Weepy College Violets Hiding From Scary Ideas

Over at the NY Times, Judith Shulevitz runs an op-ed entitled In College and Hiding From Scary Ideas, which is about how colleges and college kids do all they can to, well, hide from scary ideas. The op-ed is written “softly”, since it goes against the grain of the hardcore Liberalism typically on display at the NY Times. It starts off with a discussion on an incident at Brown University, where many students and administrators were Very Concerned over a debate

So when she heard last fall that a student group had organized a debate about campus sexual assault between Jessica Valenti, the founder of feministing.com, and Wendy McElroy, a libertarian, and that Ms. McElroy was likely to criticize the term “rape culture,” Ms. Byron was alarmed. “Bringing in a speaker like that could serve to invalidate people’s experiences,” she told me. It could be “damaging.”

Ms. Byron and some fellow task force members secured a meeting with administrators. Not long after, Brown’s president, Christina H. Paxson, announced that the university would hold a simultaneous, competing talk to provide “research and facts” about “the role of culture in sexual assault.” Meanwhile, student volunteers put up posters advertising that a “safe space” would be available for anyone who found the debate too upsetting.

The safe space, Ms. Byron explained, was intended to give people who might find comments “troubling” or “triggering,” a place to recuperate. The room was equipped with cookies, coloring books, bubbles, Play-Doh, calming music, pillows, blankets and a video of frolicking puppies, as well as students and staff members trained to deal with trauma. Emma Hall, a junior, rape survivor and “sexual assault peer educator” who helped set up the room and worked in it during the debate, estimates that a couple of dozen people used it. At one point she went to the lecture hall — it was packed — but after a while, she had to return to the safe space. “I was feeling bombarded by a lot of viewpoints that really go against my dearly and closely held beliefs,” Ms. Hall said.

Rape and sexual assault are certainly not anything to joke about (and I’ll avoid mentioning that college campuses are hotbeds of liberalism, which seem to have lots of problems with rape and sexual assault). Yet, this is just one example of Leftists going into Weepy Mode, acting like hothouse flowers at the mere drop of a divergent opinion, or even the possibility of a different opinion. Most will refuse to even listen to the opinion before going into weepiness and outrage.

Safe spaces are an expression of the conviction, increasingly prevalent among college students, that their schools should keep them from being “bombarded” by discomfiting or distressing viewpoints. Think of the safe space as the live-action version of the better-known trigger warning, a notice put on top of a syllabus or an assigned reading to alert students to the presence of potentially disturbing material.

Here’s the part that truly peeked my interest in the opinion piece

I’m old enough to remember a time when college students objected to providing a platform to certain speakers because they were deemed politically unacceptable. Now students worry whether acts of speech or pieces of writing may put them in emotional peril. Two weeks ago, students at Northwestern University marched to protest an article by Laura Kipnis, a professor in the university’s School of Communication. Professor Kipnis had criticized — O.K., ridiculed — what she called the sexual paranoia pervading campus life.

I’m old enough to remember a time when college students would either argue back with those who are “politically unacceptable”, or simply refuse to attend, rather than shutting down debate. When ideas and thought weren’t cause for breaking down into “emotional peril”, sending supposed adults into rooms more akin to pre-school.

Nowadays, these same college students, who will brutally attack anyone on social media in a fanatical, brutal, and often disgusting manner, cannot face the real world, and need their “safe spaces” to avoid emotional distress. Wait till they get into the real Real World, and learn that no one cares about their weepiness, and to just do their job or resign. Welcome to the adulthood.

Ted Cruz Announces His Intention To Run For President

This will make the Establishment GOP very upset. After several days of hearing that Cruz was planning on making a big announcement Monday, he made that announcement

(Politico) The 2016 election officially began with a tweet.

Shortly after midnight on Monday morning, Ted Cruz confirmed on Twitter that he will run for president, making him the first official candidate of the 2016 race and kicking off a season of campaign launches, with several other candidates expected to jump in in coming weeks.

“I’m running for President and I hope to earn your support!” the tweet read, with a link to a slickly-produced 30-second campaign video.

