New ACA Ad Uses Sister Of High Ranking DHS Official For Sob Story

(Daily Caller) A bright-eyed young woman featured as a happy participant in an ad for the government’s new Obamacare exchanges is also the sister of a high-ranking Obama administration health official.

“Have you met Alejandra?” asks a site run by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Alejandra is looking forward to college and needs insurance, according to an ad on Healthcare.gov, which is managed by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Alejandra “plans to become a health professional – just like her big sister Mayra…And like millions of young adults across the country, Alejandra does not have health insurance,” according to the ad, which is being sent out via email by the federal government. “She used to pay $300 for a checkup that will now be covered in the Marketplace.”

“Alejandra paid $300 out of her own pocket for a checkup and some shots that she needed for school,” said Alejandra’s sister Mayra, who is featured in the ad.

However, the ad does not disclose that Mayra Alvarez is the director of public health policy in the Office of Health Reform at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Alvarez previously served as a legislative assistant on health issues for Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin.

Strange, why did she not stay on her parents insurance plan? That would have been allowable even before the “Affordable Care Act”. And we should call it the “Affordable Care Act”, in quotes the way “climate change” is in quotes, in order to highlight just how unaffordable it is. That checkup would be covered by the ACA, however, Alejandra will be required to purchase health insurance, and will pay, on average, 62% more for a plan through an Exchange than if she purchased it previously on her own (99% more for men). The average cost for a plan is $328. Of course, as a young person, Alejandra should understand that the “Affordable CA” is set up to stick it to her and others in her age group. So now, instead of paying $300 for a checkup once or twice a year, she can pay way more than that all year long. Or have pay a fine/tax. And, fortunately, her choice of doctors will be limited. And she’ll have to wait in long lines to see a doctor.

Warmist: “there is limited data available about the deepest regions of the sea”

This is how “science” is practiced in Warmist World (via Junk Science)

(Deutsche Welle) The output of heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) continues to surge, forcing up global temperatures. Sea levels are also rising, said Mojib Latif of the Geomar Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel. “This reprieve only refers to the ocean’s surface temperature. We can’t conclude that climate change has come to a halt.”

Mojib Latif predicted a temporary hiatus in global warming Latif is a calm, self-controlled man, but he is easily angered by having to explain again and again why climate change isn’t just a scam. Back in 2008, Latif shocked many of his colleagues by saying the rise of temperature could indeed stagnate. Oceans covering two thirds of the earth’s surface are able to absorb heat and store it – especially in deep sea levels below 800 meters (875 yards).

This theory is supported by many other scientists, but there is limited data available about the deepest regions of the sea. That’s why Latif continues to stress how important research is in order to learn more about deep sea areas. “We know about the surface of the moon, but we know very little about the deep sea,” he told DW.

Most the article is seriously Alaramist, as expected. Now, here’s how science works

  1. Could the heat be disappearing into the deep oceans?
  2. Do background research and realize this is idiotic
  3. But, since you have nothing better to do and received a nice grant, you construct some sort of hypothesis
  4. Experiment and gather actual data to test the hypothesis
  5. Analyze the data and realize that the question and hypothesis are idiotic
  6. Write a paper and be called a dupe of the fossil fuel industry, get blackballed and let go

Here’s how Warmist science works

  1. Freak out about why global temperatures aren’t co-operating with the computer models
  2. Chat with fellow Warmists, decide that the heat must be missing, get a nice fat government grant to postulate
  3. Realize there is little data for the deep oceans, postulate that it is doing a Where’s Waldo?
  4. Tell everyone that it is hiding in the deep ocean, publish press releases, get the backing of other Warmists
  5. Go on news shows and discuss with newpapers and magazines, say it is consensus
  6. Denigrate anyone who dares ask “where the f**k’s your hard data?”
  7. Say the science is settled, take a fossil fueled trip to a climate change conference

Notice that in the article Latif is essentially skipping all that pesky “gathering data and testing” stuff. He, like other Warmists, has essentially drawn a conclusion from a thought, without data. The hypothesis is “it must be Mankind’s fault, so we have to find a way to make everything fit our preconceived notions”.

“Sexist” Gorilla Kicked Out Of Zoo, Sent To Therapy

(NY Daily News) A “sexist” male gorilla at Dallas Zoo is being evicted and sent for therapy after he bit one female companion and belittled others.

Patrick — a 430-pound Western lowland born at New York’s Bronx Zoo in 1990 — will be moved to Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens in Columbia, S.C., according to ABC 27.

