Obameconomy: Layoffs And Closings Continue

Let’s be clear: not every layoff, bankruptcy, and closing can be laid at the feet of Obama, his policies, and those of Democrats. These happen even in times when the economy doesn’t suck. But, you can polish a turd, it’s still a turd, and this economy is a turd (via Daily Jobs Cuts)

Let’s look at that link for American Coal

A local coal mine is cutting jobs and blaming it on politics. American Coal in Galatia laid off 54 miners on Wednesday, saying President Barack Obama’s re-election is bad news for the coal industry.

Back during the Bush years, when the economy was roaring, unemployment was below 6%, and GDP was great, Liberals focused on the stock market and every single tiny change. Why can’t we focus on the miserable conditions in the jobs market? We can look at things like the unemployment rate and job creation, but those are general over-views which fail to focus on actual pain caused by Obama and his fecklessness, irresponsibility, demonization, and incompetence.

Big Closings:

There are also small business closings. They may only be small numbers, but, the employees are real people.

Warmist Kerry Emanuel Wonders If Climate Scientists Are Too Cautious In Their Insanity

Well, I added the insanity part. Emanuel wants climate scientists to become more forceful in their predictions and talking points, and brings the #Fail

(Foreign Policy) Conventional wisdom about climate change may have begun to gel in the aftermath of Sandy, but did global warming really cause the vicious hybrid storm that devastated much of the eastern seaboard last week? The short answer is no. Attributing Sandy or any other single event to long-term climate trends is rather like blaming El Niño for a car accident on the Santa Monica Freeway. But that’s hardly an excuse for policymakers to keep kicking the climate can down the road. Science actually doesn’t tell us much about that kind of causality, so it’s time to stop acting like it does.

So, Sandy wasn’t anthropogenic global warming, but, hey, policymakers should Do Something anyhow. Why? Well, researchers like Emanuel love that sweet, sweet federal research money.

At its best, climate science deals in probabilities. This means that under ideal conditions, scientists can estimate how a given climate signal alters the chances of a particular event. For example, we can now begin to estimate how global warming changes the probability of destructive hurricane landfalls. But in the case of hybrid storms like Sandy, which combine hurricane and winter storm characteristics, science hasn’t even progressed to the point of assessing probabilities.

Science hasn’t progressed to the point where they can tell us with certainty that any of their unhinged climate predictions will come about. “Might” is not a probability. Saying my Giants might win this season’s Super Bowl doesn’t assign probability, just wishful thinking.

The same can be said of climate change policy. The world has suffered an extraordinary string of weather disasters over the past decade, ranging from crippling droughts and floods, to severe tornado and hail outbreaks, to highly destructive hurricanes. Insurance industry statistics reflect a substantial increase in damages from these events, but in only a few cases can scientists confidently attribute them to climate change. (For example, increased incidence of droughts, floods, and high category hurricanes may be partly pinned on climate change.)

As Tom Nelson points out “Hey Kerry: Please specify one decade in human history that didn’t include plenty of weather disasters of every type that you mentioned.” And there’s the rub: weather happens. Some decades will be worse than others. When we talk about the top 10 deadliest cyclones, all but 2 of them occurred during cool periods. There were more wars, more starvation, more crop failures, more weather related deaths, more droughts, and more big storms during the Little Ice Age than during this warm period. But, there are more people on the planet now, and more people building in areas that are prone to natural disasters. Why? Because society tends to be pretty darned good during warm periods.

We’re still waiting for all you Warmists to give up your big carbon lives to show us the way forward.

Obama Really, Really Wants His Upper Middle Class Tax Increase

As the saying goes, elections have consequences

(The Hill) President Obama said in his weekly address Saturday that his reelection shows Americans want Congress to pass a tax cut for the middle class.

This is what Conservatives mean when we talk about “bias.” In the first paragraph, we get a lie. Obama doesn’t want to reduce taxes for the middle class: he wants to keep the same Bush era rates for those under $250k. Anyhow

Obama said he would work with Democrats and Republicans, along with industry, labor and civic groups, to find a solution for cutting the deficit. But he said the plan he outlined on the campaign trail is the one the nation chose.

I didn’t realize Obama was such a joker. Of course, what he says and what he does are two entirely different things. And we’ve seen the way he “works” with those who have other ideas over the past 4 years.

“I’m open to compromise and new ideas. But I refuse to accept any approach that isn’t balanced. I will not ask students or seniors or middle-class families to pay down the entire deficit while people making over $250,000 aren’t asked to pay a dime more in taxes. This was a central question in the election. And on Tuesday, we found out that the majority of Americans agree with my approach — that includes Democrats, Independents, and Republicans,” Obama said.

