Schoolkids Won’t Know What Unsnarled Traffic Looks Like

Won’t someone think of the kids?

The strongest Northwest storm of the season dumped more snow in the mountains and even some lower elevations after earlier firing gusts up to 80 mph along the coast and knocking out power to thousands in the Seattle and Portland areas.

With 3 feet of snow already delivered by Tuesday morning, the Cascades in Washington were expected to get another 6 inches by Tuesday night and then 8-16 inches on Wednesday.

Wet snow pellets that looked like hail hit an area of south Everett during the Monday evening commute, depositing ice along Interstate 5. That snarled commuter traffic in both directions.

If those people hadn’t been driving fossil fueled vehicles they wouldn’t have warmed the world so much that it snowed.

Big Government NAACP Not Pleased With Tim Scott Pick

Why? Tim Scott refuses to toe the NAACP line

(Daily Caller) The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People isn’t too excited about the appointment of Rep. Tim Scott to South Carolina’s soon-to-be-vacated U.S. Senate seat.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley announced her appointment of the black Republican during a noon press conference in Columbia, South Carolina.

This appointment makes Scott the only Black Senator.

“Mr. Scott certainly comes from a modest background, experience, and so forth, and should be sensitive to those issues,” Hilary Shelton, senior vice president for advocacy and policy at the NAACP said, referring to Scott’s impoverished single-parent upbringing in Charleston, SC.

“Unfortunately, his voting record in the U.S. House of Representatives raises major concerns,” Shelton said.

Shelton explained that the NAACP platform is crafted through an annual voting process which engages grassroots-level delegates who vote on the group’s national agenda. That agenda calls for an expansive role for federal government spending in black communities.

Scott, Shelton said, would likely work against that agenda, favoring instead the “small government” posture of Ronald Reagan and that president’s Secretary of Education, William Bennett.

“Small government usually means, as it’s being described these days, the elimination of the role of government and support for initiatives and programs that are crucial for the African-American community,” Shelton said.

Apparently the NAACP prefers the big government approach that has kept so many Blacks in abject poverty, completely beholden to the Central Planning Office. Apparently, the NAACP has forgotten that the second “A” stands for “advancement”. Perhaps they think it stands for Acedia, ie, stagnation.

Leading From Behind: Obama Asks Cabinet For Gun Proposals

With most leaders, this would be a wise move: asking underlings for ideas. With Obama, it’s a way to appear as if he is Doing Something, and if the recommendations are too extreme, he can simply Blame Others and divorce himself from those recommendations

(Washington Post) President Obama on Monday began the first serious push of his administration to attempt to reduce gun violence, directing Cabinet members to formulate a set of proposals that could include reinstating a ban on assault rifles.

Connecticut has its own assault weapons ban in place, and the Bushmaster .223 was legal under that law. And would have been legal under the 1994 federal assault weapons ban.

The effort will be led by Vice President Biden, according to two people outside the government who have spoken to senior administration officials since Friday, when a gunman killed his mother and rampaged through Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., killing 20 children, six adults and himself. (big snip)

Obama, who has appeared shaken by the Sandy Hook shootings, met Monday with Biden, who advocated for stricter gun-control measures during his years in the Senate. The president also spoke Monday with Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius “to begin looking at ways the country can respond to the tragedy in Newtown,” according to a White House official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Eric Holder is one of the last people who should be asked, considering his track record which had 2,000 guns, many of which would be covered by the assault weapons ban, being walked across the border into Mexico and responsible for over 200 Mexican deaths, and the murders of at least 2 US federal border agents. Strange that liberals/Democrats never became upset about that. I guess they hate Mexicans.

“We need to accept the reality that we’re not doing enough to protect our citizens,” Reid, the Senate majority leader, said after a moment of silence on the chamber’s floor. “In the coming days and weeks, we’ll engage in a meaningful conversation and proper debate about how to change laws and culture that allow this violence to continue to grow. . . . And every idea should be on the table.”

Whenever elected officials start talking about doing more, watch out, because there will be lots of restrictions on personal liberty, especially when “every idea should be on the table” regarding laws and culture. I do find it interesting that none of Obama’s peeps nor Harry Reid were particularly concerned with gun violence when it involved Obama’s home town of Chicago.

By the time the process concludes, White House officials suggested, the proposals will probably include ideas to address mental illness and the violence depicted in popular culture — a strategy aimed at focusing the proposal on more than limiting gun ownership.

Hmm, what route will this take? Will the rights of people be affected just because they might be considered a “bit off” by societal standards?

After a family vacation in Hawaii, Obama will face preparations for his second inauguration, second-term staffing issues and his goal of pushing quickly for immigration-reform legislation….

