Darn it: Greenhouse gas levels in atmosphere hit new high and temps still refuse to rise

Bummer

(Yahoo News) Surging levels of carbon dioxide sent greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to a new record in 2013, while oceans, which absorb the emissions, have become more acidic than ever, the UN said on Tuesday.

“We know without any doubt that our climate is changing and our weather is becoming more extreme due to human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels,” said Michel Jarraud, the head of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) that released a report on the issue on Tuesday.

And still Warmists won’t give up fossil fuels usage themselves.

“We are running out of time,” he warned.

We’ve been hearing that for decades.

Concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane and nitrous oxide all broke fresh records in 2013, said the report.

Global concentrations of CO2, the main culprit in global warming, soared to 396 parts per million last year, or 142 percent of pre-industrial levels — defined as before 1750.

And yet, by all real world data measurements, there has been no statistically significant warming anywhere between 12 and 26 years. Not happening at surface level, lower atmosphere, sea surface, upper atmosphere, tropics. Until the data is massaged, of course. Warmist computer models are failures.

When It Comes To Obama’s New Climate Rules, Guess Who Wins The Most?

Is it those women, treated like hothouse flowers in need of rescuing by Warmists, who are constantly held up as being victims of “climate change”? Kids? Animals? Nope

US climate policy winners and losers: lawyers come out on top

In the wake of the EPA’s clean power plan, a host of lawsuits indicate that the costs and benefits of President Obama’s climate initiatives will not be shared equally

There will be some other winners and losers, such as “clean energy” companies, who’ll repeat the rewards of tax subsidies and loans (before going out of business after hiring a tenth of the workers originally proposed). They’ll be winners. Losers will be companies like coal companies. Oh, and the American people, who will see their cost of living skyrocket. And then

Regardless of the long-term effects of the EPA’s power-sector proposal, it’s increasingly clear who its first beneficiaries will be: lawyers. The EPA already faces a lawsuit filed last month by a dozen heavily coal-reliant states. Murray Energy, the largest privately held coal-mining company in the country, filed suit in March.

As such litigation illustrates, the impact of Obama’s climate initiatives will play out over time, and not for the benefit of “all of the above”. And, as similar lawsuits will undoubtedly work their way across several affected industries, it’s clear that the struggle for climate resilience will, at least to some extent, play out in the courts.

The policies will make it much, much easier to sue. So far, most “climate change” lawsuits are either dropped or lose in court. Now, the lawyers, who are big donors to Democrats and Democrat causes, will be big, big winners. Surprise!

Dems Get Their Wish To Advance Free Speech Limiting Amendment

I mentioned yesterday that I hoped Republicans would vote to allow the motion to proceed, that way we can get to debate to highlight just how much Democrats hate the 1st Amendment, and they did

(The Hill)  The Senate on Monday advanced a constitutional amendment meant to reverse two recent Supreme Court decisions on campaign spending.

Republicans are likely to vote against the amendment when it comes up for a final vote, but by allowing it to proceed, ensured that it will tie up the Senate for most of the week.

More than 20 Republicans joined Democrats in the 79-18 vote advancing the amendment, well over the 60 votes that were needed.

“We should have debate on this important amendment,” Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said before voting for cloture. “The majority should be made to answer why they want to silence critics.”

Darned right. Of course, we know how the majority of the leftist media will cover this. Oh, and a cranky, delusional senior citizen continued to be delusional

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said he would gladly debate the issue for as long as Republicans require because the amendment is necessary to keep “dark money” out of politics.

“You’re either for campaign spending reform or not,” Reid said ahead of the vote. “This constitutional amendment is what we need to bring sanity back to elections and restore Americans’ confidence in our democracy.”

Uh huh

https://twitter.com/WilliamTeach/status/509050536633827328

And remember when billionaire Tom Steyer offered to donate $100 million to Democrats if they held climate change stuff on the Senate floor? He basically bought Harry Reid and Senate Dems.

