Judge Shoots Down Deerfield’s Gun Banning Law

Somebody actually read Illinois law and their Constitution

(Townhall) Zero hour was approaching for the law-abiding gun owners of Deerfield, Illinois. The village had banned the ownership of so-called assault weapons, which in reality meant AR-15 rifles and any other firearm that carried a detachable magazine capable of holding ten or more rounds. That’s how Deerfield defined a so-called assault weapon.

On June 13, the anti-gun ordinance passed by the Chicago suburb would have gone into effect. It was essentially a gun ban, and there were no exceptions. It’s either you turn them over, move, or risk facing a $250-$1,000/ day noncompliance fee. Yeah, the AR-15 and other rifles the anti-gun Left finds scary were banned, but it also included scores of handguns. Magazines holding 15 rounds are not uncommon. Luckily, a circuit court judge blocked this law 24 hours from going into effect. And yes, legal challenges were filed against this grossly unconstitutional law (via Vice News):

A judge blocked a ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines in the small town of Deerfield, Illinois, less than 24 hours before it was meant to go into effect.

The decision, handed down Tuesday evening in the 19th Judicial Circuit Court in Lake County, Illinois, is a small victory for gun rights groups, who sued the Chicago suburb in April after it became the first municipality to ban assault weapons following the Parkland high school shooting. The Deerfield ordinance was passed unanimously by all six board members on April 2.

Gun groups, including the National Rifle Association of Illinois, requested a temporary restraining order against the ban while the lawsuit proceeded.

Now, this is, obviously, only in effect to the end of the litigation, but it’s a big step forward to make sure that the town is not banning/confiscating/fining law abiding citizens for possession of legally purchased property.

One of the main reasons that the judge implemented the block on the law was because Illinois law states that “the regulation of the possession or ownership of assault weapons are exclusive powers and functions of this state.” So, once the lawsuit is actually litigated, Deerfield will lose.

But, the gun grabbers, who say they aren’t trying to take away your guns, will continue attempting to take away your guns.

Washington Post: ZOMG, Trump Didn’t Come Home With A Deal!

OK, OK, it’s actually not that bad, but, you just knew that the Credentialed Leftist media (and some #NeverTrumpers) would be losing their minds and attempting to put what was essentially a meet and greet in the worst possible light. Some are just bat guano insane, such as Excitable Kathleen Parker’s (since I’m at the WP), others attempt to put their Trump Derangement Syndrome in reasonable terms

No more concessions
America needs tangible commitments from North Korea. So far, Trump hasn’t gotten them.

THE SINGAPORE SUMMIT was, without question, a triumph for Kim Jong Un and his North Korean regime. A dictator who has ordered the murder of his own family members, and who oversees a gulag comparable to those of Hitler and Stalin, was able to parade on the global stage as a legitimate statesman, praised by the president of the United States as “very talented” and worthy of trust. President Trump offered Mr. Kim a major concession, the suspension of U.S. military exercises with South Korea, and spoke of his wish to withdraw U.S. troops from the country. Mr. Kim, meanwhile, did not commit to the “complete, verifiable and irreversible” denuclearization the United States has demanded — nor to any other change in his regime’s criminal behavior.

The two leaders agreed to begin a diplomatic process to “work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.” That is certainly preferable to the slide toward war that appeared to be underway last year, and it can be hoped that it will eventually lead to steps by North Korea to dismantle its arsenal. But Mr. Trump has placed a large bet on a cruel and unpredictable ruler whose motives and aims are far from clear — and who has shown no sign of altering North Korea’s commitment to nuclear weapons or its deceptive negotiating tactics.

Funny how we didn’t hear the same things regarding Obama attempting to, well, give the farm away to the Islamic extremists who run the Islamic Republic of Iran. But, such is the talking point of the Trump haters, who apparently would rather see the negatives in everything Trump.

But, this is the age of Trump. Things are done different. When Trump was saying that he could take the measure of Kim in a minute, that’s what he meant. To put it in terms of the business world, something which the politicians and those who follow them, like the WP Editorial Board, do not understand, you have two CEO’s of giant companies doing a meet and greet to see if they can do business. Looking each other in the eye. Having a frank conversation between personal stories and polite conversation. Then they go their separate ways and let their underlings handle the details.

The diplomatic process that will now begin ought to be aimed at delivering tangible North Korean commitments and meaningful actions. The United States should be seeking a full declaration of the regime’s arsenal and nuclear facilities, as a start; without it, showy demolitions of test sites are meaningless. And Mr. Trump should refrain from offering Mr. Kim any further unilateral concessions.

Trump gave NK a few concessions, all of which can be cancelled in a heartbeat. Trump is thinking about the bigger picture: making North Korea much less of a threat to the world, much less South Korea. Could NK be playing games? Of course. But, you have to determine whether to play that game. I’ll give Obama credit for refusing to play the normal game that previous presidents had engaged in, in which they gave NK stuff when NK became aggressive and verbose. Unfortunately, that led to the missile launches and nuclear weapons. But, that would have happened anyhow.

