They might just have to let buildings with “alternative energy” burn
(Fox News) Firefighters across the nation are alarmed at the prospect of battling blazes in buildings topped with solar panels, which can create new risks of roofs collapsing, an inability to gain footing and even potential electric shock.
Two recent fires involving structures decked with solar panels have triggered complaints from fire chiefs and calls for new codes and regulations that reflect the dangers posed by the clean-energy devices. A two-alarm fire last week at a home in Piedmont, Calif., prompted Piedmont Fire Chief Warren McLaren to say the technology “absolutely†made it harder on firefighters. Weeks earlier, in Delanco, N.J., more than 7,000 solar panels on the roof of a massive 300,000-square foot warehouse factored into Delanco Fire Chief Ron Holt’s refusal to send his firefighters onto the roof of a Dietz & Watson facility.
“We may very well not be able to save buildings that have alternative energy,†New Jersey’s Acting Fire Marshall William Kramer told The Star-Ledger.
One of the problems is that even after the power is shut off, the panels still send energy down, creating a shock and burn hazard. Another is that they limit the area firefighters need to operate, creating a situation where they can slip or trip.
What’s the solution? If companies want to put them on their roofs, in all sincerity, good for them. I’ve always advocated that solar is better for small scale use, rather than the massive solar farms taking up huge swaths of land. But, if they make it more dangerous for firefighters, what is to be done?

I always loved listening to Robert D. Raiford on the Southern radio show “The John Boy And Billy Big Show“. He has a line about America being “The United States Of The Offended“. How about The United States Of The Hysterical?
(Fox News) An 8-year-old Florida boy was suspended from school after using his finger as a pretend gun while playing cops and robbers with his friends.
Jordan Bennett was suspended for a day after administrators at Harmony Community School in Harmony, Fla., said the gesture was an act of violence, WFTV.com reported.
His mother, Bonnie, told the station she’s concerned that her son may labeled violent with a suspension now on his academic record.
“He had nothing in his hand. It was a finger gun, a pretend gun,” Bonnie Bennett said. “He didn’t threaten violence. He didn’t utter words that were inappropriate. He made a sound and used his fingers and that was it.”
How else is one to play cops and robbers? I suppose the boys could have played cowboys and indians….oh, wait, raaaaacist. GIs and jihadists? Na, that would be Islamaphobic. The only thing left is for the boys to play with imaginary dolls.
Gotta love it: “an act of violence”. With a finger. These people are nuts. Fortunately, the school board for Osceola County thought the suspension was idiotic, though they can’t really discuss the case, and lots of people showed up to the school board meeting Tuesday night in support of Jordan.

Ezra Klein wonders why the GOP doesn’t ditch the hard right. The vast majority of articles and opinion pieces are, unsurprisingly, ant-GOP, being that the major media votes 90% Democrat. House Republicans are failing Americans in their effort to kill Obamacare
AMERICANS’ RESPECT for their Congress has, sad to say, diminished in recent years. But citizens still expect a minimal level of competence and responsibility: Pay the bills and try not to embarrass us in front of the world.
By those minimal standards, this Congress is failing. More specifically, the Republican leaders of the House of Representatives are failing. They should fulfill their basic duties to the American people or make way for legislators who will.
We don’t come to that view as rabid partisans. On many of the issues stalemating Washington, we find plenty of blame to go around. We’ve criticized President Obama’s reluctance to pursue entitlement reform. The last time the country reached the debt ceiling, we urged both sides to compromise on revenue and spending in the interest of long-term fiscal soundness.
You’re welcome to read the rest of this, it’s quite amusing in its partisan view. It fails to mention that the Democrat controlled Senate has failed to pass a budget since Obama took the oath of office. Didn’t they promise to pass a budget this year during the previous budget debt ceiling negotiations. All we’ve had are continuing resolutions since they refuse to put their budget priorities on the table.
Every budget Mr. Obama has placed on the table has been utterly shot down by the Democrat controlled Senate. Except for this year’s. Which was very late. As usual. And which Harry Reid simply tabled without a vote.
As for embarrassing us in front of the world, one only has to look to the recent Syria debacle. The best he could do was cobble together a coalition of…France. Which was backing away from getting involved. And it took Vladimir Putin to save Obama’s chestnuts. He started out with gaffes involving sending a Churchill bust back to the U.K., insulting the British Press, the foolish “reset” button to Russia, and giving the Queen Of England an iPod with pics and vids of….Obama. He left our people to die in Benghazi. He ran guns into Mexico without telling the government of Mexico, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of Mexican citizens. Trotted out “starting with 1967 lines” regarding Israel-Palestinian negotiations. Blew off NATO ally Poland over the missile shield. Blew off the Iranian Green Revolution, as well as most of the Arab Spring. Till he threw Egypt’s leader Hosni Mubarak under the bus, leading to the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood. His Sec of State Hillary Clinton called Assad a “reformer”. Now Obama wants him gone. And Assad is thumbing his nose at Obama.
That list can go on and on, I’m sure you have your favorite blunder/gaffe/embarrassment. Fortunately, Obama’s NSA will be there to read your criticisms of Obama are. Have fun with your IRS audit.

