FEC Complaint Alleges AOC, Chief Of Staff Moved $885k In Campaign Funds Illegally

It gets a little tiresome doing so many posts featuring this twaddling twit, but she is the most visible face of the Democratic Party at the moment. This story is also an example of the utter media bias in the U.S. news

Ocasio-Cortez, chief of staff illegally moved $885K in campaign contributions ‘off the books,’ FEC complaint alleges

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Saikat Chakrabarti, the progressive firebrand’s multimillionaire chief of staff, apparently violated campaign finance law by funneling nearly $1 million in contributions from political action committees Chakrabarti established to private companies that he also controlled, according to an explosive complaint filed Monday with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and obtained by Fox News.

Amid the allegations, a former FEC commissioner late Monday suggested in an interview with The Daily Caller News Foundation that Ocasio-Cortez and her team could separately be facing major fines and potentially even jail time if they were knowingly and willfully violating the law by hiding their control of the Justice Democrats political action committee (PAC). Such an arrangement could have allowed Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign to receive donations in excess of the normal limit, by pooling contributions to both the PAC and the campaign itself.

The FEC complaint asserts that Chakrabarti established two PACs, the Brand New Congress PAC and Justice Democrats PAC, and then systematically transfered more than $885,000 in contributions received by those PACs to the Brand New Campaign LLC and the Brand New Congress LLC — companies that, unlike PACs, are exempt from reporting all of their significant expenditures. The PACs claimed the payments were for “strategic consulting.”

Although large financial transfers from PACs to LLCs are not necessarily improper, the complaint argues that the goal of the “extensive” scheme was seemingly to illegally dodge detailed legal reporting requirements of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971, which are designed to track campaign expenditures.

This is not the first time AOC and Chakrabarti have been hit with allegations of impropriety regarding campaign finances: you had the issue with how her boyfriend was seemingly paid illegallyseemingly paid illegally.

“These are not minor or technical violations,” Tom Anderson, director of NLPC’s Government Integrity Project, said in a statement. “We are talking about real money here. In all my years of studying FEC reports, I’ve never seen a more ambitious operation to circumvent reporting requirements. Representative Ocasio-Cortez has been quite vocal in condemning so-called dark money, but her own campaign went to great lengths to avoid the sunlight of disclosure.”

Added Anderson: “They believe their cause is so great that they don’t have to play by the rules. They believe that they are above campaign finance law.”

There are possibilities of civil and criminal penalties for these actions, especially for Chakrabarti. But, would that actually happen? Politicians get away with things like this all the time with no more than a slap on the wrist, while normal citizens, such as Dinesh D’Souza, were forced to plead guilty. He was sentenced to five years probation, eight months in a “community confinement center,” weekly counseling sessions and given a $30,000 fine, all for an improper $20,000 campaign donation.

It’s a heck of a freshman class the Dems have. AOC doing all her crazy things, and now this. Ilhan Omar and her Jew and Israel hatred. Most of them refusing to condemn Nicholas Maduro of Venezuela.

As for media bias, see if you can find this allegation on the front page of most media outlets. Not on the front page of the NY Times, Washington Post, ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, LA Times, nor CNN. These make up, with a few others, the biggest, most influential media outlets in the U.S. Yet, nothing. When they are finally forced to cover this, they’ll do it in a way to protect her, much like with the allegations involving her boyfriend. That’s not reporting, it’s advocacy.

Cult Of Climastrology Has A New Term: Birthstrikers

This is actually something that all Warmists should be encouraged to become involved in: it would mean fewer of these nutters raising the next generation of nutters

‘BIRTHSTRIKERS’ FEAR GLOBAL WARMING SO MUCH THEY ARE REFUSING TO HAVE KIDS

Climate activists calling themselves “Birthstrikers” are refusing to have children due to their fear of climate change, according to a Monday interview with Bloomberg News.