Now, we have Trump playing the game in his own way. People should be hoping it succeeds. What if NK can have their nuclear weapons capabilities removed, which leads to further weapons removals? What if the country can be made more open? What if it comes that South Korea and Japan no longer have to worry about attacks from NK? It has to start somewhere, just like with Nixon going to China. But, it sure appears that the Democrats, the Credentialed Media, and NeverTrumpers want this all to fail.

Hawaii Enacts Law To Become Carbon Neutral By 2045 Or Something

(Daily Caller) Hawaii pushed through some of the most environmentally ambitious bills in the country, becoming the first state to set a carbon neutral goal of 100 percent.

Hawaii Democratic Gov. David Ige signed three bills into law this week that aim to make the island state carbon neutral by 2045 and set other climate change standards. HB 2182 establishes the carbon neutral goal and creates the Greenhouse Gas Sequestration Task Force. HB 2106 requires project proposals go through a sea level rise analysis before it can move forward. Additionally, HB 1986 establishes a reforestation program as a means to address carbon sequestration — the planting of more trees will be a major part of reaching their goal.

“Climate change is real and we’re seeing its impacts right now in our island state. Taken together, this suite of bills establishes policies and programs that acknowledge and address this reality,” Ige said in a Facebook post Monday after signing the bills into law. “Sea level rise is already having an impact on beaches, roadways and homes near the shoreline. As a result, we face difficult land-use decisions, and requiring an analysis of sea level rise before beginning construction is just plain common sense.”

It’d take some serious shenanigans to make this happen. They’d have to completely ignore the fact of the island depending heavily on tourism, which comes with tons of fossil fueled flights arriving at the island. Then all the helicopter tours. The fossil fueled vehicles to move vacationers around. The massive amount of power required to run all the hotels and everything that tourists want to do. All the fossil fueled boats needed to catch fish and provide tourists with fishing expeditions. Think tourists will come when so much of that goes away? When the power grid is unreliable?

How about the fact that almost everything that makes Hawaii go comes in on fossil fueled flights and ships? Food, medicine, steel, all sorts of products. The islands can’t survive on fish, sugar, and pineapples.

Will the state simply put carbon offsets in place for everything? Which would massively increase the cost of living for residents, and dramatically increase the cost for vacationers? People already attempt to grow lots of their own food because food prices are two to three times the cost on the mainland. Think tourists will want to pay even more?

If the state really cares, they’ll only allow people to arrive on sailing ships.

Hot Take: ‘Climate Change’ Might Explain Why There Are No Aliens Out There

If you remember back, a couple of astrologers, er, scientists, modeled what they think happens with alien civilizations and how it leads to ‘climate change.’

This has led to lots and lots of articles on the subject since. Most of which were silly, and ignorable. Then we get this

In the 1950s, famed physicist Enrico Fermi posed the question that encapsulated one of the toughest questions in the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI): “Where the heck is everybody?” What he meant was, given the age of the Universe (13.8 billion years), the sheer number of galaxies (between 1 and 2 trillion), and the overall number of planets, why has humanity still not found evidence of extra-terrestrial intelligence?

This question, which has come to be known as the “Fermi Paradox”, is something scientists continue to ponder. In a new study, a team from the University of Rochester considered that perhaps Climate Change is the reason. Using a mathematical model based on the Anthropocene, they considered how civilizations and planet systems co-evolve and whether or not intelligent species are capable of living sustainability with their environment.

See? All the aliens killed themselves off because of carbon pollution! That’s why we don’t see them!

BTW, when it comes to aliens, can we really claim that 100% of all the reported encounters are fake?

Dems Latest Push: Licensing, Registration Of Semi-Automatic Firearms

Don’t forget about going after the firearms of law abiding citizens

(Breitbart) Democrats in the House and Senate are pushing firearm licensing and registration requirements.

The push is contained in legislation titled, “Blair Holt Firearm Owner Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2018.” It is being sponsored by Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL) and Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL).

The text of the legislation says, “To provide for the implementation of a system of licensing for purchasers of certain firearms and for a record of sale system for those firearms, and for other purposes.” The phrase “certain firearms” refers to “a handgun; or a semiautomatic rifle that is capable of accepting a detachable ammunition feeding device.”

The legislation defines and “ammunition feeding device” as a device “capable of being detached from a semiautomatic rifle; and has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than 10 rounds of ammunition.”

Law abiding citizens would have to register their firearms with The Government and then get a firearm license from the state government. We already see how hard it is to get a firearm in many states, at least for the law abiding attempting to protect themselves from the criminals. Imagine how much harder the gun grabbers will make the licensing with a national law.

Exemptions to the requirements include “a Federal employee who is required to carry a qualifying firearm in the capacity of that individual as a Federal employee while engaged in the performance of official duties.” In other words, the Capitol Police and other security personnel who protect Congress would not have to submit to the requirement placed upon commoners.