On one hand, hey, he won. Personally, I moved straight to stage 5, acceptance, before I even went to bed on Tuesday (the minute they called Ohio I turned on a movie). There were more people who vote for getting Someone Else’s money to pay for their own lives then people who voted for personal responsibility. But, on the other hand, let’s look at some interesting exit poll data

(NY Sun….I thought they were out of business? Guess not) To the question “Should taxes be raised to help cut the budget deficit?” only 33% answered “yes” while 63% responded “no.” Isn’t that interesting? Nobody’s talking about this exit-poll nugget.

Now, it is true that when the question is asked only about income-tax rates, 13% are okay with an increase for all, 47% want an increase only on incomes over $250,000, and 35% don’t want increases for anyone. That’s not so surprising. Most people make less than $250,000 a year, and would therefore say, “Well, heck, just tax the rich people.”

Hey, there’s that “47%” number that Romney talked about. And they want Someone Else to bear the burden. When 48% have zero net federal income tax liability.

Even on that point, though, the margin is only 37 to 45. It’s below 50%, and not a massive mandate. When one combines that with the earlier question, where nearly two-thirds don’t want to raise taxes at all, you have to ask whether the country isn’t a whole lot more divided on these and other questions than President Obama would have us believe.

Raising income taxes will not help, and isn’t quite the mandate Obama thinks it is. First, it won’t raise the revenue needed. At baseline projections, it’ll only pay for 8 days of current government expenditures. Second, history shows that there is no way in hell the Central Government will do anything other than spend the increased revenue. Third, people with big money will find ways to shelter it from taxation. They’ll also reduce capital investment and spending, which means less money entering the private economy, circulating around, and increasing the coffers of the states, counties, and municipalities. When tax rates are raised, tax collection goes down.

The problem is not one of tax collection, it’s one of spending. Giving government more money simply means they will spend more, and waste more. And those elected to federal office never seem to have skin in the game themselves. What say that every member of Congress, the President, the Vice President and their direct staff, including political appointees and czars, take a 10% pay cut for every $100 billion in deficit spending? All these people, both Democrats and Republicans, are irresponsible with the money that is forcibly taken from the People.

There are many ways to handle this. We can eliminate deductions. Create incentives for the money makers to invest, spend, and bring capital back to the US. We need to reform the way federal agencies are allocated money (wish I could find that post on did on this).

Anyhow, Obama wants a deal? How about we go with the number $500,000? That will make darned sure that the small business owners (those with 50 or fewer employees) aren’t hit? Joe Biden was throwing out $1 million. Republicans say none. Let’s compromise. And, hey, Ace provides a good idea

New tax: Any fee of $1 million or more, the performance for which is substantially completed over the course of six months or less, is hit with a 20% surtax above and beyond normal tax rates. If the work for fee is completed in five months or less, 30%; if the work for fee is completed in four months or less, 40%; if three months or less, 50%.

Let’s take Glenn Reynolds’ proposals seriously– let’s start making Hollywood and the Leisure Class pay its fair share.

Surely you liberals who want people to pay their fair share will agree on this, right?

Oh, and let’s not forget that Obama’s previous plan would raise taxes, or, as he calls them “fees” on way more than those evil rich people.

Pentagon Alerted A Mere 50 Minutes After Benghazi Attack Started

Somehow, according to Bloomberg, this blows away Conservative arguments

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta was alerted about 50 minutes after the start of the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and dispatched troops from Europe within hours, according to the Pentagon.

A timeline released today by the Defense Department counters statements by some Republicans before the Nov. 6 election that President Barack Obama’s administration failed to respond to requests for military aid or for rescue efforts during the Sept. 11 attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. More congressional hearings and briefings on the attack are scheduled next week.

First of all, why did it take 50 minutes to alert the Pentagon? Second, um, can Bloomberg point out what PBO actually did to save our people under assault for 7 hours? Talking about it and moving some assets somewhere else is not the same as actually rescuing our people.

While Obama ordered “all available” Pentagon assets to respond to the attack, no armed planes were near Benghazi at the time, Panetta said today in a letter to members of Congress.

But, hey, we were able to get a drone up and over in 70 minutes. Did the two intrepid Bloomberg reports think to ask how long it would have taken to fly jets from a base in Europe or off a freaking aircraft carrier? Or one of the Marine ships in the Med which carriers Harriers, helicopters, and Ospreys? You know, since we could get a much slower drone over the compound? Bloomberg tries to play with the timeline, but

(Fox) New Pentagon details show that the first U.S. military unit arrived in Libya more than 15 hours after the attack on the consulate in Benghazi was over, and four Americans, including the ambassador, were dead.

That means that they arrived around 22 hours after the attacks began. That sounds like either a breakdown in communication or a bunch of political hacks failing to make a decision in a timely fashion.

