Whoa! Washington Post Blames Hamas For Current Fighting

I must say, this piece by the Washington Post Editorial Board surprised the heck out of me. Rarely should we expect them to take a position defending Israel in such a manner. This just isn’t done in Liberal World. On the WP web front page it is entitled “Hamas’s depraved strategy”, with the subtag “Much of the world blames Israel for killing Palestinians, but Hamas put them at risk.”

The U.S. should push for the disarming of Hamas in Gaza-Israel cease-fire

THE DISTINGUISHING feature of the latest war between Israel and Hamas is “offensive tunnels,” as the Israeli army calls them. As of early Wednesday, 28 had been uncovered in Gaza, and nearly half extend into Israel, according to Israeli officials. The tunnels are the reason that the government of Benjamin Netanyahu decided last weekend to launch a ground invasion of Gaza, and they explain why that operation has strong support from Israelis in spite of the relatively heavy casualties it has inflicted. Most significantly, the tunnels show why it has been difficult to reach a cease-fire and why any accord must forge a new political and security order in Gaza.

Hamas’s offensive tunnels should not be confused with the burrows it has dug under Gaza’s border with Egypt to smuggle money, consumer goods and military equipment. The newly discovered structures have only one conceivable purpose: to launch attacks inside Israel. Three times in recent days, Hamas fighters emerged from the tunnels in the vicinity of Israeli civilian communities, which they clearly aimed to attack. The concrete-lined structures are stocked with materials, such as handcuffs and tranquilizers, that could be used on hostages. Other tunnels in northern Gaza are designed for the storage and firing of missiles at Israeli cities.

The editorial goes on to note the cost of building these tunnels, suggested to be $1 million per, money that could be better spent on infrastructure and enriching the lives of Gazans. They use massive amounts of concrete, which could, again, be used for infrastructure. Is it any wonder that Israel had been blockading most concrete, before international pressure forced them to relent? The tunnels originate in civilian areas, including a hospital.

The depravity of Hamas’s strategy seems lost on much of the outside world, which — following the terrorists’ script — blames Israel for the civilian casualties it inflicts while attempting to destroy the tunnels. While children die in strikes against the military infrastructure that Hamas’s leaders deliberately placed in and among homes, those leaders remain safe in their own tunnels. There they continue to reject cease-fire proposals, instead outlining a long list of unacceptable demands.

Obviously, this blaming of the real perpetrators, Hamas, has driven the Israel and Jew hating left nuts in the comments. There’s nothing that can be written or said that would allow the Leftists to assign blame to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization.

…Instead, any political accord should come after a cease-fire and be negotiated with the Palestinian leadership of Mahmoud Abbas. It should link opening of the borders and other economic concessions to the return to Gaza of the security forces of the Palestinian Authority, the disarmament of Hamas and elections for a new government.

The WP notes a poll that Gazans are fed up with Hamas’ rule, and they deserve a government that “invest in schools, health clinics, and houses”. Unfortunately, the people of Gaza voted for Hamas the first time, when they had a chance to move towards a much less incendiary government. There’s no guarantee that they would choose different next time.

Woman Denied Reproductive Health Thanks To Obama L.A. Visit

Having solved all the problems in the world, Mr. Obama headed to Los Angeles Wednesday for a bunch of high toned fancy to do fundraisers, and the dock was off-limit to civilians

(The Blaze) Witnesses say a pregnant woman in labor was prevented by authorities from crossing a Los Angeles street to a hospital Wednesday because the road had been closed for President Barack Obama’s impending motorcade.

The unidentified woman was barred from walking the few hundred feet to the hospital for at least 30 minutes as authorities waited for the president’s motorcade to pass by, witness Carrie Clifford told TheBlaze early Thursday morning.

“I felt bad for her,” Clifford said. “It does happen when Obama comes to L.A. or I’m sure anywhere else. It paralyzes the city, it does make it complicated.”

