High Flying EPA Head Gina McCarthy: Doing Nothing On Climate Change Is “Scary”

Scary, you guys!

(Washington Post) Climate change predictions can be scary, and political opposition to climate action is fierce. But EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy says she can’t help but be optimistic about the future.

McCarthy, speaking at the American Meteorological Society (AMS) annual meeting in Phoenix on Wednesday, struck a decidedly positive tone.

“If there is ever a challenge where the U.S. can shine and provide leadership, it is the challenge of climate change,” she said.

In her speech, McCarthy described the goals of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan: 1) reducing carbon pollution that contributes to climate change 2) preparing communities for climate impacts and 3) leading the world in addressing climate change.

“The real danger and the real economic problem we face is not taking action,” McCarthy said.

She later goes on to say, when uber-Warmist Jason Samenow sat down with her

I don’t want people to be scared. In fact, I’m trying to make them not scared. The scary thing is doing nothing. Recognizing and acting is what will keep them safe.  I think that the fact that they’re already facing impacts has changed the dynamic considerably.  People understand that things have changed. Once you embrace the problem, the solutions are there.

Is there a need for discussion on “not wanting people to be scared”, when cult does everything they can to build fear within people? She then goes on to say in order not to be scared, action must be taken. Of course, that action includes massive increases in governmental power over people, private entities, and the economy, along with increases in the cost of living due to taxation. Those are the solutions. Strangely, the people who have “embraced the problem” mostly refuse to implement other solutions, such as reducing their own carbon footprints. Where was Gina? Phoenix, Arizona. How’d she get there? I believe we can say with 100% confidence that she took a fossil fueled automobile trip to the airport, then a fossil fueled flight to Phoenix, then a fossil fueled auto trip to the conference. All on the taxpayer dime, BTW.

As a sidebar, at least she’s not so progressive that she wants to ban all Skeptics from offering their views

When newspapers say they’ve got to have varying opinions, well then put 100 positive scientists who say climate change is happening and do half of a scientist who doesn’t believe it.  Balance isn’t giving equal weight to a few.  I need people to speak out, people to work in their own communities to make it a safer discussion to have, and make it a more productive conversation.

For her, a productive conversation is limiting those who disagree.

Things The NY Times Finds Important: Free Speech On License Plates

Following in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attacks, there has been quite a bit of discussion regarding freedom of expression, ranging the gamut from total expression to waffling to “yeah, but”. What concerns the NY Times?

A License to Say Anything?

SPECIALTY license plates — which bear the logo of a college or a sports team, or a slogan like “Save Our Seas” or “Stop Child Abuse” — bring in lots of money for state governments, as well as the schools, nonprofit groups, professional organizations and other entities that sponsor them. But these vehicular tags have also become a new frontier in debates over freedom of speech.

This is the Big Opinion Piece of the day, highlighted at the top of the opinion pages in the spot for the primary piece of the day. License plates.

The United States Supreme Court is hearing a lawsuit by the Sons of Confederate Veterans. It wants Texas to issue a specialty plate showing the Confederate battle flag, which a state panel rejected. The group argues that if Texas allows plates that express some opinions, it also must allow the battle flag, even if the symbol offends many people. Anything less, the group says, amounts to discrimination against its viewpoint, in violation of the First Amendment.

A similar case from North Carolina might also go up to the Supreme Court. In 2011, the State Legislature approved a specialty plate with the slogan “Choose Life.” Those who seek this specialized plate pay $25, $10 of which goes to the state’s highway fund and $15 of which goes to a pregnancy counseling organization. But when the Legislature refused to issue an abortion-rights plate, the American Civil Liberties Union sued.

The actual piece is not a bad one, providing interesting discourse without being uber biased, and takes the position that the Confederate Flag plate is improper, while the Choose Life one is A-OK, concluding that while a citizen has the choice to put a particular plate on their vehicle, people may assume that the State approves of the message. For writers Corey Brettschneider and Nelson Tebbe, the use of the Confederate battle flag is just too much, being an “An implied endorsement of a racist message”.

Furthermore, the state has an interest in disallowing certain messages on personalized plates. And the do. The even rescind some plates after people realize what the message means.

Of course, let’s not forget that the NY Times refused to publish any of the Charlie Hebdo cartoons.

Anyhow, regardless of taking a minor issue and magnifying it on the pages of what is considered the leading American newspaper, and one of the most important worldwide, perhaps license plates have gone too far. Here in North Carolina there are 156 specialized plates to choose from. Schools, sports, military, fraternities, animal lovers, arts, lighthouses, NASCAR, and so much more. And, yes, there is actually a Sons Of Confederate Veterans one with the battle flag. There are even plates featuring the logos of colleges in other states, because they are part of the ACC. That’s just silly. But, the state makes lots of money off the plates.

There are even some religious organizations, such as the Sudan Temple.

