary drinks. Referencing the impact of the 1964 Surgeon General’s report on tobacco use, the groups and individuals hope that a report on soda will evaluate the insalubrious effects and better-publicize the health impact of indulging in too many sugary drinks.

“Soda and other sugary drinks are the only food or beverage that has been directly linked to obesity, a major contributor to coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers, and a cause of psychosocial problems,” the groups wrote in the letter to Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius. “Yet, each year, the average American drinks about 40 gallons of sugary drinks, all with little, if any, nutritional benefit.”

Do we really need a Big Government report (which would cost lots of money) to tell us that they aren’t particularly good for us? Of course, what follows would be all sorts of Congressional hearings and calls for restrictions and legislation. And potential restrictions. And all sorts of money wasting “awareness” campaigns. These people need to mind their own damned business.

U.S. CO2 Emissions Down Thanks To Natural Gas

(Investors) The most underreported recent environmental story has been the dramatic decline in energy-related carbon emissions — nearly back to mid-1990s levels, and falling.

Maybe it’s because that story just doesn’t fit the left’s mantra that traditional energy sources are destroying the environment.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) June energy report says that energy-related carbon dioxide fell to 5,473 million metric tons (MMT) in 2011.

That’s down from a high of 6,020 MMT in 2007, and only a little above 1995′s level of 5,314 MMT.

Why?

The most likely explanation for the decline is the shale gas revolution, made possible by hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

Increasingly, power plants are turning to natural gas because it has become abundant, and therefore cheap. And though technology is improving our ability to reduce emissions from coal usage, natural gas is still a much cleaner source.

Shockingly, The NY Times Is Chock Full Of Calls For Gun Control

I’m wondering if any New Yorker could pop on down to the NY Times building and see if the guards in the reception area are still armed. Anyhow, since the Fish Wrap of Record is so utterly against guns, they will refuse to call those people called “police officers” who carry evil guns. Because they are really against guns. Starting off with Roger Ebert, whose headline reads “We’ve seen this movie before”. First, he calls James Holmes nuts. Then

I’m not sure there is an easy link between movies and gun violence. I think the link is between the violence and the publicity. Those like James Holmes, who feel the need to arm themselves, may also feel a deep, inchoate insecurity and a need for validation.

Obviously, Ebert is a movies guy, so, no, all that massive violence as portrayed by Hollywood liberals using all sorts of guns couldn’t have an effect on someone who is a few beers short of a six pack. He then runs on about evil guns and such, coming to the conclusion

This would be an excellent time for our political parties to join together in calling for restrictions on the sale and possession of deadly weapons. That is unlikely, because the issue has become so closely linked to paranoid fantasies about a federal takeover of personal liberties that many politicians feel they cannot afford to advocate gun control.

Perhaps Ebert should have a talk with Obama and Eric Holder, who sent legally purchased guns across the border resulting in the deaths of at least 2 federal agents and over 300 Mexican nationals.

And then we have

  • Charles Blow: One step in the right direction would be to reinstate the assault weapons ban. Even coming from a gun culture, I cannot rationalize the sale of assault weapons to everyday citizens. (Hey, Chuck, Obama had a Dem House and Senate for 2 years, and didn’t)
  • Editorial Board: This latest in a series of murderous acts is a moment to reflect and to search for sensible answers about guns.
  • Letters to the editor: The shooting in Aurora, Colo., brings calls for increased regulation of handguns.
  • Gale Collins seems to take a pro-gun position till ending with: Everybody, including the gun control advocates, knows that nothing will change unless the people decide to do the leading. Eventually, the American voters come around. Just ask the suffragists.

The Times isn’t alone. At The Washington Post, The Editorial Board chimes in about our “senseless gun laws.” And E.J. Dionne, Jr. calls for more gun control. OK. then lets disarm the police. Why do they have guns? And how about security guards on college campuses? At high schools? All they’re doing is perpetuating a notion that guns are cool and can be used for protection. Obviously, if no one was armed, no one would have guns, right? Certainly, gang bangers like MS-13, Crips, Bloods, South Side Locos, the Mexican Mafia, the Latin Kings, Folk Nation, etc would give up their guns to comply with stricter laws, right?