It’s hoped that his new bachelor pad at the resort known for helping primates with behavior problems will bring out his softer side.

The UK Metro reports that Patrick actually sneered at female gorillas, to go along with the belittling. He’s apparently not very social with other gorillas, but likes people, and is very popular at the zoo. But, he sneered at female gorillas, so, eviction, relocation, and therapy for Patrick.

Why We’re Shutting Off Our Comments

Comments can be bad for science. That’s why, here at PopularScience.com, we’re shutting them off.

It wasn’t a decision we made lightly. As the news arm of a 141-year-old science and technology magazine, we are as committed to fostering lively, intellectual debate as we are to spreading the word of science far and wide. The problem is when trolls and spambots overwhelm the former, diminishing our ability to do the latter.

I guess they haven’t heard of using methods like Bad Behavior, Akismet, Disqus, and others commenting blockers. They aren’t perfect, but certainly cut down quite a bit.

A politically motivated, decades-long war on expertise has eroded the popular consensus on a wide variety of scientifically validated topics. Everything, from evolution to the origins of climate change, is mistakenly up for grabs again. Scientific certainty is just another thing for two people to “debate” on television. And because comments sections tend to be a grotesque reflection of the media culture surrounding them, the cynical work of undermining bedrock scientific doctrine is now being done beneath our own stories, within a website devoted to championing science.

Science like this, where the 1930’s data was changed to be cooler?

The article cited is a NY Times whine-fest about people not buying into “climate change”, ie, people who use lots of fossil fuels and air conditioning blaming Other People for Bad Weather caused by using fossil fuels and air conditioning. Seriously, who would want to discuss the reality of the science of “climate change” when we find out the Himalayan glacier report in the 2007 IPCC AR4 was based on a speculative comment in an email?

(Vox Popoli) Comments aren’t bad for science. Comments are bad for those who are stubbornly clinging to outdated scientific paradigms that are showing obvious cracks.

There are many Warmist websites I’m blocked from commenting at. Same with other Climate Realists like Steven Goddard, Tom Nelson, Anthony Watts, etc. Because Warmists do not want debate: they want people to sit down, shut up, and smile as Government becomes more intrusive and controlling. All based on a lie.

Oops: Washington Post Notices “If You Like Your Doctor, You Can’t Keep ‘Em”

The Washington Post’s Sandhya Somashekhar and Sarah Kliff spend a long, long time telling us just how super great awesome the new Obamacare premiums will be, based on a DHS report released Wednesday (which is interesting, since the article was posted at 12:01 am on Wednesday)

The report, released Wednesday by the Department of Health and Human Services, showed significant variation in the insurance premiums that Americans shopping on the individual market could pay under the president’s health-care overhaul. Across the 48 states for which data were available, the unsubsidized monthly premiums could be as low as $70 for an individual and as high as $1,200 for a moderate plan for a family of four.

Um, OK. Then we have this buried at the end of the article

But they warn that premiums don’t tell the whole story.

The low rates are possible in part because insurance companies created special plans that include fewer in-network doctors and hospitals than many current plans.

This may not be a problem for healthy people who currently lack insurance. But those with illnesses may discover that their specialists are not covered by an exchange insurance plan. Low-income people accustomed to a certain community clinic may find that going there is no longer an option. And everyone may encounter long waits to see a doctor.

In addition, many of the lowest-cost plans may carry high deductibles, despite a cap imposed by the law that limits out-of-pocket costs to $6,350 per person per year.

Rationing. Limited choice of doctors. And, more importantly, a limited choice of in-network specialists, the people who deal with healing people when some Bad happens. Which is the major point of having health insurance, not having to pay out thousands and thousands when something Bad happens.

Former U.N. High Commissioner For Human Rights Says All Fossil Fuels Need To Be Left In Ground

East for Mary Robinson to say, considering he whole political career has been made possible by fossil fueled travel, but now she wants to deny people in 3rd world nations (and everyone else) the same 1st world benefits

(UPI) Governments must leave fossil fuel reserves in the ground unburned and unexploited to really protect the planet, a senior diplomat from Ireland said Monday.

Mary Robinson, a former Irish president and U.N. high commissioner for human rights, is leading a new international push that has a goal of breaking the climate talks stalemate and countering climate change skeptics, The Guardian reported.