Ah, so he’s still going on vacation  after this tragedy? As usual, he feels he’s done his job and is moving on.

Finally, just to be clear, I have no problem enacting some sort of assault weapons ban, which would focus on weapons that are automatic. Also, restricting magazines to 12 for handguns. And, restrict the manufacture of some rounds, such as fragmenting and those meant to puncture ballistic vests.

Recommendation: The Hobbit

If you’ve read any of my post-movie writings, you know I do not do reviews: I do recommendations. And, The Hobbit? I went to see it this afternoon (after finishing my Christmas shopping). Was it good?

4 1/2 stars out of 5.

There’s a second rating I give, which is “matinee or primetime?” I’d pay to see The Hobbit during primetime. It was very, very good.

I saw the 2D version (didn’t feel like waiting til 430 for the 3D version), and really was fantastic. Peter Jackson used the same types of wide shots which provided breathtaking scenery. For the most part, he stayed with the actual story while adding in extra scenes, some of which come from the extras contained within The Lord Of The Rings and other J.R.R. Tolkien writings. Some others seemed to come out of nowhere, and, while not filler per se, weren’t really necessary. But, hey, if one is trying to string out a book which is only a bit more than 300 pages into 3 movies of damned near 3 hours each (169 minutes for the 1st one), things have to be added.

Martin Freeman does a fantastic job as Bilbo Baggins, a great pick for the part.

On the down side, Ian McKellen (Gandalf) seemed a bit, well, old. In many scenes it seemed as if he was having a tough time breathing. Also, the character of Gandalf appears A LOT. In the book he was, as he says in LOTR, “barely involved”.

Many of the bad guys, such as goblins and orcs, didn’t bear much resemblence to those in LOTR. Gollum was dead on, and more of the nasty creature he was meant to be, not the somewhat comical LOTR version.

The Goblin King was definitely cool. And disgusting.

Overall, a fantastic presentation, beautifully filmed, dialogue that brings you along for the ride.

Now, on to Mirkwood Forest!

Fish Wrap Wonders What Your Hotcoldwetdry Meme Is

25 years on, and Warmists still push the “spreading awareness” silliness

What’s Your Meme? Changing the Climate Change Conversation

We are constantly bombarded by memes in our daily lives. Some spontaneously flare up and then burn out as quickly as they appeared, while others stick around for decades. We hardly consider their presence, much less contemplate their possible influence on our lives.

Researchers in the emerging field of meme science are digging deeper, however, investigating how and why these sticky phrases or trends sink into our cultural psyche and subconsciously influence the way we process the world around us.

“Our goal is to introduce rigorous market research tools that have been developed for the corporate sector and apply them to the most pressing social issues in the world,” said Joe Brewer, co-founder of DarwinSF, a San Francisco-based company founded six months ago to help identify and spread memes that may influence significant global issues, starting with climate change.

Mr. Brewer and his co-founder, Balazs Lazlo Karafiath, aim to quantify the potential impact of a given climate change meme and then selectively promote its spread. If successful, they think they could creatively shift the way we think about and approach the problem.

Hey, I’ve got one! “Practice What You Preach”. And “walk the talk”. “Act like it’s a crisis”. “Give up your damned fossil fueled vehicle”.

Hooray! It’s Time For Warmist Christmas Carols!

They really cannot help themselves (via Tom Nelson)

The Seattle 350 group supposedly performed their “green” Christmas carols on the 8th at the Green Lake Community Center. Here’s a snippet of some of their fun insanity

350 ppm (Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer)
music Johnny Marks c. 1948; words C. Tuttle 2009
Three-fifty parts per million,
carbon in the atmosphere.
We’re closer to three-ninety,
risking all that we hold dear.
Famines and climate chaos,
droughts & melting Arctic too.
Risking life on our planet,
Oh my dear what shall we do?

Coal Train Passes Me
(Come they tell me/little drummer boy)
Coal train passes me pa rum pum pum pum
A hundred cars I see pa rum pum pum pum
Each car five hundred pounds pa rum pum pum pum
Of dust it spews around pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum

Green Jobs (Greensleeves)
music English 16th c.; words C. Tuttle c. 2009
Alas, my love, I lost my job,
No cash, no power, no food to eat.
Our home foreclosed, the malls are dark,
What shall we do now for our living?
(Chorus) Green Jobs can feed us all,
Green Jobs give new energy,
Green Jobs transform the world,
To one where our lives all have meaning.

The 12 Days of Winter
music French 18th c; words K.Stocker c. 2008
In the dark Seattle winter, my planet said to me
1. And please use only what you need!
2. Reduce, reuse, recycle.
3. Buy local food.
4. Give your time and skills.
5. Remember I’m your home.
6. Say no to plastic.
7. Get to know your neighbors.
8. Wrap your gifts in fabric.
9. Plant edible gardens.
10. Tell your kids the truth.
11. Turn off your lights.
12. Bus, bike, or carpool.