But, hey, she possibly received the honor of seeing Obama’s massive fossil fueled motorcade!

Headline comes from Balthazor in the comments, who wrote “Here’s a real life example of a woman being denied access to reproductive health care and look who’s behind it.”

Meanwhile, many other LA residents were less than impressed with Obama being in town yet again

(LA Times) President Obama may rake in the money from fawning donors during his two-day fundraising sweep through Los Angeles this week, but he’s not winning any fans among commuters who, as they do, take to social media to vent.

“Obama is visiting Los Angeles today which means I won’t be home till around 7:30pm due to traffic delays. #SMH” tweeted Twitter user West Coastin’.

“If you’re on the Westside today … don’t get trapped in traffic. Obama’s a’comin!” said Twitter user Byrd.

Two common hashtags that were popping up on local social media ahead of the president’s arrival were #Obamatraffic and #ThanksObama.

Twitter user Lark Anderson blamed the president for being late to work, tweeting: “Today I was late to work because of POTUS #ThanksObama”

But, hey, Obama’s all for the working man/woman!

Obama is expected to attend Democratic National Committee events Wednesday night and Thursday. He is also scheduled to visit Los Angeles Trade Technical College.

The trade college bit is to avoid paying the fee for using Air Force One to travel to fundraisers.

Fake Applicants Easily Sign Up For Ocare

Um, surprise?

(Fox News) Undercover government investigators were able to obtain thousands of dollars in taxpayer subsidies under ObamaCare using fake identities, according to findings being presented to Congress on Wednesday.

The probe by the Government Accountability Office has raised fresh concerns about the ability of the sprawling health care program to prevent or intercept costly fraud schemes. In the case of the GAO investigation, 11 out of 12 applications submitted using “fictitious identities” were accepted, resulting in subsidized health coverage.

Makes one wonder how many fraudulent applications were processed during the (illegally extended) sign up period. And how much money this will cost the Producers.

I don’t usually comment in these posts, but, think about what a President Romney could have done to reduce the scope of Ocare if all those Republicans hadn’t stayed home.

Aussie Possum Is The New Polar Bear Or Something

Having failed with polar bears, which have seen most populations thrive, Warmists now turn their sights to a possum

(SMH) A rare Australian possum is being dubbed the new polar bear of climate change.

Just four white lemuroid ringtail possums have been found in the wild and scientists say the species could soon become the first creature to be wiped out by global warming.

“I think this really should be a wake-up call,” tropical rainforests expert and James Cook University researcher Professor Bill Laurance told AAP.

“We’re arguing this is a better icon for global warming than a polar bear because it typifies the type of biodiversity we will lose in the future.”

This is essentially a recycled story from 5 years ago. Warmists never forget a good meme.

I have to wonder how they survived during the previous Holocene warm periods, several of which were much warmer than today. Of course, there is also a real problem for the lemuroids in the form of deforestation and selective logging, which, as usual, is ignored in favor of the global warming/climate change hysteria.

Worst “Best Barbecue In America” List Ever

Well, maybe not ever. I bet we could find a worse one. But this is pretty silly.

(HuffPost) America has a serious love affair with barbecue. It’s an adoration so profound, the people were unable to leave it in the South from whence it came. You no longer have to live in Alabama or make a trip to Texas to eat great ribs, brisket, or awesome BBQ sides. These days, you can get great barbecue in the center of Manhattan or a pulled pork sandwich worthy of a food coma in the Golden City.

A look at Open Table’s 2014 30 Best BBQ Restaurants Diners’ Choice Awards is proof of that — only a few restaurants on the list are actually located in the South. There are restaurants from both coasts, and a good amount hail from Chicago of all places. Fear not, this doesn’t mean that the South isn’t still top when it comes to barbecue. A more likely explanation would be that great Southern barbecue doesn’t exist at places that take Open Table reservations.

Therein lies the problem: this is based on Open Table reservations. Some of the best spots, especially throughout the areas in the South and Midwest known for barbecue, either take no reservations or do not use Open Table.

