The More We Find Out About #IranDeal, The Worse It Gets

(Breitbart) Indeed, the deal is weaker than the provisional arrangement the White House announcedthis past April.

Under the agreement, which is 159 pages long, the Iranian regime agrees to limit its nuclear enrichment activities for eight years (instead of ten years, as agreed in Lausanne). It will limit its stockpile of enriched uranium to 300 kg, and will limit its research and development, and will be assisted by the international community in some nuclear research, including at the underground facility at Fordow, which it had operated illegally.

In return, the international community will drop major financial and economic sanctions against the Iranian regime. The agreement indicates that new sanctions cannot be applied by the EU or the U.S. before a special dispute resolution process is conducted.

Iran will only grant very limited access to international inspectors to visit nuclear sites. They will be allowed one visit to the military site at Parchin, and visits to other sites will be tightly controlled, with a 24-day advance warning, according to reports. If Iran refuses access, the issue will be arbitrated by a Joint Commission, on which Iran will also be represented. Sanctions can only be re-imposed for “significant non-performance.”

As many, including myself, are asking on Twitter, exactly what does the United States get out of this deal, other than Obama and Kerry being praised by the Left Wing Media? A bad deal is worse than no deal.

“While I will thoroughly review all of the details of this agreement, all signs point to this being a bad deal. The most concerning concessions – on sanctions, sunset, inspections and verification, research and development, and Iran’s enrichment capability, among others – were made long ago. To those concessions, it now appears that the Administration has made still more, especially the repeal of the international arms embargo on Iran. The result, I fear, is that this agreement will strengthen Iran’s ability to acquire conventional weapons and ballistic missiles, while retaining an industrial scale nuclear program, without any basic change to its malign activities in the Middle East.

“Ultimately, the problem with this agreement is that it is built far too much on hope – on the belief that somehow the Iranian government will fundamentally change in the next several years, such that it can be trusted with a growing arsenal, a huge influx of cash, and the infrastructure of a nuclear program. This is delusional and dangerous, especially as we see Iran on the offensive in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, and elsewhere in the region. Instead, I fear this agreement could undermine the very goals we have maintained for 35 years – weakening the Islamic Republic, constraining its threatening influence, strengthening Israel and our Arab partners, lessening regional tensions, and preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability.”

This was a deal made on U.S. weakness, thanks to Obama and Hillary Clinton, with some help from John Kerry. This gives Iran most of everything they want, kicks the can down the road on a nuclear armed Iran, and will ultimately make the Middle East less stable. Good job, O!

And, let’s face it, as more details come out, it will get worse. There is literally nothing of benefit to the United States.

Warmist: No New Carbon Infrastructure Can Be Built After 2018

This is about as nutty nuts as the Cult of Climastrology can get. Level 10 moonbattery (not Shub, he just highlighted it). And by “carbon infrastructure”, there is way, way more involved.

In only three years there will be enough fossil fuel-burning stuff—cars, homes, factories, power plants, etc.—built to blow through our carbon budget for a 2 degrees Celsius temperature rise. Never mind staying below a safer, saner 1.5°C of global warming. The relentless laws of physics have given us a hard, non-negotiable deadline, making G7 statements about a fossil fuel-phase out by 2100 or a weak deal at the UN climate talks in Paris irrelevant.

“By 2018, no new cars, homes, schools, factories, or electrical power plants should be built anywhere in the world, ever again unless they’re either replacements for old ones or are carbon neutral? Are you sure I worked that out right?” I asked Steve Davis of the University of California, co-author of a new climate study.

“We didn’t go that far in our study. But yes, your numbers are broadly correct. That’s what this study means,” Davis told me over the phone last fall.

I couldn’t accept that we need to immediately slow production of new things like factories, hospitals, homes, and ten thousand other things that use fossil fuels. I couldn’t accept that everything had to change…right away. I sent out emails to leading scientists in different countries practically begging them to tell me I screwed up the math or something. “It’s a different way of looking at where we are but you’ve got it right,” they said.

The CoC really wants the world to look like Ethiopia than Portland.

Deal Reached With Iran, Which Gets Almost Everything It Wants

Leftist media outlet after leftist media outlet are trotting out the word “historic”. Chamberlain’s deal with Nazi Germany was historic, too. Is this deal as bad? Once the full details are exposed, we’ll know

(NY Times) Iran and a group of six nations led by the United States have agreed to a historic accord to significantly limit Tehran’s nuclear ability for more than a decade in return for lifting international oil and financial sanctions against Iran, a senior Western diplomat involved in the negotiations said on Tuesday.

The agreement and its annexes run more than 80 pages, Iranian officials said, outlining in painstaking detail how much nuclear fuel Iran can keep in the country for the next 15 years; what kind of research and development it can perform on centrifuges and other nuclear equipment; and the redesign of both a nuclear reactor and a deep-underground enrichment site that Israeli and American officials feared could be invulnerable to bombing.