His explanation, however, did not satisfy McCain. In a statement Friday, McCain said Panetta’s letter, “only confirms what we already knew — that there were no forces at a sufficient alert posture in Europe, Africa or the Middle East to provide timely assistance to our fellow citizens in need in Libya. The letter fails to address the most important question — why not?

The US has teams all over the world ready to go at a moments notice. They train for situations which are fluid in which information is limited, and they go in and kick the ever loving sh*t out of the bad guys. Why no deployments?

Adult Entertainment Industry Not Thrilled With LA County Condom Referendum

The Nanny State strikes the p0rn industry

(ABC News) A ballot measure mandating that porn stars wear condoms in adult films passed with 56 percent of the vote in Los Angeles County this week, but the adult film industry in California says it has already has a system to curb the spread of sexually transmitted diseases — and it’s better than latex.

The Safer Sex in the Adult Film Industry Act, or Measure B, will require performers to wear condoms during vaginal and anal intercourse, something industry leaders and their employees think is unnecessary because studios require performers to submit to mandatory STD testing every 14 or 28 days. If they aren’t STD-free, they can’t be entered into the industry-wide sexual health database, and they’re banned from performing.

The story notes that when Vivid and Hirsh required all actors to wear condoms back in the 1990’s their revenue dropped 30%. We also hear how a lot of do-gooders with good intentions think that this is super duper great and a “victory for common sense.” In other words, they are legislating thought. P0rn actors and actresses pretty much know what they are getting into, and the industry takes a lot of measures to reduce and eliminate disease.

Performer Kylie Ireland, who also directs adult films, said she was “obviously” against Measure B.

“It’s a ridiculous waste of time and money to regulate an industry that is already self-regulating,” she said. “We’ve done this all on our own. … I always felt totally comfortable and I’ve been in this business for 17 years.”

First of all this is the Nanny State rearing its ugly head. Second of all, can anyone guess what comes next? That’s right, these studios will take their business out of LA County, removing a huge “wad” (couldn’t help myself) of cash from the economy.

Adult film actor James Deen said the measure also violates his rights to free speech because he wants to portray a certain fantasy for film, and he should have the right to do that. He said he is considering a move to Las Vegas, a possible new home for the Los Angeles porn community. (Ireland estimated the L.A. County group makes up about 95 percent of the business in the United States.)

So, violating free speech (that’s kinda nebulous) and a potential huge loss of revenue for LA County.

Calgary Hit With Massive Amount Of Globull Warming Snowfall

Bet they’d be having a lot of fun biking instead of taking fossil fueled travel

(Calgary Sun) Calgarians suffered the same white plight that befell Edmonton just the day before as record amounts of snow blanketed the city and the rest of southern Alberta.

By 5 p.m., 11 cm were on the ground in Calgary, another 15 cm expected overnight, and yet another 10 cm expected Friday, Environment Canada reported.

Environment Canada said average snowfall for all of November is about 16 cm.

The record snowfall for Nov. 8 is 12.6 cm, set in 1973, and November’s all-time high snowfall is 35.6 cm, set on Nov. 13. 1914.

It’s still snowing in Calgary, as of this morning when I wrote the post. Calgary also received lots of snow in October. Like, record amounts.

Earth To Boil In Future, Says New Study

Warmists really just can’t help themselves. Years ago they told Climate Realists that weather was not climate. Now, every storm is proof of “climate change”, even snow storms and long cold periods. I personally love their insane argument about snow, where they say a warmer climate creates more water vapor creating more snow. I guess it was super warm during the last ice age. DERP face. And the Warmists are back attempting to say that storms will be worse and it will get super duper hot

Warmer still: Extreme climate predictions appear most accurate, report says

Except for the fact that the current world temperature is the same as it was 16 years ago.

Climate scientists agree the Earth will be hotter by the end of the century, but their simulations don’t agree on how much. Now a study suggests the gloomier predictions may be closer to the mark.

“Warming is likely to be on the high side of the projections,” said John Fasullo of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., a co-author of the report, which was based on satellite measurements of the atmosphere.

That means the world could be in for a devastating increase of about eight degrees Fahrenheit by 2100, resulting in drastically higher seas, disappearing coastlines and more severe droughts, floods and other destructive weather.

And withing 3 paragraphs we’ve already degenerated into soothsaying: “could”. Not will. No statistical predictive number is provided to asses the likelyhood of a rise of 8 degrees in the future when everyone will have forgotten the prediction. It’s not like their predictions have failed in the past, ya know.

Climate scientists around the world use supercomputers to simulate the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans. Sophisticated programs attempt to predict how climate will change as society continues burning coal, oil and gas, the main sources of heat-trapping gases such as carbon dioxide.