Let’s be clear, anyone who doesn’t understand that barbecue is only a noun should not be allowed to have an opinion on barbecue. I grew up in the North, where they would talk about barbecuing. Having lived more than half my life in North Carolina, we understand that the word is never a verb. Only a noun.

There are only 5 places in real barbecue country. Four in Texas, one in Oklahoma. The rest are in NY, California, Maryland, and other areas. Granted, many of them may be very good. I’ve seen Dinosaur Bar-B-Que on one of the food shows I love to watch, and it is supposed to be good. But nothing can touch what you’ll get in a good local spot down South/Midwest.  Memphis, Kansas City, the different types of Carolina BBQ, Georgia style, Texas. Those are your BBQ meccas.

And, no, I’m not going overboard. BBQ is serious business, and discussing the best is like putting the Crips and the Bloods in the same room for intensity.

BTW, I’ve kinda gotten in to lots of those cooking shows on the Travel Channel, Cooking, and Destination America, along with a few others. I love shows like Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, Man Vs Food, Food Paradise, BBQ Pitmasters, and others. Very interesting, and a welcome diversion from all the rest of the garbage on TV. Lots of other interesting things, like the Buying homes series on Destination America, things on Travel like waterparks.

Anyhow, if you want real barbecue, come down and visit, I’ll take you to places that will blow your tastebuds away.

Evil, Mean Republicans To Chop $1 Billion From Obama Illegal Kids Request

Horrible, terrible, un-caring, super meanie people!

(The Hill) Senate Democrats will chop $1 billion from President Obama’s emergency spending request to secure the Texas border but have rejected Republican demands to change legal protections for child immigrants from Central America.

Senate Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) told colleagues Tuesday that she will move a bill with $2.7 billion in emergency spending for the border, substantially less than the $3.7 billion requested by Obama, according to Democratic sources.

Oh, um, I guess it’s Democrats doing this. Mr. Obama and his minions have spent a lot of time bombarding Republicans for refusing to pony up the full $3.7 billion, yet, here we have Democrats in the Democrat run Senate refusing to fund the request fully. It’s actually more like a $1.840 billion cut

The legislation will not include language demanded by Republicans and some centrist Democrats giving the administration more flexibility to swiftly deport children from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and other noncontiguous countries, the Democrats said.

Hmm. Well, fortunately, all the money is going to deal with the border problem this year (stick around for more on that last part)

Mikulski will attach $615 million in emergency funding to combat wildfires and $225 million for Israel’s Iron Dome rocket defense system, according to one Democratic source familiar with the bill.

While those are worthy goals, they deserve to be in a separate bill. Of course, Dems are blaming this on Republicans, who have questioned the need for the total amount, and demanded changes to the 2008 reauthorization law (passed by a Dem congress) about child illegals from Other Than Mexican nations. The original request was $3.7 billion, with another $600 million for fighting wildfires, so, if we do the math, this means that the Democrats are reducing the $3.7 billion request by $1.840 billion.

Here’s the kicker

Obama’s $3.7 billion ask suffered a political blow Monday when the Congressional Budget Office reported that only $25 million would be spent in fiscal year 2014, which ends Sept. 30.

The budget office projected only $25 million would be needed by the Department of Health and Human Services next month and $3.4 billion would be spent in 2015 with the remainder needed over the next five years.

That’s right, campers, what Obama has called an emergency, a crisis, seems to be anything but when it comes to actually spending the money. Let’s dig deeper, per The Blaze

“CBO analysis suggests that only $25 million out of the $4.3 billion request will be spent this year. What does that mean?” (Senator Jeff) Sessions asked. “It means we ought to slow down, and there is no basis to demand a $4.3 billion increase in spending, emergency spending.”

Obama has requested $3.7 billion for the border, and another $600 million to fight wildfires. But according to CBO, just $25 million would be spent during the rest of FY 2014, which ends in September. Most of the rest of it would be spent in 2015, and spending would continue through 2020.