Powerline notes

So if Senators and Congressmen want to make sure they have their jobs for life, they can limit spending on campaigns challenging them to zero dollars. They can also ban books and movies that might influence voters in one direction or another–which is exactly what happened in Citizens United. For example, as the ACLU has pointed out, the proposed amendment would give Congress the power to ban the publication or sale of Hillary Clinton’s Hard Choices if she were running for office.

National Review

While the amendment’s policy implications are shrouded in uncertainty, it would mark a significant step away from the nation’s First Amendment tradition that “Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech” and toward a system where incumbent politicians could heavily regulate any speech they deem to “influence elections.”

Of course, this would mean Democrats could restrict their opponents. Republicans would be excoriated if they attempted to actually use the power of this amendment for their own purposes. Not that most would. Nor is the Amendment going anywhere. But, this is what Progressives want. Many say this is just for show, to put Republicans on the defensive, but, just like yesterday, I’ll say Dems really want this to pass, because Progressives are all about bigger and bigger government, putting more and more power in the hands of the central government, and continuously increasing control of citizens, businesses, and every aspect of American life.

More: Democrats are apparently unhappy that Republicans voted to…allow debate

(Politico) The legislation needed 60 votes to advance and Democrats took a cynical view of the 79-18 tally. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said the GOP’s tactic was simply to “stall” because it would eat up limited floor time that Democrats are eyeing for votes aimed at encouraging gender pay equity and raising the minimum wage.

“They know we’re getting out of here fairly shortly and they want to prevent discussion on other very important issues,” said Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). “I would love to be proven wrong. But if the end of this week, we end up getting 67 votes, you can tell me I was too cynical. “

I’m confused: isn’t the point of a procedural vote to attempt to move it forward so it can be debated? Obviously, this was purely a cynical and highly partisan move, not really serious, and now Harry Reid and his fellow clowns will be hoist on their own petards. The GOP should force debate prior to the election.

Whiny Democrats Attack Tom Tillis For “Mansplaining”

This is pretty much the extent of the Dems defense of Kay Hagan.  What little record she has is pathetic and shows that she’s a dupe of Obama, rather than a representative of NC

(Politico) Thom Tillis, the Republican running for a North Carolina Senate seat that could well decide the majority in the Senate, has been pilloried since a debate last week against Sen. Kay Hagan by Democrats who see him as a condescending “man-splainer” who played into gender stereotypes.

But in his first comments on the controversy, the Republican state House speaker was unrepentant in a sit-down interview on the campaign trail, chalking up the firestorm to Democrats playing gender politics to boost Sen. Kay Hagan. “It’s just silly,” he said during a lunch stop this weekend with supporters over barbecue, fried oysters and chicken livers. “We’re talking about the future of the greatest nation on the earth, and this is what we’re going to?”

The attacks began after Tillis, in a paid advertisement, jabbed at the incumbent, a former bank vice president, saying “Math is lost on Sen. Hagan.” Then, in last week’s debate, in which the Republican appeared better prepared overall, Tillis referred to her as “Kay,” even though she continued to refer to him as “Speaker Tillis.”

“We saw women on social media in particular who were bothered by his tone and more than anything they were bothered by his record,” said Sadie Weiner, spokeswoman for Hagan.

I love how Democrats portray women as hothouse flowers who get the vapors over every perceived slight and Need To Be Protected. Good for Tillis for not falling in to the trap.

Bummer: Fire Season Refuses To Cooperate With Warmist Prognostication

Seriously, nothing is going their way. No statistically significant warming for almost 18 years. Land, sea, and air data (non-modified) refuse to cooperate. Hurricane activity refuses to cooperate. Sea rise refuses to cooperate. The Arctic refuses to be ice free. And now

(Washington Times) This year’s below-average wildfire season comes as welcome news for Westerners, but it’s also burning a hole in the environmentalist narrative on climate change.