But to strike the deal, Mr. Kerry and the other negotiators had to accept an understanding that essentially left in place most of Iran’s infrastructure at the country’s main nuclear sites, though much of it would be disassembled and put in storage. Iran is likely to cite that fact as evidence that it never gave in to the West’s demands that it dismantle its critical facilities.

They are being allowed to keep over 6000 centrifuges in operation, meaning their nuclear weapon aspirations are just delayed. Provided they don’t cheat. And Iran would never cheat, right? The restrictions phase out after 10 years, and after 15 they are free to produce as much weapons grade material as the want! So, the deal has just kicked the can down the road.

(Politico) Obama main goal was to impose limits on Iran’s fast-advancing nuclear program to ensure that Tehran can’t acquire a nuclear bomb faster than the U.S. and its allies can act to stop it. The deal seeks to do that by reducing Iran’s capacity to produce highly enriched uranium and plutonium, slowing its research and development into nuclear technology, and imposing inspections and monitoring of Iran’s nuclear activities to prevent cheating.

No, the idea was to stop Iran’s nuclear weapons program, not slow it. So, in that regard, complete fail.

Inspections of the nuclear sites, especially the military ones, is obviously a big deal. What I’m seeing in the various articles is unclear, so, there’s little point in discussion till the details are released. One point most are reporting is that Iran will be given a heads up prior to any inspections.

As Iran takes steps to scale back its nuclear program, the U.S., U.N. and EU will gradually begin to lift sanctions on Iran’s economy. That reportedly includes the phase-out of a U.N. arms embargo that held up the talks in the final hours.

Some are reporting that Iran will be allowed to begin exporting massive amounts of oil. Again, details are slim. What we do know is that Iran will be flush with cash, which concerns many nations, since Iran is the world’s number one state sponsor of terrorism. Removing the arms embargo? Iran has already broken it multiple times. Giving them the ability to export weapons to the terrorist organizations it supports is a really bad idea.

Anyhow, Obama is supposed to give a speech about this sometime this morning. Supposedly in a few minutes. Once the full deal is released, we’ll have a better idea as how bad this deal is. Unless you’re Iran. Then it’s really good, at least for the hard-liners.

Bummer: Volcanoes Only Slow Down Climate Change From Your FF Vehicle Temporarily

Goalpost shifting and Excuse Making. Or just a really, really misleading headline? (BTW, misspellings and formatting errors are in the news release, not mine. Mine are usually in the headline)

Volcanic aerosols have acted during the last 10 years as a natural umbrella to slow down global temperature increase from greenhouse gases

Although global concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has continuously increased over the past decade, the mean global surface temperature has not followed the same path. A team of international reseachers, KIT scientists among them, have now found an explanation for this slowing down in global warming: the incoming solar radiation in the years 2008-2011 was twice as much reflected by volcanic aerosol particles in the lowest part of the stratosphere than previously thought. The team presents their study in Nature Communications (DOI: 10.1038/ncomms8692).

Whether a volcanic eruption has a global climate impact or not depends on several factors. There is the amount of volcanic sulfur dioxide as well as the injection height. But also the latitude of the eruption is important: As the air flow in northern hemispheric stratosphere is largely disconnected from the southern hemisphere, only volcanic eruptions near the equator can effectively distribute the emitted material over both hemispheres. As in the Tambora eruption on the Indonesian Island Sumbawa 200 years ago. This eruption led to such a strong global cooling that the year 1816 was called „year without summer”, including worldwide crop failures and famines. Also the Krakatau eruption 1883 on Indonesia or the Pinatubo 1991 on the Philippines led to noticeable cooling. The present study now indicates that „the cooling effect of volcanic eruptions was underestimated in the past, because the lowest part of the stratosphere was mostly not considered. Interestingly our results show that the effect also depends on the season. The eruptions investigated by us had their strongest impact in late summer when the incoming solar radiation is still strong”, explains Dr. Sandra M. Andersson.

The news release itself never really makes the case that volcano eruptions are just temporary, it just discusses the effects, which, as the last paragraph shows, have been underestimated.

The big question is, if volcanoes, and the solar radiation, can have a cooling effect, why can they not have a warming effect? Why do Cult of Climastrology members only believe that Mankind is mostly/solely responsible for the warming?

Is Earth Heading For A Mini-Ice Age?

OK, so a bunch of people have asked, in both email and on Twitter, why I haven’t commented on this yet

Earth heading for ‘mini ice age’ within 15 years

The earth is 15 years from a “mini ice-age” that will cause bitterly cold winters during which rivers such as the Thames freeze over, scientists have predicted.