The Supreme Court could therefore side with Texas, but also with the abortion-rights supporters in the North Carolina case. This would require a balancing approach, holding that the state’s comparatively weak interest in denying the pro-choice plate is outweighed by the group’s interest in expression. Nothing in this approach would deny North Carolina’s ability to transmit anti-abortion messages in other ways, as it already may do.

Two thoughts. First, states should stay out of the business of political messages on license plates, in regards to graphics. Second, I think NC should allow abortion rights plates if they are going to allow “choose life” plates, that way we can see who the nutjobs are who think murdering an unborn child is a “right”.

Oh, a third, which is also mention in the opinion piece: if a citizen wants a certain political message on a vehicle, purchase a bumper sticker.

David Brooks: No, We’re Not All Charlie Hebdo

I rarely agree with David Brooks, the NY Times’ token conservative, who is less conservative than your average RINO. However, he makes a hell of a good point

The journalists at Charlie Hebdo are now rightly being celebrated as martyrs on behalf of freedom of expression, but let’s face it: If they had tried to publish their satirical newspaper on any American university campus over the last two decades it wouldn’t have lasted 30 seconds. Student and faculty groups would have accused them of hate speech. The administration would have cut financing and shut them down.

Public reaction to the attack in Paris has revealed that there are a lot of people who are quick to lionize those who offend the views of Islamist terrorists in France but who are a lot less tolerant toward those who offend their own views at home. (snip)

Americans may laud Charlie Hebdo for being brave enough to publish cartoons ridiculing the Prophet Muhammad, but, if Ayaan Hirsi Ali is invited to campus, there are often calls to deny her a podium.

So this might be a teachable moment. As we are mortified by the slaughter of those writers and editors in Paris, it’s a good time to come up with a less hypocritical approach to our own controversial figures, provocateurs and satirists.

What’s not mentioned by Brooks is that most of the intolerant comes from Liberals, who get Very Upset whenever anyone does anything that might offend them. It’s not their exclusive domain, but, they are the ones who attempt to shut down other people much more often than those on the political right.

The first thing to say, I suppose, is that whatever you might have put on your Facebook page yesterday, it is inaccurate for most of us to claim, Je Suis Charlie Hebdo, or I Am Charlie Hebdo. Most of us don’t actually engage in the sort of deliberately offensive humor that that newspaper specializes in.

Actually, I can say that I do, or at least, used to, when I spent more time blogging about Islamic terrorism, before shifting more towards “climate change”. I, along with over a dozen other blogs, were banned in India due to the a snarky “flush the Koran” photoshop blogburst. I’ve run many of the Charlie Hebdo cartoons, along with others, like the Jyllands-Posten cartoons, many, many times (BTW, the LA Times is calling for defending the freedom of expression, when they had previous trashed freedom of expression regarding the “movie” Innocence of Muslims. Granted, that was an op-ed contributor, but it was printed in same paper). The subhead on my site is “If we don’t believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don’t believe in it at all”. Look it up and see who said it. I’ve been credibly threatened over my previous focus on Islamic terrorism. That did not stop me.

If you try to pull off this delicate balance with law, speech codes and banned speakers, you’ll end up with crude censorship and a strangled conversation. It’s almost always wrong to try to suppress speech, erect speech codes and disinvite speakers.

Interesting, since the NY Times refused to run the Charlie Hebdo cartoons, the same as many other American liberal media outlets. Of course, they do not have the same problem with running anything that is nasty towards Republicans, climate Skeptics, Christians, Jews, Tea Partiers, etc. But, then, while they might get a few threats, those threats would never be serious like those from radical Islamists.

The massacre at Charlie Hebdo should be an occasion to end speech codes. And it should remind us to be legally tolerant toward offensive voices, even as we are socially discriminating.

Good luck with that, David. Progressives will never allow that.

House Votes To Change Obamacare Full Time Work Definition To 40 Hours

This has made most Democrats very unhappy. Obama has already threatened to veto it, and other Democrats are upset that workers might be allowed to work more than 30 hours. No. Seriously

(The Hill) The House on Thursday in a 252-172 vote approved legislation that would waive fees on businesses that do not offer health insurance to employees working fewer than 40 hours per week.

The legislation – which has been at the center of a heavy corporate lobbying campaign – only received 12 Democratic votes. Eighteen Democrats backed the bill during a House vote on the same issue last spring.

No Republicans opposed the measure.

Personally, I’m not so sure 40 is the number. 37 or 38 might make a bit more sense. From a payroll and monitoring point of view, it is much easier to deal with hours numbers like 30, 35, 40, etc. Anyone who has run payroll and had to monitor employee hours knows this, and many also watch hard to make sure that employees do not break the 40 hour mark in order to limit overtime pay. Hence, many keep full timers to 38-39 hours a week. Even considering a number like 35 would work, particularly since most companies consider people who work more than 30 hours a week averaged over some time period, often over 3 months, to be full time.

