St. Greta Of Stockholm Nominated For Nobel Peace Prize Or Something

Well, if Al Gore, along withe UN IPCC, could be nominated and win the Nobel Peace Prize for his climahysteria (and climahypocrisy and climalying), and Barack Obama could be nominated and win for doing absolutely nothing but winning an election, then why not an 11 year old 17 year old who looks 11 and is blowing off school and now trying to make lots of money off her new-found fame?

Teenage Climate Activist Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

Two lawmakers in Sweden have nominated Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize.

Jens Holm and Hakan Svenneling, who are both members of Sweden’s Left Party, said Monday that Thunberg “has worked hard to make politicians open their eyes to the climate crisis” and “action for reducing our emissions and complying with the Paris Agreement is therefore also an act of making peace.”

Yet, almost none are actually doing that much.

Thunberg, 17, has encouraged students to skip school to join protests demanding faster action on climate change, a movement that has spread beyond Sweden to other European nations and around the world. She founded the Fridays for Future movement that has inspired similar actions by other young people.

So, telling kids to blow off school is now grounds for a Peace Prize? According to Alfred Nobel’s will, the Peace Prize shall be awarded to the person who in the preceding year “shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses”. Tell kids to skip school doesn’t quite apply, eh?

The 2018 award went to Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad “for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict.” Telling kids to blow off school and governments to institute massive authoritarian controls on their citizens certainly qualifies, eh? The thing is, you can totally see her winning one, can’t you, based on who votes, right?

On Tuesday, around midnight, someone uploaded a video to Twitter showing emergency vehicles responding to an incident at an apartment complex near USC, the Lorenzo, known to be popular with Chinese international students.

The post claimed it was a case of coronavirus, and a screenshot of an email from the Lorenzo’s manager, Chance Kidd, seemed to confirm that.

The news that the first reputed coronavirus case in the center of Los Angeles had been detected near USC immediately went viral. A lot of people tweeted panicked, performative posts about hand-washing and the threat of disease. One poster claimed a friend’s roommate’s brother’s girlfriend had been infected.

The university later clarified that no coronavirus case had been discovered at the Lorenzo. And despite repeated requests for comment, Kidd and the Lorenzo declined to explain why they had made such a claim.

So, people fall for hoaxes, like they always do, and are very concerned about the Coronavirus, as the news media tells us about coming doom, the LA Times included. Things that always happen, but are so much easier in the age of the Internet and social media.

This is our new normal — a rumor becomes a fact, then turns back into a rumor, with no explanation. A dangerous event halfway around the world becomes entertainment for a night. The coronavirus, to a lot of us, is just another piece of content.

Most of the time, I think this is good. Although many lament the loss of some fabled age of civility, I think a lot of us are just experiencing the discomfort of having to confront and value perspectives as we’ve never had to before. Jokes about minorities aren’t as funny when minorities are part of the audience. Novelists writing about the Mexican border now must confront the fact that they might have readers who ask them to do so accurately. It’s the age-old adage of reading the room — except social media are a room with potentially every kind of person in it.

But it also means that your joking posts about coronavirus — about frantically washing your hands and how you’re not the “diseased” kind of Asian — will probably appear on the feeds of someone with family whose relatives may be suffering or terrified. And it will probably make them very angry.

They have made me furious. I have relatives who live near Wuhan, where millions of people are under lockdown amid the declaration of a global health emergency by the World Health Organization.

Let’s be clear about this: Your fear does not justify your racism and xenophobia. Your jokes and performative panic about the coronavirus are not funny. They are deeply pointless and trivialize something that should be taken seriously. And they are creating an environment of fear, panic and disinformation that’s more dangerous than the disease itself.

Your Fault: ‘Climate Change’ Could Maybe Possibly Pose A Threat To Future Super Bowls

Climate change poses threat to future Super Bowls in Miami

The forecast for the Super Bowl in Miami is grim.

Clear skies and temperature in the 60s are expected when the game kicks off, so weather won’t be a problem.

But climate change likely will be, sooner or later. The sea and temperature are rising, posing a threat to South Floridians’ way of life, including their customary spot in the NFL’s Super Bowl rotation.

The game will be played Sunday in Miami for the 11th time, the most of any city. Given the changing climate, how much longer will the region be a place where the NFL wants to bring its big party?

“In 10 years maybe we’ll still be functioning normally,” said Harold Wanless, a leading expert on sea level rise in South Florida. “Twenty years? I think that could be a problem.”

The Miami Dolphins’ stadium, the site of the Super Bowl this year for the sixth time, stands 10 feet above sea level. That will change, although projections vary widely.

The average sea rise through the entire 20th Century was just 7-8 inches, which is exactly average for the Holocene over the last 8,000 years. During a warm period, one would expect the sea rise to actually be higher, because it will be much lower during a cool period. The Miami Beach station hasn’t operated since 1981, but it showed just .78 feet over 100 years (it operated since 1931). The next closest station is Virginia Key, showing .93 feet per 100 years, closer to what is expected during a warm period. Mayport, Florida shows .86 feet. Regardless, nothing shows anthropogenic causation, just a low level Holocene warm period.

Of course, facts do not matter to cults. They have their Dogma, and will not only never let go, they’ll quadruple down on it.

Democrats Vow To Continue Their Unhinged Trump Investigations

Democrats Vow Trump Probes to Go On After Impeachment Trial Ends

President Donald Trump’s scrutiny by Congress won’t end with his expected acquittal in the Senate. House Democrats have a list of inquiries they plan to pursue when the impeachment saga is over.