ABC’s Devin Dwyer notes that Obama has been silent on gun control

President Obama has been notably silent on the issue of gun control during his presidency, in spite of at least four major mass shootings during his term — Binghamton, N.Y. (2009); Fort Hood, Texas (2009); Tucson, Ariz. (2011) and now Aurora, Colo.

In his few public statements on guns, Obama has balanced support for Second Amendment rights while emphasizing enforcement of existing laws and a national background check system rather than new controls.

Obama surely wants gun control, but, he’s not dumb enough to call for it, as that would be a pathway for defeat. The purpose of gun control is to disarm the citizenry, leaving government with the only guns. My question is, why would the government need guns if the citizens are disarmed?

Good Grief: Nanny Bloomberg Calls For Gun Control In Wake Of Aurora Shooting

The Other McCain pulls out a great quote from Chris Rock

“What, you can’t be crazy no more? Did we eliminate ‘crazy’ from the dictionary? . . . When l was a kid, they used to separate the crazy kids from everybody. When l was a kid, the crazy kids went to school in a little-a– bus. They had a class at the end of the school . . . Just in case they went crazy, they would only hurt other crazy kids. And we was all safe.”

And then there’s Mayor Bloomberg

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, one of the nation’s highest-profile supporters of gun control, said Friday that “soothing words are nice ” but demanded that the presidential candidates “stand up and tell us what they’re going to do about” preventing mass shootings.

Asked about the shootings at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater showing “The Dark Knight Rises” that killed at least 12 people, Bloomberg said President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney need to offer specific policy proposals, in addition to prayers and sympathy.

“Soothing words are nice,” Bloomberg said during a regularly scheduled appearance on WOR 710 AM in New York. “But maybe it’s time the two people who want to be president of the United States stand up and tell us what they’re going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country. And everybody always says, ‘Isn’t it tragic?’”

OK, tell you what, Mike: you should disarm all your personal security and the cities police officers. Because of guns are the problem, then it is very bad to have so many people armed. There are over 36,000 sworn officers, most of who carry guns. And some carry scary guns known as “assault rifles”. What kinds of guns does your security detail carry, Mike?

It’s a damned shame that so many have to go for the political when a tragedy occurs. John Leguizamo has a problem with guns, except when they make him money through their use in movies. The Lonely Conservative points to how this tragedy is already being politicized. You have the left blaming Rush. You have commenters at The Booman Tribute trying to say this was racism (not BooMan’s fault). Melissa McEwan tries to pull the “this is all our collective fault” mule fritters.

And I’m not buying that shooter, James Holmes, was part of Occupy Black Bloc till I see proof. Also, the Occupiers have tried to distance themselves from OBB many, many times. They do not want these violent crazies around. So, even if Holmes is part of OBB, don’t blame the Occupy movement in general.

BTW, Obama gave a pretty good speech on the tragedy earlier, IMO. It’s too bad the audience was full of fools. Had the one kid in the white and blue striped shirt chuckling and refusing to bow his head during the moment of silence. People chanting 4 more years. Then the applause and smiles at the end like this was a campaign event rather than a solemn occasion.

Iceberg Breaks Off: Everybody Panic!!!!!!1!!!!!

Dorsi Diaz at The Examiner calls this “dramatic and disturbing“, because glaciers obviously never broke off before CO2 was above 350ppm

An iceberg the size of Manhattan broke off this week from the Petermann Glacier, one of Greenland’s largest glaciers. The 46 square mile iceberg had been closely monitored by scientists, who also followed and documented last year’s break off of another iceberg that was twice the size of this one.