Of course, one point of the legislation is to limit fines, and most of the large corporations are going to offer health insurance regardless, and a goodly chunk of those with 50-99 employees will, as well. The other point is to eliminate the incentive to limit worker hours to no more than 29 hours, created by Team Obama and Democrats.

The White House has threatened to veto the bill, which strikes at the healthcare law’s mandate that businesses provide insurance.

Except, the actual PPACA law makes no mention as to what the definition of full time for Ocare purposes is. This was a rule made up by Health and Human Services. Perhaps Mr. Obama could have picked up his so-called phone and tried to come to agreement. Heck, he could even offer a rational for why it should be 30 hours, which has never been done.

But Democrats argued that increasing the healthcare law’s definition of a full-time workweek would result in more employees being forced to work more hours and still not be eligible for insurance.

“This bill will allow you to work 10 more hours without health care. Isn’t that wonderful?” said House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.).

“I’m sure every American worker is saying, ‘Thank God the Republicans are going to have me work 10 more hours before I can get health insurance. Aren’t you generous,’” Hoyer added.

Yes, many of them will say “Thank God the Republicans want to make sure that people are going to be able to work full time hours and make a full time job wage, with all the other perks that come with being full time employees”. Leave it to Democrats for wanting to make sure that employees are restricted on their hours.

California Newspaper Vandalized Over Use Of “Illegal”

Who did it? That’s the question. Was it a typical intolerant Leftist? Or illegal aliens, who we’re told are good people and just want a better life?

(Fox News) A California newspaper will continue to use the term “illegals” to describe people who enter the U.S. without permission, despite an attack on its building by vandals believed to object to the term.

The Santa Barbara News-Press’s front entrance was sprayed with the message “The border is illegal, not the people who cross it” in red paint, sometime either Wednesday night or early Thursday, according to the newspaper’s director of operations, Donald Katich. The attack came amid wider objections to a News-Press headline that used the word “illegals” alongside a story on California granting driver’s licenses to people in the country illegally.

“The vandalism and the damage speak for itself, as well as the motivation behind it,” Santa Barbara Police Officer Mitch Jan said. “At this point in time, I don’t really have any suspect information. Without cameras or an eyewitness, we really don’t know who would be responsible.”

If we had to guess, that would take us down the road towards illegals being the perpetrators, since many of them espouse the same notion of the border being illegal. But, then, many hardcore liberals push the same notion.

“It has been the practice for nearly 10 years at the Santa Barbara News-Press to describe people living in this country illegally as “illegals” regardless of their country of origin,” the statement (from the paper) read. “This practice is under fire by some immigration groups who believe that this term is demeaning and does not accurately reflect the status of “undocumented immigrants,” one of several terms other media use to describe people in the Unites States illegally.

“It is an appropriate term in describing someone as “illegal” if they are in this country illegally,” the statement added.

Good for the paper, standing by their beliefs. For those who are subscribers, you can read their editorial on the practice. Too bad they didn’t make it available to everyone in this case. Anyhow, they’re much better than other papers, such as, say, The NY Times, which refused to publish any Charlie Hebdo cartoons.

Latest Warmist Push: Leave All Fossil Fuels In The Ground

And they mean it

(UK Guardian) Vast amounts of oil in the Middle East, coal in the US, Australia and China and many other fossil fuel reserves will have to be left in the ground to prevent dangerous climate change, according to the first analysis to identify which existing reserves cannot be burned.

The new work reveals the profound geopolitical and economic implications of tackling global warming for both countries and major companies that are reliant on fossil fuel wealth. It shows trillions of dollars of known and extractable coal, oil and gas, including most Canadian tar sands, all Arctic oil and gas and much potential shale gas, cannot be exploited if the global temperature rise is to be kept under the 2C safety limit agreed by the world’s nations. Currently, the world is heading for a catastrophic 5C of warming and the deadline to seal a global climate deal comes in December at a crunch UN summit in Paris.

“We’ve now got tangible figures of the quantities and locations of fossil fuels that should remain unused in trying to keep within the 2C temperature limit,” said Christophe McGlade, at University College London (UCL), and who led the new research published in the journal Nature. The work, using detailed data and well-established economic models, assumed cost effective climate policies would use the cheapest fossil fuels first, with more expensive fuels priced out of a world in which carbon emissions were strictly limited. For example, the model predicts that significant cheap-to-produce conventional oil would be burned but that the carbon limit would be reached before more expensive tar sands oil could be used.

How much is to be left in the ground?

  • 82% of coal
  • 49% gas (referring to natural gas, mostly)
  • 33% of oil

Otherwise, we are like totally doomed…wait, so we can use 67% of the oil reserves? And 51% of natural gas (notice that they are now having a big issue with natural gas). The study itself obviously has major issues with coal, as well as 1st World Nations, along with private and public investment in exploration and use of fossil fuels.