Solar researchers at the University of Northumbria have created a new model of the sun’s activity which they claim produces “unprecedentedly accurate predictions”.

They said fluid movements within the sun, which are thought to create 11-year cycles in the weather, will converge in such a way that temperatures will fall dramatically in the 2030s.

Solar activity will fall by 60 per cent as two waves of fluid “effectively cancel each other out”, according to Prof Valentina Zharkova.

This is not the first article I’ve read on this prediction, and I’m sure it won’t be the last that is trotted out.

That said, this is still a prediction. Yes, it is based more on science, rather than “computer models”, hysteria, and politics, but, it is still a prediction. Will it happen? Maybe. Maybe not. Time will tell. But, I’m not into predictions, at least not that far out. I blast Warmists for making them, and I won’t believe this type of prediction till it is closer to happening, which I have stated multiple times. I’m comfortable predicting that the Giants will win a Super Bowl in the next 15 years. Not something like this. I take all predictions with a tub of salt.

NASA: Pause Is Real, And It’s Totally Due To The Heat Hiding In The Oceans

NASA Study Finds Indian, Pacific Oceans Temporarily Hide Global Warming

A new NASA study of ocean temperature measurements shows in recent years extra heat from greenhouse gases has been trapped in the waters of the Pacific and Indian oceans. Researchers say this shifting pattern of ocean heat accounts for the slowdown in the global surface temperature trend observed during the past decade.

Researchers Veronica Nieves, Josh Willis and Bill Patzert of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, California, found a specific layer of the Indian and Pacific oceans between 300 and 1,000 feet (100 and 300 meters) below the surface has been accumulating more heat than previously recognized. They also found the movement of warm water has affected surface temperatures. The result was published Thursday in the journal Science.

During the 20th century, as greenhouse gas concentrations increased and trapped more heat energy on Earth, global surface temperatures also increased. However, in the 21st century, this pattern seemed to change temporarily.

“Greenhouse gases continued to trap extra heat, but for about 10 years starting in the early 2000s, global average surface temperature stopped climbing, and even cooled a bit,” said Willis.

So, nature can magically hide the heat, making it responsible for the Pause. But, according to NASA and the rest of the Cult of Climastrology, nature can’t be responsible at all for the warming.

“Given the fact the Pacific Decadal Oscillation seems to be shifting to a warm phase, ocean heating in the Pacific will definitely drive a major surge in global surface warming,” Nieves said.

Wait, I thought it was Mankind’s fault from GHGs? It really does sound like they pull this all out of their butts.

(reporting climate science) “Natural, decadal variability has been with us for centuries, and it continues to have big regional impacts on society,” said Nieves, a JPL scientist with a joint appointment at the University of California, Los Angeles. “We can expect to have more hiatuses in the future, but unless future hiatuses are stronger than usual, they will be less visible due to fast rising greenhouse gases. Right now, the combined effect of the human-caused warming and the Pacific changing to a warm phase can play together and produce warming acceleration.”

This is actually part of the new Warmists talking points, which attempt to incorporate natural variability, then say that GHGs from Mankind make things worse. They’ve been trotting this out as of late in instances where their typical Blame Mankind talking points do not work so well.

NY Times Editorial Board Spins A Fantasy To Protect Illegal Alien Killers

If you want to read what the Liberal intelligentsia believe, you head to the NY Times. And, right now, they want to protect sanctuary cities, which protect those who have entered out country illegally or overstayed their visas, even if they are bad people who have committed serious crimes.

The editorial from the mostly white and male Editorial Board starts off with a discussion of the murder of Kathryn Steinle by 5 time deported illegal Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, who also has a long rap sheet. Of course it devolves into whines about him being a “dark-skinned face of the Mexican killers that Donald Trump — in a racist speech announcing his presidential campaign, and numerous interviews thereafter — has been warning the nation about.” And whines about people taking advantage of the murder to complain about illegals and sanctuary cities. Because liberals never take advantage. How many op-eds and editorials emanated from the NY Times about gun violence? Then we move to

Lost in the screaming were the sound reasons that cities and localities shun the role of immigration enforcers. They are balancing public safety with a respect for civil rights and the Constitution. San Francisco had received an ICE request, called a detainer, to hold Mr. Lopez-Sanchez, but detainers are unconstitutional; a person can’t be held without charge just for ICE’s convenience. Turning the local police and sheriff’s deputies into de facto ICE agents heightens fear and distrust in immigrant communities, which makes fighting crime harder.

Well, when a city is inviting illegal aliens, including those with criminal records, to their cities, telling them they will be protected from Los Federales, public safety has been thrown out the window. Civil rights? What civil rights? The illegals have broken federal law by entering illegally/overstaying visas.