“It’s a time for truth,” Cruz says in the clip, which is paid for by “Cruz for President.” “A time to rise to the challenge, just as Americans have always done. I believe in America and her people, and I believe we can stand up and restore our promise. It’s going to take a new generation of courageous conservatives to help make America great again. And I’m ready to stand with you to lead the fight.”

The full announcement is scheduled for 10am at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. His campaign website, TedCruz.org, is already live, and includes the tag line “reigniting the promise of America.”

Cruz also relishes his reputation as an uncompromising conservative — in his campaign launch video, he refers to himself as a “courageous conservative.” In his view, the GOP has lost the last two presidential elections because the party has nominated candidates who are too moderate.

“If we nominate another candidate in that same mold, the same voters who stayed home in 2008 and 2012 will stay home in 2016, and Hillary Clinton is the next president,” he told POLITICO in December, after Jeb Bush announced he was considering a presidential bid.

Mitt Romney was a great choice, IMO, in 2012 to deal with the economy. Unfortunately, his was entirely too squishy for many Conservatives, especially social Conservatives. Expect big opposition from Establishment Republicans. I already see a few, who shall remain unnamed, trashing Cruz, and, in essence, Conservatism. They apparently want another squish, someone who is pretty much Democrat Lite, like Jeb Bush.

While being more of a fiscal conservative than a social conservative, he will appeal to those same socials, and one needs to appeal to the Conservative base during the primaries, especially early on. One also needs to be a great speaker with great ideas, both of which are Cruz allies.

Things Go Dark For Earth Hour

This is one of the most perfect, and ironic, headlines when it comes to Cult Of Climastrology

Philippines to go dark on March 28 for Earth Hour

Homes and establishments across the country will go dark on Saturday evening, March 28 and it’s not because of any power outage. The lights-out event is called Earth Hour and it will happen from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm on March 28.

The entire movement is ostensibly pushing for people to return to the time when people spent their nights huddled at home at night, using fireplaces (which will also be banished under the auspices of “climate change”) to keep the dark at bay, a time of superstition about vampires and werewolves, of malevolent spirits roaming the countryside.

Easier than rewriting all the time. Also, the listing order has to do with how they are added over time, not how good a post is. I just copy and paste from the previous week, then edit. If you see one of the *’s, go ahead and check out the blog anyhow, see if there is an update. I cannot update with my Android during the day.

ISIS Publishes Kill List Of 100 U.S. Military Members

When it comes to ISIS, this should very much be taken as a clear and present threat

(UK Daily Mail) A division of ISIS published a ‘kill list’ containing the names, photos and addresses of 100 US military members online and called upon its ‘brothers residing in America’ to kill them.

The list was posted online by the ‘Islamic State Hacking Division’.

The group claimed it hacked several military servers, databases and emails to obtain the information.

The ISHD said it wants ‘lone wolf’ attackers to go after the military members and ‘kill them wherever you find them’.

The list did appear to match up with information which was available online, TheBlaze reported.

The posting read: ‘With the huge amount of data we have from various different servers and databases, we have decided to leak 100 addresses so that our brothers in America can deal with you.

‘And now we have made it easy for you by giving you addresses, all you need to do is take the final step, so what are you waiting for?

‘Kill them in their own lands, behead them in their own homes, stab them to death as they walk their streets thinking that they are safe.’

Interestingly, very few US national media outlets are featuring this story. The NY Times buried it on page A14 of today’s (Sunday) edition. There seems to be no article at the Washington Post. CBS News? Nope. ABC News has a small blurb. NBC News? Negative. CNN? Uh uh. One would think that when it comes to ISIS directly threatening American citizens, much less military members, this would be taken seriously. But, I guess, when it comes to ISIS and the spread of radical Islam, this might show the failure of President Selfie

That is referring to Obama sitting around watching basketball while U.S. forces evacuated from Yemen after al Qaeda seized another town.

That’s right, folks, yet another leisurely round of golf. And it’s surely a given that no bothers will be give with more March Madness today.