This is the Big Issue of the day for climate change, with lots and lots of articles being written on the subject, predicting dooooooooooooooooom if we don’t leave these fossil fuels reserves in the ground immediately. Yet, Warmists won’t give up their own use of fossil fuels. Weird, huh?

Dick Durbin: Now’s The Time To Raise The Gas Tax

Democrats controlled the Senate from the start of 2007 through just a few days ago. They could have passed legislation doing just that, particularly during the time period of 2009-2010, when they also controlled the House and the Presidency. Durbin could have submitted legislation at any time. It’s rather interesting that he is pushing this now that the GOP controls the Senate

(The Hill) Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) says he thinks “now is the time” to raise the gas tax, which hasn’t been touched by Congress in over 20 years.

“I think now is the time to do it, but we ought to do it in a thoughtful way,” Durbin said on Wednesday.

Huh. A “thoughtful way”.

Durbin said he wasn’t speaking for the entire Democratic caucus but noted two factors lawmakers should consider when opening up discussion on increasing the tax.

Perhaps not all, but surely 95%.

One, Durbin said, is “the most devastating impact is on lower and middle income families… so we have to find some tax relief for them if we increase that gas tax.”

“I think we can do it,” Durbin added, saying one way to shield lower income families could be through a refundable tax credit.

So, let’s raise the cost of living, then give some citizens a tax credit, which would only occur when they go through the laborious process of filing their tax returns? This is a shell game, with about as much chance of winning as when you give it a shot with a street hustler.

Second, Durbin said, new revenue generated should go to research in the Energy and Transportation Departments “so we can continue to build more fuel efficient vehicles.”

I wasn’t aware that the U.S. government actually built vehicles. My understanding is that private sector companies did this. What he is saying, though, is that lower and middle class citizens will only see a fraction back as tax credits, with most going to favored Democrat purposes.

This is typical Democrat: any excuse to raise taxes.

Muslim Cleric Explains What Islam Means In Light Of Paris Terror Attack

Perhaps some of the Islamic extremist apologists should take note of what Anjem Choudary writes in the USA Today

People know the consequences: Opposing view
Why did France allow the tabloid to provoke Muslims?

Contrary to popular misconception, Islam does not mean peace but rather means submission to the commands of Allah alone. Therefore, Muslims do not believe in the concept of freedom of expression, as their speech and actions are determined by divine revelation and not based on people’s desires.

Although Muslims may not agree about the idea of freedom of expression, even non-Muslims who espouse it say it comes with responsibilities. In an increasingly unstable and insecure world, the potential consequences of insulting the Messenger Muhammad are known to Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

Muslims consider the honor of the Prophet Muhammad to be dearer to them than that of their parents or even themselves. To defend it is considered to be an obligation upon them. The strict punishment if found guilty of this crime under sharia (Islamic law) is capital punishment implementable by an Islamic State. This is because the Messenger Muhammad said, “Whoever insults a Prophet kill him.”

Yes, most Muslims do not go on rampages when insulted. Most never get involved in terrorism, honor killings, suicide bombings, and similar actions. I’d say most just want to be left alone. That said, what Choudary writes is what is being taught in so many mosques, madrasas (Islamic schools), on-line, and, it appears in the Koran! Most of the issues in the past with Christianity are in the past, like centuries and millennium in the past, and were often done in contradiction to the words of the Bible. The Koran, as Choudary points out, specifically tells Muslims to kill whoever insults Mohammed.

Remember, these are not my words, these are the words of Islamist clerics, just like Choudary.

Perhaps it is high time that Liberals, and especially those in the Western media, understand just what it is that the Islamist view of Islam means. Instead of running toothless editorials about Charlie Hebdo standing solidly for free expression, and that western media should all do the same, Western media should actually do this. They should expose what the so-called extremist viewpoint means, rather than dancing around the issues and offering apologies. Enough with the “hey, it’s just a small minority of the 1.6 billion Muslims”. They should not, though, ask Muslims to apologize for what the extremists are doing in the name of Allah and Mohammed (though the media should acknowledge that they are, in fact, doing it in the name of Allah and Mohammed – I’m looking at you today, Ezra Klein). Even though leftist media outlets do ask Conservatives, Republicans, Christians, Tea Party members, etc, to apologize when one incident happens. What the media should do is ask Muslims to stand up against the extremists, much like during the Civil Rights era, when white people were told to step up against the entrenched racism, Jim Crow, and segregation against Blacks.

This all starts with understanding what, exactly, the Islamists stand for, what they mean, that they mean what they say, and what they want to do. Liberals need to acknowledge the reality, rather than their own kneejerk reactions, their yammerings about tolerance and multiculturalism.
