Feds: Philadelphia attorney helped immigrants fake stories to apply for green cards
Federal authorities have charged a Philadelphia-based immigration attorney with fraud after a sting operation uncovered evidence that she falsified paperwork to make it easier for clients in the country illegally to obtain green cards.
Andrea W. Clarke, 57, faces six counts of fraud as well as charges of making false statements, according to a federal indictment filed in February. The alleged scheme turns on a counterintuitive quirk of U.S. immigration law — that it can be more advantageous to enter the U.S. on a fake passport and come clean later, than to admit to slipping in surreptitiously.
Prosecutors say Clarke helped three clients concoct stories about entering the U.S. using an alias or a fraudulent passport — even though two had crossed the U.S. border illegally and the third had crossed on a different fake passport. The attorney then helped the trio apply for waivers admitting to the invented crimes but moving forward with their respective immigration cases from inside the United States.
She’s facing a federal jail term of up to 65 years and up to $1.75 million in fines.
U.S. law has stiffer penalties for crossing illegally than for faked paperwork, so, Open Borders advocates are attempting to help by creating said fake paperwork. We’ll probably see more of this as illegal crossing are up and people showing up at legal crossings is down
(Daily Caller) The Trump administration’s asylum policy is prompting more migrants to try their luck at crossing illegally rather than seeking out legal ports of entry, Customs and Border Protection data suggest.
The proportion of foreign nationals attempting to cross the border illegally rather than reporting to legal ports of entry has risen in the past year, according to the data. Those crossing illegally made up 73 percent of all border crossings from October 2017 to January 2018 and then rose to 83 percent for the same period of time ending on Jan. 31, 2019, NBC News reported Friday.
At the same time, the percentage of foreign nationals intentionally reaching out to border enforcement establishments dropped from 27 percent to 17 percent.
The new numbers come in the wake of President Donald Trump’s “Remain in Mexico†policy. The policy enacted in December 2018 dictates that foreign nationals who seek asylum at the southern border cannot enter the U.S. and must remain in Mexico while their case makes it through the immigration courts — a process that could take months to years.
As well they should. All asylum claims should occur at U.S. facilities outside the U.S. This will weed out the real ones from the fake ones. But, then you have the Open Borders idiots attempting to help them come and stay illegally.

Home restaurant’s sprawling outdoor patio in Los Feliz, set under a canopy of large trees, was designed to take advantage of California’s temperate climate and typically sunny skies.
But this February has been so cold that the restaurant scrambled to set up extra heaters outside the Craftsman-style house to keep diners and workers warm during the record-setting cold winter.
“We had three heaters going for a while and this month it just hasn’t been enough,†said Sam Yoo, a manager at the restaurant. “I’m trying to have the waiters and hostesses wear warmer clothing, but I have one heater set up right by the host stand so they don’t catch colds.â€
For the first time since forecasters began recording data — at least 132 years — the mercury did not reach 70 degrees in downtown Los Angeles for the entire month of February. That makes it the eighth-coldest February on record, said Ryan Kittell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard.
The high for the month clocked in at 61 degrees, significantly lower than the average temperature of 68 for February, Kittell said.

Even factoring in the cold snap, California is still warmer than average, and swings between periods of severe winter rainstorms and profound drought will probably become more pronounced in the future because of climate change, said Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at UCLA. (snip)

Democrats Prepare Congressional Hearings over Trump Saying ‘Fake News’
Congressional Democrats are planning to hold hearings about President Trump’s criticisms of establishment news outlets, according to a new report.
Bloomberg News reports that the House Judiciary Committee, which is currently led by Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), will seek to investigate Trump calling the media “fake news†and “enemies of the people.â€
“The committee will study whether such actions either reflect or blur the Constitution’s separation of powers,†the report states.
The president’s repeated declarations that the “fake news†media is the “enemy of the people†has indeed upset many Democrats and media figures.
Possible 2020 hopeful and media darling Beto O’Rourke used the line to attack Trump and Republicans in 2018, accusing him of inciting violence against the media.

