NY Times: Obama Admin Cast Wide Net In Leaker Cases

How big a net? This big

(NY Times) Even before the F.B.I. conducted 550 interviews of officials and seized the phone records of Associated Press reporters in a leak investigation connected to a 2012 article about a Yemen bomb plot, agents had sought the same reporters’ sources for two other articles about terrorism.

In a separate case last year, F.B.I. agents asked the White House, the Defense Department and intelligence agencies for phone and e-mail logs showing exchanges with a New York Times reporter writing about computer attacks on Iran. Agents grilled officials about their contacts with him, two people familiar with the investigation said.

And agents tracing the leak of a highly classified C.I.A. report on North Korea to a Fox News reporter pulled electronic archives showing which officials had gained access to the report and had contact with the reporter on the day of the leak.

The emerging details of these and other cases show just how wide a net the Obama administration has cast in its investigations into disclosures of government secrets, querying hundreds of officials across the federal government and even some of their foreign counterparts.

So there’s a new revelation, that they went after a NY Times reporter. And these are only the ones we know about. Interestingly, there are no searches (that we know about) involving those who leaked material that makes the Obama admin look good, such as with the Osama Bin Laden raid.

Some officials are now declining to take calls from certain reporters, concerned that any contact may lead to investigation. Some complain of being taken from their offices to endure uncomfortable questioning. And the government officials typically must pay for lawyers themselves, unlike reporters for large news organizations whose companies provide legal representation.

What all this does is create a chill on media contact. Government employees will clam up even when there is no threat. And it will make the Press worried that The Government will come after them if they publish a story. This is intimidation. Let’s not forget how the Obama admin treats many reporters which are critical and publish unflattering stories. Sharyl Attkinson is the poster child for how the Obama admin abuses reporters. The O admin is saying “toe the line, do what we tell you, or we’re coming after you”, which may not violate the letter of the 1st Amendment, but surely violates the spirit.

The question for The Press now is “do you continue to act mostly like little lapdogs, or do you all refuse to be intimidated and finally decide to do you job in keeping government honest?”

Now That CO2 Has Passed 400ppm, We Should All Stockpile Cyanide Or Something

Because, you know, doom (even though that 400ppm thing didn’t happen the other week) (via Tom Nelson)

(Spanner Films) You’ve probably heard the appalling news that, for the first time in human history, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has just passed 400 parts per million. (Eh? Scientific America’s explanation here).  It’s been 2.5 million years since CO2 was last at this level – at which point, temperatures were 2 to 3 degrees C higher, the Arctic was ice-free, global weather patterns were completely different, sea levels were up to 40 metres higher and humans did not live on the planet.

Mankind was around 2.5 million years ago. I do find it weird that it was a lot warmer despite the same CO2 concentration: might there have been something else driving the climate, like, oh, I don’t know, the nuclear furnace in the sky?

Which means that we are heading for an even worse scenario than the one we depicted in The Age of Stupid: Africa uninhabitable, continental Europe mostly desert, Australia’s agricultural system destroyed, hundreds of major cities underwater, hundreds of millions of people dead and many more on the move. Possibly within my lifetime (born 1972, hoping to live to 2062), but almost certainly within my daughter Eva’s (born 2012, hoping to live to 2102).

Hysteria much? I’m going to stop there and go to the ultimate excerpt, as there is just way, way too much unhingedness to post it all. Make sure to read it, as it ends with

Should we stockpile cyanide? You think I’m exaggerating, but a close friend of mine, who has four children, said she plans to kill herself and them when it comes to it.

Raleigh Sets Overnight Low Temperature Record

It’s obviously climate change due to you driving a fossil fueled vehicle and using air conditioning

(WRAL) Sunshine, cooler temperatures and low humidity will dominate the forecast across central and eastern North Carolina throughout the holiday weekend, making outdoor plans possible from the beach to the mountains, WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss said.

In the Triangle, highs will barely climb into the low 70s Saturday after starting out in the low 40s.

“Get ready for some beautiful weather throughout the weekend,” Moss said. “We’ll warm nicely Saturday, but we actually set a record low of 41 degrees at Raleigh-Durham International Airport this morning. The previous record of 43 degrees was set in 1967.”

