Oh Noes: Hotcoldwetdry Changing US Daily Life

Yet another scary report by climate astrologers who refuse to change their own lives to carbon neutral ones (via Tom Nelson)

(AP) Global warming is already changing America from sea to rising sea and is affecting how Americans live, a massive new federally commissioned report says.

A special panel of scientists convened by the government issued Friday a 1,146-page draft report that details in dozens of ways how climate change is already disrupting the health, homes and other facets of daily American life. It warns that those disruptions will increase in the future.

“Climate change affects everything that you do,” said report co-author Susan Cutter, director of the Hazards and Vulnerability Research Institute at the University of South Carolina. “It affects where you live, where you work and where you play and the infrastructure that you need to do all these things. It’s more than just the polar bears.”

Yeah, the weather has always affected those things. I like warmer weather with milder winters, and scorching, humid summers do not bother me because of that awesome invention of the air conditioner, hence, I live in North Carolina. Sure, we have to deal with hurricanes and tornadoes, along with heavy thunderstorm activity now and then. Such is life on earth: weather happens.

Oh, and polar bears are doing just fine. And climate change is a political phrase, not a scientific one.

“Human-induced climate change means much more than just hotter weather,” the report says, listing rising-seas, downpours, melting glaciers and permafrost, and worsening storms. “These changes and other climatic changes have affected and will continue to affect human health, water supply, agriculture, transportation, energy, and many other aspects of society.”

The report uses the word “threat” or variations of it 198 times and versions of the word “disrupt” another 120 times.

Yeah, record corn and sugar beet crops is a Bad Thing. But, what the report is trying to do is create another scary story about weather that has always been changing and unpredictable being all the fault of Mankind, the better to enact legislation that controls people’s behavior.

The report emphasizes that man-made global warming is doing more than just altering the environment we live in, it’s a threat to our bodies, homes, offices, roads, airports, power plants, water systems and farms.

“Climate change threatens human health and well-being in many ways, including impacts from increased extreme weather events, wildfire, decreased air quality, diseases transmitted by insects, food and water, and threats to mental health,” the report said.

Extreme weather has already been debunked. CO2 is not a pollutant. Wildfires have always happened, but tend to appear worse because people live in areas that are subject to wildfires, cameras are present, and extreme environmentalists won’t allow areas to see brush reduced. Disease? Was quite a bit worse at the beginning of the Little Ice Age, when the Black Death killed 75 million people. Mental health? Well, I’ll agree with here there, because Warmists are bat guano nuts. And hypocrites.

For example, the report details 13 airports that have runways that could be inundated by rising sea level. It mentions that thawing Alaskan ground means 50 percent less time to drill for oil. And overall it says up to $6.1 billion in repairs need to be made to Alaskan roads, pipelines, sewer systems, buildings and airports to keep up with global warming.

Except Alaska is cooling. They don’t want you to know pesky facts like that.

Good Grief: NY Times Blames “Climate Change” For Jerusalem Snow

I instinctively know you just face palmed yourself. Want more?

Britons may remember 2012 as the year the weather spun off its rails in a chaotic concoction of drought, deluge and flooding, but the unpredictability of it all turns out to have been all too predictable: Around the world, extreme has become the new commonplace.

Especially lately. China is enduring its coldest winter in nearly 30 years. Brazil is in the grip of a dreadful heat spell. Eastern Russia is so freezing — minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and counting — that the traffic lights recently stopped working in the city of Yakutsk. (schoolkids won’t know what working traffic lights look like)

“Each year we have extreme weather, but it’s unusual to have so many extreme events around the world at once,” said Omar Baddour, chief of the data management applications division at the World Meteorological Organization, in Geneva. “The heat wave in Australia; the flooding in the U.K., and most recently the flooding and extensive snowstorm in the Middle East — it’s already a big year in terms of extreme weather calamity.”

The article provides even more examples of cold and snow later on. But, what’s causing this?

Such events are increasing in intensity as well as frequency, Mr. Baddour said, a sign that climate change is not just about rising temperatures, but also about intense, unpleasant, anomalous weather of all kinds.

And this is how we know it is a cult akin to Jonestown and has little to nothing to do with science.

And Warmists still won’t change their own lives to match their rhetoric.

Heartache: White House Won’t Support Petition To Build A Death Star

(US News) A “Death Star” won’t be a part of the U.S. military’s arsenal any time soon.

More than 34,000 people have signed an online petition calling on the Obama administration to build the “Star Wars” inspired super-weapon to spur job growth and bolster national defense.

But in a posting Friday on the White House website, Paul Shawcross, an administration adviser on science and space, says a Death Star would cost too much to build — an estimated $850 quadrillion — at a time the White House is working to reduce the federal budget.

Well, it would be kind of expensive. Anyone who’s a total Star Wars geek (that’s me) knows that simply building a Star Destroyer used up the entire economic output of a star system. Building a Death Star destroyed the economies of many, many, many star systems. The response also points out that

Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?

Why can’t we fix the flaw? That’s what they did for the second Death Star.

Anyhow, it is a rather amusing response, entitled “This Isn’t the Petition Response You’re Looking For”. But still doesn’t get us a Death Star, which could be used to cross the galaxy (and conquer other star systems).

Along the way, the White House also shot down petitions for secession.

Biden Unleashed: “No Silver Bullet To Stop Gun Violence”

Leave it to Sheriff Joe Biden (who resembled Barney Fife when it came to monitoring the Stimulus spending) to use poor metaphors

(The Hill) The vice president downplayed harsh criticism the National Rifle Association has made about the administration’s gun violence task force.