House Democrats are opening an investigation into what they say are abuses of power by President Donald Trump through his attacks on the courts, the Justice Department, the FBI and the media, according to a House official familiar with the plans.
Topics for the inquiry will include Trump’s public humiliation of former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, his attacks on actions by the liberal Ninth Circuit Court and his abuse of reporters as “dishonest†and “enemies of the people,†said the person, who asked for anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. The official said there are questions about whether Trump, through some of his actions, is going too far and undermining the rule of law, a reference to established and defined limits on the arbitrary exercise of power.
Nadler is opening the investigation in part because his committee is responsible for defending the rule of law, said the official. Issues will include determining in what circumstances, if any, Congress should take steps to curb some of Trump’s actions, and how that might be accomplished.
So, some people are Butthurt, and want Congress to Do Something, which, get this, would in fact directly violate the 1st Amendment in multiple way. The President is still afforded the protections, and “Congress shall pass no law…”.
As for the separation of powers thing, I’m as in the dark as you are. It’s mentioned at the Bloomberg article at the end, but, not explained. How does Trump saying fake news and criticizing the press and others violate that? No idea.

Now, having recently blown out the candles on my 39th birthday cake and made my wish (to climb Machu Picchu), I’m used to hearing that tired old tagline: “Happy Birthday! You … look so much younger than your age.â€
First of all, it’s inaccurate. I look exactly how my mother and grandmother both looked when they were 39. I have the wrinkles, laugh lines and graying hair that come with age, plus the phantom pains that crop up if I forget to stretch after exercising. I would much rather hit up the farmers market than the club these days. I feel every single year of my 39 on the planet, and it feels good. It feels comfortable.

We disclose our ages and the ages of our friends like apologies then immediately slap on the absurd statement that we (or they) look so much “younger.†This is ageism at its most insidious ― cloaked as a compliment.

The best way to get to a climate couch potato? Humor.
Last weekend on Instagram Live, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — champion of the Green New Deal — revived another term in the climate change lexicon. Meet “climate delayer,†a catchy way to talk about people who claim to believe in the science behind climate change, but aren’t really doing a whole lot about it.
Sooooooooooo pretty much 97% of them? Because none of them really do anything in their own lives.
Climate change is a gas with comedian Josh Healey. “Most of our conversations around climate change on the left are the gloom and doom, the apocalypse, the end of the world, and that shit is real and it’s fucking scary,†says Josh Healey, an Oakland, California-based comedian and member of the 2018 Grist 50. “But if all we feel is the doom and the fear, that doesn’t motivate people. It doesn’t make me want to get out of bed in the morning, let alone create a movement.â€
The more bad news we see and hear, the less we feel we can do about it, according to a study at the University of Massachusetts — shit, that’s bad news! The Tyndall Centre advises that the same concept applies to terrifying images of climate-fueled disasters, aka “climate porn.†(It’s as hot as it sounds.)
Healey’s got his own solution: Bring humor to a humorless topic, and connect climate change to the causes that people in his North Oakland neighborhood already care a lot about.
This will happen, right? Because Warmists are known for their humor, right?

Washington Post opinion writer Christine Emba is rather upset by the way this year’s Black History Month went, and guess who’s to blame?

The worst-ever Black History Month has finally come to a close. I think. IÂ hope.
Our annual February observance is meant to celebrate the history and achievements of African Americans. But in 2019, America decided to use it for exactly the opposite.
There was blackface. (So. Much. Blackface!) An Alabama newspaper editorial called for the return of the Ku Klux Klan. High-fashion designers dabbled in minstrelry . And, lest we forget, “Empire†actor Jussie Smollett was arrested for filing a false police report for a hate crime, purportedly in a clumsy attempt to increase his salary. (Spoiler alert: His salary is now nonexistent.)
So, mostly things caused by Democrats. Oh, wait, right, this isn’t the important part (and left A LOT out of the above, especially with Jussie Smollett)
But maybe, just maybe, there’s something salvageable here. If we pay close attention, some of the month’s most egregious events can remind us of the history that we should have learned.
Let’s work backward from this week, beginning with Michael Cohen’s hearing before the House Oversight Committee. The testimony of President Trump’s former lawyer was outrageous enough on its own, but one of the most eyebrow-raising scenes in the seven-hour saga centered on Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.).
For the purposes of defending Trump against Cohen’s allegations of racism, Meadows brought in Lynne Patton — a black Trump appointee — to stand silently behind him while he spoke, assuming, apparently, that by virtue of having hired a black person, Trump could not be racist. When he was informed by Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) that using a black woman as a prop was racist itself, Meadows melted down. He called Tlaib a racist for daring to say such a thing and pointed to his relatives of color and even his friendship with Committee Chairman Elijah E. Cummings (who, yes, is black) as evidence that he was not racist.By the end of his rant, Meadows was nearly tearing up in defense of his not-racist honor.
See, the thing is, Trump, Republicans, oh, and just because you have a Black friend actually means you are a raaaaacist
But out of this farce comes a teachable moment, one that we can use for at least the rest of 2019. No, as Tlaib accurately pointed out, having a black friend — or even black nieces or nephews — does not absolve you of racism. Attempting to use people of color as a shield is, in fact, offensive. And relatedly, breaking down because you’re hurt by the insinuation that you might possibly have done something racially offensive suggests that you care more about your feelings than about actual racism.
See, your black friend is actually a shield, so, you’re doubly raaaaacist.
You just can’t win with people who see everything in terms of race.