Some spots in rural areas dipped into the 30s early Saturday, 15 to 20 degrees colder than 24 hours ago.

Ah, 1967, when climate and other scientists, along with the media, were vastly concerned with the coming ice age as global temperatures dipped. Steven Goddard highlights lots more records set.

Do you know what this proves? Nothing. It’s just weather, which happens. Records will be set, highs and lows. The world is currently in a mostly natural warm period, but the weather will do whatever it wants. There will be these periods. What’s happening is not anthropogenic. If Warmists truly believed their own mule fritters they’d give up their own fossil fueled lifestyles. They won’t. Ergo, they know their talking points are bullshit, and only a means to push Progressive (fascistic) government policies.

BTW, Europe is still in the grip of winter, with snow falling. And there is a potential for snow in the US Northeast this weekend.

Sigh: Now A Warmist Blames The War On Terror For Climate Change

Warmists really can’t help themselves, blaming everything for “climate change” (and everything that happens on climate change). Here’s another wacko (via Climate Depot)

(Pakistan Today…or, is that, as (NMP) Obama says “Pock-eeeeeee-stan”?) Former Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) director general (DG) Qamaruz Zaman Chaudhry on Thursday said climate change was on the rise due to war on terror.

The former DG, who also holds the position of vice president of the World Metrological Organisation (WMO), said climate change was taking place after war on terror rapidly.

He said that due to excessive usage of heavy weapons in war on terror, the climate of South Asian region is changing notably.

Well, if he means the fact that the world hasn’t warmed in a statistical significant manner, well, yeah, OK, climate change. Of course, this really goes back to the last El Nino in 1997, with a marginal 0.14F increase in global temps, but, hey, Clinton did launch cruise strikes against Sudan and Afghanistan in 1998.

I do find it interesting that he blames, essentially, the United States for fighting back, but not the Islamic jihadis.

DOJ Fought To Keep James Rosen Warrent Secret

Remind me, isn’t the Justice Department supposed to follow the Constitution and the Law? Apparently not when Eric Holder is in charge and they want to retaliate against a journalist

(The New Yorker) The Obama Administration fought to keep a search warrant for James Rosen’s private e-mail account secret, arguing to a federal judge that the government might need to monitor the account for a lengthy period of time.

The new details are revealed in a court filing detailing a back and forth between the Justice Department and the federal judges who oversaw the request to search a Gmail account belonging to Rosen, a reporter for Fox News. A 2009 article Rosen had written about North Korea sparked an investigation; Ronald C. Machen, Jr., the U.S. Attorney who is prosecuting Stephen Jin-Woo Kim, a former State Department adviser who allegedly leaked classified information to Rosen, insisted that the reporter should not be notified of the search and seizure of his e-mails, even after a lengthy delay. (snip)

He argued that disclosure of the search warrant would preclude the government from monitoring the account, should such a step become necessary in the investigation. Machen added that “some investigations are continued for many years because, while the evidence is not yet sufficient to bring charges, it is sufficient to have identified criminal subjects and/or criminal activity serious enough to justify continuation of the investigation.”

This was a government sponsored fishing expedition which seemingly violated the 4th Amendment, where they just wanted to look and look and look in an open ended way without specificity nor informing the subject of the warrant for years

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

This was an overly broad warrant, and they did not want to notify Rosen. Other people, such as his parents, were caught up in this un-Constitutional scheme.

Many are calling for Eric Holder to go, even on the far left. Here’s Taylor Marsh

If ever someone deserved to be relieved of his job it is Mr. Holder.

I disagree with all these calls from people on the left and right that he should resign or be fired: he should be prosecuted. He most likely committed perjury to Congress with his testimony, and he authorized the breathtakingly Constitutional violating warrants. Ms. Marsh argues that there is only one thing left for Obama to do, which would be kicking Holder to the curb. Here’s Firedoglake

In any case, AG Holder has proved again that he can not be trusted to perform his duties.

I’ll make the prediction that Obama will not fire Holder nor ask for his resignation. When it comes down to it, Obama thinks he is the smartest POTUS ever, and can do no wrong, so if he cans Holder that means Obama made a mistake. Second, Obama is a master at turning negative issues into a wider partisan controversy, and will use it to attack Republicans. Just watch. Consider that Obama is asking Holder to investigate Holder in this matter.