“Our planet is in a kind of collapse. The natural world is collapsing around us, and that’s actually happening right now,” climate activist Victoria Derbyshire told Bloomberg.

“And I’m so disappointed by the response by authorities to this crisis, and so freaked out by everything I’ve read that I’ve — I’ve basically last year I came to the decision that I couldn’t bring a child into that.” Derbyshire continued. “And I was asking around people I know, put it up a little bit on Facebook and realize actually quite a lot of other people are making this decision. Yeah, and so, we realized it was really — really important to tell the public that there are people out there are so scared about this that they feel that they can’t actually have a family.”

Don’t make fun of them, we want them all to do this.

Several Maryland Sheriff’s Say They Won’t Enforce New Gun Control Laws

As Democrats keep attempting to pass as well as passing gun control laws that mostly infringe on the rights of lawful gun owners/potential owners, law enforcement across the nation is saying the won’t comply. Maryland is the latest (via Lid Blog)

Sheriffs Call Maryland’s Proposed Gun Laws ‘Suicide Mission’ For Law Enforcement

Sheriffs from several counties in Maryland appeared before the House of Delegates on Monday to testify against gun control legislation they said violated citizens’ rights.

“The way the bill is written, it is impossible to comply. I can’t send [my deputies] on a suicide mission,” Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis told the Capital Gazette.

Sheriff Lewis said that sending out police to take guns away from law-abiding citizens will likely cause those citizens to shoot at law enforcement officers.

The sheriff said he would not comply with any of the proposed laws that would require his deputies to take guns away from law-abiding citizens, the Capital Gazette reported.

Maryland House Bill 786, proposed by Democratic State Delegate Vanessa Atterbeary, would regulate shotguns and hunting rifles much the same as handguns.

The text of the bill is here.

“We’re gonna let them know that we are sick and tired of being penalized for Baltimore City’s inability to control crime,” Lewis told the room, according to the Salisbury Daily Times. “If these bills pass, we will not comply.”

“Law-abiding citizens are repeatedly being penalized because of Baltimore City’s inability to control their crime,” he said. “And I’m sorry — I’m not someone’s puppet. I’m going to stand up for what I think is unjust and unconstitutional to the American people, including those living in the state in Maryland.”

And that’s exactly the main problem in all this: virtually every law passed is aimed at the law abiding citizens, rather than criminals. In fact, Democrats are attempting to soften the penalties on criminal activity.

Critics said the sheriffs were acting above the law in their refusal to implement the new gun control laws if passed.

But Sheriff Lewis was quick to point out their hypocrisy.

The Capital Gazette said the sheriff likened his decision to ignore certain gun laws to Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby opting not to prosecute marijuana possession cases.

Democrats have been railing against the jail and criminal justice system, trying to change things, giving felons the ability to vote earlier than should be possible, and so many other things. And, typically, the same people trotting out these gun grabbing bills are also protected by armed security, often on the taxpayer dime.

A Little House Cleaning On Plugins

With the latest version of the Apache server, which is one of the backend requirements to run a website, several functions have been killed off. I’ve already mentioned the loss of the ability to run a plugin which allowed things like bold, italic, embedding links, and more for commenting. I can look to put something new in if y’all want.

The plugin that allows you to “Read More” on the front page is very much non-compliant, and causes lots of issues. So, now, if I use a standard “More” tag, the post will open in a single page. If you happen to have the Collapsible More Link plugin by Chroder, also called More2.0, deactivate it.

It also caused a major issue with Pingback/Trackback plugins. I had it set up so that if someone sent a TB/PB it would show at the end of each post. If you happened to notice a short time yesterday where the front page stopped after the Pinup post, that’s why. So Inline Pingbacks and Trackbacks by Slobokan is a plugin you do not want to use.

Likewise, one called Trackping Separator by Thomas AU is dead. It allowed the separation of TBs/PBs from the comments. They would show above the comments. Would no longer work. So, TBs/PBs will now show in the comments.