Robinson said world governments must get used to the idea of leaving fossil fuels alone so emissions don’t threaten the climate in advance of the report to be unveiled Friday by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Mary’s become quite the Warmist over the years, even establishing the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice. And taking all sorts of fossil fueled trips. As part of The Elders she took a trip to The Great Lakes (the African ones) just this month. Anyone think she walked there? Or is your bet on “private fossil fueled airplane followed by huge armored SUVs”?

Why not Tweet her through her foundation, ask if she’ll pledge to give up her own fossil fueled travel.

Strange: Paper Finds Climate Realists Share Similar Environmental Values To Warmists

How could this possibly be?

(The Hockey Schtick) A paper published today in Global Environmental Change finds that “a central organising idea for climate change sceptics” is that climate change is governed by natural cycles, such as ocean oscillations and solar activity, and that “‘sceptics can have pro-environmental values similar to climate change believers.”

According to the authors, “In contrast to other studies that postulate scepticism and denial as individuals’ fear management strategies in the face of climate change threat, we found that the natural cycles view is founded on a reassuring deeper conviction about how nature works, and is linked to other pro-environmental values not commonly found in sceptical groups. It is a paradox of natural cycles thinking that it rejects the anthropocentrism that is at the heart of science-based environmentalism. By contrast, it places humans as deeply integrated with nature, rather than operating outside it and attempting with uncertain science to control something that is ultimately uncontrollable.”

Quite true, most skeptics I know are pro-enviroment for things that actually matter, such as water quality, toxic pollutants, sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxide, atmospheric particulates, etc., but opposed to wasting the majority of environmental efforts on trying to control the weather with the harmless, essential, & trace gas CO2.

Isn’t that something I’ve been postulating for a long, long time? And mentioned many times that one of the things that heavily annoys me about the Warmists is that they fold every real environmental issue under the banner of “climate change”, which diminishes the significance of the environmental issues? I’m not a big fan of oil or coal, not because of CO2, but because they aren’t exactly clean. I’d like to see them replaced, but biofuels aren’t ready yet. I support solar, wind, geothermal, hydrothermal (and nuclear), but solar and wind aren’t ready yet, and I’m against pissing taxpayer money away on programs that reward campaign contributors, increase energy costs (meaning everything goes up), and provides little usable power. Geothermal is making strides, and will be best accomplished by focusing on small projects, particularly for homes, apartments, small buildings. Hydrothermal is typically blocked by enviroweenies, who do not want fish harmed or something.

However, let’s also not that Warmists aren’t really enviros, they’re far left progressives who want to use “climate change” to increase the power and size of Government while instituting far left authoritarian regimes.

It’s One Blow After Another To ObamaCare

Politico finally notices that Obamacare is a train wreck. Of course, said train wreck is based on a throwaway line the Obama campaign came up with on the spur of the moment because Obama knew nothing about healthcare prior to attending a campaign event. This follows on the heals of the Washington Post noticing that the Exchanges aren’t ready for 3am TV, much less prime-time. And the NY Times notices that Obamacare is going to mean fewer healthcare choices and crummier care. Fortunately, The Politico Knows Who To Blame

Obamacare: One blow after another

The Obamacare that consumers will finally be able to sign up for next week is a long way from the health plan President Barack Obama first pitched to the nation.

Millions of low-income Americans won’t receive coverage. Many workers at small businesses won’t get a choice of insurance plans right away. Large employers won’t need to provide insurance for another year. Far more states than expected won’t run their own insurance marketplaces. And a growing number of workers won’t get to keep their employer-provided coverage.

Every branch of the federal government played a role in weakening the law over the past three years, the casualty of a divisive legislative fight, a surprise Supreme Court ruling, a complex implementation and an unrelenting political opposition. The result has been a stark gap between the promise of Obamacare and the reality — one that has fueled a deep vein of skepticism about the law as it enters its most critical phase.

So, the cheerleaders at the Politico won’t blame the law itself? The one that’s going to leave 500K kids without coverage? The one that is already causing doctor rationing in California? The one where premiums are skyrocketing? The one causing company after company after company to drop coverage and/or reduce employee hours? The one in which Congress is exempted from?

But only 16 states and the District of Columbia decided to take the lead. Six others are partnering with the federal government. The federal government will run insurance exchanges by itself in the other 28 states.

And the federal government isn’t ready to run the exchanges for the start on October 1st. Insurers are dropping out of the exchanges in droves. Obamacare is one of the main reasons the economy has stagnated. And, since the employer mandate has illegally been extended to 2015, after the 2014 mid-terms, many of the employer based issues will not hit till late in 2014.