Funny how it’s always The Government, including those who protect government officials, who are excluded from all the Democrat gun grabbers schemes.

Trump And Kim Meet, Sign Statement On Denuclearizing North Korea

We must still remember that Kim Jong Un is a brutal, torturous, murderous, repressive dictator in a country that has been running the same for over 70 years. There’s no freedom, everyone Must Comply, and so forth. So, there’s a long way to go. Remember, China wasn’t exactly a paragon of virtue and freedom when Nixon went to China, and still aren’t the greatest. You have to start somewhere, and getting rid of North Korea’s nukes is a big first step

(CBS) President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a document that Mr. Trump described as “important” and “comprehensive,” to conclude their meetings in Singapore. The document, which offers few details about how the aims will be accomplished, says North Korea commits to working towards denuclearization.

Mr. Trump said he “absolutely” will invite Kim to the White House. Mr. Trump said he thinks the summit went “better than anybody could have expected.”

As they began the summit, Mr. Trump said he thinks he and Kim will have a “terrific relationship,” and Kim, through a translator, said North Korea had to overcome a number of “obstacles” to get to this moment.

Mr. Trump and Kim participated in a one-on-one meeting, with translators only, followed by an expanded meeting including their top advisers, and a working lunch.

You can read the full text of the document here. The most important part of it reads

  1. The United States and the DPRK commit to establish new US-DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.
  2. The United States and DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.
  3. Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula
  4. The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.

What will happen going forth? Good question. Trump has stated that the war games on the Korean peninsula will end, but sanctions will remain. Will Kim stay honest? We’ve seen the BS that North Korean leaders have provided through the years. Time will tell.

Global Warming Is Changing Horror Movies Or Something

We’re seeing the growth of a new genre

A new genre of horror has begun to emerge over the last decade: eco-horror, stories in which the planet itself is the monster. Prior to the early 2000s, when Nature was the monster in a horror movie, it was either animals run amok, like Jaws or The Birds, or plant-creatures, as in Invasion of the Body Snatchers or Little Shop of Horrors. But that’s been changing since 2006, when An Inconvenient Truth was released and raised climate change awareness across the planet. Since then, we’ve seen more and more eco-horror, such as The Happening, The Ruins, The Last of Us, The Girl with All the Gifts, and Annihilation. Each of these movies involves deadly plants that are … just plants. They’re not aliens come to destroy us; they’re just terrestrial species that have evolved to target humans.

Eco-horror represents the new existential dread we feel about the irreversible damage we‘ve done to the planet — and the knowledge that Earth is increasingly less hospitable to us on a basic level. Watch the video above to learn more about the evolution of this new existential dread.

Just more movies that tend to fail in the theaters. Because they’re bad.

I saw Annihilation. Mildly entertaining. Nothing to do with ‘climate change’.

If you want a fun horror movie, check out Happy Death Day. I didn’t have a lot of hope for it, but, turned out to be a fun movie. As they say, a cross between Groundhog Day and old school slasher films. Not a lot of gore and blood, heavy story based, the jump scenes are mostly ignored. Fun, like a lot of the late 70’s into 80’s slasher films.

Activists Want Cigarette Style Warning Labels On Coffee Cups

I’m not quite sure how I feel about this: on one hand, the cups are bad for the actual environment. On the other hand, these people are kinda unhinged

(UK Daily Mail) Activists are calling for cigarette packet-style labels on disposable coffee cups to remind people they are harming the environment when they buy them.

Anna Warren, a communications officer for North Sydney Council, has started a petition to make coffee cups ‘uncool.’

She wants drinkers to keep a plastic cup on them at all times and re-use it to save the environment.

This is what I mean about being a bit unhinged

The paper cups are not recyclable due to their waterproof plastic lining and are the second biggest filler of landfill space after plastic bags with 2.6billion thrown away every year.

Ms Warren is encouraging the big coffee brands to introduce labels reminding drinkers that the cups go to landfill, similar to the ‘smoking kills’ reminders on cigarettes.

Again, loopy.

Ms Warren’s petition to the environment minister, which has more than 23,000 signatures, reads: ‘Coffee cups are the second largest source of landfill in Australia and most of the cups that don’t make it into landfill, end up in our environment.

‘Landfill’s greenhouse gases are one of the major factors for climate change and global warming.

Now, that’s an interesting point, as well. And it refers mostly to methane. Furthermore, looking back, landfills and agriculture were blamed the most for global warming from mankind, but, cow farts and dumps weren’t sexy enough for the Cult of Climastrology.

‘Coffee cups which don’t make it to landfill end up in our oceans, killing fragile marine life like turtles, dolphins and even whales – washing up on shore dead with stomachs full of plastic waste.

On this, though, there is a point. Yes, we can try and blame a few rivers in China and Asia, but we ourselves do individually contribute to real pollution. What can we do in our individual lives to reduce our pollution footprint? And can we encourage people to do this without getting naggy and employing Big Government force?