If you are running WordPress, you should take a hard look at plugins. It used to be that updates to WordPress would kill a theme (I’ve had that happen long ago, thankfully no longer, crossing fingers). Now, updates to it and Apache can cause massive problems with plugins and all sorts of issues.

Climahypocrite AOC Leaves Parade In Fossil Fueled Minivan With Subway Just Blocks Away

Yes, yes, another post on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, but, she really is the most visible Democrat at the moment, and certainly the current poster child for climate change hypocrisy

Ocasio-Cortez leaves parade in 17 mpg minivan — blocks from the subway

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made her getaway from a St. Patrick’s Day parade in a for-hire minivan on Sunday — despite being just blocks from a Queens subway station.

The leading advocate for the proposed “Green New Deal” hopped into a white Chrysler Town and County with livery plates around 1:20 p.m. after marching just part of the way in the 20th annual “St. Pat’s for All” parade through Sunnyside and Woodside.

The 2016 model of the vehicle gets an average of just 17 mpg in the city on regular gas, according to the US Department of Energy.

Hours earlier, Ocasio-Cortez (D-The Bronx, Queens) defensively tweeted against The Post for exposing her penchant for traveling in gas-guzzling private vehicles instead of using mass transit.

“Living in the world as it is isn’t an argument against working towards a better future,” she claimed.

Ocasio-Cortez and two aides were picked up at 48th Street and Skillman Avenue, less than four blocks from the 7 train’s 46th Street-Bliss Street station.

Now, that line about “living in the world as it is…” is just the same old Excuse that Warmists throw out in one form or another as to why they get to not walk the talk but that Other People should be forced to have thrust on their lives. I’ve seen it in one form or another for decades while deal with Believers in anthropogenic climate change, hence the reason “walking the talk”, “practicing what you preach”, etc., continuously shows up in my ‘climate change’ posts.

If your doctor is overweight and smokes and tells you to stop smoking and lose weight, do you listen to him/her? If you mechanic pulls up in their own car which has obvious mechanical issues, do you listen to that person? If a friend tells you to be more eco-friendly and their garbage can is overflowing with bottles and cans which do not get recycled, do you listen?

AOC had a snit-fit over that NY Post article, but, it’s spot on

Since declaring her candidacy in May 2017, Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign heavily relied on those combustible-engine cars — even though a subway station was just 138 feet from her Elmhurst campaign office.

She listed 1,049 transactions for Uber, Lyft, Juno and other car services, federal filings show. The campaign had 505 Uber expenses alone.

In all, Ocasio-Cortez spent $29,365.70 on those emissions-spewing vehicles, along with car and van rentals — even though her Queens HQ was a one-minute walk to the 7 train.

As Instapundit is fond of saying (and I add a few words to at the end) “I’ll believe it’s a crisis when those who tell me it’s a crisis start acting like it’s a crisis in their own lives.”

California Looks To Get Into The Taxing Sugary Drinks Racket

This hasn’t worked very will in the cities that have instituted big taxes and restrictions on sugary drinks. Taxes from businesses have gone down, store owners have been hurt, businesses have moved out of cities. It’s a little harder to do when a whole state gives it a shot with being Nice Fascists, meaning this is supposedly for your own good (rather than a way to take more money from your pocket)

Is gulping soda as bad as smoking? California seems to think so

In California, soda is the new tobacco — at least from a public policy point of view.

Adopting some of the same methods that have been employed to reduce smoking, California legislators have put together an ambitious package of bills aimed at curbing consumption of sodas, energy drinks and other beverages that have added sugar.

The proposals, which are sponsored by the California Medical Assn. and California Dental Assn., include levying a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages, mandating warning labels on their bottles and restricting how they are promoted and displayed in stores, as well as limiting the serving size of fountain drinks. The proceeds from the tax (the amount is yet to be determined) would fund programs to prevent obesity, diabetes and other health problems associated with the overconsumption of sugar.