They’re trying to avoid voting on the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez/Ed Markley resolution
SENATE DEMOCRATS INTRODUCE TONED-DOWN ALTERNATIVE TO THE GREEN NEW DEAL
Senate Democrats introduced a toned-down alternative to the Green New Deal as members stress over having to vote on the controversial resolution.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Delaware Sen. Tom Carper introduced a two-page alternative to the Green New Deal resolution Thursday that Republicans are calling a ploy to avoid voting on a “socialist†bill.
“I don’t blame Senate Democrats for trying to duck this big green bomb,†Republican Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso said in a statement. “You can’t escape the fact that nearly every Democrat senator running for president supports it.â€
“The Senate will soon be voting on the Green New Deal, and Democrats will have the chance to vote for the radical policies they say they support,†Barrasso said.
Instead of demanding sweeping societal change, the Democrats’ new resolution simply asserts climate change is real, primarily caused by human activity and that Congress “should take immediate action†on it. (it really is that simple.)
Democrats have been floating the idea of voting “present” when the GND comes up for a vote, except for a few like West Virginia’s Joe Manchin, who is a “no vote.” Will all the Senate Democrats running for president and have already thrown their support behind the GND also vote “present”?
Schumer and Carper sent a letter to Republican colleagues Thursday asking them to co-sponsor the resolution. Schumer also took to the Senate floor Wednesday to challenge Republicans to come up with an alternative to the Green New Deal.

Ocasio-Cortez warns of ‘list’ for moderate Dems who vote with Republicans: report
After more than two dozen moderate Democrats broke from their party’s progressive wing and sided with Republicans on a legislative amendment Wednesday, New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reportedly sounded the alarm in a closed-door meeting Thursday and said those Democrats were “putting themselves on a list.”
The legislation that prompted the infighting was a bill that would expand federal background checks for gun purchases, the Washington Post reported. But a key provision requiring U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to be notified if illegal immigrants attempt to purchase guns saw 26 moderate Democrats side with Republicans.
According to the Post, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi scolded her wayward center-leaning colleagues, telling them: “We are either a team or we’re not, and we have to make that decision.â€
But Ocasio-Cortez reportedly took it a step further. She said she would help progressive activists unseat those moderates in their districts in the 2020 elections, the report said. Her spokesman Corbin Trent told the paper that she made the “list” comment during the meeting.
“She said that when activists ask her why she had to vote for a gun safety bill that also further empowers an agency that forcibly injects kids with psychotropic drugs, they’re going to want a list of names and she’s going to give it to them,†Trent said, referring to ICE.

They insist they are not going to be dissuaded from voting with their districts, and many are warning that majority control is at stake.
“It’s this class of members that got elected that are the reason we have the majority,†said Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.), a co-chairman of the moderate Blue Dog Coalition. “Many of them come from these [moderate] districts, and their promise to their constituents was that they were going to put people over politics.â€
It’s one of the big problems with politics these days: federally elected officials are mostly doing the business of the national party, rather than what matters to their state/district first. If you’re from a moderately Democratic area, not just by voting but by belief, should you be standing with the San Francisco hardcore Leftists on everything? Should they follow everything Pelosi says, especially when she’s in one of the safest districts in the nation? Should they be following a person who is being the worst of Millennial stereotypes in AOC? There’s two choice for her: she’ll either become the leader of the Democrats, or she will flame out. If she keeps this up, you may see Democrats undercutting her for the 2020 election.