Although summer isn’t over, and fires are burning in California and Oregon, it has been a mild year in terms of the number of wildfires and acres burned, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

The agency reports that 2.77 million acres have burned this year as of Sept. 5, a decline from the 3.9 million acres that had burned by the same date in 2013 and less than half the 10-year average of 6.2 million acres. The number of fires, 38,451, is also down considerably from the 10-year average of 56,278.

Aw, shucks. This is like watching one of those crazy people who constantly proclaim that the world is about to end this year. Then next year. Year after that.

Apparently, Warmists Haven’t Really Been Trying Up To Now

Warmists are promising the largest climate march in history or something

(UK Guardian) Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to take to the streets of New York, London and eight other cities worldwide in a fortnight to pressure world leaders to take action on global warming, in what organisers claim will be the biggest climate march in history.

Think if the “carbon pollution” increase from all these climate activists and “leaders” taking fossil fueled trips. Here’s comes the quote of the day, possibly of the month and year, when it comes to “climate change”

Ricken Patel, executive director of digital campaign group Avaaz, one of the organisers of the People’s Climate March on 21 September, said the demonstration was intended to send a signal to those world leaders, who are expected to include David Cameron and Barack Obama, though not heads of state from China and India.

“We in the movement, activists, have failed up until this point to put up a banner and say if you care about this, now is the time, here is the place, let’s come together, to show politicians the political power that is out there on there. Our goal is to mobilise the largest climate change mobilisation in history and the indications are we’re going to get there,” he told the Guardian.

I’m at a loss for words on that one, it is so deluded that even a facepalm GIF would make no sense of this nonsense, of never having really done anything in the 26+ years (almost half of which has seen no statistically significant warming) they’ve been spreading awareness. Political power? Warmist organizations, public and private, receive gobs of taxpayer money every year. How many professionally made signs will we see?

Anyhow, supposedly 100k people will descend on New York City

“Politicians all over the world cite a lack of public support as a reason not to take bold action against climate change. So on 21 September we will meet this moment with unprecedented public mobilisations in cities around the world, including thousands of people on the streets of London.

“Our goal is simple – to demonstrate the groundswell of demand that exists for ambitious climate action,” they write.

Warmists like to point out that this or that place is tiny, compared to the total Earth, when their predictions backfire. Well, even if a million march around the world, that is just a fraction of the world population, so, according to Warmist doctrine, it is meaningless.

BTW, if you’re thinking that Avaaz is a massive far left, organization, you’d be right (more here)

Avaaz.org was co-founded by Res Publica, a “community of public sector professionals dedicated to promoting good governance, civic virtue and deliberative democracy”,[4] andMoveOn.org, an American non-profit progressive public policy advocacy group.[5][6] It was also supported by Service Employees International Union, a founding partner, and GetUp!, an Australian non-profit campaigning organisation.

All far left groups. They’re a far left lobbying group masquerading as online activism.

The graphic above comes from Avaaz, part of their London activism. Big Ben is 316 feet tall, so, no hysteria there, eh?

Prayers For Mandy Nagy

Legal Insurrection has the story

Our beloved Mandy Nagy, also known as Liberty Chick, had a stroke yesterday and brain surgery to relieve the pressure today.

I am in touch with Mandy’s mom, who approved me letting people know via Legal Insurrection. Before surgery, Mandy also was able to nod approval with a small smile, her mom tells me.

And an update

Update 7:35 p.m. – Mandy’s mom tells me she is out of surgery, and the surgery went well. I can’t tell you how much I miss Mandy and can’t wait until she gets back. Mandy always was the voice of reason around here in an unreasonable world.

I’ve been following Mandy for quite some time, and have had strokes touch my life in the form of my mother and people I know several times. All my best for her.