One of the proposed measures that could show results is definitely worth exploring: taxes on drinks with added sugar.

It’s an intriguing approach that has already sparked a backlash from the soda industry and a public discussion about what role the government should play in grocery store purchases. Now the onus is on public health officials to make a clear and compelling case about the dangers — and to explain why sugary drinks deserve as harsh a regulatory response as cigarettes.

Or, perhaps, government should stop interfering in our lives. It should stop dictating how we run our lives. Remember, this is a state that has made using marijuana legal, in contradiction of federal law. Marijuana is a drug. Regardless of the research that shows it doesn’t cause physical or psychological addiction, you are still inhaling it into your lungs, and the main ingredient, THC, causes changes to the brain as you are getting high. It also has many physical effects, and prolonged usage can damage the lungs, cause anxiety, sleeplessness, and a higher chance of a heart attack.

Yet soda is the problem. It’s not to say that it isn’t an issue. But, it’s not government’s job. And since the above is by the LA Times Editorial Board

Additionally, some of the provisions in this package are of dubious merit. What’s the benefit of stamping a warning label on Coke or Pepsi bottles when they already carry enough nutritional information on the label to inform consumers about how much sugar and calories are inside? In any case, people already know that soda is not good for them. This is why schools have banned such beverages from their cafeterias and McDonald’s stopped including soda as a standard Happy Meal offering in 2013.

And capping the size of fountain sodas at 16 ounces (the equivalent of a small drink at McDonald’s), which one of the bills proposes, would have limited effect if restaurants allow free refills.

So, the California General Assembly, run by Democrats, will surely put in a restriction.

With so much of the food found at the grocery store packed with added sugars — even in “healthy” food such as yogurt, cereal and salad dressing — it makes sense to discourage consumption of the empty calories found in soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks. Effective and sensible strategies to do so are worth pursuing.

An ad campaign would be worth pursuing. Not acting as a nanny state, especially with the taxes. Which is probably the real reason, not the health aspect.

CNN: Global Warming Also Causes It To Get Cold Or Something

According to Warmist dogma, the last glacial age was super hot (via Watts Up With That?Watts Up With That?)

Is it climate change or global warming? How science and a secret memo shaped the answer

As director of the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, Anthony Leiserowitz gets brought in to a lot of conversations about the topic. He shapes stories about it with other scientist for publication. He talks to CEOs and politicians. He gives lectures. He’s ready to answer just about any heavy questions about the complicated subject. But often, the first question he gets is a simple one.

Is it global warming or climate change?

“If I had a penny for every time I was asked that,” Leiserowitz mused.

The term “global warming” seemed to be more in vogue in the past decade, although President Trump uses it these days to make fun of the concept on Twitter. (snip)

In 1979, the first decisive National Academy of Science study looking at the impact of CO2 on climate, known as the Charney Report for its chairman, used Broecker’s term “global warming” to discuss the link between the increase in carbon dioxide emissions and surface temperature. It used “climate change” to talk about the other changes it would bring.

What changes?

“The term ‘global warming’ confuses people because it triggers thoughts about warmth, and it sort of lends itself to misinterpretation when it also impacts the cold,” said Mike Hulme, a professor of human geography at the University of Cambridge whose work focuses on the way climate change is discussed in public and political conversations. (snip)

“You could think of global warming as the large macroperspective phenomenon,” said Naomi Oreskes, a professor of the history of science and an affiliated professor of Earth and planetary sciences at Harvard University who focuses on climate change. “Climate is more complicated.”The term ‘global warming’ also doesn’t get at how it impacts weather locally and regionally.”

In other words, despite the claim from Warmists that CO2, ie, “carbon pollution”, is going to raise the temperature of the Earth to the point where life cannot survive, it also means that it will get colder and stuff at the small level. This is a cult, as they have an answer that fits perfectly into their Beliefs for everything, no matter how absurd.