These 2 breaks combined have the attention of researchers. “It’s dramatic. It’s disturbing,” said University of Delaware professor Andreas Muenchow, who was one of the first researchers to notice the break, “We have data for 150 years and we see changes that we have not seen before.” Although glaciers do occasionally spawn such breakoffs, what’s happened in the last three years to the Petermann glacier is unprecedented, according to Muenchow and other climate scientists. In a statement today, Eric Rignot of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory said, “The floating extension of the glacier is breaking apart. It is not a collapse, but it is certainly a significant event.”

As Steven Goddard asks, what do you think is supposed to happen?

I’m curious what they think is supposed to happen? More than 400 billion cubic meters of snow falls on the Greenland Ice Sheet every year. That snow has to go somewhere, or it would eventually pile up to the top of the troposphere.

That is how glaciers work, Mr. Nitwit. The snow accumulates in the interior, turns into ice, flows to the sea, cracks, breaks off and floats away.

One hundred years ago a large iceberg from Greenland sank the Titanic, but no mentally deficient lefties were there to blame it on your SUV.

Chick-Fil-A President Causes Liberal Apoplexy After Saying Company Supports Traditional Marriage

On the bright side, this could mean that there will be no more unhinged liberals in Chick-Fil-A’s stinking the stores up

(The Blaze) The president of the popular fast food chain Chick-fil-A has ignited a social media firestorm after saying his company opposes gay marriage.

“Guilty as charged,” Dan Cathy told the Baptist Press when asked about the Atlanta-based company’s support of the traditional family unit.

“We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that,” he said in the interview, posted Monday.

Who could possibly have foreseen that CFA would be for religion and family values? It’s not like every single store is closed on Sunday, even written into the contracts for their mall locations, partly so that employees can “worship if they choose”.

While Cathy’s comments are in line with Chick-fil-A’s history of espousing Christian values — its 1,600 chicken restaurants are closed Sundays — his remarks touched off a wave of anger on the company’s Facebook page.

There’s also plenty of freakout elsewhere, such as at the Democratic Underground and Towleroadgay, which recommends a boycott.

Cathy acknowledged to the Baptist Press the company’s position was bound to be unpopular with some people, and possibly lose some customers.

“We know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles,” he said.

Thankfully, we live in a country where people can still do that. We haven’t quite gotten to the point where the progressive left has made cooperation with their values involuntary, much like Nazi Germany.

New Romney Ad Bashes Obama On “You Didn’t Build It”

This is one that should be on TV from now till election day…..that is, until (NMP) Obama says something else off script that exposes exactly who he is (via Instapundit)

James Taranto explains Obama’s resentment in an article worth the read, and also notes

Meanwhile, @BarackObama tweets a quote attributed to somebody identified only as “Jacob, Michigan”: “ ‘President Obama had the courage to step up and save General Motors, and because of it, I have a job today.’ ” William C. Durant didn’t build GM, but Barack Obama saved it.

That begs a good question: if Obama is saying…

If you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, ‘Well, it must be ’cause I was just so smart.’ There are a lot of smart people out there. ‘It must be because I worked harder than everybody else.’ Let me tell you something: If you’ve got a business, that–you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

…then that means that he cannot take credit for any of the things that he’s campaigning on, because someone else made that happen. When Obama is out there taking credit for rescuing the economy, for “responsibly” ending the war in Iraq (he followed the Bush plan), creating saving (insert number of the day here) jobs, for rescuing GM, for health care reform, for banking reform, Lilly Ledbetter,etc and so on, well, someone else made that happen. So, what can he run on? Closing Gitmo? Oops. As Mitt Romney stated

My own view is that if you attack success, you’ll continue to see what we have seen over the past three and a half years, which is less success. America is a nation which is defined by people coming to achieve, to fulfill their dreams.

It’s the typical Democrat idea: they do not want to build everyone up, they want to tear people down. That way they get the vote of the moocher class. Interestingly, Dems never have a problem with their own wealth and success, just with other people’s, and always refuse to voluntarily give up their own wealth to match their rhetoric.