Hooray! Californians Can Now Buy Insurance Against Their Carbon Offsets Going Bust

Rest assured, California’s, that your government enforced carbon offsets can now be protected….by spending more money

The Climate Action Reserve, North America’s premier carbon offset registry, and Parhelion Underwriting Ltd., the leading innovator for carbon market insurance products, today announced a unique, strategic alliance to support the delivery of the first insurance product for compliance offset credits in California’s Cap-and-Trade Program. Under this alliance, Parhelion is offering insurance against invalidation for compliance offset credits that were transitioned from credits originally issued by the Reserve and the Climate Action Reserve will share its unrivalled experience and deep insight in to North American carbon offset projects, thereby, supporting the wider market development and helping its clients solve a critical risk issue.

The offsets program of California’s cap-and-trade market represents a key means for regulated companies to keep their costs of compliance manageable, which means extra costs are not passed on to consumers. It also provides a way to incentivize non-regulated industries to reduce their emissions. Parhelion’s offset credit insurance provides additional confidence for buyers and sellers to participate in this program.

What all this really means is protection from carbon offset plummeting into junk bond status, which they’ve done worldwide on a constant basis. Also, protection from fraud and abuse. I do love the part about the insurance also protecting citizens from not having to worry about all the costs of this ponzi scheme being passed on. Which it will, regardless.

Lois Lerner Directly Involved With IRS Targeting Scheme?

It’s no wonder she pled the 5th (via Gator Doug)

(National Review) A series of letters suggests that senior IRS official Lois Lerner was directly involved in the agency’s targeting of conservative groups as recently as April 2012, more than nine months after she first learned of the activity.

Lerner, the director of the IRS exempt organizations office in Washington, D.C., signed cover letters to 15 conservative organizations currently represented by the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) between in March and April of 2012. The letters, such as this one sent to the Ohio Liberty Council on March 16, 2012, informed the groups applying for tax-exempt status that the IRS was “unable to make a final determination on your exempt status without additional information,” and included a list of detailed questions of the kind that a Treasury inspector general’s audit found to be inappropriate. Some of the groups to which Lerner sent letters are still awaiting approval.

Hmm, if this is true then she committed perjury when she gave her little “I did nothing wrong” statement to the House committee. She can join Eric Holder on the unemployment line, or possibly jail.

Crazy Warmist: Put A Bag On Your Head And Find Out If CO2 Is A Poison

Personally, I think Warmists should find out by giving up their own fossil fueled travel, since they hate fossil fuels so darned much, but they always have an excuse as to why they can’t do that, usually followed by some canned speech about how some Other Guy should have to be made to Do Something to stop Hotcoldwetdry (via Junk Science)

Bad Astronomer Phil Plait attacked the recent pro-carbon dioxide Wall Street Journal op-ed by Will Happer and Harrison Schmidt in a SETI Institute podcast (around 6:50 into the audio) stating:

Of all the bang-your-head-against-the-desk articles, that was the weirdest, the most egregiously wrong, that carbon dioxide is just plant food and if there’s more carbon dioxide we’ll get more plants.

Well, you know, this idea that carbon dioxide is not a poison, is just a natural product, has been going around in denier circles and it’s ridiculous.

If you don’t think that carbon dioxide is a poison, you know, tie a plastic bag over your head for an hour or two and let me know, because yes, in certain circumstances, it’s very dangerous.

As Steve Milloy points out, you won’t die from CO2, but from lack of oxygen (there isn’t time to die from carbon monoxide poisoning).

CO2 is primarily a natural gas (the seas put out 16 times what all of Mankind does) which is necessary for the lifecycle of the Earth. Plants, bushes, trees, and plankton need it to generate oxygen for animals, fish, and mankind to breathe. It also tends to lag behind temperature increases. It’s also a trace atmospheric gas, accounting for a tiny portion of all the gases, around .04%. Plants grow faster the higher the CO2 concentration. And, despite Warmist prognostication, global temperature increase is not following the predicted path, having statistically stalled since 1997.

However, is it any wonder a Warmist degenerates into murderous fantasies?