Garbage in, garbage out, especially when they quite often discount/under utilize/don’t included the effects of the sun and water vapor.

No supercomputer is powerful enough to predict cloud cover decades into the future, so Fasullo and colleague Kevin Trenberth struck on another method to test which of the many climate simulations most accurately predicted clouds: They looked at relative humidity. When humidity rises, clouds form; drier air produces fewer clouds. That makes humidity a good proxy for cloud cover.

Really? I live in North Carolina. There are many, many, many days in which the humidity is horrendous, yet, the sky is relatively clear most of the day. I bet many of you can say the same. It’s the upper level atmospheric water content that matters. If you aren’t specifically including cloud cover in your models, they’re worthless.

Scientists not involved in the research said the report, funded by NASA and scheduled for publication Friday in the journal Science, could improve the predictions made by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in its next comprehensive report, due in 2013. The panel is a world body organized by the United Nations to guide policymakers as they struggle to curb and adapt to climate change. The world has warmed by about 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880, a rise scientists nearly uniformly attribute to carbon pollution from fossil fuels.

1.4 F? That’s it since the end of the little ice age? This is not, as Joe Biden would say, a “big f*cking deal.” It is less than one would expect during a warm period. The previous warm periods were up several degrees F higher. This is not science, it’s politics. Particularly since so few Warmists practice what they preach.

Oh, and it’s neither carbon nor pollution. Science!

Double oh, don’t these super computers use one heck of a lot of energy? That would mean, by Warmist doctrine, that they are bad for hotcoldwetdry. So these researchers are part of the problem.

Welcome To ObamaWorld: Large Number Of Companies Announce Layoffs Post Election

Quite a few companies are giving their position on the election outcome

(The Blaze) Do elections have consequences? If you have been paying attention to the financial markets, you might think so. Wall Street has had two horrible days since President Obama won a second term.

However, stock prices are not the only thing taking a hit. It appears that the job market is also suffering. In the last 48 hours, the following major corporations have announced layoffs in America (links take you to news stories about the layoffs – with details from the companies):

Also mentioned is Darden Restaurants, which is going to limit workers to 28 hours a week to avoid ObamaCare requirements regarding full time workers.

The story also lists a large number of companies that announced that they are closing. And then we go to Daily Job Cuts and find more (partial list)

We also get many more closings, including

And plenty more small companies.

Are all these a pure response to Obama’s re-election? Surely, no. There are layoffs and closings every day. But, this was a huge number post election, and those super evil rich people who provide the jobs are certainly highlighting the state of the economy and what they expect the economy to do in the future. They’re telling people they voted for lollipops and unicorns, they voted because they prefer likeability over competence and experience, they voted for more of the same and blamestorming over a proven track record of success. Quite a few companies are laying people off directly due to the ObamaCare tax that’s a penalty but a tax but a penalty. From Twitchy we get

I’m offering a shiny new unicorn to any reporter who asks Obama about all the layoffs and closings. That is, if Obama deigns to take questions. Doubtful.

Good News! Another IPCC Vacation Meeting Coming Soon

And what a vacation it will be! They get to visit Qatar from Novermber 26 through December 7th. Tory Aardvark has a few thoughts, and wonders if anyone is going (well, surely those who are going on Someone Else’s dime will)

It has all been downhill for the warming alarmists since COP15 in Copenhagen where 33526 delegates and press attended what they called Hopenhagen, where the hope was to destroy western industrialised society and pave the way for the Green Hell of the Agrarian Dream.

Then in a flash Climategate destroyed the illusion of Anthropogenic Global Warming, despite the then socialist British Prime Minister Gordon Brown telling us there only 50 days to save the world and the current incumbent socialist US President Barack Obama saying the science is settled.

Then just as the great Green socialist hope for one world government, Barack Obama flew into Copenhagen to save the world from what was then called Global Warming, Gaia saw fit to unleash an unprecedented  irony on the warmists with a massive snow storm that forced Obama to leave early citing “weather constraints in Washington“

Last years UN Climate Circus COP17 in Durban attracted just 12,500 delegates, where 7300 were from Green NGOs and journalists, COP17 like its predecessors COP16 and COP15 achieved nothing, but did provide yet another exotic location for the saviours of the planet to consume huge quantities of fossil fuel and enjoy 5 star luxury living while saving the planet.

Boom! The numbers in attendance have fallen, but there are still plenty of dupes who will take unnecessary fossil fueled flights to proclaim that no one else should take fossil fueled flights. Though, I’m not sure that having a meeting close to the crazy nation of Iran is such a good idea. But, fortunately, the Iranian leaders hold the same views on “climate change” as most in attendance at the COP18 working vacation. I hear they have some great golf there. They even hold a big tournament in Doha, the same city COP18 will be held in.