Vice President Biden said Friday that his task force on gun violence recognized there was “no silver bullet” that would solve the problem and downplayed harsh criticism from the National Rifle Association about the administration’s efforts.

“We know that there is no silver bullet,” to stop gun violence, Biden said, ahead of a Friday meeting with video game manufacturers and retailers. He did not elaborate further.

He’s also “shooting for Tuesday” to deliver his panel’s recommendations. Rather violent rhetoric, wouldn’t you say?

Meanwhile, Joe met with some from the video game industry, who aren’t pleased

Ahead of the meeting, industry organizations issued open letters to the vice president warning that attempts to regulate depictions of violence in video games would likely constitute an infringement on First Amendment rights.

“Governments should not be seeking ways to constrain this emerging medium early in its development by scapegoating video games for societal ills,” said Daniel Greenberg, an executive with the International Game Developers Association.

Hollywood wasn’t pleased, either

In the statement, Hollywood trade groups said they “look forward to doing our part to seek meaningful solutions” to prevent gun violence while emphasizing that the industry already imposes ratings systems for consumers.

“The entertainment community appreciates being included in the dialogue around the Administration’s efforts to confront the complex challenge of gun violence in America,” the statement said. “This industry has a longstanding commitment to provide parents the tools necessary to make the right viewing decisions for their families.”

In other words, don’t blame us if we make really violent TV shows and movies which include evil assault weapons that glorify violence, because we have disclaimers and ratings!

Interestingly, as one person in the comments points out, why no meetings with the music industry, especially the Gangsta rappers? Now there’s a sector that truly pushes violence.

And when are we going to do something about our massive hammer violence? More people were killed in 2011 with hammers than rifles.

2012 Really Hottest US Year Ever?

Now, I know the Warmists out there will start attacking the messenger, but, that’s pretty much because they can’t attack the science and hard facts. Steven Goddard points to the Fox News story making the rounds about Climate Realists questioning the report about 2012 being the hottest contiguous US year ever (which only proves that the year was very warm, but does provide causation)

(Real Science) Nothing could be further from the truth. As of 1999, NASA showed that 1934 was more than one degree (Fahrenheit) warmer than 1998, and that 1921, 1931 and 1953 were all warmer than 1998. (snip)

NOAA makes bold press releases based on hugely altered data, and makes no mention that the data is altered. Then when called out, they claim that the adjustments are small, when in fact the adjustments are larger than the trend. The 1930s used to be by far the hottest decade, before the data was adjusted.

NJ Assemblywoman Wants Psych Evaluations For All Gun Buyers

On one hand, weeding out wackos from being able to legally buy a handgun isn’t that bad an idea. On the other hand, this is damned intrusive

(NJ.com) Individuals seeking a permit to buy firearms in New Jersey would have to submit results of a psychological evaluation before they could buy a gun, under a bill introduced yesterday in the Legislature by West New York Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez.

The measure would also require applicants to have an on-site inspection and evaluation of the household where the firearm would be located.

The bill was one of 18 introduced yesterday by several lawmakers in the state Senate and Assembly intended to curb gun violence in New Jersey, which already has some of the nation’s toughest gun laws.

In addition to Jimenez’ mandatory psychological screenings, bills call for home inspections for those who want to buy firearms; having prospective buyers list the members of their households with mental illnesses; requiring sales of ammunition be face-to-face; and further shrinking bullet magazines’ capacities from 15 to five or 10.

Well, now, that doesn’t seem to intrusive, does it? Home inspections? Psych evaluations? Does anyone else expect that most people would fail what would be highly burdensome and onerous tests?

And, yes, NJ still has gun violence despite the strict laws already in place.

If a mentally ill person wants to kill, they will find a way. This would solve nothing, not to mention the fact it would be a nightmare to the administer.

  • ironbound1: I say, we submit all potential drivers who apply for a license renewal to psychological tests. I encounter far more crazy drivers on a daily basis than crazy gun owners for my entire life.
  • loudaman: Great idea and I think we should expand it to other facets of our lives. We need a law that makes it illegal for over weight people to patronize fast food restaurants. They are only allowed fruits and vegetables until their weight conforms to the national standard. Only then, would they be allowed to have a Big Mac. I wonder how Assemblywoman Jimenez would feel about that one?

Democrats/liberals/progressives/fascists would love a way to come into people’s homes and “evaluate” them.

Kids In Israel Won’t Know What Light Rail Looks Like

It’s so terrible! Won’t someone think of the schoolkids!

(Jerusalem Post) Thursday’s “storm of the decade” provided the requisite shots for the rare winter storm in Jerusalem: haredim praying at the Western Wall, snow clinging to their black hats.

The Dome of the Rock, the golden dome bathed in a light dusting of white.

At the peak of the snow, children trampled through more than 20 centimeters of fresh white powder, smashing snowballs into unsuspecting parents and trying to turn every kind of plastic bag into a sled. In Sacher Park, one optimistic winter aficionado even cross-country skied through the fresh snow.

Bus service within the city was canceled and even the light rail was unable to function due to a technical problem.

This was the biggest snowfall in Jerusalem since 1992.

Schoolkids in Lebanon also don’t know what schools look like, since they were shut down due to the heavy snow.

Elsewhere, Britain is bracing for a massive winter storm. Obviously, all this is caused by too much heat causing greenhouse gases. (Last 2 links via Tom Nelson)