NY Times Editorial Board Really Upset Over Texas Voter ID

They note that it is “on trial

Last week, the spotlight turned to the federal court in Corpus Christi, where the Justice Department and several advocacy groups are fighting Texas’ absurdly strict voter-ID law. Passed in 2011 by the Republican-dominated Legislature, the law accepts as proof of identity a concealed-weapon permit but not a student ID card.

Laws like these used to be blocked by Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, which required that the federal government preapprove any voting rules enacted by states and localities with a history of discriminatory voting practices. But in a destructive ruling last year, the Supreme Court struck down Section 5 as unconstitutional.

Of course, the editorial conveniently leaves out relevant information about that ruling. No surprise there.

In the Texas suit, testimony has shown that about 1.2 million eligible voters — including disproportionate numbers of lower-income, black and Latino voters, who tend to vote Democratic — lack a photo ID that would allow them to cast a ballot. Some never had the necessary underlying documents, such as a birth certificate; others cannot afford the time or money it takes to track them down.

In other words, the NYTEB is upset, along with Left leaning groups, that illegal aliens would not be able to vote in American elections.

Texas says it has made it easier to get a photo ID by providing for a free “Election Identification Certificate.” Apparently, Texans haven’t gotten the memo: as of Friday, fewer than 300 people statewide had managed to obtain a certificate.

Is it Texas’ fault that Democrat voters are stupid and lazy?

Rather than find a way to appeal to a wider swath of voters, Republican lawmakers rig the game with pointless obstacles to voting. The courts are finally catching on, but in the meantime, many of the nation’s most vulnerable citizens are shut out of the democratic process.

I’m waiting for the editorial which decries the requirement for voter ID in heavily Democrat voting Hawaii, along with the home states Obama and Biden. In fact, the majority of states require some sort of ID, though many do not require a photo ID. And 82% of American citizens approve of voter ID requirements.

Interestingly, the thing that interested me with this editorial was the subhead showing on the web front page and opinion page, which reads

An absurdly strict law that accepts as proof of identity a concealed-weapon permit but not a student identification card is being challenged in court.

That was totally ignored within the editorial itself. But, I personally agree with this. Neither requires that the holder be a Texas citizen. Many college students in Texas reside in other states, and there is no requirement for Texas residency to obtain a Texas CCP. Furthermore, in many states one can obtain a state ID without residency. I have an expired Florida ID, obtained during spring break in Daytona. I, along with a bunch of friends, obtained the ID in order to get into all the bars free (except during Happy Hour), as all the drinking establishments waived the cover charge for locals.

Voter ID is not perfect. There will still be ways around it. But, it is better than nothing in attempting to establish who the voter is. What is needed is a system that says “yes, I am me, and I am fully eligible to vote in this precinct.”

Liberals were all for Doing Something when they lost the presidential elections in 2000 and 2004. Now? Not so much.

Mitch McConnell: Democrats To Hold Vote Against Free Speech… Update: Udall Publishes

Senator Mitch McConnell calls this an assault on free speech

(Politico) hroughout August, senators had the opportunity to travel around their states and listen to the concerns of their constituents. The American people have a lot on their minds these days — important issues they expect the Democrat-run Senate to address: things like high unemployment, threats of terrorism, rising health care costs and the ongoing crisis at the border.

Unfortunately, hardly any of those things will be on the Senate’s agenda when it returns Monday.

That’s because the Democrats who control the Senate say they’re more interested in repealing the free speech protections the First Amendment guarantees to all Americans. Their goal is to shut down the voices of their critics at a moment when they fear the loss of their fragile Senate majority. And to achieve it, they’re willing to devote roughly half of the remaining legislative days before November to this quixotic anti-speech gambit.

The proposal they want to consider would empower incumbent politicians to write the rules on who gets to speak and who doesn’t. And while no one likes to be criticized, the way for Senate Democrats to avoid it is to make better arguments, or even better, to come up with better ideas — not shut up their constituents.