Weird, there was nothing about giving up a fossil fueled lifestyle, unplugging all appliances not in use, taking 2 minute showers, handwashing clothes, and turning off your ice maker. Oh, and giving up all those energy using smartphones, tablets, and computers.

I’ll Stay Home for Christmas
music Walter Kent c. 1943; words C. Tuttle c. 2009
I’ll stay home for Christmas.
You can count on me.
We won’t fly, we’ll stay nearby,
we’ll build community.

Hey, good advice for all Warmists! Stay home. No fossil fueled flights! Make sure to replace all the lights with CFLs.

I’m Dreaming of a Green Christmas
music Irving Berlin c. 1941; words C. Tuttle c. 2008
I’m dreaming of a green Christmas,
We’ll learn again to grow our food.
We’ll build local turbines & share our
grapevines, And find meaning in our jobs.

It’s almost like they want people to live the 1499 lifestyle.

There are also several songs showing love for the Occupy movement. No mention of rape, murder, drugs, pooping on police cars and people’s doorsteps, though.

We Wish You a Living Planet
music English c. 16th c.; words K.Stocker & C.Tuttle 2010
We wish you a living ocean
We wish you a living forest.
We wish you a living river
We hold them so dear.
Turn plastic away / Plant trees every day /
We wish you a living planet / We all hold it dear!

OK, there you go, Warmists, marching orders. Give up all plastic usage and plant a tree every day.

Liberman: “We Need To Look At This Culture Of Violence”

Retiring Senator Joe Lieberman makes a few good points

(The Hill) Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) on Sunday called for a “national commission on violence,” in the wake of Friday’s shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

“I’m always reluctant about commissions, but I really believe we ought to have a national commission on violence,” said Lieberman, according to a White House pool report. “These events are happening more frequently and I worry that if we don’t take a thoughtful look at them, we’re going to lose the hurt and the anger that we have now.”

Guns are the tools being used, but they are not the result. When people drive drunk and kill someone, we don’t blame the alcohol or motor vehicle, we blame the person who got liquored up. When some Islamist straps on a bomb and goes out to blow himself up with a whole bunch of women and children, we don’t blame the bombs and clothes, we blame the jihadi and that culture of violence (well, many liberals tend to blame Israel and the United States).

Lieberman suggested the commission should have a broad scope and not focus only on the nation’s gun-control restrictions.

“That includes looking at violence in the entertainment culture, mental health services and, of course, gun laws,” he said.

Let’s look into that violence in the entertainment industry, chock full of liberals who wield and even glorify guns. Look at all the violent and popular shows. Person of Interest, NCIS, Criminal Minds, Blue Bloods, Bones, Dexter, Law and Order (on tons of times and with different spin offs), shows on prison, Gangland (one of my favorites), Burn Notice (also one of my favs), and so many others. Plus so many others in regular and syndication.

The top video games of the year include Assassins Creed 3, Halo 4, Dishonored, Ninja Gaiden 3, Max Payne 3, Binary Domain, Sleeping Dogs, Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2, and Borderlands 2, among others.

Look at all the violence in the movies released this and every year.

Hey, look

Deyon Durham, 24, of 279 Faulkner St., was found shot to death at 1221 Montgomery St. shortly after 7 a.m., police said.

The initial investigation suggests that Durham was breaking and entering at the home when the homeowner, whose name was not released, shot him.

Durham had convictions, starting in 2005, for indecent liberties with a minor, sexual battery, breaking and entering vehicles, larceny and failure to register as a sex offender, according to state Division of Adult Correction records.

We should make sure that guns are taken away from law abiding citizens so criminals are never in danger.

Domino’s Sues Over Contraception Mandate

Another patriot who won’t just lie down and let the Central Government Planning Office roll over him and his business

(Fox News) The founder of Domino’s Pizza is suing the federal government over mandatory contraception coverage in the health care law.

Tom Monaghan, a devout Roman Catholic, says contraception isn’t health care but a “gravely immoral” practice.

He filed a lawsuit Friday in federal court. It also lists as a plaintiff Domino’s Farms, a Michigan office park complex that Monaghan owns.

Monaghan offers health insurance that excludes contraception and abortion for employees. The new federal law requires employers to offer insurance including contraception coverage or risk fines.

Monaghan says the law violates his rights, and is asking a judge to strike down the mandate. There are similar lawsuits pending nationwide.

Expect more unhinged behavior from liberals who only like the freedom to choose when it comes to aborting babies.