In addition, all of the spending in 2014 would take place in the Department of Health and Human Services. Obama’s plan would give the Department of Homeland Security $1.1 billion, but none of that money would be used until FY 2015.

Not much of a crisis if most of the money is slated to be spent next year, and the following 5. Harken back to the Stimulus, which was needed because otherwise economic doom, yet, most was not spent immediately, but in 2010-2012, which, incidentally, was after the recession officially ended in July 2009. This almost seems like yet another Obama slush fund.

Washington Post: Say, This Obama Guy Is A Pretty Passive President

Had it been a Republican acting in the manner we’ve seen from Obama, vis a vis foreign policy, members of the liberal media, including the Washington Post, would have excoriated that Republican. With Obama, they simply wag a finger with a tsk tsk tsk. Even so, it’s interesting to note that the Washington Post Editorial Board notes Obama passivity and weakness

Syrian death toll and extremist threat increases, but the U.S. does little

Is it American which is doing little, or this President? One of the dangers is finding fault with America for the actions, or, rather, lack thereof from Team Obama, particularly Obama himself, who seems to have a singular lack of vision on foreign policy, nor plans, nor does he really seem to, frankly, give a damn. He doesn’t seem to want to take the field himself. He’s disinterested.

Anyhow, the WP spends a few paragraphs discussing the issues in Syria, linked to the issues in Iraq, and moves into

The Obama administration, however, appears to be doing little to address this crisis. Secretary of State John F. Kerry is camped out in Cairo in pursuit of a Gaza cease-fire, but no senior envoy is trying to work out a political formula that would unite moderate Syrian and Iraqi forces against the Islamic State. President Obama, who has devoted a large part of his schedule in recent weeks to political fundraising, had nothing to say about Syria or Iraq during recent appearances to discuss Gaza and Ukraine.

Obama has little to say about most things foreign policy related, and little to offer when it comes to any domestic issue beyond his talking points about building bridges and roads and a 21st century economy, the same things he’s been yammering about since 2009. Mostly from the fundraising trail.

Even more disturbing are reports that the sole initiative undertaken by the administration on Syria since the collapse of an ill-conceived peace conference last winter is foundering. According to The Post’s David Ignatius and the Wall Street Journal, a promised $500 million effort to arm and train moderate rebels has emerged from the Pentagon as a pathetically underpowered scheme that would produce a force of just 2,300 over 18 months — and might not begin until next year.

Here’s the kicker on that

Senior congressional staff consulted about the plan told the administration to go back to the drawing board. Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), usually an administration ally, pointed out at a hearing that the White House was making little effort to sell its own policy. Meanwhile, the Free Syrian Army forces the administration proposes to support are steadily losing ground to the regime and the Islamists. There’s a real risk that by the time the program gets off the ground — if it ever does — there will be no units left to support.

One has to wonder whether this is a case of Obama simply not giving a damn, or whether it is a case of Obama doing his Ramses schtick: you know, “so let it be written, so let it be done”, where he speaks and thinks people are going to run around like kids on Red Bull to make His Pronouncements come to fruition. Which never happens.

It’s not easy at this late stage for the United States to intervene in Syria or Iraq in a way that would be constructive. But if one principle seems obvious, it is that moderate forces willing to fight the Islamic State should be aided — and quickly. Foremost among these are Syria’s secular rebels. The independent militia of Iraqi Kurdistan, which faces the Islamic State along a 900-mile front, is another clear candidate. Mr. Obama’s decision to stand back from Syria and Iraq has done much to create the present threat to the United States. Continued passivity will only make it worse.

Is it passivity, or just that Obama couldn’t give a rats patootie about these issues? Perhaps he realized that he’s just not good at this foreign policy stuff, so he’s decided that he can’t be bothered. No matter what the reason, the world sees a United States Of America that is unengaged, unreliable, and can’t be counted on.