To be more clear, Harry Reid and the Democrats are planning a procedural vote today on a proposed Constitutional Amendment which would let Congress write the rules to regulate campaign spending, which reads, in its latest incarnation

“Section 1. To advance democratic self-government and political equality, and to protect the integrity of government and the electoral process, Congress and the States may regulate and set reasonable limits on the raising and spending of money by candidates and others to influence elections.”

“Section 2. Congress and the States shall have power to implement and enforce this article by appropriate legislation, and may distinguish between natural persons and corporations or other artificial entities created by law, including by prohibiting such entities from spending money to influence elections.”

“Section 3. Nothing in this article shall be construed to grant Congress or the States the power to abridge the freedom of the press.”

What’s missing is that Congress itself solicits these bribes, er, campaign donations. Notice that they are good enough to say they won’t abridge freedom of the press. What of religion and free speech? Peaceable protest and redress of grievance? Of course, simply passing this legislation would, in fact, violate the 1st Amendment to start with.

Not surprisingly, a proposal as bad as the one Senate Democrats are pushing won’t even come close to garnering the votes it would need to pass. But to many Democrats, that’s just the point. They want this proposal to fail because they think that somehow would help them on Election Day — they think it will help drive to the polls more left-wing voters who don’t like having to defend their ideas.

While I certainly agree with Senator McConnell, he is missing the fact that it’s not just about getting the vote out, but that Democrats actually want to do this. They want this Amendment passed, so that they can regulate donations, activities, and such for private entities on the political Right in every possible manner. He certainly understands, as he writes, that virtually everything the Democrats have offered up for vote this year has been designed to fail, in order to Blame Republicans, a brazen bit of hyper-partisanship.

Forty six Democrats have signed on to this amendment, which will never pass, since it requires a two thirds “aye” vote. Republicans should not filibuster or stop this vote in any way. In fact, they should allow it to go up for an official vote, in order to put Democrats on record as voting to limit the 1st Amendment.

(Wall Street Journal) The critics also ignore that Citizens United and McCutcheon make it easier for the unions on which the Democrats rely to spend money on elections. Unions outspent businesses by more than 2 to 1 in 2013. If money corrupts, then one would expect Mr. Reid and his colleagues to condemn the “corrupt” influence of unions in politics. And these Democrats presumably would brand liberal billionaire Tom Steyer’s pledge to commit his political-action committee to spend $100 million to defeat Republicans in 2014 as especially corrupting—but Mr. Reid has instead welcomed the support.

Democrats claim that the Supreme Court has made politicians and political parties less accountable by encouraging donations involving outside interest groups. Outside of what? Democrat fundraising circles? Their actual fear is that less traditional candidates—including outsiders—will have the funding necessary to challenge incumbents in primaries without the blessing of party elders.

Strange how Reid and Democrats have no problem with money coming from outside groups and corporations into their own coffers, wouldn’t you say?

More: via Memeorandum, Senators Udall and Sanders try and paint this proposed amendment at pro-free speech

No single issue is more important to the needs of average Americans. If we cannot control billionaires’ power to buy elections, the people elected to office will be responsive to the needs of the rich and powerful, rather than the needs of everyone else.

When the Supreme Court says, for purposes of the First Amendment, that corporations are people, that writing checks from the company’s bank account is constitutionally protected speech and that attempts to impose reasonable restrictions on campaign ads are unconstitutional, our democracy is in grave danger.

Americans’ right to free speech should not be proportionate to their bank accounts. This is why we have introduced a constitutional amendment to reform our broken campaign-finance system.

I call on the Democrat Party to immediately refuse to take donations from anyone other than private individuals who make $100k or less. No money from industries, guilds, unions, fat cat donors, nor companies. If they think the money is so bad, this should be no problem, right?

Let’s just ignore all the industry money he has received, oh, and look, 60% of his individual contributions come from “large individual contributors”, as opposed to small ones.

Let’s also note that the Constitution, and the Bill Of Rights, makes absolutely no distinction between individuals and entities like companies, corporations, interest groups, etc.