Unconstitutional? He would be held with charge. Being in the country illegally. It is criminal to re-enter country after being deported. Who cares if this causes fear and distrust in the illegal alien communities? They’re here illegally. Funny how Liberals pick and choose which federal law they want to enforce. When Arizona passed its SB1070 law, cracking down on illegals, they pitched a fit that Arizona wouldn’t be following federal law. Yet, they support Sanctuary cities.

The Homeland Security secretary, Jeh Johnson, last fall announced his plan to replace Secure Communities with a new Priority Enforcement Program, which would only seek custody of immigrants convicted of certain serious crimes, and only by asking the local authorities to notify ICE about their imminent release. If the program had been in place in San Francisco earlier in the year, a phone call might have kept Mr. Lopez-Sanchez off the streets.

No, it wouldn’t, because Sanctuary cities refuse to let ICE know anything. They could have picked up the phone and called ICE about Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez when they had him in custody. They chose not to.

People like the NY Times Editorial Board and San Francisco government have the blood of Kathryn Steinle on their hands. They refuse to get serious on these illegals. OK, fine, most are probably nice people, looking for a better life. They’re still here illegally. Mexican law wouldn’t put up with this same conduct. Nor would most other countries. And they sure wouldn’t coddle illegals who also break serious property and violent crime laws.

Scott Walker Joins The GOP Race

Talk about a crowded field

(The Hill) “America needs new, fresh leadership with big, bold ideas from outside of Washington to actually get things done,” Walker said in a video.

“In Wisconsin, we didn’t nibble around the edges. We enacted big, bold reforms that took power out of the hands of the big government special interests and gave it to the hard-working taxpayers, and people’s lives are better because of it,” Walker said.

“We fought and won. In the Republican field, there are some who are good fighters, but they haven’t won those battles,” he added.

Pros – The Wisconsin Governor is about as Reaganesque as one could want. He has one two elections in “progressive” Wisconsin, including a union-driven recall election. He’s pressed and succeeded in pushing a conservative agenda in an unlikely state.

Cons – Could be viewed as too “vanilla” on the campaign trail. Today, politics is more about personality and emotions than how good at a particular job any candidate would be. More people thought Mitt Romney would be a better President than Obama had been, but they voted for him based on empathy.

A second The Hill article notes the same

He faces a charisma question, and is seen by some critics as a vanilla candidate from the Midwest who lacks the “wow” factor — the same liability that capsized the candidacy of former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty in 2012.

While competing with more exuberant rivals such as Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Donald Trump, Walker must show he can appeal to wide swathes of voters.

Pawlenty was an excellent candidate, one of the best for 2012 IMO, except that he seemed boring, and flamed out early. Walker will need to kick up the excitement factor.

For me:

  • Walker: Yes
  • Rubio: could hold my nose over his amnesty push
  • Bush: he’d have to seriously convince me, after his big support for Common Core, illegal immigration, and “climate change” legislation
  • Carly Fiorina: Yes!
  • Trump: oh, hell no. Zero trust of this guy. He’s saying the right things on immigration, and attacking Hillary and Dems, but, do we really know who this guy is politically?
  • Cruz: Yes!
  • Christy: I do not trust him. He seems more than willing to attack Conservatives, but not Democrats.
  • Rand Paul: I like the guy, he has good ideas, but, I don’t think he would play well during a general election.
  • Perry: meh.
  • Ben Carson: good guy, I don’t think he has what it takes to win a general election.

Now it’s time to see how this all shakes out.

In Democrat Run Baltimore, Apparently Guns Just Go Off By Themselves

It couldn’t have anything to do with the people/voters who live in Baltimore, and the policies they enact, could it?

In the middle of a rousing sermon at his Southern Baptist Church on Sunday, the Rev. Donte Hickman asked congregants to raise a hand if they had personally been affected by gun violence.

Hands immediately shot up, one after another, in nearly every pew in the East Baltimore house of worship — a testament to a problem Hickman said disproportionately impacts black communities in the city.

“People are not our problem,” Hickman said. “It’s the pistols that they’re packing that are our problem.”

Right. Because before those guns, most of which are illegally owned, found their way in the hands of those people, they were perfect little angels.

Anyhow, the good Reverend was part of yet another push to take back the streets. Funny how we constantly need these in these heavily Democratic urban areas. And, of course, they want more gun laws. Because the hardcore criminals shooting each other in the streets of Baltimore will finally pay attention to the law. It’s not like 155 people have been murdered in 65% Black Democrat run Baltimore this year.

Actually, there haven’t been 155

(Baltimore Sun) Violence continued in Baltimore as three people were killed late Saturday and early Sunday.

In all, more than 15 people have been shot since Friday, including six who died. Among them is a man shot in the head in the Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park area early Friday morning who died over the weekend.

The actual number is now 158. Good job, Democrats! Hey, let’s disarm all the non-criminals.