“The investigations and oversight will continue,” said Representative Carolyn Maloney of New York, head of the Oversight and Reform Committee, the lead investigative panel in the House. “We’ve got several cases.”

Democratic-led committees in the House will keep seeking a wide range of evidence and testimony as they look into Trump’s administration, his policies and his businesses and finances. They also plan to keep a focus on his conduct in dealing with Ukraine.

In addition, there are multiple court cases running on separate tracks seeking access to his tax returns, testimony from former White House officials and financial records to show whether the president is unlawfully profiting from foreign governments. Three of the cases will be considered by the U.S. Supreme Court in the spring.

This all will be occurring in the middle of a election campaign in which both parties will be fighting for control of the White House and both chambers of Congress.

Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, the House Republican leader, said he has no doubt that House Democrats will now intensify their Trump investigations. “That’s their only agenda,” he said.

Seriously, do they want to talk about their Modern Socialism agenda? Government running their healthcare, rationing their energy, telling citizens where they can live, what they can drive, and where they can travel? About all they higher taxes they want to impose? Unfettered illegal immigration? Etc? They sure do not want to talk about the great stock market, record low unemployment, historic high levels of Black employment. Negotiating economic treaties that put the U.S.A. on a level playing field, giving our products better access to foreign markets. Whacking terrorists. And so much more great that Trump has done

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi isn’t saying whether House Democrats will specifically pursue Ukraine-related testimony and evidence their impeachment managers were unable to obtain during the trial. That includes hearing from former National Security Advisor John Bolton.

She told reporters Thursday that “we do believe there is more truth for the American people to know.”

Then maybe they shouldn’t have rushed the first unhinged impeachment through. Of course, the more they do this, the more Team Trump and the GOP bring up what Sleazy Joe Biden was doing, and since the Democrats are again attempting to hose Comrade Bernie out of the nomination, Biden will look very skeezy.

I, too, could not contain myself after Mnuchin’s Davos remark. I tweeted this:

But Trump and his cabal appear to understand something that their liberal detractors do not: One cannot acknowledge the perils of climate change, commit to doing whatever it takes to reverse it, and continue to think of capitalism as a natural system that can be tweaked to deliver shared, green prosperity.

Trump gets it: climate change is capitalism’s Waterloo. There is simply no feasible path toward the re-stabilization of the climate that is consistent with the maintenance of capitalism’s main pillars.

The system we live in, unlike the one implied by college economics textbooks, turns on a pathological dynamic recycling mechanism: Oligopolies extract exhaustible value from humans and nature at breakneck speed, financed by debt-turbocharged financialization, which in turn fuels the extractive oligopolies.

Uncouth and disagreeable, Trumpism is nonetheless an honest manifestation of the historic moment when late capitalism pushed humanity past the point of no return. Trump urges us to carry on, while Mnuchin suggests that Thunberg numb her soul with the opium of mainstream economics.

The only alternative to their policy of accelerated climate change, to the oil and finance curses that drive capitalism, is the wholesale disintegration of today’s technostructure. Do we have the stomach for it?

So, he wants to change the entire system, but, too what? Warmists just don’t usually like to say that they want the Central Government in charge.

We still don’t know where the 2019 novel coronavirus came from. The leading suspicion is an animal host – a bat, likely – infected another animal that has more contact with humans.

That’s how the 2012 MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) outbreak is believed to have played out. A bat, at some point in the past, infected a camel, which may have sneezed on a human.

One of the reasons the human and animal worlds are bumping up against each other is a changing climate. Research suggests that warmer winters and springs are keeping bats, for example, around longer because the insects they feed on also like the warmth. And this may affect the spread of diseases bats carry.

“Climate change, coupled with other human environmental changes like urbanization and habitat destruction, is bringing us closer to wildlife,” said Dr. Katie Clow, a professor at the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph. “So there’s this very complex interplay of many different changes happening all at the same time.”

The horror of a minimal 1.5F increase in global temperatures since 1850. Expect more fear mongering.

St. Greta Looks To Force Africa To Comply With Her Dictates

Greta Thunberg seeks Africa climate change action

Teen activist Greta Thunberg has hosted a press conference to stress the importance of how climate change is affecting people in Africa.

One of those taking part was Vanessa Nakate, a Ugandan at the centre of a race row at Davos last week.

She was angered after she was cropped out of a photograph taken with her white peers, including Ms Thunberg.

She said activists in Africa campaigned as much as their counterparts elsewhere but were often ignored by the media.

“This is the time for the world to listen to the activists from Africa and to pay attention to their stories,” Ms Nakate told journalists via a video link from Uganda’s capital, Kampala.

“This is an opportunity for media to actually do some justice to the climate issues in Africa.”

The other part of climate justice for Africa is a massive transfer of wealth from 1st World Nations to African nations, wealth that comes with zero strings attached because, per climate justice doctrine, the 1st World Nations owe the 3rd World ones.

The event was organised in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, by Ms Thunberg’s #FridaysForFuture movement, which she started in August 2018 inspiring millions around the world to demand more be done to stop climate change.

The 17-year-old said she wanted to use the media attention she attracted to focus on climate change in Africa as “the African perspective is so under-reported”.

That’s not patronizing at all. But, hey, St. Greta will get lots of money as she trademarks Fridays For Future, eh?