Guardian climate change petition reaches 100k signatures

They’re like totally enthused to tell Other People how to run their business

(UK Guardian) A Guardian petition which calls for the Wellcome Trust and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to ditch their fossil fuel investments has gathered more than 100,000 signatures since it launched on Monday.

The campaign asks the world’s two largest charitable foundations to divest from the top 200 oil, gas and coal companies within five years and to immediately freeze any new investments. It was launched by Guardian editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger in partnership with the global climate movement 350.org.

High profile signatories include Scottish actor Tilda Swinton and Professor Anne Glover, the former chief scientific adviser to the president of the European commission.

The campaign has also attracted the support of activist Bianca Jagger, Costa award-winning author Helen Macdonald and Rou Reynolds from the band Enter Shikari, while chef Yotam Ottolenghi said he backed it “because we’re running out of time and it’s pretty terrifying”.

A couple points here. First, you know what is coming: have all those who signed the petition given up their own use of fossil fuels? Pretty much a rhetorical question, as we know the answer is a resounding “no”, followed by typical Cult of Climastrology deflections.

Second, as mentioned previously, the Guardian has gone full bore CoC, and has apparently decided to give up on their core mission of journalism and move strictly into advocacy. Is it any wonder the media is losing more and more trust?

Schoolkids Trudge Through Snow To Hear Pharrell Yammer About “Climate Change”

How perfect. Of course, CBS News failed to see the irony, because, of course, snow, especially snow on the first day of spring, is now being blamed on too much heat

About 1,200 middle school children trudged through the latest snow storm to the United Nations General Assembly on Friday evening to hear hip hop singer and producer Pharrell Williams talk about climate change.

Sadly, CBS refused to provide a picture of the kids trudging through the snow to hear about Hotcoldwetdry. But, they have Pharrell

I love the Marxist revolutionary hat.

The U.N. sponsored the event, along the U.N. Foundation and MixRadio, to celebrate International Day of Happiness, established by the world organization in 2012. It transformed a normally conflict-focused, staid venue into a dramatically “happy” environment with a clear message: The next generation needs to pay attention to climate change.

Wonderful: they’re using the International Day Of Happiness to stoke the flames of fearmongering regarding “climate change”, which makes kids into neurotic wrecks.

BTW, how much electricity does the UN building use? Electricity is Bad for “climate change”, you know.

Liberal Gun Hating Group Everytown Prefers Young College Girls Drunk

Liberals have been on a tear over the past couple of years regarding sexual assault on campus, which is interesting in that college campuses tend to be very Left leaning. They are very concerned about rape on campus. One would think that Liberals would be concerned with making sure young women are able to defend themselves. Nope. Only with whistles and/or peeing or vomiting on themselves

(Breitbart) On March 19, Everytown for Gun Safety tweeted to proponents of campus carry, asking if giving guns to their “drunk, college-age daughters” is really a great idea.

This question follows campus carry bills making it out of committee in Florida and Nevada, and it also follows Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s reaffirmation that he will sign campus carry legislation once it reaches his desk.

https://twitter.com/Everytown/status/578668529123241984

Ironically, in late February, Everytown criticized Nevada GOP Leader Michele Fiore (R-Las Vegas) for describing college-age females as “young, hot little girls on campus.” Fiore said men bent on sexual assault would think twice if “young, hot little girls on campus have a firearm.”

But now, with Everytown’s drunk daughters tweet, we finally understand—it’s okay to paint with a broad brush and describe college females as irresponsible humans, but it’s not okay to mention how unarmed, attractive women are targeted for sexual assault and worse.

So, Everytown is an enabler for young college women to get themselves vastly liquored up, a situation which lowers inhibitions and can easily lead to these young women being taken advantage of in a sexual manner. Of course, they would not be eligible to actually carry a firearm while drinking. But, open and concealed carry would be a great way to protect women when they aren’t drinking. Liberals apparently hate guns more than they want women to protect themselves.

The link leads to hyper-feminist Jezebel, which essentially exposes that feminists are more against guns than for women defending themselves.

Anyone notice anything interesting in that photo?
