Hollywood is already having enough problems in putting out good movies that people want to see. People are leery about paying all the money to go see movies that can have all sorts of Woke garbage in them. And that the ideas are pretty repetitive. So, hey, yeah, let’s add climate cult business into it
Lights, camera … climate? Report finds Hollywood is depicting a world without climate change
Remember that scene in 2022?s “Top Gun: Maverick,” when Tom Cruise’s character suddenly has to navigate a climate change-fueled storm? Or in the latest “Scream” movie, when the teens are hiding from the killer in a field of solar panels?
No? Right, that’s because they never happened.
Across Hollywood, the most popular films from 2013 to 2022 largely ignored climate change, despite its growing presence across everyday life — from the effects (extreme weather) to the response to it (electric vehicles, solar panels, and more).
Researchers from Colby College and Good Energy, a nonprofit that helps storytellers portray climate change on-screen, put together a new report and devised what they’re calling a “Climate Reality Check,” similar to the Bechdel-Wallace Test, which assesses whether women get equal screen time. This test, however, asks: Does climate change, as a concept, exist in the film? And does a main character acknowledge it?
Only a small percentage of films passed the exam.
And what, pray tell, picture do they use for the article?
Yeah, they really included a frozen world from the Day After Tomorrow. Because heating causes an ice age.
“I can pretty confidently say that most major studios and networks and streamers are interested in this effort and exploring it,” said Ellis Watamanuk, senior director of the Entertainment Lab at Rare, an international conservation organization that focuses on behavioral science to push for change.
Watamanuk works with filmmakers and TV producers to think about creative ways to infuse climate change into their stories. The idea isn’t to churn out story upon story that’s explicitly about climate change, he said. Rather, it’s finding ways to infuse existing stories, from courtroom dramas to ghost-hunting reality shows, with storylines or examples of the realities of climate change confronting people.
Sigh. It always ends up blatant and has people giving Speeches, destroying the flow of the movie. But, hey, have fun watching your business dry up.
Well, of course Hollywood movies are ignoring
global warmingclimate change. No everyone likes science fiction!Hollywood has pretty much used up all of its ideas, and what we are getting today are superhero flicks and remakes. Did The Day the Earth Stood Still really have to be remade? The politically correct remake of Ghostbusters was a flop.
And there’s a bigger problem. With 60+ inch televisions, people really don’t ‘need’ to go to the theater anymore. Who needs to spend $18 on a soda and popcorn to go to a moviehouse when they can sit on their couches, get drinks from the ‘fridge, and pause the movie when they’ve got to pee? If you are going to the movies to make out with your girlfriend, you can do that on the couch as well, with a conveniently handy blanket if needed. There’s a reason “Netflix and Chill” has an Urban Dictionary definition.
We couldn’t agree more with Mr Dana! Hollywood is out of ideas, and forget movies about ideas.
I watch the original The Day the Earth Stood Still with Michael Rennie about every year. ‘Klaatu barada nikto’. Gort made this movie so Keanu wouldn’t have to.
On the other hand, blame the audience. Hollywood chases money and punishes risk and innovation.

I haven’t seen a movie in the theater in more than a decade. My poor hearing makes them really incomprehensible to me. Our hi-def 54″ TV is plenty for me, and it has a closed captions option!
Best recent movie? The Martian is good, and I tune into it almost every time I see it on the television guide. I agree with Mr Dowd on Fiddler, Apocalypse Now, Casablanca, and would add In Harm’s Way, The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur, Exodus, Dr Zhivago, Dr Strangelove, and several others.
We go to the theater once or twice a year with a group of grandkids to see grandkid movies. The Simpson’s Movie. Bob’s Burgers. etc
For some reason known only to The Algorithm, The Enemy Below popped up on my youtube list. Also a good choice, even Star Trek ripped it off. 🙂 I’ve sometimes thought that if the AI folk really wanted to do a service to humanity, they’d forget this SETI stuff, protein folding and cancer cures. Instead develop a program that could take in old movies, tv and radio shows and produce more in the same style. It seems that in fact Hollywood does NOT follow the money, otherwise they would not produce the crap they do. They seem more interested in making points with other mewmbers of the Hollywood crowd. :-