Has anyone told the uber-politicized head of the DOJ?
(Raleigh N&O) Gov. Pat McCrory on Monday called the U.S. Justice Department’s lawsuit against North Carolina’s voting law “overreach and without merit.â€
“I firmly believe we’ve done the right thing. I believe this is good law. And I strongly disagree with the action that the attorney general has taken,†McCrory told reporters.
The governor, dressed more casually than normal after his visit to the N.C. Zoo earlier in the day, struck a defiant tone in his remarks. He cast the legal battle as a matter of state’s rights, saying he would “defend our right to have common sense laws right here in North Carolina.â€
McCrory called the move political and fired back at President Barack Obama, citing a video — from a year ago — showing the president presenting an identification card to vote in Chicago. “I believe if showing a voter ID is good enough and fair enough for our own president in Illinois, it’s good enough for the people in North Carolina,†he said. “I think it is obviously influenced by national politics since the Justice Department ignores similar laws in other blue states.â€

(Fox News) The sales pitches for and against ObamaCare have all been made. It’s now up to Americans to judge whether the law works as advertised, as the so-called insurance “exchanges†launch Tuesday.
Against the backdrop of the aggressive congressional showdown over ObamaCare — and partial shutdown of the federal government — Tuesday is the day that Americans can finally log on to the insurance-purchasing websites to take a test drive and decide for themselves.
Exactly what will happen when millions attempt to buy insurance on the federal and state-based websites remains uncertain — considering the well-documented software glitches in the prelude to enrollment day.
Yet broader questions also will be have to answered before federally subsidized coverage begins on Jan. 1, 2014.
Among the issues is whether premium costs will be higher or lower compared with customers’ existing policies, and will Americans’ confusion about mandatory changes to the U.S. health care system become clear. Perhaps the ultimate question: Will the country benefit when an estimated 48 million uninsured Americans get access to coverage or will ObamaCare be the job-killing “train wreck†critics say it will be?

At the heart of it all is the notion that Congress has effectively exempted themselves from this. Nor will the people at the White House or Supreme Court have to obtain it. If it’s not good enough for them, why is it good enough for the rest of us?

House Democrats lash out at GOP over shutdown
Visibly angry and at times raising their voices, House Democrats slammed Republicans for sending Washington into shutdown mode.
A last-minute move by the House GOP to seek a conference with the Senate on a continuing resolution ensured that the government shut down early Tuesday.
“What the speaker is doing is doubling and tripling down [on] a path that it was always intended to take us to shutting down government,†Pelosi said. “They have wiggled this way and that to keep being very resourceful to come up with ways to shut down government. Because as [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid said, they don’t believe in government. They’re anti-government idealoges.â€
Right, because we want zero government. Where’s the sarcasm tag on this keyboard? Sadly, I can hear her shrill voice shrieking out those lines. It gets better
Pelosi said it wasn’t just about Obamacare.
“This is bigger than the Affordable Care Act,†she said. “This is their way of saying we’re going to have a new order here.â€
Oooooh, a “new order”. Has she been spending time in Colorado as of late? Well, I suppose it’s not all that hard to get a contact high if one wanders into Berkley.
She referred to a quote by George Washington, in which he warned against a political party at war with its country.
“This is a proxy fight for really the debate on the extent of government and that has been a debate in the history of our country,†Pelosi said. “But to say no government, that’s what President Washington cautioned against.â€
Ah, so now the GOP is at war with America. But, don’t worry, these aren’t “insults” like when Republicans say Senate Dems are lazy.
I did appreciate that someone included a photo of Pelosi looking a bit wild eyed and need of a good lie down, as they say in jolly old England. Steny Hoyer seems to be thinking “the sedatives are sure taking awhile to kick in”.

They’ve only had 3+ years to get this done
(Reuters) The U.S. government on Thursday announced new delays in rolling out President Barack Obama’s healthcare reform, saying small business and Spanish-language health insurance enrollment services would not begin on October 1 as planned.
The postponements amount to a few weeks out of a months-long enrollment period aimed at signing up millions of uninsured Americans for health benefits. But they add to expectations of a slow start to the landmark social program which remains under attack by Republican leaders and faces formidable technical hurdles for states and the federal government.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said employers with 50 or fewer workers will not be able to sign their staff up for private insurance in federally operated exchanges until a month later, November 1, because of technical problems.
The White House also said online Spanish-language enrollment for Hispanics, an important Obama constituency who make up about one-third of the 47 million uninsured in the country, will also not be available until sometime between October 21 and October 28. Spanish speakers will still be able to enroll through a call center or enrollment specialists known as “navigators.”
How many of those are illegal and legal immigrants, none of which should be eligible in the least?
